I would like to create a FULL recovery CD/DVD of my system with a boot restore...
Any recommended for Ubuntu 10LTE Server.
is there a way to create a system restore disk or recovery partition ? somewhat like windows has. I do back up my files regularly but a back up of entire os system and settings would be handy.running ubuntu 10.10

Setup:
1. Desktop running WinXP
2. Lenovo S10e netbook running Win7RC1 (just expired.) no DVD drive.
3. 1 DVD by Novell and Lenovo with "SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 (For recovery select Restore System from the initial Menu.) November 2008"
4. 4GB USB drive. Laptop can boot from it.
Problem:
Need to install the system to the Laptop using the USB drive. Doesn't install.
What I did:
Mostly followed the guide at "Installation without CD - openSUSE.htm" my USB drive is G:
used the HP USB Disk storage format tool to make my USB bootable.
Copied all files from the dvd to the usb drive
Moved G: ooti386loader* to G:
Deleted E: isolinux.bin
Renamed E: isolinux.cfg to E: syslinux.cfg
Downloaded syslinux-3.85.zip from [kernel.org]
Extract syslinux-3.85.zip to c: syslinux
CD'ed to c: syslinuxwin32 directory in a cmd prompt
Ran syslinux -ma E: .....
Result:
Runs all the way through, gets to a windowed program called ">>> Linuxrc v3.0.20 (Kernel 2.6.22.5-31-default) <<<" Code: could not find the openSUSE Repository. Activating manual setup program
Main Menu: Settings, System Information, Kernel Modules (Hardware Drivers), Start installation or System, Verify Installation CD-ROM/DVD, Eject CD, Exit or Reboot, Power off Cant find anything on the usb drive (obviously?) so what do I do now?
This is where I'm at and quite stuck... not sure what other flags there are to use, what I have to move around or rename.
I want to be able to recover from a disaster by simply inserting a CD of my entire system, boot from it, and reinstall my system back to the way it was before the disaster. After much research here, I feel the need to ask this question directlybut as a new user, I find it somewhat difficult locating information.
I have seen references to all sorts of backup software. I am trying to use Simple ackup.Each time I run this utility, it gives me a process ID and then apparently vanishes. I don't see the process running in System Monitoror see anything recognizable in var/backups.Perhaps, being as new to Linux as I am, I am simply overlooking something. I must say though, that these are the friendliest user groups I have ever seen. It amazes me that so many people are so willing to post long, complicated solutions to someones problem
My Mini13 came with hardy preloaded, and it's got pretty messed up since, so I'd like to restore factory OS via a grub entry that looks like this:
title System Restore

boot
This points to a partition which, when mounted, has this stuff in it:
bootfs.img initrd0.img install.sh logo.png syslinux.cfg vmlinuz
boot.msg install.cfg ldlinux.sys rootfs.img vesamenu.c32
I'm not a computer, but that looks pretty good to me but when I select this grub option it just says:
Boot Error
Is there a log or something that might give me more info about the error?
First off, Ubuntu 10.4 is working great on my new laptop and I really enjoy it. And it is super fast. My question is now that I have everything all set up, all my packages, my windows settings, and my ATI driver, my updates, etc., I want to be able to keep it all. Maybe somebody could point me in the right direction or give me some better terminology. Would love to learn more about distros in the future. For now I just don't want to have to do all this updating again. There are a few things I have found like Clonezilla and others, but they seem to be a bit advanced and more for servers.

I don't have the CD with me right now and i need to fix some mistakes of mine (being a n00b to ubuntu) urgently i.e. i can't wait for morning. Is there anyway i can rollback to the time when my ubuntu installation was in mint condition?

Well I've decided to move all my data from one VPS to another, and Iwanted to know if there was a way from within Ubuntu to make a full system image backup,ch I can then just transfer to the new Ubuntu VPS, and restore it there ..Unfortunately my VPS control does not have any working backup option right now, so I can only make the backup manually from within Ubuntu, if there is a way to do it

I've created the eRecovery discs but those will only restore XP - not the actual recovery partition (which I'd like to have in case I sell the laptop later etc).
How can I backup the actual recovery partition, and keep its boot file intact. Then how can I restore this partition at a later time?
Just a while ago, I switched on my desktop to copy over some PowerPoints I had made over the weekend, and Ubuntu would not boot (it has a kernel panic error.) Instead of dealing with the problem, I just finished with a new reinstall. I have all my files,to my external hard drive and my diligence to make copies of ALL my files, but I have NONE of my settings OR programs. All I have is access to my external hard driveand so I have to start from scratch. I know I can copy, for example, the .mozilla in my home folderget my plug-ins and bookmarks for Firefox and so on, but I would like to know if it was possible to create a CD or DVD with a "snapshot" of the system with its settings and programs (the files needn't be backed up, I already have devised a system to do that)so I guess you can say that I want everything but my files backed up and burned on an installable CD in case my computer decides to do this again (although it would be great to have my files on the same CD or DVD, but that's unrealistic).
So, are there any programs/utilities out there that are similar to the recovery media creator utilities such as those that come with HP computers? Also, is there something like Acronis True Image that will work with Ubuntu? I am almost falling asleep as I am typing this, so I will not see this until I get up in the morning; I spent the whole entire night trying to get up and running again, but I would appreciate any input as to how to be able to create installable snapshot CDs with settings and programs preinstalled and ready to go

I have a Computer, It came with Windows 7 64bit on it. I installed Ubuntu through WUBI. I used the Windows Disk Management program to resize my HDD. I shrunk the main drive and created a 20 gig free space. I installed WindowsXP on this 20g space. I had to change from AHCI to ATA. I started my new XP installation. As I should have expected my the screen that let me pick between Windows 7 and Ubuntu was gone, and it just said XP. Well thats cool. I get in XP use bcdeasy and use the install Win7 to mbr. So I restarted. Great I now I have Ubuntu and Win7... but no XP. So i think, okay, ill boot into Ubuntu, use the update grub command and XP will be there, so i do it and restart. No XP, So i try to boot into Win7 and see if i can do something in there.. No luck it says it can't boot and takes me to a startup recovery thing. Which, as Windows recovery things tend to do, doesn't find anything wrong. So I have Ubuntu now, which is great, but I do need Windows.

