Ubuntu :: Two Sided Printing Not Enabled For Brother HL 2040
Jul 23, 2010
I know for a fact manual duplex is supported by my printer since in windows it is able to do so unproblematically. After downloading official driver from Brother, printer works but File > Print > Page Setup > Layout > Two-sided > "NOT AVAILABLE" (option greyed out). I need the prompts to come up to tell me when to flip the pages and visually illustrate what needs to be done. This prompt and automatic behaviour by the printer is available in Windows. (Do not recommend to me Gnome Manual Duplex. It's a poor substitute for manual duplexing and doesn't even do what it claims to do.) How to get two-sided printing enabled?

I have a brother HL 4040CDN. I'm running ubuntu hardy. Does anybody know if there's a command line option that would allow me to print double sided from this machine? Or if there's a gui that I can download from Brother to specify preferences for this machine?

Don't know where this should go, so I put it here for starters! I want to print documents on both sides of an A4 sheet, using a Brother HL-1230 printer. Is there a way of getting the odd numbered pages out first (then a pause?) and the even numbered pages after? To do this manually is tedious on a long (14 page) doc. Way back in the days of that other op. sys. I had a program (WordPerfect?) Whose printer driver would do this. Is there one for Ubuntu?

I believe I have installed my Brother HL 2040 printer on my Fedora 11 64 bit system. However, every time I click printer the printer goes through its warm up procedure but it does not print anything. There is paper in the tray and I know it was working when I was running Fedora 10. It is shown under the Printers heading under Administration.

I tried to print something today with my Brother HL-2040 series printer, and it seems like there are no drivers for that particular model. Is there a source I haven't thought of, or are there really no drivers?

In the past when I had Slackware 12 with brother HL-2040 printer drivers installed, the printer was working fine. Then I upgraded to slackware 13, but I had too many problems with it so I downgraded back to 12 and reinstalled everything related to slackware 12. Now I can't get the printer to work properly. I installed both the LPR and the CUPS drivers (in RPM packages) provided by brother for linux. I find that now every time I try to print something (even graphics) in KDE 3.5 (for slackware 12), the printer prints excessive pages where the first page starts with something like this:
%!PS-Adobe-3.0
%%LanguageLevel: 1
Are there any special settings that I am unaware of that I should be changing in order for the proper printout to appear? Is there something special that I have to install that I wasn't previously told about?

I'm trying to get a Brother HL-2040 printer working, without much success. I installed the brother-cups driver, but that didn't work. When I try to print, the printer just shoots out blank pages, and the only way I can stop it is by unplugging the printer. Worked OK on Ubuntu 10.10. I have gnome fallback, if that matters. There's a post saying that I need to download a ppd file, [URL] but when I try to get it, it opens a page instead of downloading a file. Also the information is from 2008, and I don't know how well that will work with all the changes that have been made to Ubuntu and the newer kernel. I got lucky! went to: [URL] and got the .deb files for the lpr driver and the cups driver. Had to use sudo dpkg -i in the terminal, as I couldn't get the software GUI to work. But it prints.

I am having difficulty with my brother hl-2040 printer. Linux recognizes the printer and it's set as the default. The job shows up in the printer queue as completed, but nothing comes out of the printer.

I cannot modify my printer in Cups. In the past when I wanted to add a printer, or modify an installed printer, I clicked on the Admin tab, and I get a prompt to enter a password. I never get the prompt to enter user - root and the root password. So I can not add a printer, or modify one that is installed. My Brother HL-2040 is still working, I can print jobs O.K. it will not print test page. Why do I care? I want to have a better understanding of the location on the lpr and cupswrapper drivers on this system.
I have installed Slackware 13.1 on a second drive, and am trying to convert to that system. In 13.1 cups asks me for Admin user and password, I can enter root + password, and add a printer, and Mandy used to. However, in 13.1 after converting the .rpm files to .tgz files and installing them with pkgtool, I can not 'see' the lpr or cupswrapper driver in 13.1. I wanted to see what it looked like in Mandriva, however I can't and don't know why.

