OpenSUSE :: GNOME 3 Fails To Work After Update
May 11, 2011
I have updated GNOME 3 and it no longer works. Having suspected extensions the problem I have manually uninstalled all extensions via command line. This got me to log in instead of the problem screen. However, the desktop is entirely unresponsive, after log in it no longer responds to anything, although the mouse still tracks.

I am running MozillaThunderbird-3.0.9-0.3.1 under gnome-desktop-2.24.1-2.18.1 on OpenSUSE 11.1. Up to about a month or so ago, I was using the latest version of Thunderbird 2.x, but an OpenSUSE update updated it to Thuderbird 3.0.9 and I've had troubles ever since.
Just to make sure that it wasn't a problem related to any plugins, I disabled all the plugins I was using, but the problem still persists. The problem I have is as soon as I reply to any message in any of my Inboxes, I can no longer view any other message--read or unread, in either the main view window or in a separate tab. This behavior is repeatable with about 90% consistency.
My speculation is that the is some strange interaction going on between Thunderbird and something else. It's hard for me to believe that this is the way that Thunderbird behaves on all operating systems as I'm sure the Thunderbird developers would have fixed it and most likely if would have been picked up by the OpenSUSE team. But hey, I could be wrong.
I'm not even sure if this is the right place to report this. But it's very annoying as the only way I've found to correct it is to restart Thunderbird.Anyhow, I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this or heard about behavior like this. If so, what did you do to resolve it?
P.S.- I tried to search this site but found too many hits for "thunderbird 3" to be useful.

I've installed the GNOME Update Manager (0.68-debian.7) from the official Debian package archive. However, after checking for new packages and clicking "Install the updates", the update manager asks for rights and then just checks for new updates again. Selecting different packages didn't help either, it just checks for updates again and doesn't update anything. Has anyone experienced the same problem

Since updating a few days ago I cannot start dolphin, digikam and a lot of other KDE apps any more. The error message from Dolphin is
Code:

The versions are openSUSE 11.3 (64-bit) and KDE 4.6.

I've installed KDE 4.6.2 (from Index of /repositories/KDE:/Release:/46/openSUSE_11.4) and I've noticed that Strigi fails to work. In my System Settings I have?message that Strigi haven't started, although it should (the checkbox to strart Srtigi is active). The process virtuoso-t is constantly suspended in the system.
OS: OpenSuse 11.4 64 bit. Some bugs are resolved in KDE 4.6.2 compared to 4.6.00, so I would like to stay with KDE 4.6.2.

Cannot find input plugin for MRL [dvd:/] Is now the message that I get when attempting to play DVDs in Kaffeine, which worked very well in SuSe 10,3 three hours ago. Ironically, VLC now works a treat, when upgrading that in 10.3 killed it.Xine doesn't want to work (restricted format), and Kaffeine isn't playing any files either. Has something been dropped from my previous setup, or do I have an inadequate installation? I'm not very command line oriented I'm afraid;I just expect things to work as they did before...:-)

Recently I updated my openSUSE 11.2 and I'm not too sure what all were the recent updates but I suspect networkmanager also got updated. After I restarted my machine, my laptop fails to connect to the wireless access point. I tried both in gnome as well as KDE but the same error. This is the log I found in my /var/log/NetworkManager which I believe should give some pointers.
Code:
Jul 8 15:08:42 AshSuse1520 NetworkManager: <info> Activation (wlan0) starting connection 'Buckeye Plaza'
Jul 8 15:08:42 AshSuse1520 NetworkManager: <info> (wlan0): device state change: 3 -> 4 (reason 0)
Jul 8 15:08:42 AshSuse1520 NetworkManager: <info> Activation (wlan0) Stage 1 of 5 (Device Prepare) scheduled...
[Code]....
I did a search of this error in google and all I got were few results which complained about bugs in some debian distro.
My wireless card works fine and so does the access point I try to connect to since my Ubuntu installation is able to connect fine as well as my windows Xp.

I got a workstation with openSuse 10.3 pre-installed. After I did the Online Update from YaST2 and rebooted the machine as requested by YaST2, the system came to fail starting up an X session.
Below are excerpts of the message appeared on the screen at the end of the boot process. (I transcripted it from the screen by hand.)
Code:
Waiting for mandatory devices: eth1 __NSC__
10 9 8 7 5 4 3 2 1
eth1 devices: Intel Corporation 82573L Gigabit Ethernet Controller
eth1 DHCP4 client (dhcpcd) is running
[Code].....
what is causing the failure of the X session and how to fix the problem? I would be glad if you give me any hints or pointers.

