Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Install, Screen Refresh Loop?

Mar 26, 2011

I just installed 10.04, it boots fine and gets to the desktop. I can navigate with my keyboard fine. but when i move the mouse around. after a few minutes the screen goes black leaving just the cursor. I can move the cursor around the black screen. then the screen resets like i did an auto adjust on the monitor and the black screen with the cursor comes back up. once again I can move the mouse. Then It "refreshes" again. Stays in this loop until I restart it. But nothing changes. I have re-installed twice.

OpenSUSE Install :: Refresh Rate An Screen Resolution Not Correctly Adjusted

Jan 31, 2010

Some month ago I installed openSUSE 11.1. It worked not bad, but I wanted to get the newes release of Firefox. So I did an upgrade to 11.2. Yast2 refused to work with an error message: unknown option -s (or similar). The regular updates didn't work also. Then I decided to do a new installation. Now I'm having a new problem: Display settings (Anzeige-Einstellungen) reports: Monitor unknown (Monitor unbekannt).

Possible resolution settings are: 800 x 600; 640 x 480; 400 x 300; 320 x 240;
Possible refresh rates are: 60 Hz or 56 Hz @ 800 x 600
I need 1024 x 768 @ 76 Hz. In the previous installation it worked well. How I can teach openSUSE to run 1024 x 768 @ 76 Hz?

YAST2 Hardware information shows me in Monitor > Monitor > Resources > Resolution: High: 768; Vertical frequency: 76; Wide: 1024
The VGA controller is also correct shown in Display > 3d Blaster Savage 4

Ubuntu Installation :: Screen Shell Goes Into An Infinite Loop After Upgrading To 10.10?

I have just upgraded from 10.4 to 10.10 (x64), and now when I run gnu screen the new shell session goes into an infinite loop displaying:

repeatedly until I hit CTRL-C and break out of screen. I tried tmux and that did the same thing, so it is a problem with the shell initialisation rather than with the screen program. However I can start bash, zsh or sh directly in a terminal with no problem.

Ubuntu :: Changing Refresh Rate - Screen Too Flickery

Apr 18, 2010

I have installed Xubuntu 9.10 on an old computer.

The screen resolution defaulted to 1024 x 768 with a refresh rate of 60hz.

As this made the screen too flickery I changed the refresh rate to 87hz.

This improved the ficker but had some side effects. Firstly the computer now 'thinks' that my monitor is bigger than it really is. For example a maximised application is now off the screen. I have to manually resize the applications to fit the screen. The virtual desktop in the bottom right hand corner is now off the screen, as is the clock on the top right hand corner.

The other side effect is that I now have problems logging on to my computer. It now takes several attempts to log onto my computer.

Ubuntu :: Cannot Set Default Resolution And Refresh Rate Of Screen

I can't select default refreshing rate and resolution of my screen. Believe me, 50 Hz hurts eyes and causes headache. Ubuntu doesn't recognize my screen I used to work on 1280x1024 resolution with 80 Hz refreshing rate. 1152x864 60Hz is max I can select in Nvidia X Server and Ubuntu Screen Properties. I have tried changing options in Nvidia X Server, Ubuntu Screen Properties and tried xrandr commands (these ended with xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default. or Can't open display).

Ubuntu Networking :: Mouse And Keyboard Working But Screen Does Not Refresh

Feb 14, 2010

First I tried VNC. Easy install through Ubuntu GUI, but I could only see a still picture of the Ubuntu-desktop that wouldn't update. I could see on the Ubuntu monitor that the cursor was moving and the keyboard did work, but on my Windows computer, the screen didn't refresh. Then I read a bit on the forums and people seemed content with nomachine NX or freenx. After a bit of hazzle I finally managed to get a connection between my Windows and Ubuntu-machine. But the same thing happened here. I get to see a still picture of the Ubuntu desktop, mouse and keyboard working, but the screen doesn't refresh..!

The symptom is that when I scroll down through the browser page, the content become gibberish and unreadable. I have to do a refresh to read that content.

