I use a desktop with an unsupported VIA graphic card which lucid cannot find resolution higher than 800x600so I have to use generic video driver to get resolution higher then 800x600. My question is, which generic driver is better, vesa or fbdev or any other generic driver.

I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 as a virtual machine under my Win7 windows. Everything is OK except that I can not get resolution higher than 800*600. Actually there are two options in Display Settings Menu 800*600 and 640*480. But my laptop has 15.4 inch monitor so its normal resolution is 1280*800.

View 4 Replies View RelatedIm running fedora 11. I pressed the desktop effects button yesterday, and it suddenly changed my resolution to 800x600 when it was previously a lot higher. I couldn't fix it, so i reinstalled fedora 11. Couldn't fix it. Reinstalled Windows XP, then reinstalled fedora 11, and it fixed. Now, 12 hours on, it has gone back to 800x600. How can i fix this?!
View 4 Replies View RelatedOkay, so here is the deal I have been using Ubuntu for awhile as a network monitoring system and have now changed it to being my main system and was wondering why when my machine is hooked up to my HDTV via a VGA port on the back of VIZIO television, I am only getting a max resolution of 800x600? If anyone can help me with this problem it would be awesome.Any additional information needed please include you terminal commands because I am still just so terrible with those.

Why can WinXP set 1024x768 without guest additions?
View 2 Replies View RelatedThis is my first posting as a Linux Newbie. I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 inside of a MS Virtual PC on my Vista machine. Everything seems to work beautifully and is stable. However, I would like to use a resolution higher than the current maximum of 800x600. I've poked around on the web and have tried various tips. I tried using the xrandr options which added a higher resolution mode, but when I would try to set the output to that resolution, I would get an error message to the effect that I could not exceed the current maximum of 800x600.
I tried to cobble parameter values together and create an xorg.conf file, but every iteration seems to produce a bunch of colorful vertical bars within my Virtual PC window, and I would have to blow away that virtual PC setup and rebuild it (along with reinstalling Ubuntu). As I said, 800x600 is not a show stopper, but I would like to take advantage of the real estate I have with my display. These "fifty-five year old" eyes could benefit from the larger size. FYI, I did take a stab at installing Virtual Box, but got the infamous "blue screen", so I would rather stick with what appears to be a stable virtual PC base.
In my laptop i have an ATI radeon HD 3200 , I installed Fedora 10 and also the fglrx driver I have 3d acceleration and works well. The problem is that the display makes a weird sound when i use a resolution higher than 800x600, and the display appears like "Unknown". The Display is a : 14" HD Acer CineCrystal LED LCD.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm currently using ubuntu 10.04 version. I've recently purchased a BenQ E2200HD monitor. However, the monitor is unable to configure a resolution higher than 800x600. I've tried changing it via 'preferences' - 'monitor' etc. The monitor model is 'unknown'. and the highest resolution available is the 800x600.
I've tried changing it manually, but it says x.cong file does not exist. Xrandr doesnt seem to work either. Or i would get CTRC 262. My current set up is, intel i5 2600, 4GB Ram, Nvidia GTS 240. I'm pretty certain, my graphics card (despite being in the low end) can support HD resolution. Even if it can't, it surely can support a resolution higher than 800x600.
I am using Intel builtin VGA card. I got a problem with resolution which is max here 800*600. I want to set it to 1024*768. I already did that using xandr but the problem is every time I restart I get to my default settings feeling like ubuntu discharge all my changes all fields even if i followed the steps of saving.

At the moment I have an INTEL SERIES 4 INTEGRATED GRAPHICS CONTROLLER and I can only get it recognized as a "VGA COMPATIBLE" Due to my eyesight I need to have the resolution smaller something like 1168 x 752 I dont need to be be able to play games or anything like that. Just typing, videos and general PC work. OR if anyone could point me in the direction of installing better drivers for my INTEL card as I know Windows XP can give me resolutions of this depth.

Then I noticed that it's not working well due to an improper installation (didn't use the manual that you provided here). So I uninstalled the driver. Then, after reboot, instead of a regular desktop, I get a CLI and I'm requested to enter my login information. But in the boot menu, if I enter to the failsafe option, then everything works fine. How can I change the CLI to the regular desktop?

