Ubuntu :: Gnome Shell Alt-tab Menu Doesn't Work?

May 14, 2011

I'm trying out gnome-shell right now and for some reason, when I use the alt-tab shortcut, it switches to the next window and then the menu immediately disappears, so I have no ability to look at the detailed menu option. This might have something to do with me having changed a lot of my keyboard shortcuts in regular gnome. For example, I use super-tab rather than mod4-tab. Also, my key to call up the shell is caps lock because my other two super keys (super and right control) are all assigned to various keyboard shortcuts.

Ubuntu Installation :: Gnome Shell Replace Doesn't Work - No Application Launcher In Upper Left Hand Corner

Mar 4, 2010

So, supposedly Gnome Shell is available through synaptic. I just downloaded and installed it and then ran gnome-shell --replace. It doesn't work at all. I hit the windows key and get nothing and there is no application launcher in the upper left hand corner and Alt-f2 produces nothing at all. Alt-tab gives me the option of choosing the windows that were running when I ran gnome-shell --replace but nothing else works at all. Just a vast expanse of digital nothingness. Does anyone know why this might be? I have an nvidia video card (see sig below) and two monitors running from "twin view".

OpenSUSE :: GNOME-Shell Refuses To Work After Full Reinstall

May 13, 2011

I have recently been pulling my hair out with Gnome-Shell. I had Gnome3 including the shell up and running as soon as it was ready in the stable repos. However it recently refused to work after the update to 3.0.1 hit the stable repository. Today I did a complete reinstall of OpenSUSE 11.4 from the gnome desktop CD, NVIDIA drivers are correctly installed and working. Gnome3 has been installed via the one-click method on top of this FRESH install. Yet still my gnome-shell freezes after login, I am running in fallback mode now. Really cannot see what can have gone wrong this time, nothing out of the ordinary has been knowingly installed at all. I'd really love to get my desktop up and running to how it used to be.

Selecting different packages didn't help either, it just checks for updates again and doesn't update anything. Has anyone experienced the same problem

Fedora :: Nautilus Doesn't Work After Switching From KDE To GNOME

Jan 20, 2010

I recently switched my desktop environment from KDE-4.3.4 to GNOME-2.28-2 and I did that by installing most of the gnome-packages and uninstalling pretty much all of the kde-ones. After reboot everything worked fine except the file browser that doesn't seem to care about my feelings. It launches and when I try to kill the process the status changes from sleeping to uninterruptible and then back to sleeping. The only way is to reboot but that isn't a solution.Error while sending message: Did not receive a reply. Ubuntu :: Gnome Do Rhythmbox Plugin Doesn't Work

Dec 28, 2010

So I've been using Rhythmbox and Gnome Do for quite some time now, and this problem has persisted for about as long

So I've got the Rhythmbox plugin enabled in Gnome Do. Awesome. I can invoke Gnome Do (Super + Space on my system) and start typing up some music I want to hear. This morning I wanted to listen to Buck 65's album Vertex. So I start typing "Buck 65" and the artist is listed in Gnome Do as expected.

I hit the right arrow to see a listing of his albums. I arrow down to Vertex and press Enter. What I expect is that Rhythmbox will start playing that album. However, there is simply no effect. This occurs at all levels of music browsing with Gnome Do. I can select an artist, album, or specific song, and no matter what I select, Rhythmbox doesn't respond at all. This is true if Rhythmbox is already running or not, whether it's already playing music or not. There's just no effect.

In short, Gnome Do correctly sees Rhythmbox's index of my music, and I can traverse the artists, etc with it just fine, but it will not actually make Rhythmbox play that music.

That said, other functions of the Rhythmbox plugin work fine. I can pause and play music just fine using Gnome Do.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Wpa/wpe Doesn't Work On KDE But Works On Gnome

Mar 22, 2010

I've recently installed KDE 4.4.1 just to try on a Dell 1545 laptop with Ubuntu 9.10 previously installed.

My problem is that the wireless connection works just perfectly with nm-applet under Gnome, but when I login on KDE and ask KNetworkManager to connect to the same network as before, it can't finish the connection.

When I choose the connection the program asks for my passphrase, I type it and then it just sticks on "activating network" and nothing happens.

My experience with KDE is zero, so I don't even know where to start looking. I'd even tried to kill KNetworkManager and try to replace it with nm-applet, but I think there's a daemon that restarts it immediately.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Ipod Touch Doesn't Work Outside Of Gnome?