I did some searching on the Internet and found that it may be able to fix by updating driver, but i have no idea what and how to do it. can someone suggest a solution? can i use yum?

Ubuntu :: Natty Screen Tearing / Incorrect Monitor Refresh Rate

May 3, 2011

I'm currently running an up-to-date copy of Ubuntu 11.04, but I'm noticing some strange behavior with the monitor settings. First of all, I started investigating this because I'm seeing a lot of screen tearing while watching videos full screen as well as while the screensaver (lattice) is running. On Ubuntu 10.10 I was able to simply set the refresh rate of my monitor to 60Hz through the Nvidia tool and everything worked great. Now, this is no longer the case. I'm using a Samsung Syncmaster 205BW monitor with an Nvidia 8600 GT video card. They are connected with a DVI cable. The strange thing is, the default tool, Monitors, claims my monitor is "unknown" and will only allow me to select 50Hz, 51Hz, and sometimes 52Hz for the refresh rate.

The Nvidia tool claims that my monitor has been detected as a Samsung Syncmaster and is configured to run at 60Hz.However, another area of the Nvidia tool claims that my monitor is using a refresh rate of 59.95Hz. none of these solutions had any effect. I'm still seeing video tearing. I let the Nvidia tool re-write my xorg.conf file after trying these solutions.

Fedora :: Screen Refresh Rate 85hz Max With NVidia Card

Nov 9, 2010

I am having trouble setting my refresh rate higher than 85 hz. Any Way to get it to 100 hz?

Tried so far:
- a lot of googling
- added a modeline to xorg.conf
- reinstalled nvidia driver
- tried the screen on a windows desktop, this worked so the monitor is fine

Specs:
onitor: Iiyama Vision master pro 510 (should be capable of doing 104 hz at 1600 x 1200, max resolution 2048 x 1536)
graphics card: Geforce 9800gt
motherboard: p5ql-e
Os: Fedora 13

The modeline I tried, tried it both in screen section as well as in a seperate "Modes" section:
Code:
Modeline "1600x1200_100.00" 280.64 1600 1728 1904 2208 1200 1201 1204 1271 -HSync +Vsync
After restarting X the screen only does 1024x768 max because of the modeline

xorg.conf:

Slackware :: Hardware - Performance Drop - Slow Screen Refresh

May 2, 2010

My system is (and was) Slackware 13 64bit I had DFI LanParty NF4 with AMD Athlon64, 2GB (dual channel) of RAM and Gigabyte GeForce 250 1GB. Now I have Asus P6X58D Premium with Intel i7 960, 6GB (triple) of RAM and the same graphics card + 3 internal SATA hard disks (no partitions change). I replaced hardware and noticed a performance drop.

In text console it looks like slow screen refresh. Also visible during boot when next line of text appears with a delay. I can even see as midnight commander blue window unfolds from the top of the screen when I start it. Switching from text to X takes more time. File copying takes more time. I have Xp guest in VmWare Workstation. Windows runs noticeably faster. I have reinstalled Slackware and changed (in BIOS) default IDE mode for SATA to AHCI. Still slower then with previous hardware. Maybe I am too oversensitive now, but I think moving around in BIOS is not smooth either.

Ubuntu :: Caught In Login Screen Loop - Karmic 9.10

Mar 16, 2010

I have a real issue and need urgent help. I am stuck in a login loop and have looked in several threads in order to find a solution for my issue. I am relatively new to Ubuntu/Linux and do not really know my way around especially when it comes to command prompt. Thus I need someone with patience and who can guide me step by step in order to get to the bottom of the issue and to fix it.

The issue started all of a sudden, no particular reason. I only uninstalled evolution before and then rebooted. The shutting down process got stuck forever and I turn off the PC by holding the power button. Then I attempted to start, the PC boots to the login screen and I select my name and enter the correct password as usual. Then the screen changes for a split of a second to the back command screen and I can see the word crypto or so. Then the screen returns to the login screen and this loops.

