OpenSUSE Hardware :: Double-sided Printing With Oki B410d?

Apr 10, 2011

Just configured a new printer, an Oki B410d and have a problem with the automatic double-sided printing:it will only print with the "long-edge flip", no matter if I mark the "short-edge" option. This is very annoying, since I have to print lots of booklets on horizontal A4 paper, and reverse pages are printed upside-down! I'm using the "OKI B4000 / B400 / MB400 PCL" driver from Okidata web page.

OpenSUSE :: No Color Option And Non Double Sided Printing

Apr 6, 2011

I have a Lexmark 736DN printer (color, 2-sided printing). With openSUSE 11.3, there was non specific driver to pick during printer installation: I picked up "Lexmark C772dn Foomatic/Postscript" and everything was fine (at least I didn't notice problems). With openSUSE 11.4, there's no such a driver! Even more, the list of drivers for lexmark is a lot, lot shorter than the list present in 11.3. C772dn is not present so i picked up "Lexmark 4076 - CUPS + Gutenprint v5.2.6": but there is no color option and non double sided printing! what's up? Maybe I miss a rpm with printer's drivers (not installed by default)?

Ubuntu :: Two Sided Printing Not Enabled For Brother HL 2040

Jul 23, 2010

I know for a fact manual duplex is supported by my printer since in windows it is able to do so unproblematically. After downloading official driver from Brother, printer works but File > Print > Page Setup > Layout > Two-sided > "NOT AVAILABLE" (option greyed out). I need the prompts to come up to tell me when to flip the pages and visually illustrate what needs to be done. This prompt and automatic behaviour by the printer is available in Windows. (Do not recommend to me Gnome Manual Duplex. It's a poor substitute for manual duplexing and doesn't even do what it claims to do.) How to get two-sided printing enabled?

Ubuntu :: Brother HL-1230 Printer / Two Sided Printing On A4 Sheet

Jan 29, 2010

Don't know where this should go, so I put it here for starters! I want to print documents on both sides of an A4 sheet, using a Brother HL-1230 printer. Is there a way of getting the odd numbered pages out first (then a pause?) and the even numbered pages after? To do this manually is tedious on a long (14 page) doc. Way back in the days of that other op. sys. I had a program (WordPerfect?) Whose printer driver would do this. Is there one for Ubuntu?

Hardware :: Double Side Printing HP Deskjet?

Feb 25, 2010

I'm using a HP Deskjet F380 multifunction printer on a ubuntu 9.1 machine. It recognises it as an F300 series printer and so far it prints and scans very well. The problem is that I usually print 2 pages per sheet and double side on windows but I cannot do it on linux (in this case the option of printing odd pages first and even pages second is useless). I see there is an option in your printer preferences to print double side but it doesn't work.

Hardware :: Kernel Double Fault, Laptop Froze On Distro / Getting Error Double Fault: 0000 [#1] SMP?

Jun 19, 2010

My laptop's been locking up in Linux (Ubuntu, Backtrack, Puppy) periodically for a while now. When it locked up, it was always immune to the magic of SysRq, which I thought might indicate a hardware problem. It became so bad that I had to stop using the laptop.

Today, when I turned it on and tried to boot into Fedora 12, I got the following error (just once, it just locked up at various points during the splash screen after this once):

double fault: 0000 [#1] SMP
last sysfs file:
CPU 0
odules linked in:
Pid: 1, co m: swapper Not ta nted 2.6.32.11-99.fc 2.x86_64 #VGN-T 250N
RIP: 0010:[<ff

All the seemingly missing letters were really missing, not my typos.

As you can see, kernel version is 2.6.32.11-99.fc12.x86_64 and my laptop is a Sony Vaio TZ 250N (Core 2 Duo ULV 1.2GHZ). Note that with the other remaining kernels from the updates, nothing ever happened other than the locking up. The core temperatures hover pretty high, about 55-60C peak but this is still below the critical temp. Memtest came up clean when the problem first started happening.

(The blueish theme is Azenis, the default looking one is well, the default theme.)

OpenSUSE :: Double Click & Rename The File?

Apr 27, 2010

I'm using 11.2 GNOME for a while now..

As far as I know, GNOME can't act like MS or OSX when we wan't to rename a file..you know, when you slightly re click the file name and its ready to be renamed.. instead, I should go right click - context menu - rename to do that.

Is there any setting or apps for these?

OpenSUSE Install :: Double Checking Value For Update Repository URI (11.3 Or 11.4)

Mar 30, 2011

This is probably not the best question i posted on a forum, but i want to make sure i got something right on the live-upgrade page (SDB:System upgrade - openSUSE)

It says: "Check if [URL] (replace 11.3 with your version)"

I have currently 11.3 installed and want to move to 11.4. Now when it says "replace 11.3 with your version" does that mean current or version that i am migrating to?

