Nov 4, 2010installing a Linux distro on an old mac to make a simple desktop home computer details below.The Scenario: I am trying to breath a couple more years of life into a computer illiterate friend's Mac G4 [POS] computer, it is a paper weight but all he needs is a basic desktop and an web machine and he can't be made to buy a new one unless all other options are exhausted.
The computer: Is a Mac G4 power-PC architecture, 450 MHz, 18 GB HDD, 1024 Mb ram ugly little thing that was gotten for free it currently has mac OS 10.2 [unsupported] and newer OS-X (he is more familiarized with Mac) don't run on power-PC. Currently web pages don't display correctly, flash and other plug-ins and web scripts don't operate and it is very clunky with software bloat.
My solution? Is to install Linux so he can have a trim clean operating system. Ubuntu 10.04 [community ppc variant] runs off a live CD but is dead slow on account of the low processor power and I was unable to get gnash to run flash video a necessity as Adobe has abandoned power-PC, I suspect the gnash error is between chair and keyboard, advice is welcome. I would like to install a distro more suited to this system currently I am looking at mintPPC but can't quite follow the installation instructions what is meant by Debian squeeze the download link gives me a mini.iso is this the same thing? Also clarification on the terminal commands would be of help. Advice on a different distro is also welcome preferably one with an all in one installing process rather than the mint, Debian, Ubuntu multi-part thingy that mintPPC is; it just needs to be power PC compatible and able to run on a few hundred MHz maybe there is an easy way to put LXDE or Xcfe on a more popular Disto? As for me: I am a new Linux convert, discovering the glory this past July and am still learning my way around I am computer literate and somewhat savvy but I am not a tech head and I HATE working on them I can and do it but I don't like it and I am often hampered by ignorance of the latest new/trends and an acute allergy to Macs and Apple products in general.

Sep 25, 2010've been looking for the answer both on the web and this forum but I couldn't find it;How can I put Ubuntu, Encrypted Ubuntu (Luks + LVM), Backtrack and eventually WinXP on the same drive with a Grub2 as a bootloader?I'm a bit confused about partitioning; I suppose that I need only one /boot partition to store the kernel of the encrypted Ubuntu, while the other distros will have their /boot within each partition, like this:
1) 500 Mb; /boot for the encrypted Ubuntu on partition #2
2) 10Gb; Luks + LVM Ubuntu
3) 10Gb; clear Ubuntu (whose /boot is in same partition #3)
4) 2Gb; Backtrack
5) [Win..]
In this case, will the update-grub command find and recognize correctlyll the OSs or should I edit something in the "40_custom" file
Fedora Installation :: 12 - No Devices Found On Which To Create F / System
Nov 19, 2009While installing Fedora 12, no devices were found on which to create file system (see attch.). I get the same message either on Live CD or DVD boot start. It looks like Fedora do not see my hdd. But Palimpsest can see my hard drive (see attch.)
Hdd is on my NForce 4 Ultra m/board and connected via "sata". Also I have raid controller on my board. But it is not in use: I turned it off in bios.

Fedora Installation :: Does Live USB Creator Create A Working System For Windows 7?
May 12, 2010Before going too far it may be simplest to answer the question "Does Live USB Creator create a working system for Windows 7?" If not then don't bother reading further. I have installed Live USB Creator on a 32-bit Windows 7 computer but when I run it I can't for the life of me get it to recognize any type of drive. I've read and tried the instructions of using the command line with the --force [drive]: but that has no effect Maybe I am misunderstanding this whole program. From what I read about it, this program will create a working Windows system, place it on a USB stick and then run Windows on a different computer. In my application I would like to run it on my work computer which has Windows XP. If this application should work then will I have complete access to all my computer drives and files and the network/internet? I imagine I would need to install all necessary programs so that I could use them in Windows 7 and would I need to install those programs on the USB stick or could they be on a local hard drive?

Ive recently been looking into other distros and came across arch linux. As i installed arch it was recommended that you create partitions for various directories, such as boot, tmp etc.
Ive read the advantages of this and would now like to set ubuntu up in a similar fashion, alongside arch. Whats the 'best' way to do this. Can ubuntu use the partitions set up by arch? Jul 28, 2011All of my PCs are set up to either run Ubuntu directly, or are dual boot Ubuntu and some variant of Windows. One of the things I like about this is that in the rare instances that I get a virus I can simply boot into Ubuntu and run ClamAV to remove the virus from there.
I have a friend who recently picked up a nasty virus and we are having a hard time getting his machine to boot at all without all sort of strange behaviors. Under that scenario I can't trust Wubi to work correctly. Soo....
Is it possible for me to create a bootable CD, DVD or USB drive from my machine? I'd like to use my machine because I can update the virus definitions before I create the image and then use that to clean his machine.

