I'm currently having trouble getting a desktop to run Ubuntu.Booting up the Ubuntu Live disk delivers the error (There was an unresolvable error.Dropping you into a live environment). After the Live CD boots I'm able to partition/install from within Gnome.I proceeded to install 10.04 and update the system. After updating everything and the kernel I lose the ability to boot the system as it will totally freeze just as it auto-logs in.I'm unable to drop into a virtual console.
I tried the alternative CD thinking it would help and every install/test option besides MemTest86+ displays the crypic: Floppy Unknown Error(233)I don't use a floppy and this error doesn't show up anywhere, but in a dapper bug report. The bios is configured correctly. The HD (I've tried two) and memory are in good condition.

I have VMware player on my laptop. I have three working virtual machines, Android, Windows Vista, and Kubuntu, and three that something went wrong don't work. How do I get rid of these space cloggers? Just go to Home folder/VMware and jus delete the folders of useless machines? Or is there a way to do it properly? Or am I stuck with these forever? And how do I rename a virtual machine?

I'd like to install the 10.04 32-bit inside a Windows7 VirtualPC.Got the cd burned, and my virt-pc set up (1 GB RAM, 16GB fixed size virtual disk).I started up the virt-pc, and it automatically booted up from the cd, getting as far as asking me what language I'd like to use, but after selecting English and pressing enter, the virtual-pc window just blinked away.Subsequent attempts to start the virt-pc result in a window popping up, listing some text (free memory, can't read the rest -- too fast), which then blinks away almost immediately.
I was using these URL... directions as a guide.Anyone know if this should work? Or should I go with VirtualBox?The host pc is running 64-bit-win7-pro, amd quad-core, 4gb ram, lots of free disk, in case any of that matters.

Having messed up my old 11.1 VM I decided to start anew with 11.2 on Virtual Box 3.2. First attempt to install resulted in a crashing (aborted) system after the first reboot (before automatic configuration). Second attempt to install resulted in a GNOME-based system with a weird-looking login screen.
I tried to configure my account for auto-login but was told by the help that GDM or KDM are required for that. So I tried to install GDM (since I was using GNOME) and couldn't find it. I installed KDM instead.
Then I rebooted and found myself at a text mode login prompt (but in runlevel 5). For some reason the system didn't start X and KDM. Otherwise the system seemed healthy:
I logged in and started X (startx) and everything worked perfectly. However, runlevel 5 is supposed to start X and isn't and KDM never showed up. And why couldn't I install GDM? And why is GDM or KDM not part of the default install?

I have installed 10.10 as a virtual machine under my 10.04 host installation. I have then attempted to install the guest additions to make it more integrated with the host. When I start the autorun of the guest additions, it tries to compile some programs. This seems to be a feature of the VBox in 10.04 and worked with 10.04 was also the guest. However, with 10.10 as the guest, I get a compile error, specifically this at the end of vboxadd-install.log:

I cannot install Kubuntu (or Unbuntu) 10.4 on my husband's computer. I have spent 5 hours on this and cannot get anywhere. I am deeply frustrated. The iso I burned to CD is good (works on 2 other computers). His computer will not boot from USB, no matter what I do to the drive order in BIOS. After loading the blue screen with the Kubuntu logo on it (and the blue-white dots), the screen changes to black and shows the following text:
BusyBox v1.13.3 (Ubuntu 1:1.13.3-1ubuntu11) built-in shell (ash) (initrafs) Unable to find a medium containing a live file system.
He really needs to get rid of WinXP. Kubuntu is what I have on my computer (and love it!). Here is some info about his computer:
OS Name Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 Build 2600
OS Manufacturer Microsoft Corporation

Right after selecting [Install Ububtu] / [Try live CD], I get this message and the system freezes. The same message appears when trying to install Ubuntu from VMWare Player or booting from a CD instead of a USB stick. My laptop is running Linux Mint 9 and I am trying to install Fedora 13 in a virtual machine within Virtualbox. However, it's not working. It takes forever to get past the initial white/blue loading bar when it first boots and then it just goes white, so I can't see anything. I've already tried modifying the bootline parameter of the live CD to include noprobe, noacpi, noapic, nousb, and nofirewire. However, the result is the same. Am I missing something? Is it possible to install this?

