I am trying to create an usb install from an gnome-live cd. All I have done is not working:

fedora liveusb-creator
fusbi
linuxlive usb creator
unetbootin
pendrive
All I can get are errors saying cang find kernel or error like that. I have used linux and windows environment. The iso I am using is fine, I am sure because I have instaled it on two pcs. Iso gnome-live >> usb (bootable to install)
I tried most of the methods using a graphical interface to create a live USB through a 64-bit dvd image to install opensuse 11.2 including unetbootin, Win32DiskImager, Mandriva's Seed... Everything failed, so I'm left with the option to do it through the command prompt. There is a dd tool for Windows, and I got the command line instructions in the Live USB page. One thing I don't understand is that how is insert my path of the iso image for this command in Windows: # dd if=/path/to/iso/openSUSE-11.2-KDE4-LiveCD-i686.iso of=/dev/sdX bs=4M;sync; Should I replace the bit # dd if=/path/to/iso/openSUSE-11.2-KDE4-LiveCD-i686.iso, with like something like # dd if= CDownloadsOpensuse11.2x-64.iso?

I could order the box with an install disk and printed manual, but if there's any way of creating a bootable USB stick from the download I did to my mac, that would be great.

I'd like to put both the 32-bit and 64-bit OSS 11.3 onto a 2GB usb stick from their respective Live CD ISOs. I tried to make a partitions on the usb ( 1GB ) each, and then dd each ISO to separate partitions, make 1 of the partition bootable. But that doesn't work, even from the bootable partition. Any suggestions how to achieve that goal? Ideally there would be a main boot loader, which then provides option to boot each of the distro.

I've used the old method with dd ... and the new one with dd_rescue ..., shown in SDB:Live USB stick - openSUSE This way a partition is created (sdb1 or sdc1 or ...), with the Linux file system (ID: 83). One of the problems of this system is that all the data of the pendrive is deleted. Another problem is that sometimes openSUSE doesn't load completely and I cannot use it. And another of the problems is that even if I create another partition (for example to make the Live USB persistent and "remember" the configuration of my computer) and I put some of my photos, songs, films there when I plug the pendrive in a computer running Windows XP I cannot access the data. (What about Vista and 7?)
Other Linux distros can be put in pendrives using the FAT file system (for example W95 FAT32 (LBA), ID: c). This way my personal data or files (photos, documents, ...) can be opened from a computer running Windows XP (and the personal data is not erased when putting the Linux in the pendrive). So I would like to know how to create a Live USB drive with personal files that are avaiable for many Operating Systems, including Windows XP. Perhaps the solution is to put openSUSE in a FAT file system, or put it in Linux file system but create another partition with FAT file system (for this openSUSE should avoid the 1st partition, sdX1, that should be for the personal data, so Windows XP can access it).

Boots fine on another pc with on-board radeon pci-x.It also doesn't work in latest Virtualbox. Need I remind you: very, very bad impression for non-linux afficianados...I'm a happy user of 11.1 and 11.2 on same physical pc.

I can't browse any of partition with any of browsers inside liveCD including dolphin. When i try to access it says: There is no application installed that can open files of the type block device (inodelockdevice). Do you want to try to install one? Is there another option to access partitions because I can't install another browser on live cd.
View 2 Replies View RelatedIm trying out popular distros running on Gnome.. to see possible installation candidate And having one problem with OpenSUSE 11.3 Gnome out of the box...I can not enable desktop effects.. it says it can not be done on my hardware configuration...My hardware: AMD Athlon 64bit 3000+, Ati Radeon X600 256MB, 2GB DDR2, 160GB HDD...In every other distro I tried from live CD.. I could enable desktop effects.Now I have tried update in that live session.. and when gone to that software application it asked and I downloaded 130Mb of software.flash player..etc... but I still did not have desktop effects... So my question is can it be done with my configuration... Works fine in ubuntu with Open drivers (radeon)...I would really like to make it possible on live CD.. because I dont wanna install and then see that I can not enable it...I know that most driver manipulations need restart.. so live session can not do that...But can you say if I could even make it happen on Raden X600? No problems in Fedora, Ubuntu...
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a SONY PCG-R505TE laptop with an external CD/DVD, it connects via what I think is a PCMCIA card, the drive came with the laptop and functions fine. I currently have Windows XP running on this laptop, but it's very slow.I downloaded openSUSE-11.3-GNOME-LiveCD-i686.iso and sucessfully burned it to a CD.I have the laptop bios set to boot from CD, and it appears to be doing that no problem. When it boots I first see the welcome screen, then the openSUSE Installer, whether I select the Live (GNOME) option, or the Installation.. it loads the kernel, and then loads the KIWI boot systemit is on the third event, waiting for CD/DVD dvices to appear... that something seems to fail... I then see Failed to detect CD/DVD or USB drivethen a rebootexception and it reboots in 120 seconds.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've currently have opensuse 11.3 installed on my system and I would like to do a new fresh install of opensuse 11.4. I therefore downloaded the DVD 11.4 x64 install. However, when booting the kernel from the DVD (that leads to the installation procedure) I obtain the following error message "unable to handle kernel paging request". The system then stops and I need to perform a hard reset to restart again. The same happens if I try do boot from the live gnome CD. Thus, I'm unable to install opensuse 11.4 at all due to this problem. A possible solution would be to perform a hot update (i.e. changing repositories in my 11.3 and perform a zypper refresh and zypper dup). But I'm a bit scared of doing this since this will install the problematic kernel. how to circumvent this problem ? Is there any updated version of the live CD? I've been able to install opensuse 11.4 x64 without problems at home. Now I'm trying to install it at work. The current kernel (at work) is:

