OpenSUSE :: Emacs Does Not Refresh Properly
Apr 26, 2011
I'm using openSUSE 11.4 Tumbleweed with KDE 4.6. I started using emacs and I wound when I scroll, emacs gui does not refresh the screen properly, and the characters get messy.
Especially the first column (first chars in every lines) does not go away for a while when I scroll.

I had many trouble with my system the past two months. I thought i finally had it running flawless as i encountered another major issue: My Screen doesn't refresh properly (using GNOME). I have blank windows or windows showing old content which only gets updated when i minimize the window or move the mouse over them. And even then only small parts get really refreshed. with 11.2 and now with 11.3 (using KDE4) i got two issues with emacs:
1) The emacs window doesn't properly snap to other windows. There is mostly a small gap inbetween.
2) When switching between buffers with C-x b the emacs window shrinks vertically from below!

I need to monitorize which Wi-Fi APs are in coverage, so periodically I perform a scan whith "sudo iwlist ath0 scan". The problem appears when disconnecting an AP (from the electrical network). In this case, iwconfig shows the disconnected AP during 30-40 seconds after the disconnection.
I'm trying to figure out how to order the kernel to actually refresh the list of in coverage APs, and avoid to show nets that were in coverage but aren't now.

When I start yast2 it seems to hang at around 50% (the lower progress bar) while refreshing the repositories. It can sit there for a minute before moving on. Once yast2 has started and I add / remove repos the refresh happens very quickly. It's only when starting that it gets stuck.
This is something that really only started after I upgraded to 11.2. In 11.1 the progress bar would move cross quickly and you could see the various repos flashing up above the progress bar. I didn't bother with it too much but it's starting to annoy me now. It also sometimes just hangs there permanently and I have to abort it.
I've tried unconditionally updating the yast stuff but it hasn't helped. My network connection is fine and I have now problems or speed issues with browsing the repo urls from a browser.

I installed openSUSE last night thinking I'd give it a try after once using Ubuntu for a couple months and giving up on Windows completely. When I used Windows and Ubuntu I never had much trouble setting the resolution or refresh rates and ran my monitor at 1280x960 72Hz, openSUSE will let me select 1280x960, but the only refresh rate I can select is 60Hz...I've tried the default Nvidia driver that installed with the OS and I tried the one from the website, it's a Geforce FX 5200, is there some way to force the refresh rate to what I want it to be?

I'm using emacs as editor. When using Emacs with any kernel for the 11.4 version, I observe that the cursor does not follow the arrow keys, and that some characters are randomly appearing in the Emacs text windows. This disappears when using the failsafe kernel. What could be the origin of this flaw and what can be done for solving this issue ?

I am using emacs for editing. The problem is that it is giving me a lot of artifacts on the screen. Like the cursor movement leave black marks all over the screen. Cursor is sometimes not visible after movement. If I use highlighting current line then it also leaves artifacts.

I use kde and in it's control panel the only option it has is 50hz. I have an lcd with 1680x1050resolution, and 60hz max refresh rate. It has dvi input capability, but my video card does not so it's on vga. The current refresh rate is killing my eyes. Is there any other way of modifying it? Is there any change i can make in the xorg.conf? My graphic card is an integrated nvidia 7025.

Have loved using v11.0 of Opensuse for years, lately I have noticed over time 7 of my 11 repo's have stopped/failed...does this means Novell-community has/will stop supporting this version and I should move on to a higher version ??? There hasnt been any change in my linux box for years.
Example: Refresh failed: Error: Could not refresh repository 'openSUSE-11.0-Oss': Valid metadata not found at specified URL(s) History: - File '/content' not found on medium [URL]' Error: Could not refresh repository 'openSUSE-11.0-Non-Oss': Valid metadata not found

Does anybody here use the color theme plugin with GNU emacs? I put the files (color-theme.el and the themes folder) in my load path and everything appears to work, but many of the themes don't display correctly.
On those that fail, only the portions of the buffer which actually contain text are themed, the rest is just plain white. This is particularly noticeable when using a dark background, as I tend to do. If this isn't a good enough description, I can attach a picture.
Just as an example: charcoal-black works perfectly while dark-laptop fails as described.
This problem seems to be unique to openSUSE as the plugin works okay on the Red Hat machines I use at school.