Ubuntu :: Infinite Startup Loop - OEM / Black Screen

Apr 18, 2011

I'm doing a dual boot Ubuntu 11.04 and Windows 7 on my Asus UL80v. When I restart and keep going into Ubuntu I'm fine, but I think if I go to Windows and then restart, the infinite start up happens, and I'm currently stuck in this. It'll go to the OEM screen, then a black screen with a cursor, then it goes black, and then back to the OEM screen and so on and so forth.

Luckily I have Ubuntu 10 on my flash drive, so I'm booting to that while I try to figure out this. Which reminds me, when I use the flash drive, there's an option to boot to local disk which also does not work, if that's worth anything. Before this happened, I ran check disk on windows because I ran into some partition troubles. There seemed to be no problems, and I can still access the drives from this flash Ubuntu.

Fedora :: NVidia And Compiz Installed And Working But Screen Doesn't Refresh Correctly?

Oct 30, 2010

What it does is, if you do something to change anything on the screen, for example, highlighting text, or switching from one tab/menu in an application to another. The screen doesn't show the change. The only way to SEE the change is to do something else to the screen, like grabbing and moving the application around, or scrolling the page of a website, etc. If you don't do that, you won't see what's really on the screen, but rather what WAS on the screen.

Another example:

*) say you have an application open with 3 tabs: tab1, tab2, and tab3.
*) Switch from tab1 to tab2 and you see no change on the screen.
*) Switch from tab2 to tab3 and you see tab 2 on the screen, NOT tab 3.
*) Switch from tab3 to tab 2 and you see tab3 on the screen, and NOT tab2.

Or, if you're typing in this box to make a post, and you hit ctrl+a to select all, you see no change. If you click in the box to deselect all, then it looks like you've selected all text still. The only way to see what's currently on the screen is to scroll the text box or page just a bit, or, if you're using an application, then you'd have to move it around on the screen a bit.

As i've said, the nVidia drivers are installed and working, as well as compiz, etc.

Code:
[=v=]$ lspci
00:00.0 Host bridge: ATI Technologies Inc RD890 Northbridge only single slot PCI-e GFX Hydra part (rev 02)
00:02.0 PCI bridge: ATI Technologies Inc RD890 PCI to PCI bridge (PCI express gpp port B)

[Code]....

Also, i did BOTH the dracut thing, and the extra kernel paramter in the grub.conf. So, nouveau is blacklisted. Oddly enough though, i do NOT have this problem when using the nouveau driver...

Also, fwiw, i think that i should mention that i'm not using the "Desktop Settings > Enable Desktop Effects" method, because i always seem to have problems with getting certain features to work, like the background for the cube skydome, etc. How i do it is that i install a package called compiz-manager, and i have it set to run at session start. This makes all of the compiz features work fine. One thing that i've noticed though, is that on my other workstation, i haven't set that up yet, and it seems that is is NOT having the same issue. While compiz-manager was running, i tried to use the "desktop settings" method, and it crapped out and reverted back to the old school desktop. I then tried it again, and it reloaded compiz, and there is no screen update issues now. So it seems that you have to have both of them running in order to get all of the compiz options to work, and not have the screen refresh issue?

Ubuntu Installation :: Thunderbird Won't Refresh It's Window?

Jun 9, 2010

I updated my laptop to Ubuntu 10.04 and among the many problems I've had is this strange one with Thunderbird 3. It will not refresh it's window. That is, it loads, and some of the panes (such as the one on the bottom right that shows the selected message) remain blank.

The work around I found is to grab the title bar and move the window. That will force a refresh, but it is terribly annoying to write a message and not see the words until I stop and move the window a hair.

This behavior happens when the Appearance settings (System > Preferences > Appearance > Visual effect) are set to "Normal" or "Extra". Under "none" Thunderbird behaves normally, but everything else looks terrible!

I'm guessing this is a Compiz problem; has anyone else seen this happen? more importantly, how do I fix it? and all other programs work fine under all appearance settings.
