View 1 RepliesI ran an update after installing the OpenSuse 11.2 Gnome Live CD and could not start Gnome.Signing in would only get me a blank screen with wallpaper.Changing the display manager in /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager to kdm (from the default gdm) resolves this issue for me:DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm"

View 1 Replies View RelatedThings were running fine until GNOME misbehaved;
GNOME failed to load telling me:
Install error, Configuration defaults for GNOME power manager have not been installed correctly.
So I
Code:
To the shell and check the logs in gdm and find this:
Could not ask power manager if user can suspend, launch helper exited with unknown return code 0.
So I try
Code:
To see if another user will get the desktop; I get the error
Cant create etc/passwd no space left on device.
So I
Code:
And get the following
I insert a usb drive to prepare for back up; Run
Code:
On the shell to get the usb device name; Then run
Code:
To mount the device.
I end up with:
Cant create lock file /etc/mtab~ 4610 No space left on device(use -n flag to override)
So, I
Code:
And see 9 partitionitions
Code:
Again to check which ones are loaded at boot up time and get
plus some other file systems mounted at boot up, but not mapping to any physical partitionition.
I try
Code:
On partition9 and get warnings because its mounted, so I chicken out and try
Code:
And run into the error:
cant create lock file /etc/mtab~4832 no space left on device (use -n flag to override)
Good thing is there is a
Code:
Since space is a problem, I
Code:
On partition6 which is not mounted at boot up time and try to
Code:
I still get the error
cant create lock file /etc/mtab~4735 no space left on device (use -n flag to override
Code:
For package update tells me
cant open /var/run/zypp.pid in mode w
Code:
For power management tells me its not even recognised as a command.
i am a new opensuse user from vietnam. I installed opensuse 11.3 last week, and i have a serious problem with repo. I can't enter it . It's mean i can't update (by update applet), install codec, new software, .

View 9 Replies View Relatedsince the last SuSE online update (last Wednesday?) the X server no longer starts on our notebook (ATI HD 4200) so we only have the consoles available, which limits the WAF heavily . We were using SuSE 11.3 with the Gnome desktop for about one months and it worked smoothly, but since the update (which included a kernel update to 2.6.34.7-0.7) the X server tries to start 5 times and then gives up. All logfiles end with:
Code:

I used the ati driver ati-fglrxG02-kmp-desktop, version 8.762_k2.6.34.0_12-31.1 from the ATI Suse repository. To solve the problem I already switched to the Xorg driver which lead to a color distorted display but no segmentation fault. But I'd like to get the ati driver running again.
I have updated GNOME 3 and it no longer works. Having suspected extensions the problem I have manually uninstalled all extensions via command line. This got me to log in instead of the problem screen. However, the desktop is entirely unresponsive, after log in it no longer responds to anything, although the mouse still tracks.
View 9 Replies View RelatedFor some reason is not updating. Not sure why, Use KDE for most everything, but have some GTK apps installed. Not sure where to look to get past this error message. I've checked in yast and all the updates are there. did a rpm --rebuilddb, but this hasnt resolved the issue.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy openSUSE 11.4 adventure continues apace, and is brilliant! However, recently the Gnome 3 Software Updater has begun to show me an update I cannot get and actually I don't think I need. It doesn't turn up when updating via YAST, which is fine, but sometimes the Software Updater is a handy thing, and I don't know why this should appear.
The update is xorg-X11-server - Mesa 4546 noarch. This seems to be for Radeon and RadeonHD cards, of which as an Nvidia user I have neither. Like I say when using YAST there's no sign of it, but it just turns up in the Gnome 3 Software Updater every day. If I try to install it it tells me there are failed dependency resolutions and it doesn't install it. Is there anything I can do to remove this unwanted update from the Gnome 3 updater?
when I launch Yast2 - Online Update, I get an error during the repository refresh that it could refresh the repository.Since it's easier to copy-paste - here is the output from 'zypper ref' with the same error:

