When I am doing a fresh install and it tries to create partition i get this error:
Failed to Create a file system The ext4 file system creation in partition #6 of Serial ATA Raid nvidia_cjtiagcb(stripe) failed.
I have a Dell Mini 9 netbook. The SSD took a dump, so I ordered a Super Talent 16gb replacement. I put it in yesterday, tried to install 10.10 and constantly get errors. The first error, which I haven't had since, was [ERROR 30] Read-only File System. The install obviously failed. Wondering if perhaps the file got messed up in translation, I redownloaded 10.10, reformatted the flash drive (sandisk cruizer 4gb), put 10.10 back on via the program on the Ubuntu site. No luck, but no longer the [error 30]. Tried again using Unetbootin, no luck. Rinse repeat a few times, no errors just a working cursor spinning and spinning and spinning and spinning and.. you get it.
Tried to put WinXP on it just because I was that frustrated, no luck.
Now I'm back to Ubuntu (because let's face it, who wants to deal with Windows, christ they make it so complicated). I'm currently using 10.04 because I was hoping (praying) it might just be a 10.10 thing.
No such luck, now it goes to step 7/7, starts, and 5% of the way thry "creating ext4 file system" it says "the ext4 file system creation in partition #1 (0,0,0)(sda) failed." I have checked the SSD in the Disk Utility, SMART tests are clean. I have gone to terminal and run fdisk and had a smarter person than me look at the copypasta, no errors, I have deleted all existing partitions in gparted and started fresh. I have tried the auto partitioning, I have tried manual, I am going insane. Literally insane. My preschooler thinks I've leaped off the deep end.
Could it be my flash drive? Could the SSD be defective despite the tests coming back clean? What do I need to type into terminal? Is there a way to entirely entirely entirely wipe the SSD to make it fresh-out-the-box clean? I will happily provide whatever you need if it means I can get my husband off my back about this stupid netbook with its stupid tiny keyboard.
As I understand it creating an image of a Linux system makes an exact copy of the OS and any user files/configurations/programs etc. What i would love to do is create an image of my work PC and install it at home on my desktop. Can someone briefly explain the process of creating and installing images of Linux systems?

I grabbed the new lubuntu 10.10 from [URL] but it turns out I'm having a problem installing it on my netbook (Asus Eee PC 1015PED). While installing, this error pops up:

I have iMac 2.4GHz with rEFIT installed. I installed Unity on one of the partition. Kernel is still 2.6.38.8. I am getting error message when I run the command
sudo gedit /etc/x11/xorg.conf
The error message is

Unable to install Ubuntu 9.10 on a new internal harddrive. The hardrive contains no operating system. This hardrive is the only drive present in the system.
Whenever the installation trys to mount the ext4 partition the following error appears: The attempt to mount a file system with type ext4 in SCSI1 (0,0,0), partition #1 (sda) at /failed
Iv'e tried over and over to get past this error to no avail.
I have searched for answer to this question but cannot find one. I am trying to install ubuntu 8.04.2 on my Acer TravelMate 290 but when I get to the install stage I get the error message "the file system creation in partition 1 of sci1 (0,0,0) (sda) failed". I am dedicating the entire HD to ubuntu, no windows and no dual boot.

I plugged in my USb drive into my computer yesterday and tried to delete a folder. I was unable to do so and got the following message
Cannot move file to trash, do you want to delete immediately? The file "my file" cannot be moved to the trash. Show Details Unable to create trashing info file: Read-only file system
So when I click on delete I get another error message:
Error while deleting.
There was an error deleting Case Study Database. Show Details Error removing file: Read-only file system
At this point I can only click on Skip, Skip All, or Cancel.
I have not changed anything on the stick recently so I dont know what is causing the problem.

