I have two drives in my system with Windows7 installed on the first one (sda) and Ubuntu installed on the second one (sdb). I had to reinstall Windows and now I of course can't access Ubuntu since the MBR was overwritten by the Windows installer.
I followed the LiveCD recovery method described at [url] And it didn't work. When I rebooted after doing a grub-install on sda, I was simply given a Grub command line with no menu or anything. grub-install said it completed successfully and had no errors. What exactly do I need to do to get Grub set up correctly so I can access both OSes?

The installation was successful, but, now when I try to boot Windows nothing happens (apart from an indefinitely blinking '_'). I tried to do startup repair from my Windows 7 DVD but it is not detecting the hard disk. When I tried to run chkdisk /f from the command prompt it said that the disk is write protected. Later, on using diskpart and list volume the only volume detected is the CD/DVD ROM.
The initial GRUB window points to /dev/sda2 for Windows 7. The Volumes snapshot from Disk Utility is attached!Any idea as to how I can recover Windows 7?
I have windows and I installed fedora 12 on a separate partition.
However, I had a problem with my windows XP SP 3 and had to install windows. Which I did on my C drive. However, when I re-boot I on longer get the GRUB loader displayed so cannot boot into fedora.

I'm not able to boot into windows XP after having upgraded to Fedora 15 (from a linux magazine DVD). I just get a perennial flashing cursor with black screen. I have tried leaving it like this for a few minutes to see if anything is happening in the background, but to no avail.There were no issues at all with Fedora 14.The grub.conf file appears to have been modified only to pre-pend the fedora 15 boot option. I have changed nothing else in grub.conf or (windows for that matter).All the Fedora boot options work correctly.I have update everything using yum update.Having read a few posts I am still none the wiser. I append the grub.conf and the output of "fdisk -l". What is Fedora 15 version of grub doing differently, and what has it modified that disables the windows part of the bootloader?

I downloaded Ubuntu 10.10. Initially, I had the problem on the "Who are You" screen and was told that lower case letters were needed. Long story short, I was given a work-around since there was a partition on my hard drive. Ubuntu installed correctly - works just fine. However, upon booting up, if I choose Windows 7, it takes me to Recovery and wants to reinstall factory specs. What's the best way to resolve this? Is going back to factory specs and then reinstalling Ubuntu a viable option? This is brand new computer and I've downloaded nothing - wanted to make sure everything was working fine before I did that - so I would have no problem with doing that.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI had setup my system for triple boot with Windows, F10 & Suse. I had the Windows partition and then installed F10 setting up Grub to load the other two. All went fine and was able to choose to boot to Windows which worked. I then installed Suse, choosing the bootloader to be on the partition for Suse. This installed fine and can now choose to boot into Suse which works. F10 still works as expected, but when I choose to boot Windows, I just end up with a Grub command line. I can't see how the Windows partition could have been affected. I can still see all the files in there, but it just wont boot.

This is not really a Linux issue but does anyone know how I can 'repair' this Windows partition without affecting any other partitions. I don't have a Windows install CD. If I boot off FreeDOS, is there a command to repair the 'bootability' of the Windows partition only?
Is it possible to install a different windows manager?Currently I am using a HP Netbook 210. The windows manager I am using is gnome-shell that comes as default with Fedora 15. However, I am wondering if I could completely remove this and install a different windows manager. For example I would like to try the xfce 4.8.
I am not talking about completely removing Fedora 15 and then installing Fedora 15 xfce spin. Just the window manager.How easy would it be to remove gnome-shell windows manager and then install xfce 4.8 windows manager?
I recently decided to do a dual boot computer running windows 7 and fedora 12. After running disc management in windows 7 and shrinking my main volume down so there was enough unallocated room to install fedora I rebooted and ran the fedora live cd. I then chose the option to install fedora on unused hard drive space.
After all of this I booted up fedora and everything ran great and I have access to all my windows files when I mount that drive. I restarted my computer and tried to boot into windows 7 and ended up with the error "bootmgr is missing press ctrl alt del to restart". Is there any way to recover from this and use windows 7 again?
i specifically told ubuntu to install alongside my operation system (windows) and instead it installed over windows and deleted all the other partitions... i had 200gb of data that i completely lost is there anyway to recover this data?

In the grub loader, I cannot see my Vista boot record.
I thought when installing, I choose 'use free space', as there I reservered 7 gigabyte for Fedora.
I can see all the files including my Windows directories and home.
Is there a possibility that I can recover my Vista? and so, make it dual boot?
I currently have a successful dual boot of XP and Fedora 10. I need to re-format my windows partition and re-install XP. When I use the windows CD, it asks to boot from cd. After installation of Windows XP in the disk where Linux was installed in another partition the GRUB menu allowing to choose operation system to load dissapeared. This menu previously appeared right after switching the computer on. But after installation of Windows in the partition intended for it only WindowsXP is loaded automatically once I switch on my computer. But switching it on with Linux rescure cd-disk results in loading my ordinary Linux from hard drive. This shows that Linux is not destroyed at the loading of Windows, but just made unreachable. Possibly installation program for Windows has destroyed GRUB or some of its files. Does somebody know how to restore normal functioning of GRUB?