I have openSUSE 11.2 and printer Brother HL-2040 connected to my openSUSE laptop. It was correctly recognized by manufacturer and model and was "automagically" installed by downloading the appropriate driver. Whenever I click "print" its name correctly appears on the page on which you choose where to send the print jobs to. And when I click "print" it prints... empty pages. When I chose to print the test page, 10 empty pages came out.
This printer worked just fine under Ubuntu 9.04 and winXP. I read the topic here about HL-2040 in openSUSE 11.2 using the driver of 2060 but upon checking both the printer config page and CUPS web admin page it was confirmed that the driver is actually the correct required one, HL-2060 Foomatic/Postscript.

Although I can use system-config-printer to set double-sided printing for a network attached HP4650, jobs are printed single-sided. Double-sided printing worked with fc7 with the same printer.

I have a Lexmark 736DN printer (color, 2-sided printing). With openSUSE 11.3, there was non specific driver to pick during printer installation: I picked up "Lexmark C772dn Foomatic/Postscript" and everything was fine (at least I didn't notice problems). With openSUSE 11.4, there's no such a driver! Even more, the list of drivers for lexmark is a lot, lot shorter than the list present in 11.3. C772dn is not present so i picked up "Lexmark 4076 - CUPS + Gutenprint v5.2.6": but there is no color option and non double sided printing! what's up? Maybe I miss a rpm with printer's drivers (not installed by default)?

Just configured a new printer, an Oki B410d and have a problem with the automatic double-sided printing:it will only print with the "long-edge flip", no matter if I mark the "short-edge" option. This is very annoying, since I have to print lots of booklets on horizontal A4 paper, and reverse pages are printed upside-down! I'm using the "OKI B4000 / B400 / MB400 PCL" driver from Okidata web page.

I want to select 3 option double-sided,layout 2up,color(grayscale)
Configuring at cups web page [url]
"Inkjet Print Filter Ver.2.70" and "3.0" is as same as "Ver 2.60" In case of using each canon drivers, can't select color option window. And there is no color option on cups page, and system-config-printer. I thought any canon official driver may be no able to apply double-sided option.

I am using Ubuntu 9.10. I have a Brother MFC 240C printer. I installed the print driver from here. Driver installed with no problem. When I print something, it goes through the print que to the the printer with no error messages, however the printer never prints the document. When I take the printer off line, Ubuntu senses it's offline and when I return the printer online Ubuntu knows it's back online. So I know Ubuntu is talking to the printer. It's just the print jobs never print. I am dual booting with Windows XP. The printer works fine when in XP.

I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 on a Sony Z series laptop which is also dual booted with MS Vista. My Brother printer (which has wi-fi) has stopped printing with Ubuntu. The Brother does still print with Vista using the wireless connection.
I've tried deleting the network printer software and reinstalling it. The installation program will locate the Brother printer and it will appear to have been installed properly. When I try to do a test print using Ubuntu, the "document print status" window will indicate the print job is pending. However, it will stay pending indefinitely. I've used the printing troubleshooter guide and it has advised that:
- The queue 'Brother-HL-4070CDW' is not enabled. The reason given is: 'Unable to locate printer 'BRWCEB885'!'.
- To enable it, select the 'Enabled' checkbox in the 'Policies' tab for the printer in the printer administration tool. To start this tool, select System->Administration->Printing from the main menu.
When I go to the policies tab and check the 'Enabled' box and then try to apply this selection, the 'Enabled' box automatically unchecks and I get a print error message:
- Printer Error. There was problem sending document 'Test Page' (job 117) to the printer.
I seem to be caught in an endless loop without anything printing.