When I check the USB drivers I get the following response (device in question is FTDI Serial in/out).OS is Ubuntu Studio 9.04 new install. I downloaded and mounted debian-8.2.0-amd64-netinst.iso on my work machine's VirtualBox v5.0.12 to check out Debian stable/Jessie's installer and clean installation in case I need to do it soon. I like the new installer compared to 11/24/2011 on my old desktop machine. It is much nicer, fancier with its advanced options, etc.
However, I ran into issues with its "Select and Install" part when I selected desktop managers (e.g., KDE and Gnome) and continued. It failed as shown in [URL] .... images. Why? I tried again from scratch and same thing. If I don't select any and just select non-GUI stuff (e.g, SSH and standard system utilities), then it works but I want the pretty GUI stuff.

Just upgraded fro 9.10 to 10.04, and went to start VMware player. It needed to load and compile some modules.
All of them got a nice green tick except the Virtual Network Device
Unable to start services. See log file /tmp/vmware-root/setup-2986.log for details.
I cant access that log file. Set the folder to read only, and any contents, but theres no file in there.
How do I solve this so I can run WMware?

I've set up a server running Ubuntu 10.10 (desktop) with apache. Problem is: When I try to configure multiple virtual hosts I can only access the first one. I'm sure that I'm missing something basic in my setup, but I cannot seem to figure out what.
What I want is simply two virtual hosts, one only available on the LAN where I can test my php files and one "live" available from the outside.
Heres what I've done:
Installed Apache2.2
Copy /etc/apache2/sites-available/default -> /etc/apache2/sites-available/dev
Modified "dev" config DocumentRoot and Document to point to /var/www/dev
Modified "dev" config VirtualHost to <VirtualHost *:1337> (port change right?)
Modified "default" config DocumentRoot and Document to point to /var/www/live
[Code].....
Live works fine, but dev cannot connect (as if there is no server there).

I have been learning Debian by using a virtual machine. After fine-tuning my installation procedure, I decided to copy that installation to my physical system. The hard drive already has another Linux based system installed. I plan to dual boot. After copying files I updated fstab and menu.lst.The partition scheme between the virtual and physical environments are similar, but the partitions are not mapped exactly the same. Thus the Debian system on the physical hard drive fails to boot simply because the initrd is created for the root partition location on the virtual machine. The initrd created in the virtual machine is looking for the root file system on /dev/hda1 whereas on my physical drive the new location is /dev/sda7.How can I rebuild the initrd on the physical system? I started to use the installation DVD in rescue mode, but I did not get too far.

I am an inexperienced Linux user, I have tried Knoppix and Ubuntu in the past. Since we use Fedora servers at work I have wanted to try Fedora for some time and I tried running it in a virtual machine. My virtual machine is Sun VirtualBox and my OS is Vista Ultimate. Everything worked well until it was time to decide where Fedora is to be installed.Alright, screenshot time yet? This is where I hit the wall, the screen where you select installation drive/partition. The field is greyed out as you can see.
I have prepared a partition, at first I formatted it in FAT32 but because I didn't see it in the installation screen I just re-formatted it in NTFS.Installing with virtual machine should be working? Why is the field grey? What to do? Is it because I have mounted the dowloaded disc image instead of burning it?
I have a 64-bit architecture AMD processor with 2GB RAM and have tried Ubuntu 64-bit in the past, is there a 64-bit version of Fedora and would that be better or worse for me than 32-bit version?

I have an older dell CSX laptop that I would like to load up with ubuntu or kubuntu... or anything other than XP. The problem is that the laptop does not have the option to boot from USB, I don't have a CD/Floppy drive to attach to the media bay and I don't have a pcmia that will PXE boot... So, do I have any other options? I really don't want to go purchase anything for this laptop because it's old, but if I could get it reloaded with anything it would be ok for a netbook... It will boot into XP, but its very sluggish.

I am trying to install ubuntu 10.04 64 bit on a toshiba satellite L505 that has windows 7 64 bit. When I try to boot from the cd I burned I get that the file /ubuntu/winnt/wubildr.mbr is not available and to repair with the windows cd.But when I checked the command prompt in windows 7, it is there. I did a repair twice and it still won't boot completely. One time for loading the try ubuntu before installing, it stopped at child_objects and sat there for 10 minutes.I also did try the 32 bit on a 64 bit machine but still nothing.I have loaded previous versions of ubuntu for relatives with no problem.

After restarting, it starts to install but always gets stuck at Step 3, where it asks for the keyboard layout. It simply do not go to Step 4.It also detects an application problem "Sorry the program "parted server" closed unexpectedly". I tried to report it, but it does not reports the error. The live version seems to be working fine. I can run firefox and some simple applications on it.
