OpenSUSE :: Error: Couldn't Get An RGB, Double-buffered Visual
Feb 7, 2010
Whenever I run glxgears or glxinfo from an ssh or vnc session, I get "Error: couldn't get an RGB, double-buffered visual". I can run glx stuff fine on the console under KDE, but that's not practical for the intended users. I've tried updating drivers (it's a Dell R610 w/ Matrox G200ew videa), firmware, rpms, etc., even running ssh with -X or -Y, but to no avail.
When I try to play some OpenGL games, I get this error. How can I fix this? My graphics card is Nvidia, and I use the nvidia-current driver. Here's what it says under OpenGL/GLX Information. I don't know if this is the info you need, but oh well.
I'm having an issue and I'm trying to figure out if the proprietary driver from ATI is actually getting installed correctly or if I'm on the open source driver still. ...and whether or not there's an advantage to one over the other...
I'm on a Sager NP3790 with an ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 graphics card. I've got a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10 and the basic 2d functions all seem fine, but any games I try to run with OpenGL simplt fail and "glxinfo" yields:
I have downloaded the latest legacy driver from ATI (ati-driver-installer-9-3-x86.x86_64.run) and I've not had any success running that directly. It appears to not knowingly support anything newer than Ubuntu 9.04. I have tried forcing that driver to build itself targeting 9.04 and I've tried installing the .deb packages that it produces, but with no luck there either.
If I recall this laptop's former lives, it has in the past run Eternal Lands without issue back when it was Ubuntu 8.x, but somewhere between a client update from them, some update from ATI or Ubuntu I seem to have lost my OpenGL capabilities.
I have a Slackware 13.1/64-current system running the 2.6.35.6 kernel that I have installed the most recent nvidia drivers for (as of yesterday or day before) 260.19.12. If I boot up into run level 4 after running nvidia-xconfig in a console and run glxinfo as root I get:
Quote:
bash-4.1# glxinfo name of display: :0.0 Error: couldn't find RGB GLX visual or fbconfig
If I edit /etc/profile or /home/username/.bash_profile and add the following:
Quote:
export LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=X
I have set both X=0 and X=1 as reported by [URL] I get the screen of information except it says
Quote:
direct rendering: No (LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT set)
my lspci -v for the graphics card looks like this:
05:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G86 [GeForce 8500 GT] (rev a1) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) Subsystem: XFX Pine Group Inc. Device 2353 Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 16

I am sure I missing something from my xorg.conf but at this point I am not sure what I have been searching on this for days to no avail. From the log the only thing that looks like is a problem is it doesn't load the keyboard and mouse but it gets loaded later on in the file.
I am having issues with 3d I am trying to start up a game called auteria but it displays this error "Could not find a compatible opengl display resolution. Please check your driver configuration. (Error: Couldn't find a matching GLX visual)" I am on ubuntu 10.10 could anybody give me a solution on how to fix this issue?
Distro: Ubuntu 11.04-beta1 'natty' Problem: 'your hardware does not support Unity; you will be using Ubuntu Classic.' Installed: nvidia-common 0.2.28, nvidia-current 270.30-0ubuntu3, nvidia-settings 270.29-0ubuntu1, linux-image-generic-pae 2.6.38.7.21, linux-headers-generic-pae 2.6.38.8.22

After reading a few other threads on the matter, I suspect the problem is with the 'nvidia-current' package more than the libgl1-mesa-glx or unity packages. ... though it does seem odd that Unity doesn't have a non-OpenGL verison.
If I find a solution, I'll come back. I hope the answer isn't "ditch nvidia-current for the binary install script from nVidia direct." If someone found this thread in a search, the nVidia driver install scripts can be found at [URL]
using nvidia_173 driver from repository with nvidia geforce fx5500 sping returns this: Could not set video mode: Couldn't find matching GLX visual would installing nvidia-glx-173 package be the solution? just realized i had the nvidia_173 driver activiated, but not in use. ran "sudo nvidia-xconfig" boots in tty1, so i navigated to the X11 directory and deleted xorg.conf, boots to gnome now
how do i keep it from going to tty1? i know there are threads on this here and there, but most leave you with the default driver, and i want to keep nvidia_173
My laptop's been locking up in Linux (Ubuntu, Backtrack, Puppy) periodically for a while now. When it locked up, it was always immune to the magic of SysRq, which I thought might indicate a hardware problem. It became so bad that I had to stop using the laptop.
Today, when I turned it on and tried to boot into Fedora 12, I got the following error (just once, it just locked up at various points during the splash screen after this once):
double fault: 0000 [#1] SMP last sysfs file: CPU 0 odules linked in: Pid: 1, co m: swapper Not ta nted 2.6.32.11-99.fc 2.x86_64 #VGN-T 250N RIP: 0010:[<ff
All the seemingly missing letters were really missing, not my typos.
As you can see, kernel version is 2.6.32.11-99.fc12.x86_64 and my laptop is a Sony Vaio TZ 250N (Core 2 Duo ULV 1.2GHZ). Note that with the other remaining kernels from the updates, nothing ever happened other than the locking up. The core temperatures hover pretty high, about 55-60C peak but this is still below the critical temp. Memtest came up clean when the problem first started happening.
This is an example of the error I receive when trying to do an update via YaST, YaST2, or zypper. Basically, curl is broken. With out it functioning normally, I can't use openSUSE's update mechanism to fix my system. Need to find a way to manually fix / upgrade curl. There was an error in the repository initialization.'Updates-for-openSUSE-11.4-11.4-0': [|] Valid metadata not found at specified URL(s)History:

