Networking :: Wlan0: Option 43 Has Zero Length, Failed To Parse Packet?

Apr 14, 2010

I have a thread started on the Slackware forum about the possibility of installing Slackware on an older P4 laptop. Well, it installed fine and most things are working, but I am experiencing one problem that I need to solve before I progress to working on other things.

I hope the mods will not consider this a double thread because it is a networking issue and the other thread was started about a different subject, and I thought there might be more networking specialists there (though everyone I meet on the Slack forum is very knowledgeable, this one has not been solved.)

I am trying to connect wireless with an RT2500 chipset, the correct module loads and the machine is connected to the network, but with a "failed" IP address (169.254.167.101). This also occurs with a wired connection. The exact error is:

Code:
err, wlan0: option 43 has zero length
failed to parse packet

It times out then assigns the failed IP address and connects to the network, but of course nothing works.

I use WPA psk and I have another laptop with the same configs and works perfectly with Slackware -current, so I followed the same routine to set this one up. When that didn't work, I backed up the existed /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 and wpa_supplicant.conf, and copied the working files to the new setup. Same result.

There does not seem to be any information about this error either here on LQ, or on the net. I have certainly never encountered it before.

Because it connects with good signal strength, and because it also occurs with wired connections, I can only assume that it is related to WPA in some way. I have not reset the router because I have a number of other machines connected. All of the other machines work, and this one connects, so it is not hardware related.

Networking :: Ubuntu 10.04 Packet Forwarding Between Eth0 And Wlan0

Aug 15, 2010

I would like to pose is very specific to a system I'm assembling. I have ask for assistance from other forums and people, however the answers receive were too vague to implement.

As for my background, I am a network user able to write TCP Linux client/server applications quite easily. At a Linux system level I do not understand the necessary combination of applications and services to affect the following;

Network components;

- WiFi access point/router with four ethernet ports

- Laptop (user computer) cabled directly into the access point via a physical cable

- Second computer running Ubuntu 10.04, with one WiFi (wlan0) and one ethernet (eth0) interface. Eth0 is configured as a DHCP server with the following;

IPaddress 192.168.252.1
broadcast 255.255.255.0

Eth0 is physically connected to an IP camera via a Cross-over cable. The camera is configured as a DHCP client. This connection works perfectly from the Linux box with a KVM attached.

Wlan0 is connected wirelessly to the access point and the Laptop can access the Linux box and vice versa.

My objective is to have the

- Laptop via the access point/router connect directly to the IP camera on the Linux box via the wireless link.

- I would prefer not to make any configuration or routing changes/entries on the access point/router.

The type of response I'm looking for;

- is this possible at a macro level

- what facilities/server are required on the Linux box (I would like all configuration applied to this computer only)

- what commands need to be executed and in what order. If possible a brief explanation of why the command is needed and where it fits in the grand scheme of the solution.

This is probably a gigantic request outside what the forum usual activity.

I try to set-up an Access point using ubuntu 11.04. I am using the minimal configuration file from [URL] together with a TP-Link TL-WN422G (Atheros chipset). I've installed the linux-backports-net-natty-generic drivers. But when trying to start hostapd I always get this output:

CentOS 5 Networking :: Error "SET Failed On Device Wlan0 ; Operation Not Supported' When Configuring D-Link Wlan Card

Nov 15, 2009

I have a desktop that has a d-link DWL-520 wireless card, which was working under Windoze. Today I installed Centos 5.4 on the system , which went cleanly. I then used Network Configuration to set up the wireless card. I specified to use DHCP, set the SSID and authentication password. When I tried to activate the card I get these error messages

Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06): SET failed on device wlan0 ; Operation not supported. Error for wireless request "Set Encode" (8B2A): SET failed on device wlan0 ; Invalid argument. Error for wireless request "Set Encode" (8B2A): SET failed on device wlan0 ; Invalid argument. Determining IP information for wlan0.

The hardware manager seems to have correctly identified the card and chipset, (Intersil Prism 2.5) and installed driver hostap_pci which came with the distro. This web site seems to suggest that this is the correct driver: [URL] searching forums I've found a few references to these errors, but they were from several years ago, and for different distros and cards. I did find a reference to using Network Manager to configure the card instead of Network Configuration. I started the NM service and configured a connection using it instead, but still no luck.

