OpenSUSE Hardware :: Custom Resolution Setting With NVidia Graphic Hardware?

Whenever I login or restart the computer, my resolution gets reset. I think it may have to do with my setup being connected to a 18.5" HDTV. Is there a way to set custom resolutions in the OS, so that Nvidia and OpenSUSE can recognize them?

I have ubuntu 10.10 installed on my computer in dual boot with windows 7, but i am using a 27-inches Samsung screen through an hdmi cable to connect my computer. whenever i try getting on ubuntu, i cannot see the top and bottom of the desktop (so i cant access the menu bar or anything!)(while using my spare vga cable) i tried downloading the nvidia driver & utility for my video card (gtx 460), but even using that, i could not setup my screen resolution manually. When i setup my windows, i was able to manually setup a custom resolution (i.e. 1842x1026) through the nvidia utility to be able to get the screen the fit properly.
I was wondering if there is any way i could do the same for ubuntu, perhaps through terminal.

I have a Philips 19' HDTV I use as my monitor, I have tried every guide out there, including the wiki one with xandr. Nothing works for me. This seems like it should be way easier, set custom resolution go.. but this isn't the case.
Using Ubuntu 10.04 -
I've tried editing the xorg.conf and adding the modelines and changing the modes , I've tried the xandr commands. I've tried guides from years ago to current ones. I'm desperate, Everything is cut off like maybe an inch not even. Can just barely see the edges of the top and bottom bars.
I've been working on this for many many hours coming up with nothing every time. I wish there was a way to just resize the desktop.

I'm trying to get my resolution to match the resolution I use in Windows 7 which is 1768 x 992 (50hz) Nvidia Geforce 210, LG Electronics 37LF75 - At the moment the top and bottom are both missing off the screen. Everytime I try to adjust my xorg.conf file it hangs at boot. Not really sure what exactly I'm doing with it.

I have what I think is a pretty eay question. I'm trying to set the screen resolution of my new 10.10 installation to 1920x1080. The monitor only supports up to 1024x768, but i would like more area. I've done this before but I forgot how i did it. In the end the screen spilled off to the sides and when I ran my cursor over to that section it would disply it. I have a feeling that i need to edit my xorg.conf file, but my nvidia drive has some new mode types and i figured I'd ask before making random changes.

I need to set my resolution to 1280x1024. Problem is, that the NVIDIA X Server Settings does not display such a resolution and I want to use that! My monitor is an LCD capable of upto 1280x1024 75HZ resolution. I'm using Ubuntu 10.10. I did the xrandr command to check what resolutions are available and its output was:

I have installed the Nvidia drivers on my desktop using [URL] according to the Debian way. Everything seems to be fine except the resolution. The best it will let me choose is something like 600x480. I have searched and most of what is suggested around the web is to change xorg.conf. I have tried this using different setting suggested but nothing is working. I did not have a xorg.conf file so I created one with the setting suggested on the Debian wiki.

Ubuntu 10.04, nVidia GeForce 9400, driver ver 195.36.15.When I log in, the system always comes up in 800x600 mode. I went into the NVIDIA X Server Settings page and changed it to my preferred setting of 1152x864. I hit Apply, then Save to X Configuration File (with correct root password).All is well until restarting. Then it reverts back. The update doesn't stick. How can I make this the permenant setting?

I've been using Ubuntu on and off for the past few years, however since the release of Ubuntu 10.04 I have decided to dedicate my Dell laptop to Ubuntu. Everything is up and running smoothly with one exception: my screen resolution. My graphics card is an NVidia Geforce Go 7300, and as such I am using the "NVidia accelerated graphics driver (version current)." Compiz is working properly and the only issue I'm having with this setup is that my screen resolution is way too large for me to be able to see it. The screen is a 15.4 inch and the native resolution of 1680x1050 is exceptionally difficult to read. In the NVidia settings I am looking for a resolution of 1280x800, a resolution which I have used before on this laptop in a different operating system, however the closest I can come without stretching the image is 1440x900. I have searched both this forum and google religiously in search of an answer to this problem - not just today, but many times in the past; once for each version of Ubuntu that was released. Each attempt mutilating the xorg.conf file in a different manner, yet all to no avail. I have spent a woeful amount of my life trying to fix this issue, however I have succumb to failure and futility each time. I am willing to try a vast number of things that I have not already attempted in order to fix this, as well as a few tried methods that I may have executed incorrectly; as I would like to have a readable screen with which to use my laptop. Below is the contents of my laptop's current xorg.conf file.

In System Settings under Appearance>Style>Fine Tuning tab there is the following setting for graphic effects. what it does and how it works because I don't seem to see any difference in the effect the settings have. By default it seems set to low display resolution and high CPU. This seems opposite to what one would expect it to be.