I noticed after upgrading my Dell D820 from 11.3 x 64 to 11.4 x64 that splashy seems to crash while trying to render the theme (while hibernating). Running a splashy test returns the same error: "Splashy ERROR: Couldn't splashy_start_splashy(). Error -10". Using the default theme instead or re-installing splashy does not make any difference.
I'm having trouble installing visual python, I've downloaded the source package from [URL] as I couldn't find it on yast. On calling ./configure most tests are passed but I get an error which says I need gtkglextmm 1.2 checking in Yast I see this is already installed. Looking in the install.txt it talks about this error and suggests renaming some files, I'm not keen to do this for fear of breaking something else but as it turns out they are already named what they need to be anyway.? Now I'm truly stumped.
im using the ubuntu distro and when i goto the visual effects tab and click on normal or extra, it says "desktop effects could not be enabled" also, i have Two hdd's, a 100GB that has windows 7 and ubuntu. and a 250GB that has Windows XP. GRUB didnt notice windows xp though, so its not a boot option.
I have an HP OfficeJet 5610v installed on my system, and cups can print the test page. I can also get the test page to print via [URL] which appears to be printed under the anonymous user. Now if I attempt to print the test page via the printer control panel from windows, I get the following sets of error:

CUPS is showing that the "user" is my XP login name so I added that user to Linux and even added that account to the "lp" group and still get the above errors.

I have looked around but do not understand the complexities of rebuilding kernel etc so would need some assistance. I have checked IO_support and it is set to 0

If there are any noticeable incompatibilities here and how I could work to speed this up. I only have SSH access and could possibly get a KVM on it as it is currently locked up in a DataCenter.
create a VM here with virsh. I've managed to create the XML file and got it to work properly, however running it is the problem. These are the errors I get error: Failed to start domain Cent-OS, internal error process exited while connecting to monitor: open /dev/kvm: No such file or directory ,Could not initialize KVM, will disable KVM support qemu: could not open disk image /media/55D123D9E79ABF54/VM/Cent-OS-5.5.img: Permission denied
I have ubuntu intrepid installed in one of the amazon servers , when i try to install any software using apt-get i used to get the following error.Code: E: Couldn't find package E: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
When i install libdrm, i get the following error:checking for clock_gettime... no.checking for clock_gettime in -lrt... no.configure: error: Couldn't find clock_gettime
It seems that it cannt find clock_gettime function, but i find it as follow: $ grep clock_gettime /usr/include/time.h extern int clock_gettime (clockid_t __clock_id, struct timespec *__tp) __THROW;
I recently upgraded from 11.3 to 11.4 using the "zypper dup"-method, because I have made good experiences with that approach with my last upgrade. However I have some strange visual artifacts throughout the system now. When a button is in its pushed state, then at the left and top edge, where normally a drop-shadow would be drawn, is a white bar, as shown in the picture below. This also applies to progress-bars (for example when starting eclipse but also for all other applications)Also the systems feels slower than usual when switching between applications. Can't tell if this is important, but I have a Nvidia Quadro NVS 160M graphics card with the latest driver (version 260.19.44).
As far as I know, GNOME can't act like MS or OSX when we wan't to rename a file..you know, when you slightly re click the file name and its ready to be renamed.. instead, I should go right click - context menu - rename to do that.
First thing I do is double click the top of the window to enlarge it and when I do that the window enlarges correctly, but it also lunches an app like the double click lags behind to click on an app after the window enlages, im using the 64bit version.
If u dnt knw wat I mean please try it out and tell me how I can fix this, just double click a sized window to make it fullscreen and tell me wat happens.
I also would like to knw if maybe its the fact that im using the 64bit version and that its glitchy.
Every time I get an email, I receive a couple of notifications for that email and the notification sound plays twice as well. If I disable the notifications for gmail plasmoid, I don't get any notifications at all - which means that the double notifications are really triggered by gmail plasmoid.
i get the following error when i try to install autoten: root@Tex dan]# rpm -Uvh [URL]... curl: (6) Couldn't resolve host 'dnmouse.org' error: skipping [URL]... - transfer failed from reading other posts, it sounds like a dns error, but i don't know what to do to fix it.
My software sources some how got screwed up. Now when I try to install from software manager or Synaptic, I get error messages. Here is the error messages at the bottom of "sudo apt-get update" :

I use Ubuntu 9.04. Synaptic Software Manager > Repositories > Reload. I have a following error.
GPG error: [URL]... karmic Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 7804AF9D95075E6E. What can I do?