I am trying to update Flash-player and yast2-core as prompted by today's update icon.
I am now faced with a loop that goes like this:
1) click on icon
2) window pops up, "2 packages selected"
3) click on apply, subwindow pops up
4) click on continue, "waiting for authentication"
5) after minutes of waiting, click on cancel, nothing happens
6) click on icon killing subwindow
7) now back to 2)
Aborting the process, starting at 1) again, same mess
Conclusions:
a) No idea what was going on
b) Use Yast instead of clicking update icon

OpenSUSE is starting to drive me a bit nuts. Actually what I'm trying to do is simply install VMWare server on a recent as possible SUSE and run 2 virtual machines, both the same SUSE. Of course 11.2 32 bit doesn't run VMWare server 2 so it's back to 11.1. The trouble is, 11.1 won't install properly on my PC.
The install process, booted and installed from the 11.1 network install iso image on CD, runs fine. The PC reboots from hard disk and stops at the grub prompt. I've tried the auto-repair option and reinstalled it from scratch a second time always with the same results. It seems the root partition is hosed, and that's where my understanding hits its limits. Can anyone help?
Incidentally should anyone be able to advise on the VMWare conundrum I'd also be interested. Maybe in another thread...

since the last SuSE online update (last Wednesday?) the X server no longer starts on our notebook (ATI HD 4200) so we only have the consoles available, which limits the WAF heavily . We were using SuSE 11.3 with the Gnome desktop for about one months and it worked smoothly, but since the update (which included a kernel update to 2.6.34.7-0.7) the X server tries to start 5 times and then gives up. All logfiles end with:
Code:
...
[ 13.899] Segmentation fault at address 0x3c
[ 13.899]
Fatal server error:
[Code]....
I used the ati driver ati-fglrxG02-kmp-desktop, version 8.762_k2.6.34.0_12-31.1 from the ATI Suse repository. To solve the problem I already switched to the Xorg driver which lead to a color distorted display but no segmentation fault. But I'd like to get the ati driver running again.

My openSUSE 11.4 adventure continues apace, and is brilliant! However, recently the Gnome 3 Software Updater has begun to show me an update I cannot get and actually I don't think I need. It doesn't turn up when updating via YAST, which is fine, but sometimes the Software Updater is a handy thing, and I don't know why this should appear.
The update is xorg-X11-server - Mesa 4546 noarch. This seems to be for Radeon and RadeonHD cards, of which as an Nvidia user I have neither. Like I say when using YAST there's no sign of it, but it just turns up in the Gnome 3 Software Updater every day. If I try to install it it tells me there are failed dependency resolutions and it doesn't install it. Is there anything I can do to remove this unwanted update from the Gnome 3 updater?

I have a minor problem with my "Update Applet 2.28.0" in Gnome. It occurs when I want to make the applet do one or more suggested update(s). It always asks me for the password of superuser/root: "Authenticate : Authentication is required to update packages. [...]". I think under my installation before (11.1 maybe updated from an older version) I could tell the automatic/semi automatic updater to remember the su password (in YaST or in the authentication dialog?).
In the help manual on my computer (and in the internet) there is the possibility to make the updater remember the password via policy kit: ("Access to all privileged operations is controlled via PolicyKit." See: GNOME Documentation Library : gnome-packagekit Manual : Introduction) I could not find any policy kid or any other possibility to give to the automatic updater (or its user) that privilege permanently (=to remember authorization). I think on a system with more (real) users this could be a real problem (not just an inconvenience).

I am trying to update using Update Manager and I get this message: Failed to fetch "Failed to fetch [URL]..404 Not Found" My system is 64 days out of date now.
I have looked elsewhere for an answer and some others have had similar problems, but I have not found a reason for it happening, nor an answer. I wonder if anyone can help me please. I have been using Ubuntu for several months, can use the Terminal if I have the right commands to issue, but beyond that have limited knowledge of the system.

I add a "command line" or "mini-commander" applet to the panel in gnome, but nothing happens.
If I launch "/usr/lib/mini_commander_applet" on a terminal, I get a dozen such applets, for all the times I tried, but then I have an xterm tied up.
If I launch the same from "alt-f2" it does not work, and gives no error.

I have bought a generic gamepad from China quite a while ago, which worked well on Windows XP (it's HID-compliant). However, after finally being able to switch back to OpenSuSE, I now find that I can't get it to work.
I am currently running OpenSuSE 11.3, with GNOME. I've used the "modprobe joydev" command, and if I run lsusb, I get the following:
Code:
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 004: ID eb1a:2571 eMPIA Technology, Inc.
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 058f:6362 Alcor Micro Corp. Hi-Speed 21-in-1 Flash Card Reader/Writer (Internal/External)
Bus 001 Device 006: ID 0c0b:b136 Dura Micro, Inc. (Acomdata)
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 002 Device 002: ID e0ff:0002
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 06a3:8021 Saitek PLC Eclipse II Keyboard
Bus 002 Device 004: ID 0079:0006 DragonRise Inc. Generic USB Joystick
The last one is my gamepad, and it's apparently pretty well-known. I have also tried the "cat /dev/input/js1" trick, and it does indeed show garbage when I press buttons or move the analog sticks, so in fact it should be functioning properly. However, I can't get it work. In Tux Racer it simply doesn't recognize any joystick/gamepad, and Racer (the simulator) tells me that 0 joysticks have been found.
I have been searching for a solution for quite a while now, but all topics seem to be outdated (older OpenSuSE versions, listing commands that don't exist and are nowhere to be found...)
how to get this gamepad to work? Even if it means without the analog sticks, if it at least works a bit (I'll just do without the vibration, which is apparently very hard to get to work under Linux).