Worst thing is i have done this before (from 11.2 to 11.3, but am not sure how i interpreted it at that time)

Ubuntu :: Printing With Exact Size Photos And With Poor Auto Colour Printing But The Situation Remains Unchanged

May 31, 2010

I expected more from ubuntu 10.4 with regards to printing with exact size photos and with poor auto colour printing but the situation remains unchanged! for instance .. the photo size configurations for ubuntu/fspot/gimp and others are not compatible with my printers (HP and Brother) .. here in Europe a typical standard size photo (10x15inches or 150x100mm are not even on the Ubuntu listing? I have tried all listed possibilities including "custom" (which does not seem to ever work correctly?)and the result at best is photos with uneven boarders or at worse my printer goes a bit crazy with much wasted photo paper and expensive ink ...even photos selected for "no boarders" still produces photos with the self same uneven boarders.

I have tried pretty much everything over time following advice in this forum and including using HPlip and updating drivers required for my Brother printer but the root problem seemingly lies with the Ubunto photo size setup listing. Working with Ubuntu over the years I have found that it can do pretty much everything that Windows can do except for this dam ongoing photo quality and configuration problem.

OpenSUSE :: Gnome 3 Preview In 11.3 / Accurately Coordinate Double-click With Random, Intermittent Flashing?

Apr 9, 2011

Since I enjoyed Gnome shell with Ubuntu 9.10 (but Ubuntu runs too slow on this computer for my druthers), I thought it would be fun to check out gnome shell on 11.3. I thought that since my 11.3 has gnome 2.30, that the gnome shell in the software manager would be a concomitant version, so I installed it. I then followed the directions given in the second posting of Enabling Gnome Shell in 11.3?

When I logged back in, I selected Gnome 3 Preview [even though I hadn't thought that that was what I'd installed -- (has openSUSE retired all older versions of Gnome shell?)]. The desktop won't boot (I don't know what the correct way of saying it is). The splash shows, but the icons just intermittently flash off and on at random intervals, never quite making it all the way "on." When I right click the bottom of the screen, I can select "terminal" (when I can accurately coordinate my double-click with the random, intermittent flashing), but then the terminal also does the random, intermittent flashing as well. So I can never get anything typed in. When I reboot, there's no login box.

OpenSUSE :: Printing From Different Trays?

Jun 22, 2010

This question is about the usage of lpr and/or lp.

My printer has 3 trays: #1 is the manual feed, #2 contains paper for the first page of a letter and #3 contains blank paper for the rest of the document. Most letters should be printed using tray#2 for the first page and tray#3 for all subsequent pages of the same document.

It is easy to select a tray for the whole document. The command looks something like:

Code:
lpr -o media=A4 -o media=Upper -Plp document.ps

but for the desired effect I have to prepare the first page (normally with dvips), print that, then prepare the rest and print it separately. This is not very elegant, because the job of another user may be processed in between of the 2 steps. Is there a better way?

OpenSUSE Network :: Get Printing Using IPP

Jul 20, 2011

I am trying to get network printing using IPP working, as per tutorial by Swerdna Linux Printer Sharing: Suse/openSUSE 10.x 11.x IPP Print Server for Linux & Windows Clients I used to have it working fine using openSUSE 11.1, then I upgraded to 11.4 and haven't been able to get it working since.

I can ping the server ok (ping 192.168.1.30) but cannot connect from web browser to [URL] it says "The server at 192.168.1.30 is taking too long to respond." This is the same from any workstation, Windows or Linux. The printer works fine locally on the server box. I noticed that Swerdna's tutorial (which I used successfully to setup this on 11.1) hasn't been updated for 11.2 upwards, I noticed that a couple of files that needed to be changed previously I don't even have in my current 11.4 version, ie /etc/cups/mime.convs and /etc/cups/mime.types. I'm wondering if these are replaced by something else now, and if that has any bearing on my problem.

OpenSUSE :: Printing From KDE Apps Causes Freeze?

Printing from KDE no longer works. Opening a simple text file in Kwrite and attempting to print the document causes kwrite to hang. While Googling on this problem I came across this thread. The case is very similar.

[URL]

Running kwrite from the command line does not provide any information to diagnose this behavior. Printing works from Firefox and OpenOffice. Printers produce test pages ok.

This behavior came about after the HP C6380 stopped scanning. During my investigations I was forced to reinstalled hplip. This may have broken something.

OpenSUSE :: Printing PDF's And Stopping The Printer?

Jun 4, 2011

I'm having trouble with printing a PDF that is in landscape mode. When I tell Okular or Adoble Reader to print a document in landscape mode, the text is Illegible. If I tell it to print as portrait mode, then I can read the text but the end is cut off and there is no way for me to tell Okular or Adobe Reader what the margins are. That option was grayed out.

I'm having another problem: When I cancel the job from the CUPS interface, it says it canceled the job but the printer keeps going and finishes whether I want it to or not. With 11.2, I was able to have it set up so that when I told it to stop the printer, it did so right away. Why can't I get the printer to stop in the middle of a job if I see something wrong with it so that I don't have to waste ink?