I tried to install the NVIDIA graphic card drivers on my laptop XPS 1340, running with opensuse 11.2. There are two graphic cards, the integrated one and the NVIDIA one. I installed the drivers correctly by doing

but when trying to configure the x-server

I am finding a lot of issues with flash in 11.4 release. As I know it is flash issue, because some people after updating flash on 11.3 got the same problem.
Flash seams to be crashing or/and slowing down web browser. After trying to figure out where is the problem, i found that:
1) removing SLI helped a little bit
2) updating to beta (270) nvidia drivers helped a little bit (moving window with flash animation from one screen to another one that is connected to different graphic card does not crash the browser anymore)
But still the problem exists.
For example, sometimes when i minimize the window with flash animation and i open new window (e.g. with spreadsheet) and move it on the same place where was previous window with flash, I can see this flash animation as a background of the new window....
Also, when i am moving the window with flash around, the flash disappears or gets gray.
Sometimes, ..... does not load the movie, but if i open the movie in VM windows, it works fine. After reloading Xwindows it works for a while also in opensuse.

From here I went to this page: SDB:Configuring graphics cards - openSUSE Its mentioned on this page that: Upon installing openSUSE, the X system's automatic configuration may have failed to properly configure the graphics correctly. Typically this results in either a black screen upon reboot, or the wrong resolution being displayed on the monitor.
I have none of these problems. But after searching for inability of desktop effects to become activated, I found that nVIDIA graphic card drivers are must for these effects. After clicking "My computer" icon on desktop, I found Display Info as following:
Vendor: nVidia Corporation
Model: G98 [GeForce 8400 GS]
2D driver: nouveau
3D driver: nouveau Gallium (7.8.2)
Can anyone tell me 'Is nouveau an alternative for nVIDIA'? Is this the reason for no wrong resolution or black screen upon boot. That means my computer graphics are working correctly. Then why does Desktop Effects are not getting enabled.
After searching for Kaffeine media player extra codecs to play media files, I incidentally found the following options: I opened Yast Control Center @ linux-o26a Software> Add on Products > installed Add-On Products > Community Repositories > clicking Next, this opened a window with "List of Online repositories" where there is an option of "NVIDIA Repository". If I install it, will it enable the "Desktop effects"

I recently changed my Graphic card drivers from Nouveau to nVIDIA in Suse 11.3 KDE.
One thing I have noticed that initially I had been using various Adobe Fonts in many applications prior to change of drivers. But after this change the looks of the same fonts became quite different, the length & breadth of "individual letters" changed quite a lot making them look not so beautiful as they were earlier. Am I missing something or is it a normal phenomenon. But I am satisfied with the present looks.

I dont know were to begin to solve my problem and I have been googling for hours to get a hint without any success. I'm runnning a Counterstrike Server on my virtual openSuse server - I'm exploring so don't justify what I am hosting at the moment
I want to make it possible to gain access to the cstrike folde via a ftp login. But I really have no idea were to start. The server is also a webserver, where I can ass FTP accounts for my apache vhosts via plesk - but I dont think this is the solution of my problem, isn't it?

I just installed Suse 11.3 64bit on a new build. My video card is a nvidia gt240. I am using the default drivers. My monitor is a NEC 17" LCD.
When I boot up the screen resolution defaults to 1280x1024. I can go to applications>configure desktop>display and set it to 1024x768, which is my resolution of choice, and it works until I reboot or log out and log back in, then it resets to 1280x1024.
I would like to make 1024x768 the default so I don't have to keep changing it. Is there a way to do this? The output of xrandr looks like this:

Is there a way to change my resolution to something specific? I was trying to make my display "less-widescreen" when I accidently made it completely changed.
From the sax2 command, there is only 1400*1050 and 1600*1200, both that are not what I'm looking for and messes up my display. Now, I can't change it back to the original, much less the one I'm looking for (1600*900).

I've tried installing Nvidia drivers on opensuse 11.3 (32 bit) for my graphics card which is a GeForce 250 GTS. Regardless of whether I do it 'the hard way' which I'm familiar with, or the Yareg repository way found on this forum I get the same behaviour
Best resolution I can get after installing Nvidia drivers is 640x480, if I rename xorg.conf in an attempt to force auto-detection I get 1024x768. I've tried everything I can find on nvidia drivers for 11.3 like adding nomodeset to the menu.lst grub entry, setting no_kms_in_initrd to yes, definitely installing under runlevel 3 etc
Same thing happens, I can run nvidia-settings ok which I think suggests the driver is installed and initialised, nothing I try will let me use better than 1024x768. Same machine with 11.2 installed handles 1680x1050 perfectly

When I boot my computer I get this message: Warning Pc video resolution is out of range Change setting to recommended resolution 1280x1024 @60mh So I hit ctrl alt f1 I typed in Sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg Nothing happens. It's been very frustrating because with everything that I've looked up it says that it's suppose to guide me through something. I desperately need my computer for school.

