Debian Configuration :: Internet For Acer Extensa 5220 Laptop On Stretch

Jul 20, 2015

I have installed debian stretch on this machine, but can't get wired ethernet running. Using Slitaz live disc, the wired connection works. Guess I am missing a package or two.

Slitaz system (2.6.37) info reports:

Code: Select alltg3:  Broadcom Tigon3 ethernet driver
ath5k : Support for 5xxx series of Atheros 802.11 wireless LAN cards
ath:  Shared library for Atheros wireless LAN cards
mac80211:  IEEE 802.11 subsystem

Code: Select allEthernet controller:  Broadcom Corporation Netlink BCM5787M Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express
Ethernet controller:  Atheros Communications Inc. AR242x/AR542x Wireless Network Adaptor

Interfaces: lo, dummy0, eth0, wlan0

So it looks to me I need drivers for:

wired interface - Broadcom BCM5787M
wireless interface - Atheros Communications Inc. AR242x/AR542x

The debian scratch I have installed on the laptop gives me this info:

Code: Select alllspci -vvnn | grep -A 9 Network

cpufreq_conservative    13872  0

[Code] ...

It looks like the required modules have been loaded, e.g. for wired, tg3

dmesg contains:

My etc/network/interfaces file is:

And ifconfig yields:

Ubuntu Installation :: Kubuntu V9.1 Fails To Boot After Fresh Install And Display Anomalies At The Desktop

Mar 22, 2010

The last version a Linux I had was Mandrake v9.1. However, in looking to get the latest/greatest Linux I downloaded Ubuntu and Kubuntu. After installing Kubuntu the system reboots and fails to boot into the OS. After the P.O.S.T all I get a the word "GRUB". There is no response to any keys with the exception of Ctrl-Alt-Del. I am temporarily able to get passed the boot problem if I boot from the CD and choose boot from primary hard menu option. I'm not sure how to fix the boot up problem and could use some advice. However, using the CD to boot up the hard drives installation leads me to my next problem.

While in a desktop session I am unable to drag windows by their title bar. When attempting to drag a window, the desktop becomes covered with parts of the original window spreading all over the screen in multiple directions. It looks like a kaleidoscope or bad acid trip image. I suspect the video anomalies might be configuration related or improper driver. Again guidance would be greatly appreciated here.

I have a good 'ole Matrox MGA Millenium card installed into a P4 1.8ghz system, with 512 MB ram. The hard drive originally had an old install of Mandrake v9.1, but all of the partitions were wiped and I created 3 new partitions:

- /dev/sda1 20GB Bootable/Primary Partition EXT4 (Unbuntu mounted at /)
- /dev/sda2 18GB Primary EXT4 (Kubuntu mounted at /mnt/Ubuntu_dsktop_91)
- /dev/sda3 2GB Swap space

My intent was to install Ubuntu on the 2nd primary partition and be able to switch between them. However, I tried installed Ubuntu on the first partition (reformatted of course) and I encounter the same boot problem and display problem.

CentOS 5 :: Can't Seem To Get A Fresh Install To Boot On A Acer Aspire T160 Desktop Computer?

Aug 7, 2009

i can't seem to get a fresh install to boot on a Acer Aspire T160 desktop computer, after the install finishes (basic install, command line only) it gets past 'Verifying DMI Pool.......' but then nothing, it just hangs, no Grub messages, nothing. Here is my hardware/config

Proc: Sempron 3200
Mem: 512 MB
/dev/hda1 110GB / Bootable
/dev/hda2 4GB Swap
/dev/md0 150GB /home
/dev/sda1 RAID
/dev/sdb1 RAID

i have tried RAID1 and RAID0 for md0, no change, i've also disconnected the raid all together and just installed on the IDE drive, still nothing. I noticed the BIOS supports hardware RAID but i have that disabled from past experiences and opting for software raid instead. i've gone through 'linux rescue' and reinstalled Grub, rebuilt raids and checked disks.

an interesting thing happens tho if i just have the IDE drive plugged in and nothing else... i get a BIOS message asking to plug in a bootable disk, does this mean it doesn't see my linux install at all? doesn't know to pass the boot along to /dev/hda?

i'm running out of ideas, tho neither have i tried installing to the raid... nor have i tried any other distros (Fedora, Ubuntu) on this machine yet.

Ubuntu :: Desktop Fails To Boot After New 10.10 Install?

May 1, 2011

Recently I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on a desktop I use on occasion. It is a Dell Dimension E510. It was running on Windows XP(?) and I think ours dates back to around 2005 or 2007, but I can't say so with certainty.

Anyway, let's say it was about ten days ago when I installed. Everything worked fine and was great. But now the computer won't boot and I'm at a total loss of where I should go from here.

To summarize what happens: Basically I hit the power button and can hear the machine turn on (the monitor's power button is stuck on, so it's already powered), but the screen just stays dark.

I've done a slight amount of research and tested to see if it was the CPU behind it, and if removing any external devices would help (which I'm still not sure if it isn't the culprit) to no avail. My younger sister uses the computer almost exclusively for charging her iPod - which in that case may be related. I'm curious if anyone knows other methods to get around the possibility of it being a CPU problem just in case.