Nov 21, 2010A while ago I made the jump from Mandriva to Fedora. I am very pleased with Fedora, but some things do not seem to be as easy as with Mandriva. Maybe I just got to find my way around and am not aware there are packages that will do what I want, so I think it is a good idea to ask here..Well - I have a multi-boot system. There are a few partitions to test out different Linux versions (like specialised music distro's with low-latency kernels). As a result the MBR gets overwritten by other installs now and then.In Mandriva it was possible to create a simple boot disk without any images - just a "link" or "jump" to vmlinuz etc. on the root partition from the main Linux system. I think only the MBR part was written on the floppy. It was very easy done in the control centre by choosing fd0 in stead of hda as boot medium.
This disk whas a life saver if the MBR was overwritten by another OS intall. I just put in the floppy and boot from that floppy strait into the standard grub menu and so I was able to re-create grub (by doing the same process but pointing to hda in stead of fd0 as boot medium).
Is there a way to create the same simple boot disc under Fedora 14?

I have one hard drive with windows XP on it. Another with Ubuntu. As it stands there is no link between them. Is it possible to create a dual boot using these disks? - I do not want to reinstall any of them.
Preferably, I would like the boot choice (or booter? - not really sure what I'm talking about) to be on the newer Ubuntu drive.
It is on an old machine with 256MB Ram. So slow in fact, I'm going to change the desktop environment to Xubuntu - but that's mostly irrelevant.
As I understand it, I should make the Ubuntu drive master, XP as slave... but then what?

Apr 21, 2010I have a Samsung N110 running Windows 7 and I would like to install Ubuntu Netbook remix which I downloaded from [URL] I want to install it on the netbook in lieu of Windows so am not looking for a Live CD/USB option. I have run usb-creator.exe on my XP machine but no matter what I do I can't get the "make startup disk" to un-grey. I have selected the CD which contains the iso I unpacked, and it detects my USB drive (I:) which is 4Gb I had exactly the same problem at work when trying this with the .iso I downloaded so it isn't specific to this machine.

I have the following config on my Presario Laptop:
60gb SATA hard drive
41.6gb available
3% fragmented
I would like to partition the hard drive to install Ubuntu as a dual boot. how I need to do this or point me in the right direction? I did begin an install from a cd I burned from ISO. I started by just going for the auto installation and what it recommended. However, when I tried to install, I got an error message that changes were uable to be written to disk and had to abort??
Assuming I can get past the error I would like to know how to create the partitions for root, home and swap and how much space for each.
Ubuntu Installation :: Won't Boot / System Does Not Boot: "no Bootable Device?
May 19, 2010Installed ubuntu 10.4 over previous ubuntu on Intel 945G. After installation and reboot the system does not boot: "no bootable device - insert boot disk and press any key".
Installation was done from USB-stick, prepared by UNETBOOTin. I have two HD's, one used for system + storage, another one just for storage. I manually deleted previous system partitions of previous ubuntu install in system HD. The system HD had about 1/3 of free and unallocated space for system partitions, which ubuntu installer created during the installation.
I tried to reinstall grub from bootable USB-stick and it succeeded but it did not help. The system is still not bootable.
I have used ubuntu for years and never happened something like this. Am I missing something or is ubuntu missing something???
HW failure is ofcourse possible but I am quite skeptical about it because Live ubuntu from USB-stick works well.

Jul 26, 2010I've been having a problem on my AMD based machine, 4cpu, gigabyte ga-ma78gm-s2h Mobo, 8GB mem, two 2 terabyte Sata HDs.One thing I've found is that any kernel after 2.6.32-17 has a randomness at boot time whether the system will completely boot or not.
For instance just today I downloaded and installed 2.6.32-24
It fails to boot (I've tried cold boot, warm boot).Running its repair also fails to completely boot.My experience is that if I keep trying it "may" eventually boot but I believe there was some change after 2.6.32-17-generic that's causing the problem.Because as with 2.6.32.23... which also fails to complete bootup many times... eventually my guess is that 2.6.32.24 will also boot "sometimes".But why does 2.6.32.17 always boot for me? Something changed and its not my setup.

Mar 18, 2010I'm trying to install Fedora onto a computer that has Windows XP on the first of two SATA drives. Windows 7 is on the second drive.
I installed Fedora no problems on a 14 gig free space I created on the first drive and told it where and what my other OS's were. Fine so far. I didn't tell it to overwrite the MBR on the XP (first) drive. I took the second option which I "think" put the boot loader on the fedora partition.
All good - till I rebooted and I just saw my Windows 7 loader with my options for XP and Windows 7 but no Fedora.
So, if I overwrite the MBR on the first drive, will that mean I can't access my Windows 7 installation?
How SHOULD I set up the boot loader?

Nov 10, 2010When I first installed Ubuntu as a dual-boot (about 18 months ago), I had problems booting to XP, which were eventually solved for me in this thread, which set Windows to boot Ubuntu, rather than the other way round.
I've just had to do a fresh install of Maverick, following a major problem, and I'm back to being unable to boot XP. The error is different from before and I don't want to start guessing at what to do about it and screwing things up still further.
The GRUB menu lists Ubuntu first, then Windows XP. If I choose XP, it takes me to my previous boot menu, with Windows as the first option. However, selecting this gives me

Please re-install a copy of the above file. Windows and Ubuntu are on separate hard drives. XP was fine until I re-installed Ubuntu.

