Fedora Networking :: Bring Up Wi-fi PCI Card (ifup Wlan0 Or Ifconfig Wlan0 Up) Whole PC Just Hangs Until Power It Off
May 20, 2009
When I try to bring up my wi-fi PCI card (ifup wlan0 or ifconfig wlan0 up) my whole PC just hangs until I power it off.
I believe I have the right drivers, but cannot see what I am doing wrong.
I'd really prefer not to go down the ndiswrapper route.
Firstly, I can see the PCI card and the driver it is using :
Code:
[J@gx260-f10 ~]$ lspci -k
...
...
01:08.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8185 IEEE 802.11a/b/g Wireless LAN Controller (rev 20)
[Code]....
the PC just hangs for ever. No mouse movement, ctrl-alt-del, nothing.
I have downloaded a Linux driver from Realtek but it will not compile. I have the latest kernel-devel, headers, and gcc. I can post compiler errors if anybody would like. They're all apparently to do with missing parameters.

I just installed Fedora 13 from the Live CD. FIrst off I read the guide and the first step doesn't even work for me. System>Administration>Network does not exist. If I go to System then Preferences I see a Network Manager but it looks nothing like what these screen shots look like. [url]
No wireless card show up in the wireless tab of Network Manager. How can I fix this since my card is listed in ifconfig and iwconfig. Wifi card is a Zonet zew2500p

I have got Ubuntu 10.10 on a Dell Inspiron Laptop. Can't get anywhere with wireless network. Tried a few bits of poking it blindly with a stick:
matthew@ubuntu:~$ lshw -C network
Warning: you should run this program as super-user.

I reckon *-network DISABLED is a problem, I tried sudo ifconfig wlan0 up but that didn't work. The output of that and lspci are on the ubuntu side of my machine. I have also tried pressing my wireless on/off key (F2) but that doesn't work either.

I've had 11.4/KDE working pretty well on dual boot Asus G73SW for a few weeks now. Only issues were the FN-* functions that control keyboard lights and whatnot but no biggie since the essential worked. The last couple of days the update notification was indicating 1,201 updates to be made. Yeah it seemed extreme but I googled around and checked the forums and there was nothing related. I figured I might be missing some packages since I installed from the live KDE CD (still 1202 updates!!!???). So I updated. Big mistake!!!!! Ever since NetworkManager cannot connect to the internet, be it wired or wireless.
Initially it could not even see my home network but it picked it up after I removed the plasmoid from the panel and reinstalled it. However it doesn't respond when I click the network icon and still no connection.I managed to get eth0 working with ifup but not wifi. The last part of network manager log file is quoted below. I can send the whole thing to whoever is interested. I can't make sense of it but maybe someone on the forums can.
Code:
Jul 13 11:09:08 linux-yy10 NetworkManager[1649]: <info> NetworkManager (version 0.8.9997) is starting...

I have managed to configure a wireles PCI card on CentOS 5.3 and it seems to work fine. It is a off brand (Hercules) with a Ralink RT61 chipset. I installed the most current driver (RT2501PCI/mPCI/CB(RT61:RT2561/RT2561S/RT2661) from the rt2x00 Open Source Project. I now have a question that might be very simple for one or more of you to answer. When I issue the command "shutdown -h now", the machine starts to come down and brings down eth0 cleanly, but when it attempts to bring down wlan0, the machine hangs and never brings down the interface OR powers off the box. The only way to complete the power off is to "hard" power off the machine.

I have a desktop that has a d-link DWL-520 wireless card, which was working under Windoze. Today I installed Centos 5.4 on the system , which went cleanly. I then used Network Configuration to set up the wireless card. I specified to use DHCP, set the SSID and authentication password. When I tried to activate the card I get these error messages
Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06): SET failed on device wlan0 ; Operation not supported. Error for wireless request "Set Encode" (8B2A): SET failed on device wlan0 ; Invalid argument. Error for wireless request "Set Encode" (8B2A): SET failed on device wlan0 ; Invalid argument. Determining IP information for wlan0.
The hardware manager seems to have correctly identified the card and chipset, (Intersil Prism 2.5) and installed driver hostap_pci which came with the distro. This web site seems to suggest that this is the correct driver: [URL] searching forums I've found a few references to these errors, but they were from several years ago, and for different distros and cards. I did find a reference to using Network Manager to configure the card instead of Network Configuration. I started the NM service and configured a connection using it instead, but still no luck.

The past couple days I've been attempting to use ndiswrapper to connect to my home network wirelessly and have run into a slight problem. I'm able to install ndiswrapper (of course), and install the driver. ndiswrapper -l comes up good, showing the driver is in place for my netgear wg311v3 card.
modprobe ndiswrapper I am able to get to work without errors, except, when i type ndiswrapper -ma it writes another file to /etc/modeprobe.d/ndiswrapper causing the deprecation error.
The card scans for networks, and I'm able type in my encryption key.
However it doesn't connect. | grep comes up with the error that the wlan0 link is not ready.
I think I've also been able to determine that the configuration I've put in to the card through the network manager is not actually configured.
Anyone know how I could possibly connect with the card.. It seems it should be able to work. alias wlano is also in place.

We need to have the wireless associated with the access point prior to the first login.
Have not been able to get it to work yet. WPA-PSK. wireless will not connect until login.
This is necessary for nfs automount and openldap auth to work. Not a home networking environment.
How to troubleshoot effectively.