Oct 15, 2010

I recently upgraded to kubuntu 10.10 and now I can't play songs and sync my ipod outside of gnome. Before the upgrade I was able to access the ipod using rhythm box, it wouldn't be detected at first but if I would click music and then import folder and then click ipod touch under places rhythm box would recognise it and it would be mounted at /home/linux/.gvfs/iPod touch. But now unlike before on kubuntu 10.04, when I plug in my ipod it is actually recognised by the device notifier, but it only recognises it as a camera it has no access to the rest of the file system where the music is located, and their is no eject button in the device notifier to unmount. And because of this I can't mount gvfs unless I unplug the ipod, logout, and log back in into gnome. I tried mounting with ifuse before on 10.04 but it didn't work right, now when i try it in kde I get a whole new error message.

linux@linux:~$ ifuse /mnt/ipod/

No device found, is it connected? If it is make sure that your user has permissions to access the raw usb device. If you're still having issues try unplugging the device and reconnecting it.

I tried

umount camera:/Apple iPod Touch (PTP mode)@usb:001,005/

But that just gave me

bash: syntax error near unexpected token `('

I didn't think that command would work but I tried it because I have no idea where the hell the ipod is mounted or if it's even mounted at all. Is their any way to keep kde from detecting my ipod touch? Or anything I can do in the terminal so I can use my ipod with gtkpod or rhythmbox while in kde.

Ubuntu :: The Gnome Main Menu Arrow Doesn't Work

Jan 7, 2011

I've just read this thread: [URL] and the information it seems is a bit out of date and a risk to use. I felt more comfortable with the .gtkrc-2.0 file suggested a few posts in, but it doesn't work, in that it turns the panel to the Raleigh-themed one which we always get when there's some kind of error in a gtkrc file, as those of us that have dabbled in theming will know.

It's comical that this minor but unnecessary eyesore goes back so far and hasn't been dealt with, but is there any new info about this, a new method, for 10.10? I don't want to be doing compiling or to risk messing things up, as has been caused by the directions in the other thread, because I've been experimenting with different distros for two years, just bought a new hard drive, and have settled now.

Maybe someone here knows why the .gtkrc-2.0 file hasn't worked for me? I twigged that the panel (though not the rest of the theme, i.e. in program windows) had turned to Raleigh because of those ugly handles pertaining to the Window List panel applet and the one to the left of the notification area. I used the exact file in that other thread, I tried logging out and in and then rebooting, and I even tried pasting the file's contents into the gtkrc file of the theme I use. If you need to know, I'm using the 'Lush' Metacity window border and the 'Redmond' engine.

Ubuntu :: Gnome ALSA Mixer - Sound Doesn't Work

Mar 20, 2011

I am experiencing problems with the Gnome ALSA Mixer. I installed Ubuntu on my MacBook Pro inside Windows (I am running Windows via bootcamp), and when I am running Ubuntu the sound doesn't work. After researching the problem online, I was told that one needed to download an application called the "Gnome ALSA Mixer", and switch the mute to off (apparently the mute is default). I downloaded the application, but whenever I try to run it the application window is blank. There are no controls of any sort. I was told when installing Ubuntu inside windows that the disk efficiency (I think thats what is was) is very much reduced, but I don't know if this has anything to do with that.

Also, is there a way to prevent the trackpad from registering stimulus while typing? I find it very obnoxious that every time I try to type in my password or the like that the curser clicks off of where I'm typing, so I am constantly having to move the pointer back and re-click in the area I'm trying to type in (if that makes sense).

OpenSUSE :: Gnome Terminal: How To Get The Bash Shell

Mar 17, 2010

i've finally got a NIX environment...yipee! Installed opensuse 11.2 in a dual boot with windoze with no problem whatsoever. unfortunately, my NIX skills are sadly dated or maybe things have changed or both. in any case, i have a rather trivial problem that i have not been able to figure out.

i go to gnome terminal to get to the bash shell, no problem except when i do things like cat, less and so on. the commands do what they do then when done the last line output is "some text" and "(END)" - at the completion of the command it does not return to the bash shell. i've tried ctrl-everything, enter, escape, actually all keystrokes i can think of to get back to the bash shell...no luck. man and docs have not been helpful or i simply missed the answer (i'm a little saturated at this point).the only thing i've been able to do to solve my dilema is close the terminal an start a new instance, not elegant but works.

OpenSUSE :: Shell Extensions Crashing Gnome 3

Jun 2, 2011

GNOME 3 issues, I got everything figured out and was trying to get some extensions installed. I successfully installed the alternative shutdown menu and the applications menu. I tried to install alternate-tab and user-theme and they both caused gnome3 to boot into IceWM...I removed all the folders from /usr/share/gnome-shell/extensions and home/<user>/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions and it fixed it. I read somewhere about them being outdated if a GNOME 3 update was released.