Fedora Networking :: Bring Up Wi-fi PCI Card (ifup Wlan0 Or Ifconfig Wlan0 Up) Whole PC Just Hangs Until Power It Off

May 20, 2009

When I try to bring up my wi-fi PCI card (ifup wlan0 or ifconfig wlan0 up) my whole PC just hangs until I power it off.

I believe I have the right drivers, but cannot see what I am doing wrong.

I'd really prefer not to go down the ndiswrapper route.

Firstly, I can see the PCI card and the driver it is using :

Code:
[J@gx260-f10 ~]$ lspci -k
...
...
01:08.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8185 IEEE 802.11a/b/g Wireless LAN Controller (rev 20)

[Code]....

the PC just hangs for ever. No mouse movement, ctrl-alt-del, nothing.

I have downloaded a Linux driver from Realtek but it will not compile. I have the latest kernel-devel, headers, and gcc. I can post compiler errors if anybody would like. They're all apparently to do with missing parameters.

Ubuntu :: Error "wireless Request "Set Tx Power" (8B26): SET Failed On Device Wlan0 ; Operation Not Supported"

Nov 12, 2010

Although Win7 is not bad either, I'm really happy using new Ubuntu Maverick Meerkat on my notebook. Since I've been using Linux (SimplyMepis, then Arch) on my desktop, I'm really happy that I found a Linux distro which suits me the best. BTW, I have a Toshiba T130-10g which I love for its long battery life. However, I would like to solve some issues/dilemmas/questions (and I searched for s the solutions of some of them on Google so please don't tell me to use it...)

1) How do I turn off Wifi completely in a comfortable way? I tried sudo iwconfig wlan0 txpower off but it threw: Error for wireless request "Set Tx Power" (8B26): SET failed on device wlan0 ; Operation not supported. I even edited something in interfaces configuration file, but it did nothing. Oh, I forgot, my notebook doesn't have a hardware switch to turn off wifi.

2) Setting brightness doesnt work for my laptop. I can set it by udo setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=25 but I'm looking for a more comfortable solution. BTW, editing one GRUB configuration file didn't help and ended in booting into command line (it was something with adding backlight=vendor or something like that...)

3) My touchpad is sometimes too sensitive and clicks somewhere sometimes when I don't want to it. How to make clicks less sensitive? I tried to play with some mouse settings but it didn't help much but perhaps I'm setting a bad parameter.

4) I remember that back in KDE 3.5 times a network manager icon had a setting to switch on net statistics so I could very easily see how much I downloaded every day. But, since KDE 3.5 is not supported anymore, I stopped using it in refusal to update to KDE 4.XX and switched to GNOME. Since for some months I'll have a limited download connection, is there something esay in GNOME to watch my net statistics that wouldn't be deleted after reboot/shutdown?...

Networking :: No Networks At All - Eth0 - Wlan0 ?

Sep 11, 2010

I just switched from Fedora 13 to openSUSE 11.3 on my laptop and so far love it...well...not quite. I'm having some major network issues. As in...no networks.

I installed everything and booted up for the first time. Everything worked great, I had wireless through wlan0 and could connect directly to my home router via eth0 with no problems. Installed a few applications and ran into some problems with hibernating/suspend modes. I rebooted and like magic, NetworkManager said networking was diabled. My WiFi light was off. Network switch on the computer didn't do anything.

I thought alright, I'll connect my ethernet cord and can go from there....problem is that won't work either. I tried searching for drivers online on my desktop, found some and transferred them via USB with no luck. They won't install. I have no idea why, or whats going on but I really need my laptop for school on Monday so it would be AWESOME to have it working by then.

Here is what I have:
Intel 5150 WiFi card
Dell Studio XPS M1640 laptop
OpenSUSE 11.3

Fedora Networking :: Wlan0 Link Not Ready ?

Nov 1, 2009

The past couple days I've been attempting to use ndiswrapper to connect to my home network wirelessly and have run into a slight problem. I'm able to install ndiswrapper (of course), and install the driver. ndiswrapper -l comes up good, showing the driver is in place for my netgear wg311v3 card.

modprobe ndiswrapper I am able to get to work without errors, except, when i type ndiswrapper -ma it writes another file to /etc/modeprobe.d/ndiswrapper causing the deprecation error.

The card scans for networks, and I'm able type in my encryption key.

However it doesn't connect. | grep comes up with the error that the wlan0 link is not ready.

I think I've also been able to determine that the configuration I've put in to the card through the network manager is not actually configured.

Anyone know how I could possibly connect with the card.. It seems it should be able to work. alias wlano is also in place.