I've been able to get a laptop on Fedora 14 (2.6.35.6-48) working with a Netgear WNA1100 Once up and running, I execute "ifconfig wlan0 up" from root, and everything connects just fine and is stable as long as I stay logged in. But, I haven't found how to do this automatically on boot.
I've tried to use NetworkManager, but I cannot figure out how to get the GUI to show up - it says its running and enabled in the Services gui, but I haven't figured out how to actually use it! I checked to see if the nm-applet is running with ps, and for the user login, I see:
I'm not sure if the "sm-disable" flag is my problem, or how to change it. I'm not even sure if NetworkManager will allow me to set things up for bootup, but that is the path I ran down...
I assume this is a fundamentally easy process to set this up on bootup, but I'm not stumbling across the method. I recall doing this kind of thing years ago when I was an engineer, and before I got my lobotomy to become a manager...

I would like to mount a bunch of folders/shares when I start my machine up. I will be adding the mounts into my /etc/fstab folder BUT my WLAN0 only comes "up" and connects to my WAP AFTER logging in.
how I get it to start on PC boot instead of log in?
I think I need to disable network manager but I'm unfamiliar with the procedure in Fedora

I am having a problem trying to transfer large file (~700MB) from one station in my home to another. I have 3 PCs hooked up through a router. 1 is wired to the router and the other two are wireless. One wireless is a laptop that has a built-in Atheros wireless card that was supported during the FC13 install. The other wireless has a plug-in wireless card made by Belkin (F7D1101). I had to use ndiswrapper to get it to work on FC13.(BTW all PCs are running FC13)
The one with the Belkin card is, I think, the problem. The one with the Atheros card will transfer files at a rate of about 8MB/sec to the one with the wired ethernet connection. The one with the Belkin card will not transfer at rates over 300KB/sec to either of the other two PCs. I have tried file transfers both encrypted and not and it makes no difference.

I'm having problems getting my wireless network working. The same problem exists in both Debian 5.04 and Ubuntu 8.04. I'm using a Sonet ZEW2500P USB wireless card, which shows up when I look at lsusb. The card works under Windows, so its not a hardware problem.
When I run iwconfig, wlan0 simply doesn't show up on the list. It doesn't go by any other name either. I've tried adding iface wlan0 inet dhcp auto wlan0 to my /etc/network/interfaces file, but to no effect. I've tried using both the rt2000usb driver and the old rt2570 driver, and made sure both are not loaded at the same time using lsmod, but this doesn't help.
I wanted to try the CONFIG_NET_RADIO enable/rebuild kernel technique, but I can't find CONFIG_NET_RADIO anywhere in my autoconf.h file!
I assume someone will want to see a log file of some kind - just let me know which one (and where I can find it).

I have managed to get everything MOST of the way setup...Come to find out though that I cant get conky to function 100% due to my wireless card being named eth3 instead of wlan0...I can get everything to work except for the signal strength, since ubuntu thinks its an ethernet cared. (although it show up as wireless connection in the network interface on the top right of ubuntu control bar). It's not a BIG deal but I was wondering if anyone had a fix or work around for this. BTW it is a Broad 4311 using Broad STA drivers if that makes any difference at all...

Since 2.6.27.19-170.2.35.fc10.x86_64, dhclient wlan0 doesn't seem to work any more.
However, bizarrely, dhclient eth0 does (to the same D-link wireless router).
The AP shows connected - tail /var/log/messages
No working leases in persistent database - sleeping.
WINXP connects just fine. This (B43) has worked nicely ever since FC10 came out, and I was able to use the WiFi at all kinds of places on a recent trip. Other than a couple of yum updates, I don't think anything else has changed since. Other devices on the wlan are getting their DHCP requests satisfied correctly.
Is anyone else having this problem since about a week ago? Perhaps there's something really obvious I'm missing. I can manually assign an IP address to wlan0, manually edit the routing tables and edit /etc/resolv.conf, and then Wifi seems to work OK, so it doesn't seem to be b43 itself unless it is dropping DHCPOFFERS. If this isn't a regression, does anyone have any tips about how to debug this?

having trouble with my asus 1000 rt2860 wireless n card and WPA/PSK/WPA2 connections. Funky thing is it worked in the 2.26.32-21 kernel (iwconfig shows ra0 as the wireless interface), but when the kernel was updated and pushed through in the ubuntu updates to 2.26.32-22 the wireless card won't stay connected and iwconfig says wlan0 is the interface. I checked the proprietary drivers and they said that the driver for my card was active, but not in use. How do I use the ra0 instead of wlan0?
how do i use the driver that's listed as not being used? I'm having to boot up lucid with the older kernel now, it's annoying, lots of programs aren't running as expected as a result. I've tried manually installing the driver from the RaLink website as detailed in many other posts concerning this wireless card. It seems to work for some people, but not with me.

Installed a TP-Link TG-3269 Gigabit card in a machine running OS 11.3 32 bit, when I go into Yast, Network Devices, Network to try configuring the card I get this errormsg: Unable to configure the network card because the kernel device (eth0, wlan0) is not present. This is mostly caused by missing firmware (for wlan devices). See dmesg output for details. Couldn't find any mention of the card in dmesg's output, (though the 8139 onboard card is in there) there is some stuff about pci host bridge but I don't know whether they would be relevant or not
The chip on the card says it's rtl8169sc but lspci lists it as being 00:07.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device 8369 (rev 10) Done some googling and there don't seem be any drivers for a Realtek 8639 and it returns no matches from a search on realtek's site, but there is a driver there for rtl8169sc chips, which I downloaded and installed, no errors when installing it Even after a reboot I still get the same error in Yast's Network Settings screen, lspci still lists it as 8369 and the device isn't listed at all if I run ifconfig