Does the gnome live cd install a "live version" of OpenSUSE or a "standard version? I used knoppix 4.x long time ago... I don't want to end up with a default user called linuxuser and not be able to save any changed unless I created an additional read/write partition.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm running a Lucid Wubi system and I just got everything exactly the way I like it. My brother was having a hard time with Windows and I recommended Linux. Well being the inpatient person he is, he wasn't impressed with it "right out the box". But he's seen my setup and still wants to give it a shot. So I was curious if there was a way to create a Live CD from the way I have it already instead of downloading the "start-up" version from the site? I think they call them distros but I'm not for sure. This would be great I think to help introduce my brother and others to this awesome OS, and plus when I mess with the wrong things(which I have, and will again) I could re-install it from where I was instead of having to redo everything.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI downloaded the live cd iso and installed it on usb using this command (while it was unmounted):ddif=open SUSE-11.2-KDE4-LiveCD-i686.iso of=/dev/sdc bs=4M...I then restarted and it loads into a main openSUSE screen, I choose the "OpenSUSE 11.2" and it starts loading. Then it shows the progress abr under the gecko guy and it starts to load, that moves to a few diff. places on the screen and then it goes black. Any ideas?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am using an HCL k38 pdc laptop and I am unable to boot KDE live cd of opensuse 11.4. The system boots to a graphical screen where a progress bar is shown. the progress bar proceeds to about 90% and then my system hangs. ALl I can see on my screen is that graphical image with suse logo and progress bar. Though my mouse works and I can move it all around the desktop but if I try pressing any key (CAPS/NUM LOCK/SCROLL LOCK) i dont see any LED notification for that. this concludes that the system is hanged.
Key board has no issue as I can use it in Windows.
I tried to boot the lice cd in text mode and it worked very fine from there I installed the system on to my HDD in dual boot mode with windows XP. But after installation when I boot opensuse from HDD it stucks at the same position.
I think this issue is with Nvidea graphics card as when the system boots I see an error message that says that the RAM has an address conflict with VGA ROM.
How can I use opensuse. I have even tried ubuntu 10.10 but it also hangs while booting or after booting. So far I have been able to manage only Sabayon Linux working on this machine however the ubuntu 9.10 was working on this system and it also started behaving similarly after I upgraded it to ubuntu 10.04.
I have done a big big mistake (I could beat myself up for that) with my netbook and now I am sitting here, not getting openSUSE installed on it.
I wanted to try another netbook linux and installed (more by accident than intentionally) Easy Peasy Linux. This system is not bad, but cannot work with the wireless adapter in my netbook. However, I then wanted to install openSUSE 11.4 again, which ran fine on the netbook. But the install always gets stuck in different stages and I donīt know why.
Sometimes a failure message comes up: "filesystem is read only, rebooting in 120 seconds", but I am not really sure if this is for the harddrive or the usb stick. In other occasions, the bootprocess until install gets stuck at "starting KDM". Nothing happens then... thats it.
I already have reformatted the usb stick and copied the openSUSE Live CD via Imagewriter on it again... no success.
So now I am really confused, because I donīt know if there is something wrong with the harddrive? Or is it the stick itself? How can I find this out?
If it is the harddrive, how can I at least refomat it? Remember: no CD or DVD drive, just USB stick...
How can I find out if the image on the stick is ok? I already tested the install media and it said: "checksum ok"
I'd like to have both on my system to try out but I don't want to delete my OS to download and install the install DVD. Did I pooch the screw here?

I am now log-in as live user, but I can't find the shotcut for installation on desktop "install to hard drive" but using the terminal, there's a file under Desktop, 'liveinst.desktop" I tried running it, graphical installation will appear, but during copying to hard disk, it says bad media.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am currently running 11.2 on my PC and have been doing so since it was released with no problems. When I try and install from my DVD (MD5sum and media verified) all goes well until the installer gets to the "searching for linux partitions" bit and then it dies completely. I have tried installing from a KDE and GNOME live CD and they both boot cleanly and load a usable desktop in both cases with internet access and all my Windows and openSUSE 11.2 partitions visible and browsable.
When I try to install from either of these discs Yast2 gets loaded and then just dies. I am at a total loss as to how to progress any further. Incidentally Fedora 13 won't install either so I suspect it is a kernel issue as my hardware has not changed since I installed openSUSE 11.2. I have been using SUSE since 10.0 and have never has any problems installing before now.
I tried installing 11.4 from the live CD on a new motherboard (ASRock N68C-S UCC) and the very first screen (license agreement) comes out so garbled that I can not read anything from it. I tried to run rather then install from the live CD, with the same result.
Hitting F3 and changing the resolution to 800x600 still did not fix this. I find it surprising, because I would expect the installation process to use low quality graphics and therefore not be too bothered about the specifics of the graphics chipset (NVidia GeForce 7025 / nForce 630a in this case).For reference the machine has 1 GB ram.There is no such problem with the 11.3 live CD, which is what I ended up using. So no problem in terms of getting the PC up and running.
I just downloaded OpenSuse 11.1 64 bit live cd from it's official site.I have live usb creater in my xp box , with the help of which I successfully created live USB for fedora 11 earlier. Now the problem is whenever I try to create live usb using Opensuse live ISO image after extracting all files to usb , it gets failed.The same thing is happening with OpenSolaris 11 live cd iso image. Does this mean that live usb creater I have, was only foe Fedora distros?