so, I shrunk my recovery in Windows 7 successfully, and booted into my Fedora 12 live cd to run Gparted, and move the partitions so that the free space could go towards fedora, I did such, and then I couldn't expand the partition to my dismay. Next, I woke up this morning, tried to boot to fedora to run SSH, grub loaded, but when I tried to boot fedora, I got the "File system check failed" error, and when I tried 7, it just went to a blank screen with a single "_" in the top left-hand corner.
All my torrents go to my home/username/Download/ folder, I could read/write yesterday but now I cant even copy the files to a flash drive.The error i get is "Cannot create regular file '/home/username/Download/file' : Read only file system.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI don't know why I can't seem to install Ubuntu on any computer I have! I tried this before when WindowsXp crashed on my old computer and I tried to install Ubuntu 9. Grub or something like that failed to install on the last one and now this bootloader failed on this go around.( I should mention that Win 7 crashed on me, which is the reason for this go-a-round). I was presented with a dialog box and asked to choose a different folder.
I looked at thew list and saw that it was trying to install it on an SD card that I had left in. I then chose my harddrive, as the place to install the bootloader but now clicking the OK button did nothing. As a matter of fact the whole installation had ground to a halt and I had to reboot from the cd. I had selected a small partition for Ubuntu(about 60 GB) could this have been the problem? Also, am I at risk here, I had Microsoft Security Essential running when I had Win 7 running?
I was fortunate enough to acquire some old 2u server hardware (from 2005) on which I wanted to learn how to use Ubuntu. Ubuntu fails to mount any partition, in fact gparted cannot detect anything. The installer detects the scsi hdds but then fails when it tries to actually make a partition. I've searched this forum, linuxquestions and google. Nothing relevant was found and the solutions involving probing with commands within linux were irrelevant since zero partitions show.
I've tried Ubuntu 10.4, but settled on trying to install 8.10 since it seems to boot up faster and at least detects the physical hard drives quicker. Also tried windows xp and that says "no hard disk detected". I would've tried windows 7 but the server doesn't have a dvd drive.
I installed Ubuntu a few days ago and its been working fine untill I got home today and It wont boot. It comes up with the boot manager to select what OS I want to load but when I select ubuntu it says "Mount of filesystem failed." ,"A maintenance shell will now be started". Then it just goes to command line with "root@user:"Any ideas why It won't boot properly? It also says control-d will terminate this shell and try again, but to no avail it just returns the same error.
View 8 Replies View RelatedMy buddy has a computer with a problem and hes asked me to see if I can retrieve the data documents from the computer. The subject computer is a COMPAQ PRESARIO SR5030NX with a Pentium 4 cpu, 3.2 GHz, 1 GB RAM, running Windows Vista Home Basic.
His goal was to create a dual boot computer UBUNTU and Vista. What he did was to install UBUNTU, partitioning the computer in two partitions. The computer is now giving an error code of 21 when GRUB Loader starts up. Is there a restore disk or some kind of utility that can undo what was done to the computer. He has no backup disk.
I tried Recovery Commander Ver. 3 made by Avanquest but as their website indicates it�s for XP. They never updated it for Vista and Windows 7. Is there a utility that can undo some of the changes that were made to the machine when UBUNTU was installed, albeit, unsuccessfully.
(1) I have an HP PC running XP professional and I was wondering if I take the hard drive out from the COMPAQ and rig it to my HP via a SATA/IDE to USB 2.0 Adapter device would I be able to see the contents of that COMPAQ computer that had Vista and now UBUNTU.
(2)What about attaching the COMPAQ internal hard drive and attaching it to my HP as a slave drive.
(3)Can the UBUNTU disk going to help?

Why am I trying to create folders in the file system you ask? I'm messing around with Drupal and I want to add some modules. So I need to go to the blablabla/sites/ folder and add an 'all' folder followed by a 'modules' folder.No problem, right? Wrong?It seems I don't have the rights to create folders in the file system ( which I only recently figured out is actually root. duh. )I've figured out that I was able to install all the LAMP parts because I was using 'sudo' before every command, which apparently grants me temporary rights to root? ( I think? )Sooo... what's the magic for creating folders and transferring files to my Drupal folder... which it seems requires root permissions?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have set up a dual boot system with Windows XP and Ubuntu 9.10. I have upgraded Ubuntu to the most current version available online. I'm unable to create folders or subfolders in the Linux file system. I have researched the manual and my Unbuntu Linux book and see that I should be able to click on 'File' from the menu, then 'Create Folder', and then input the new folder name, but the 'Create Folder' selection is 'grayed' out which I conclude means that it is set on inactive and unable to be used. I am able to access my Windows disk by mounting and then typing in my password, so I have Administrator privileges.
I'm able to create a new folder in Unbuntu Linux for my Windows (NTFS) files. When I installed Unbuntu, I did not see any options to have write access to the Ubuntu file system. I can create new files within the existing folders. Soon after working out my Linux problems, I will be using PHP/MySQL/Apache to do some important work, so I will need to be able to create new folders and subfolders in my Linux system. I have some urgent tasks I need to do away from my PC soon, so I will be a while before getting back to this.
Based on Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx, Linux 2.6.32, Gnome 2.30 and Xorg 7.4, Linux Mint 9 "Isadora" features a lot of improvements and the latest software from the Open Source World. anyways, I just done a fresh install and I cannot create no folders in my own file system, anywhere? It must be permissions, because when I try in terminal I get permission errors. Also this is my first Linux install

I've been stupid, and used kleansweep, which deleted a load of files and in the process killed everything. When I boot I get "file system check failed". Then it gives me a command prompt. I really don't want to have to reinstall ubuntu as I have a lot of stuff installed on it.

Now I ask anyone if there is a way I can retrieve my files or fix the power manager config files.I tried to reinstal ubunto but, it only alow me to installed on another partition and booth on either one. I want to to create a network share but when I navigate to system>preferences>personal file sharing I can not create a share. The message indicates that the feature is not available because the required package is not installed. I tried to reinstall gnome-user-share and in reinstalled without issue but I still get the same thing. What am I missing? How can I create a network share?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have Ubuntu 9.10 installed on my HP desktop, but I'm running an older version (8.10) on a live CD so I can at least get online to ask for some When I tried to log on earlier it went to a command prompt and said the 'file system check failed' and to run fsck manually. I entered 'sudo fsck' at the prompt and I selected "y" to fix all the bad inodes, when it was complete it told me to restart, I then entered 'sudo restart' at the prompt and it said 'sudo uuid unknown'. I have not installed anything recently and I'm not sure what to do.