i have a Compaq V1100 monitor, which is capable of 75Hz refresh rate (i`m sure, it works under windows) but it works only on 60Hz under linux.my video card is a hd4850 and i use the proprietary fglrx drivers.i tried opensuse 11.0, 11.1 (installed drivers manually, not from repository), and now i have a 11.2 (this time the drivers are from repository the fglrx-desktop version)i have tried editing xorg.conf, using modes generated by gtf (maybe i copid them to the wrong section, but i tried putting them to the monitor and the modes section), tried disabling RandR1.2, also tried setting the monitor to vesa with 75hz refresh rate, i still cant set the refresh rate to 75hz (amdcccle lists only 60hz)

I've given it the old college try for a couple years, starting with openSUSE 11.1 without success. I'm up to 11.4 now with no change or relief. My openSUSE box with NVIDIA proprietary driver and the default refresh settings of 80KHz/75Hz, has an annoying beat frequency with... something, somewhere, causing an annoying ghostly flicker on my trusty 1280x1024 LCD display. I can run both openSUSE and Windows XP on this hardware and they both have the same annoying flicker at those settings. However, in Windows XP, all I have to do is select a 70Hz refresh, resulting in settings of 74.6KHz/70 Hz, and the annoying flicker is cured... for Windows only, of course. I have tried to change these settings in openSUSE to no affect. In 11.4, I find that the advice is to create modelines using CVT and edit xorg.conf, but despite rigid adherence to instructions, there's no change. The monitor continues to see refresh settings of 80KHz/75Hz and the annoying flicker persists.
I hate to rag on openSUSE since it does so many things well, but there's a number of adjustments I'd like to make, especially the vertical refresh, that simply won't change, even when following documented or testamented procedures. Concentrating on the vertical refresh for now, is there anything that really works?

I want to show line numbers automatically in bash scripts (a habit of being a programmer) and when I load an emacs lisp file it works from the command below but the following command that sets up the same thing for bash scripts doesn't work. I played around with this for quite some time and couldn't find anything that would make work. This is the first time I have tried to customize emacs so it could easily be something ignorant on my part.

Some month ago I installed openSUSE 11.1. It worked not bad, but I wanted to get the newes release of Firefox. So I did an upgrade to 11.2. Yast2 refused to work with an error message: unknown option -s (or similar). The regular updates didn't work also. Then I decided to do a new installation. Now I'm having a new problem: Display settings (Anzeige-Einstellungen) reports: Monitor unknown (Monitor unbekannt).
Possible resolution settings are: 800 x 600; 640 x 480; 400 x 300; 320 x 240;
Possible refresh rates are: 60 Hz or 56 Hz @ 800 x 600
I need 1024 x 768 @ 76 Hz. In the previous installation it worked well. How I can teach openSUSE to run 1024 x 768 @ 76 Hz?
YAST2 Hardware information shows me in Monitor > Monitor > Resources > Resolution: High: 768; Vertical frequency: 76; Wide: 1024
The VGA controller is also correct shown in Display > 3d Blaster Savage 4

I am meeting some problems on my opensuse 11.2 system in the last week, I see an higher load on CPU and the system seems to swap a lot of time. Checking on dmesg I found that at boot time I have a lot of errors: I paste a little part of the full log at the end of this post
If I am not wrong I have found and installed an official opensuse 11.2 kernel update through zypper some days ago Moreover, actually I am not able to use yast package manager because it seems to crash during repositories refresh (or just after it)

I am running into a problem with my xen installation. So far I have:
- installed 11.4 64bit
- installed hypervisor and tools (I created br0)
- boot into xen kernel
- run a zypper update
My current configuration is:
Linux linux-c7sq 2.6.37.6-0.7-xen #1 SMP 2011-07-21 02:17:24 +0200 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
using patterns-openSUSE-xen_server-11.4-6.9.1.x86_64:
- bridge-utils-1.4-63.1.x86_64
- xen-doc-html-4.0.2_02-4.9.2.x86_64
- xen-doc-html-4.0.2_02-4.9.2.x86_64
code....
Does anyone have the same problem? There was nothing on google on this, and the xs_handle cannot be debugged as xs.so isn't visible to me.

I just installed GroupWise 8.0.2 and I want to use it as a pop (and if possible) exchange client. It's been a while but I remember that if you don't want to use a GroupWise server you just needed to select 'Caching Mailbox Path' and give it an existing path. If I do that now it just keeps asking for the hostname of the GroupWise server.
Is this a bug or is this feature disabled?
I am running OpenSUSE 11.3 64-bit gnome