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Install 10.10 On Acer Aspire

Mar 3, 2011

I have been attempting to install Ubuntu 10.10 on my Acer Aspire One for a few days now. Its current OS is Win7 Starter, if that even matters.

-I made a USB drive and Ubuntu boots and runs just fine.

-I hit the "install Ubuntu" icon and it has me choose my language, then I hit forward.

-It asks if I want to install updates and/or third party apps, I check the boxes and hit forward - and then it just sits there with the cursor spinning like its trying to do something, but it never does. The longest I have let it sit there was four hours, and still nothing happened.

**This is the step it always stops on. Could the problem be that I am trying to install the desktop version instead of the netbook version? I tried the netbook version and I just don't like it as much.

I cannot verify the live cd either, I get the same black screen.

It obviously looks like a video issue but I'm not sure how to solve it. By the way, there's a long thread about installing Ubuntu 9.04 at URL... and there are several known issues, but I didn't see anything like this. I'll try to install Ubuntu later and see how it goes, but I'd really like to be able to get Fedora working...

Ubuntu Installation :: Acer Laptop Hangs After Fresh Install And First Update / Sort It?

Jun 12, 2010

I just installed 10.04 on an Acer 4736 laptop and was prompted for a software update of about 170 MB.

I went through with the update downloads and installation, got an error message of some packages not being found, and clicked on the "close" button on the dialogue to finish with the whole thing.

Now the Update Manager window with the grayed-out package updates didn't go away, and the cursor would always show the "busy" circle thing. I waited for a while, but nothing happened. I tried opening Firefox to check for anything about this on the net, but it wouldn't open.

So I left it alone, and it the screen went black (screensaver, I guess). When I tried to get back to the desktop, I couldn't. Screen wouldn't respond and it stayed black; no password prompt or anything.

Ctrl-Alt-Backspace wouldn't take me back to the login screen either.

Fedora Installation :: How To Install Epson DX8450 Printer On Acer Aspire One?

Mar 6, 2009

I wonder if you can help me please. I purchased an Acer Aspire One netbook running Linpus Linux on it for my daughter. She absolutely love it and so far I have managed to update Open Office to Open Office 3.0.1, installed Skype and installed Firefox 3.She has been doing her homework and would like to print it off but I can't get my Epson DX8450 to work with it. I tried installing drivers from http://www.avasys.jp/lx-bin2/linux_e/spc/DL1.do (which is where Epson tell you to go). I installed some drivers and the printer started to print it was doing some strange things like printer two lines of the same single line, missing the top off the letters and putting two line spaces in between each line.

I am all new to this but does anybody advice or even provide step by step instructions on how to install the printer (if they have this model printer themselves). Also how to I remove the drivers that I installed last night that obviously are incompatible?

Fedora Installation :: F13 Unable To Boot Install DVD On Acer Aspire 5738Z

Jul 23, 2010

I have F11 running on my Acer laptop and I'd like to install F13 on a newly created partition.I have downloaded the DVD install a couple of days ago and tried to boot it using different options, but always failed. Below my attempts:

1) first option (Install or upgrade): it took a looooong time (like 4 or 5 hours) to get to the Loading vmlinuz message; after a couple more hours it was still there (with 4 or 5 dots more) and I decided that enough was enough;

2) second option (basic video driver): I tried it with and without the nomodeset option and in both cases the Loading vmlinuz message was immediate, but couldn't get past it;

3) first option (Install or upgrade) with the nomodeset option: again the Loading vmlinuz message was immediate, it added up to 10 or 11 dots and then hung;

4) I also tried to boot the same DVD on another laptop (just to rule out media problems) and quickly reached the first install screen, so the DVD is ok I think.

Note that in ALL the above described attempts, when the boot process hang I see my HD led constantly on and also the DVD led flashing.

Ubuntu Networking :: Acer Aspire One D250-1958 W/ AR928X - No Wireless - Netbook Picks Signal - When Provide Key It Fails To Connect

May 13, 2010

I have a new Acer Aspire One, model D250-1958. It uses the Atheros AR928X. I've tried Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10 and Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.04, as well as the conventional Ubuntu. Everything works beautifully, except no wireless. The netbook picks up the signal, but when I provide the Key it fails to connect, and eventually prompts me for the key again.

I've tried to research this on my own, but haven't found a solution. In particular, the solution reported by narnie for his Acer Aspire One D250-1584, <HERE>, didn't work for me.

I'd really like to get this working. The netbook will be much less useful if it can't make use of our wireless router.

Fedora Installation :: F11 - Graphical Install Fails - Text Install Has No Fdisk

Jun 28, 2009

I have been using Redhat/Fedora for 11 years. I don't understand why Fedora 11, can't even do a vga graphical install, when Windows can.

I tried many parameters, including xdriver=vesa, and it cannot used graphical install.

So, I tried text install, which I have done many times in the past.

However, F11 seems crippled, in that it will NOT do the same install achievable from a graphical install.

It will NOT allow the use of fdisk, and it will NOT allow any selection of any packages.

What is the point of this option?

Even after trying all of this, for a dual boot install, and F11 claims to have installed, there is no grub or equivalent, and the computer just boots windows, just like Fedora 11 did absolutely nothing.

What are the options now? Why is text install so crippled and incomplete? Why is standard VGA mode so hard?