I'm having a real fight with an Nvidia 6100 video under 11.2. I cannot get anything besides 1024x768 or 800x600 resolution with any technique besides doing an upgrade installation over an existing 11.1 system. I want 1440x900 for this wide screen LCD and that works with the upgrade install but that gets me into other problems with versions and other stuff - not a desireable choice.
OK. I know that the Nvidia driver (190.53) works as all is well under the upgrade. When I do a totally clean installation or a clean install with the existing /home I get a default 1024x768. If I use sax2 to try and change it one of two things happens: the change is ignored or I drop to 800x600 and the ball game is over: I'm stuck there, period. Other than a couple of commented-out lines, xorg.conf is the same as it was or 11.1 (and back to 10.1 after allowing for version changes) after running sax2 but even nvidia-settings won't give anything beyond 1024x768 if I try and use that.
I've been through the how-to stuff and back messages here but I'll be darned if I can force the desired 1440x900. I had a similar issue with 10.2 or so where the only way to get it right the first time was to set the desired resolution to 1440x900 during the hardware setup during the installation but that seems to have disappeared along with xorg.conf which only appears after running sax2. I can't even use the manual diting tricks in xorg.conf I've had to use with some cards - it seems to be completely ignored and I can't see any real problem with it anyway once sax2 builds it. On a couple of machines with later version of the Nvidia video everything is working as expected, at least with GF 6800 and higher video.

I am running 11.1 with an nVidia GeForce FX 5200 graphics card and I have configured the monitor and graphics card via "sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia". My xorg shows all of the correct monitor settings and screen resolutions, yet when I go to the Display settings or nvidia-settings, it does not offer me any of the 16:10 aspect resolutions that are in the xorg.conf file.

New pooter, just installed SuSE 11.1. Would appreciate some insight into which Nvidia driver is right for my system, and what is the maximum resolution I can use without potentially causing any damage (if that's even a real concern).Here are the specifics.

So, now the questions.
a) Should I leave both sets of drivers installed, or should I delete one of them?
b) If delete, which should be taken off?
c) If neither of these drivers is the right one, which do you suggest I get instead?
d) I currently have the resolution set at 1920X1440. Is there any reason to worry that I might be overdriving anything and potentially causing damage to the system?

I have an nVidia GeForce 7600GS with a dual monitor setup. A 19" Dell @ 1280x1024, and a 19" widescreen Acer @ 1440x900. The Dell is attached via DVI, and the resolution is detected properly, and set, but the Acer is connected via VGA, and so the native resolution is unkown to the nvidia control panel. I've recently jump from the Ubuntu/Mint ship, and figured I've give a polished KDE distribution a shot. Of course I turned to OpenSuSE, and I love it so far. I've resisted KDE quite a lot since 4.x came out but it's really come along. Much better than the (in my opinion) monstrous disaster that Gnome has become.
Anyways, on to my problem: I've installed the proprietary Nvidia drivers via the one-click-install shown in the wiki, and that worked great. But now my resolution at boot - that is the boot/loading screen, not my desktop - is shown at a very low resolution instead of my native resolution, like it was with OpenSuSE's default open-source Nvidia driver, which I'm guessing is Nouveau. On Ubuntu, this was pretty easy to correct; all you had to do was edit /etc/default/grub and put your resolution there, and tinker with some other options so that instead of Plymouth trying to set its own, it just carries over Grub's specified resolution. But I can't seem to do that with OpenSuSE. For one, I don't see /etc/default/grub, and more than that, I don't think you guys use Plymouth. I could be wrong on that second point, though. So, how can I change the boot screen's resolution to my native resolution? I'm using the latest Stable release (11.4) and latest Nvidia drivers. Other than that, the install is new.

I am new to opensuse and have installed 11.2 KDE. It is simply perfect for my system. However after the initial setup the display resolution was set perfectly fine for my 18.5" LED monitor, default resolution was 1366x768, and everything looked good from desktop to fonts but the OSS drivers didn't support compositing so I decided to switch to nvidia drivers. I installed the driver as shown in openSUSE repositories page, for my 6600GT card. Now after rebooting everything is stretched,even the fonts look really ugly and fuzzy.
I am unable to find any mode in Nvidia XServer settings that would correct the current ugly stretched display. I am unable to set 1366x768 manually as well, doing so my PC won't boot to KDM but rather sticks to console. Now it's for sure that my monitor and display card supports 1366x768 resolution but it's just that nvidia drivers/Nvidia XServer settings won't let me set that resolution. How can I set the resolution or even better if I can enable compositing using OSS drivers then that would be great an dm willing to switch back.

I have installed latest Nvidia driver from the official website i had no problem installing it ( i stopped gdm installed the driver and then restarted gdm ) but the problem is that each time i reboot my ubuntu 10.04 i lose the graphic configurations and i have just to reinstall the Nvidia Driver to make 3d acceleration enabled how can i solve this by installing the driver once and for all