This printer has worked fine with FC14 on my AMD x86_64 system for months using the printer drivers from the Brother Solutions Center web site (see below). I installed FC15 today from the network CD and installed the same printer drivers. Test print works fine, and just now this web page printed OK using Firefox. But when I try to print from LibreOffice Writer or Thunderbird, a message appears briefly at the bottom of my Gnome3 desktop that the job is being printed and then another message saying that printing is complete. Nothing is sent to the printer, however. In Thunderbird, the Print dialog window says the status of the MFC-240C is "No pages found!" I tried deleting the printer using System Setings -> Printers and reinstalling using system-config-printer, selecting the Brother MFC-240C, with no change.
Brother drivers:
mfc240clpr-1.0.1-1.i386.rpm
mfc240ccupswrapper-1.0.1-1.i386.rpm

I have been printing with this laser printer (connected via LAN) for months without a single glitch, when suddenly today I had to quickly print a document. I could not print it. At first I thought the printer was off, then I double checked it was on. I restarted the CUPS server, reinstalled the printer in CUPS, nothing will work. When I send a print job, (I am using XFCE btw), I see the printer icon in the tasktray and it has a small warning sign.
Opening the print queue, I see "Processing - Printer Warning". In cups, I see nothing unusual. It says (in the printer queue): processing since Sat 25 Jun 2011 10:13:30 AM EDT. I can print a test page FROM the Printer web interface, confirming the printer works. I can print with the other printers. CUPS detects the printer and does not report anything unusual. What is going on with CUPS?

I have a mfc-440cn installed and working in Debian wheezy 7.4 (the last one) but I cant fix to it for printing in grey, I was using the pdf default reader and send some pages to printing indicating not to print them in color just greys colors but doesn't respect that order, it prints full color. When I see the conf page for the printer it stills have the configuration I did indicating to print grey but it ignores it and print as it wants (full color). Note that I installed thr mfc according the instructions from the brother support page with no trouble but is just that it only wants to print full color.

I just installed Ubuntu Ultimate, and I found a theme I really liked that goes by the name "Azenis". However, I like the button arrangement on the default theme. Is there anyway to get the buttons on the left side of the screen, but still keeping the same look? I uploaded two screenshots just in case there is any confusion on the topic. (The blueish theme is Azenis, the default looking one is well, the default theme.)

I expected more from ubuntu 10.4 with regards to printing with exact size photos and with poor auto colour printing but the situation remains unchanged! for instance .. the photo size configurations for ubuntu/fspot/gimp and others are not compatible with my printers (HP and Brother) .. here in Europe a typical standard size photo (10x15inches or 150x100mm are not even on the Ubuntu listing? I have tried all listed possibilities including "custom" (which does not seem to ever work correctly?)and the result at best is photos with uneven boarders or at worse my printer goes a bit crazy with much wasted photo paper and expensive ink ...even photos selected for "no boarders" still produces photos with the self same uneven boarders.
I have tried pretty much everything over time following advice in this forum and including using HPlip and updating drivers required for my Brother printer but the root problem seemingly lies with the Ubunto photo size setup listing. Working with Ubuntu over the years I have found that it can do pretty much everything that Windows can do except for this dam ongoing photo quality and configuration problem.

I'm using 9.10 on x86 architecture. I've searched the forums and anything related to scanning talks about editing /etc/udev/rules.d/45-libsane.rules which doesn't seem to exist on my system. Judging from the dates most of these posts probably relate to intrepid or jaunty. XSane just says 'no devices available'. Printing works fine.

During installation of Ubuntu 10.04, there was no driver found for my Brother MFC-665CW printer/scanner. However, I recently learned on the Forum that there is a printer driver available for the MFC-665CW through Synaptic that can be accessed by searching on printer name. I got it, and it works great. I've not been successful in locating a driver for the scanner part of the MFC-665CW. Does anyone know if there is a driver available on Synaptic that will work for the scanner on a MFC-665CW, and if so how to get to it (i.e., what to search on to locate it)?