When i bought it it had one partition only (plus the first one for windows recovery) When I installed ubuntu I partitioned my hard drive at my pleasure as you can see in attached image When I try to recover windows 7 it says it "can't find the windows partition or it's too small" Since 80 gb is not too small, i bet it can't recognized the partition anymore. Can anybody suggest a way to let it recognize my sda2 ? Does it have to have the "C:" label or "Windows something"? (I can only name it C without colons) Does it have to formatted FAT in a particular way ?

I have had Kubuntu installed for quite some time, I very rarely use it because of my dependanacy on windows but frequently boot up Kubuntu to do updates.A few days ago, I tried to boot Kubuntu and it comes up in command line only, I login but it stays at the command line, no KDE.On the boot list I have Ubuntu 2.6.32-21-generic.I have gotten used to using KDE and now I need to use Linux but am not command line fluent.
View 10 Replies View Relatedbest/simplest way to back up my triple-boot machine, which has Karmic 32-bit, Karmic 64-bit and Windows 7 (64-bit) installed on 3 equal slices of the internal 1TB disk. There are a total of 6 partitions (1 primary+1 logical partition each for the two Karmic, and 2 primary partitions for Win7), and I would like to back it up on an external disk such that the whole system can be restored as-is by writing over the disk. I guess this means correctly backing up data+partition table+MBR, and I would also prefer backing up only the used portion of the disk (rather than creating a 1TB mostly empty image file).
To my knowledge the only way to reliably do this is with "dd" command, but I have never used it ("fsarchiver" seems to be the next best option, but it cannot back up MBR yet; and "partimage" does not have ext4 support). As described here and here, I should run the following commands from a live boot:
1) To back up entire data in compressed format (using 1MB read block to speed up the process):
dd if=/dev/sda bs=1MB | gzip > /backup/image.gz
2) To back up MBR+partition table (stored within the first 512 bytes of the disk):
dd if=/dev/sda bs=512 count=1 of=/backup/image.mbr
3) To restore data:
gzip -dc /backup/image.gz | dd of=/dev/sda
4) To restore MBR+partition table:
dd if=/backup/image.mbr of=/dev/sda
I had a triple OS xp 7 and Linux Open SUSE 11.4 the last one was the active partition.the grup boot loader used to provide a OS selection screen .any way , I cant boot my system after restoring a full disk image created by "Acronis TrueImage program" , what happens is that i get a BIOS message "there is no operating system insert disk and try again"however when i set winxp partation as active i can boot winxp againThere is some thing I'd like to ask for please ,when i install Linux : did it install grup boot loader on the master boot record or on the boot sector of the / partition ?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a bunch of pictures that I thought I had backed up but as it turns out I didn't, the problem is I formatted the drive they were on.
It is a 1TB hard drive, and it was running Ubuntu 10.10 using full disk encryption from the alternate install CD. After formatting, I installed Ubuntu Server 10.10, also using full disk encryption.
I know the encryption key for both installs (and the keys in fact are the same).
I have turned off the machine, and have stopped writing to the disk. I am hoping because it is a 1TB drive, and I have only written over it with 2GB of data, that there is a chance I can recover the data.
I have a brand new Lenovo Thinkpad T400. Lenovo claims that it should boot into recovery mode if the blue 'ThinkVantage' button is pressed during boot. However, this does not happen after I have installed Ubuntu (Koala). First of all, nothing happens when I press the blue button, and no recovery partition is visible in GRUB boot menu. However, the partition itself is still there. The question is how to boot from it?
I found some tips from [URL], however, they are for GRUB, but my Ubuntu comes with GRUB2. I tried to adapt their instructions to my case. I added this to /etc/grub.d/40_custom:

That, however results in message about bootmgr missing at startup.
One option would be to start Windows and reinstall Windows MBR, but this would nuke my GRUB, and things could quickly go downhill from there as I am using full disc encryption for my Ubuntu partitions.
I wanted to know if there is variant of RollbackRX (www.rollbackrx.com.au) freeware or payable. RollbackRX used to Backup/Restore whole system changes in less than 1 minute before OS boot. And it does not consume a lot of free space.

I don't need a beginners tutorial on mkdir and fdisk -l. Is there a foolproof way to get my drives to do what I want? I dual boot fedora and ubuntu, but have the same issues on both.
View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter upgrading to 9.10 Karmic Koala, my Amilo Laptop (AMD64) refuses to boot. I installed GRUB2 which works fine for my WinXP ... and Karmic will boot in recovery mode.
When trying a normal boot, I get a black screen. CRTL-ALT-F1 yields just a blinking cursor. The system will immediately reboot when pressing CRTL-ALT-Entf.
When booting in recovery mode, I choose "Resume normal boot" from the menu, log in while in cosole mode and enter "startx" ... and the grafic environtment works fine!
Why does the system work in recovery mode, but does not start with a normal boot?

Firstlyi want to specify that i read many threads and guides before posting this, tried to follow some advice and solutions but nothing worked (but I am a beginner user, and maybe i did something wrong!)My laptop is a Lenovo SL410 (i bought it in China) which came with pre-installed Windows Vista.I had many trouble with resizing the partition in order to make room for Ubuntu but i finally managed.