I'd prefer a machine with a higher res, but I've heard that Ubuntu will only go as high as 1024x768.I'm guessing, however, that by 9.1, it should recog the higher res while loading and it won't be a problem, but thought I'd check before shelling out on a machine with a nicer display.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed Karmic on an older PC I had laying around, and the only trouble I am having is with screen resolution. It uses an old ATI chipset (onboard) for video, and it doesn't seem to do EDID correctly, so I can't display anything higher than 800x600. I have tried creating an xorg.conf, but it's still not working. How can I tell Xorg to ignore the fact it can't detect a widescreen monitor and display something larger than 800x600? I noticed the log says the sync's are out of range, but I am not sure how to fix it.

I have PC with Motherboard Intel Desktop Board D945GCNL, and Ubuntu 10.10 installed on it. I debootstrapped an install into an existing lvm and booted into it and everything is working great except that after initrd hands off to boot the real root, the text font changes and the resolution is unsupported by my old monitor. The box is up and running because I can ssh in. This is more of an annoyance than anything as I only use the console when something is broken, but it does need to be resolved.
I used dpkg-reconfigure console-setup as described in the debootstrap config guide but I don't see an option for changing the "vga" statement before it regenerates the initrd.
change my resolution from 800x600 to 1024x768..since the latter option is not available in my display settings?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been using Ubuntu for about two years now, then suddenly today (after my PC accidently lost power) the screen resolution changed to 800x600 (it is, in fact, a widescreen monitor, and this resolution looked 'zoomed in'). The only two resolutions detected with xrandr were in the 4:3 ratio (800x600 and something worse). I followed some instructions, trying to reset the resolution to 1024x576.
I got as far as
$ xrandr --newmode "1024x576" ...
then,
$xrandr --addmode default 1024x576
but when I
$xrandr --output default --mode 1024x576
I a message to the effect of 'your screen can only support 800x600 or less'. Ah-ha, I thought, you stupid machine; this screen has had a greater resolution for over a year.
And so, from System->Preferences->Monitor, I forced the computer to switch to this new resolution. When prompted, I reset.
My current problem is that when I turn the computer on, the monitor displays a floating 'Input Not Supported' sign. I Ctrl+Alt+F1'd, and now all 'xrandr' and 'cvt' commands return:

My first priority is to get the computer back to it's less-broken 800x600 state;

After the latest kernel update (2.6.32-26), my computer will no longer start up with a screen resolution higher than 800x600. Before this update, my computer would sometimes startup with this problem, but this could usually be fixed with a restart (or two if necessary). At this resolution the panels and a lot of tool-bars will not display properly, so I am limited as to what I can do using the GUI.
my video card is an S3 unichrome (I think. It is built-in to the motherboard so I don't know for certain) my screen is an old ctr one I am running Ubuntu 10.04 on the 2.6.32-26 kernel

It started when I first installed Ubuntu because I heard it was good and I felt like a change of OS, but it didn't recognise my monitor and because of that it was stuck at the resolution 800x600 (I think) and so it didn't quite look right, also it made going on the Internet really awkward, so I searched on the internet to find out how to fix it and I couldn't find anything that worked, so instead I installed Ubuntu netbook version thinking that it would recognise it because it is meant for laptops, so I put the ISO on a USB and it installed but if I tried to do it again it just tried to reinstall itself (I think it was just because I didn't delete the other Ubuntu) and so I just stopped using the USB, so I eventually gave up and tried to delete linux.
I used the Wubi installer for the original Linux so I used that (in the C drive in the Ubuntu folder) to uninstall it too which looked like it uninstalled it fine, I then made the stupid mistake of using EASUS (I think, I cant check anymore) Partition editor and deleted all of the linux sections and made the C drive bigger, after it finished that my laptop doesn't boot up and im stuck at a black screen with it saying to reboot and insert proper boot device. With it not booting I couldn't do anything, but then I remembered the USB and so I put that in and now it boots to Linux, but I really want my windows 7 back because this linux isn't even installed and wont install, the only way I can use it is by exiting the installer and then using the ubuntu that doesn't really look right and doesn't save anything I do. Is there anyway to get my windows 7 back or am I stuck using this?
I am using Ubuntu 10.10. I am facing a problem with display resolution. My monitor is a 14" Samtron (56v) and with Ubuntu i am stuck with 800x600 resolution.