The two extensions I did install were from New GNOME Shell Extensions That Provide A GNOME2-Like User Experience ~ Web Upd8: Ubuntu / Linux blog and not the GNOME 3 website. The extensions that crashed GNOME were from all over, INCLUDING the GNOME website. I'd like to get the system monitor and a weather applet in the panel and the alternate-tab and change themes but I can't find any that work. [URL]. I tried to use the themeselector extension from here and I think another one or two, however, they were also a few that crashed my GNOME...

OpenSUSE :: Gnome 3 - Shell Will Not Repaint After Login

Jul 12, 2011

I've been having some problems and was trying to diagnose them. My graphics were going wonky at the BIOS stage (spots, letters changing colour, and even the very first screen of nVidia details swapping "version" for "versikn") so I went to try a new graphics card. Not long before I got my new graphics card, Gnome 3 really started playing up and did the "oops, a problem occurred" at every login. I created a new account and got the same behaviour. I swapped my GeForce 7950 out for a GeForce 7300 that I scrounged up. The spots and changing letters disappeared, so I knew that at least part of the issue was the graphics and not something else (e.g. motherboard or memory). I still got the "Ooops" screen, so I knew that wasn't caused by a bad response from the graphics card or anything.

I've since nuked the install (which started out as 11.4 RC1 with GNOME3:STABLE) and re-installed from a new download of the 11.4 DVD plus GNOME3:STABLE (in accordance with these instructions) with all of the updates. I can now log in without the "Ooops", but if I am using the proprietary nVidia drivers then the display won't repaint after a few seconds (long enough for Gnome Do to appear, but not long long enough for me to do anything else) - clicking on Activities or on the menu in the top-right doesn't seem to do anything. If I Ctrl+Alt+F1 then Ctrl+Alt+F7 to skip to a terminal and back then the cursor is still there, but the screen is blank.

If I swap to the Nouveau drivers then I can log in to Gnome Shell and it continues to render, but even simple things like dialogs folding down from the top of their parent window can grind along and take a few seconds to finish painting. That is on the 7300 rather than the 7950, but I haven't swapped the cards back as I'm still suspicious of how healthy the 7950 is. I've not seen anything that appears relevant in the XOrg log, but given that X will reboot and isn't completely hung then it could be a repaint bug more than an error. I've tried all of this with clean accounts with the same results, so it wouldn't seem to be any of the standard .gconf/.dconf etc folders.

OpenSUSE Install :: Configure Gnome 3 Shell In 11.3?

Feb 22, 2011

I've just installed the latest OpenSUSE 11.3 Gnome 3 Reload [and in so doing, by the way, replaced two other oses one advertised as something else but turned out to be what I regard as a poor imitatian of OpenSUSE 11.3 (and to add insult to injury it even identified itself as OpenSUSE 11.3 after install!) and the other a Linux distro more popular than OpenSUSE but failing to deliver a working Gnome 3 shell].

Which brings me to the subject at hand: Gnome 3 shell. I'm presently using the Gnome 3 panel (which I got after having to select the failsafe option after rebooting). OpenSUSE's Gnome 3 shell display is all jumbled up to the point of being unusable. Although I couldn't make out any legible print in the terminal (most of the Applications icons are recogniseable if rather tattered-looking), I had hoped I could still type in su>enter>password>enter>nvidia-xconfig>enter.

What do I do now to get a screenshot-like Gnome 3 shell display? I realize that this computer is rather resource-shabby, but I figure that if it'll run MintMenu, it should be able to run any other Gnome shell.

Fedora :: Gnome Timed Login Doesn't Work On Fresh 13 Install?

Jul 28, 2010

I just installed Fedora 13 on a new computer and the timed login for gnome does not work unless you manually select it. This surprised me as I upgraded a separate computer to Fedora 13 and the timed login feature still correctly functions and does not require user interaction.

Code:
[daemon]
TimedLoginEnable=true
TimedLogin=<username>
TimedLoginDelay=3

Adding the above to /etc/gdm/custom.conf only adds an Automatic Login option that you have to manually select and then the computer will login. I would deem this less than useful.

Code:
[daemon]
AutomaticLoginEnable=true
AutomaticLogin=<username>

I know you can substitute the timed login with the automatic login and it will instantly login, but this provides no option to select another user. I have been unable to find any information why this feature no longer works and wanted to know if there is a new way or if anyone knows why the timed login feature was crippled.

OpenSUSE :: Gnome Shell Extensions Available In Stable Repository

Apr 29, 2011

The gnome-shell-extensions have been accepted into the stable repository and should appear soon along with an updated gnome-shell. Now, if you installed the extensions for my factory branch whilst I was working on the extensions, you need to remove the repository and remove the installed packages as there have been some name changes to the extensions. I don't recommend the xrandr extension, it will crash the shell! If you do try it, you only need to do a ctrl+alt+F1 and login as root user and zypper rm, logout and ctrl+alt+F7 and login.