Aug 26, 2009I had F10 installed, then was tempted to download F11 (Leonidas). I was not happy with the OS, so I reinstalled F10.Now I cannot get my CD-RW Drive or DVD Rom Drive to operate fully. I can open documents saved in a CD but I cannot get any sound from music discs.They were working in the first F10. The icons are showing in "Computer" and appear ok in the Bios. I have tried disconnecting them both, rebooting, then reconnecting, without success. The details are:- Lite-on-CD-RW Drive & DVD Rom Drive unit- Pioneer.

Apr 9, 2010My buddy has a computer with a problem and hes asked me to see if I can retrieve the data documents from the computer. The subject computer is a COMPAQ PRESARIO SR5030NX with a Pentium 4 cpu, 3.2 GHz, 1 GB RAM, running Windows Vista Home Basic.
His goal was to create a dual boot computer UBUNTU and Vista. What he did was to install UBUNTU, partitioning the computer in two partitions. The computer is now giving an error code of 21 when GRUB Loader starts up. Is there a restore disk or some kind of utility that can undo what was done to the computer. He has no backup disk.
I tried Recovery Commander Ver. 3 made by Avanquest but as their website indicates it�s for XP. They never updated it for Vista and Windows 7. Is there a utility that can undo some of the changes that were made to the machine when UBUNTU was installed, albeit, unsuccessfully.
(1) I have an HP PC running XP professional and I was wondering if I take the hard drive out from the COMPAQ and rig it to my HP via a SATA/IDE to USB 2.0 Adapter device would I be able to see the contents of that COMPAQ computer that had Vista and now UBUNTU.
(2)What about attaching the COMPAQ internal hard drive and attaching it to my HP as a slave drive.
(3)Can the UBUNTU disk going to help?
Were just after the data files and not software programs.

Apr 29, 2010I am trying to use Ubuntu for the 2nd time, I tried before with a different version buy gave in eventually as I couldn't create a bootable USB drive.
I have tried to create a USB boot from the USB Creator on the download it gets to 94% and fails with a chksum error, I have established that the file is indeed the right one.
What could the problem be? Im using a 1gb stick do you think it may be failing due to it been too small?
Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 - Create Dual Boot And Partition Locked
Jan 23, 2011I had Ubuntu 10.04 on this machine and wanted to convert it to a dual boot. It's a 500GB hard drive. The HDD had 3 partitions: one really big one, and two swap areas of about 6 GB each. I ran GParter and carved the big partition into a 100GB partition and a 400GB partition (less the swap areas). Then I installed Windows XP into the 100GB partition, then installed Ubuntu 10.04, selecting the "create dual boot" option.
It dual boots beautifully, and everything runs just fine. But I find that Ubuntu has split the 400 GB partition into two 200 GB partitions, and one of them is simply off-limits. I can see it, but I can't write to it. The attached png shows the Disk Utility, with the mystery partition selected. Its only contents is a folder called lost+found; I cannot open it.

May 5, 2011I have a Lenovo laptop with Windows 7 pre-installed. I would like to dual boot Win 7 and Ubuntu or Linux Mint.
In my old laptop I had an OEM Win XP disc that I bought specifically for dual boot purposes (didn't want the pre-installed vista). This only has a one PC usage though unfortunately.
how to make a windows 7 boot disk? I made a RECOVERY disk already, but I don't think that will work as a boot disk right? Particularly if I completely wipe out or swap out the HDD (which I might do).
fyi: I NEED Win7 for a few special programs for my school. WINE will not work and VirtualBox puts to much strain on my computer.

Aug 9, 2011When you have boot troubles, you will often be asked to run Boot-Info-Script in order to see a summary of your boot parameters. Standard method is a little difficult, so I made a little GUI to do it very easily :
1) Boot on Ubuntu live-CD or live-USB. (or Boot-Repair-Disk which will lead you automatically to step 4)
2) Connect internet
3) Open a terminal and type :

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:yannubuntu/boot-repair && sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install -y boot-repair && gksu boot-repair
4) Click on "Create a BootInfo summary":
5) Done !
Now just indicate (or copy/paste) the URL that appears to people who help you on this forum.

Q3) Lastly... I read GRUB2 is the default boot manager... should I use that, or GRUB / Lio ?
I have a total of 3 HDDs on this system:
-- 2x 500GB WDD HDDs (non-advanced format) ... RAID-0 setup
-- 1x 320GB WDD HDD (non RAID setup)
(The non RAID HDD is intended to be a SWAP drive for both XP and Ubuntu = 2 partitions)
I plan on making multiple partitions... and reserve partition space for Ubuntu (of course).
I have the latest version of the LiveCD created already.
Q4) Do I need the Alternate CD for this setup?
I plan on installing XP before Ubuntu.
This is my 1st time dual booting XP with Ubuntu.