I have a minor problem with my "Update Applet 2.28.0" in Gnome. It occurs when I want to make the applet do one or more suggested update(s). It always asks me for the password of superuser/root: "Authenticate : Authentication is required to update packages. [...]". I think under my installation before (11.1 maybe updated from an older version) I could tell the automatic/semi automatic updater to remember the su password (in YaST or in the authentication dialog?).
In the help manual on my computer (and in the internet) there is the possibility to make the updater remember the password via policy kit: ("Access to all privileged operations is controlled via PolicyKit." See: GNOME Documentation Library : gnome-packagekit Manual : Introduction) I could not find any policy kid or any other possibility to give to the automatic updater (or its user) that privilege permanently (=to remember authorization). I think on a system with more (real) users this could be a real problem (not just an inconvenience).
Tried to install Gnome after the minimal server (console based) install.I would like to install a graphical GUI now What to do? wich packages? tried zypper gnome-desktop (or something similar) but it wasn't enough.

I currently have Windows XP running on this laptop, but it's very slow.I downloaded openSUSE-11.3-GNOME-LiveCD-i686.iso and sucessfully burned it to a CD.I have the laptop bios set to boot from CD, and it appears to be doing that no problem. When it boots I first see the welcome screen, then the openSUSE Installer, whether I select the Live (GNOME) option, or the Installation.. it loads the kernel, and then loads the KIWI boot systemit is on the third event, waiting for CD/DVD dvices to appear... that something seems to fail... I've just installed 11.4 and then updated to gnome 3. I've noticed that Nautilus doesn't appear to mount my windows NTFS partition. I find this odd because both Ubuntu and Fedora detect and mount it just fine in Gnome 3 (I've been trying all 3 this week).

View 1 Replies View Relatedhow to update my system online (for example my firefox 3.0 to 3.5) but i can't figure out how this possibly works. I tried the "online update" using Yast2 but apparently (according to Yast) there is nothing at all to be patched on my system. I tried to click on the Firefox-3.5.5 rpm in the repository web-interface and open it using "install software" but the process aborts because of unresolved dependencies. Is there an easy way to update software without having to download/install every dependency manually?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have just visited this page here, Updating openSUSE - openSUSE I have been trying to update my OpenSuSE system for a week now and I have absolutely no idea what causes this problem. The update would start but would stop right in the middle and refuse to install some pulseaudio(...) package... It would indicate that network is down while I am sure it is up.
I am behind a proxy and I have again and again made sure that the proxy settings are correct and alright. Since it downloads some of the packages in the start I believe my connection and settings are OK. Maybe the SuSE server is down, but not for a whole week, I don't think so. I would also like to mention that I have only tried updating through YaST GUI and I am, as of yet, unaware of any console or command-line methods of updating.
I really would like to update my system because I happen to be paranoid in matters of computer security. (Just kidding) But since I cannot install any updates it should mean I might have problem installing new software. So my digital life is literally crippled because of this problem.
I had my motherboard fail and had to do a replacement. The motherboard I got has a feature (I don't think I can shut off) that lets you select what drive you want to boot off of. I have XP installed on the first drive and openSUSE 11.1 on the second drive. I am running openSUSE 11.2 with KDE 3.5 and I simply dropped my drives onto this new motherboard. I can boot up (Linux) just fine but am having other issues with my mouse. I am thinking of Updating to openSUSE 11.2 and the current KDE version.
Should I just update to 11.2 or do a new install. I have LOTS of data in my home directory I really don't want to lose and have a partition for data as well that is pretty full. I don't want to lose this stuff. What should I do about Grub with this BIOS that lets you pick which drive to boot off of? Put Grub in the MBR of the drive with openSUSE on it and nuke the MBR of the XP drive?
I am looking to update from 11.1 to 11.3. My question is would it be better to update my current setup, or do a fresh install of 11.3? I was never able to get 11.2 to install no matter what I tried so I gave up on it and went back to my tried and true 11.1. What is the best way for me to get 11.3 on my computer?