I am using Scientific Linux 4, which is derivative of RedHat Enterprise Linux.I have currently installed WindowsXP SP3. But previously I had the same problem with SP2 at the same computer and the same partition. At that time I needed to reinstall the full Linux after installation of Windows. This was not a problem, since this was right after its purchase and there was nothing useful. But recently I needed to re-install Windows, now it is SP3. And unfortunately I have received expected result: Windows have been installed, but it made unreachable Linux. Now I need to find a way to solve the problem with fixing access through GRUB to all systems without reinstallation of Linux, since it will be too time consuming to pass all its adjustments and loading which I need.
Probably the problem is typical and well-known. Grub, Linux in one partition and installation or re-installation of WindowsXP in another partition. How to repire GRUB and entries to all systems after that?
I have a system set up with Fedora 9 - the Fed10 installer choked on an older Intel video chip. I've decided to try updating to 10 in anticipation of further upgrading to 11. Reading this forum and elsewhere convinced me to try preupgrade. I started it and saw Fed10 as an available upgrade path, selected it. At that point, the system appeared to freeze -- the progress bar got about 10% along and everything sat for 10-15minutes. I exited out of preupgrade and tried the rpm path.
That didn't fly either -- I was told that there were no packages marked for upgrade. I read more about preupgrade, including the fact that it might give the appearance of having locked up although it was still working. So I went back to preupgrade. This time, Fed10 didn't show in the selection box. It was, in fact, empty except when I checked the box for beta/unstable and could see Rawhide.
How do I get back to where I was with preupgrade so that I can finish what I started? Alternatively, how can I do a 9 to 10 upgrade from this point (preupgrade grayed out and rpm reporting no packages)? I expect to further upgrade to 11 in a couple of months, so the step to 10 is necessary. I do not have a separate /home partition and I have some very expensive (and difficult to set up) software that insists on sitting in /usr/local, so a full install, though doable, isn't something I want to undertake -- I'd much prefer to do to upgrades from 9.

This question is for people who have already navigated away from their form and lost its contents, but hope there is some way to salvage the situation. My solution was to get a core dump of the process and grep through it, but there might be a layman's way to do it (for example, somehow get Firefox to load the cached version of the previous page). Thus, solutions that only solve the problem in the future, without addressing the present, are off-topic in this question.
I have installed a bad kernel that refuses to boot and there are no other options in the grub menu.But I can boot from the liveCD and fire up a Terminal. So my question is, what commands do I run to mount the /root and /home partitions so that I can copy the bad kernels to /home/username/ and restore the system by updating the kernels to the latest one* ?*: Either by issuing 'yum install kernel kernel-devel kernel-headers perf' at the # prompt or by manually copying the vmlinuz, and initramfs image files from the latest rpms. However, I don't know how to extract files from rpms in general and I don't know where to look in the rpms for the specific files.

Well, when I began to install Ubuntu Linx 9.10 I came to the point of decission of whether or not to delete Windows XP or run Ubuntu 9.10 along with Windows XP. I had a decision to make and I honestly thought I had enough free space to run both. I kept on having problems bringing up Ubuntu. It would go so far and then it would freeze. Well I updated GNOME and I was able to login and try a few things. I of course downloaded and installed the program that I needed to run the program that was running my online radio station. I also downloaded a scanner for to check virusus. I then tried to download some other softwear but I deleted them and kept the scanner and the other program that plays my radio station. Since I did that I logged out and shut down the computer. I haven't been able to get to the point to where I can login again. It freezes. How can I add more memory of free space to run Ubutu. If there is no way of doing that how can I delete Ubuntu and start all over again so that I can again install Ubuntu Linux 9.10 and take off Windows XP so I can run Ubuntu. I really do like the Ubuntu's system. It is so very quick bringing up websites. I have a 32bit download on the CD. I found out the computer was only 16Gbs.

I have provided 2gb space for SWAP partition and remaining for root (/). I have done this manually. Installation was completed, and ubuntu asked me to reboot the system. I did so.
Now comes my problem.......I am getting some DHCP connection or some thing weird.......after that i am getting a message ......and with a message asking me to press any key.....the same thing is coming even after restarting the system....i am unable to see both windows and linux now!

When I get to the "Allocate Drive Space" section, I have only 2 options, namely "Erase and use the entire disk", which alarms me because I want to install UNR alongside Windows XP on my ASUS Eee PC 1005HA. The other option is "Specify partitions manually (advanced)". For obvious reasons, I am reluctant to try this. I have a C Drive (Windows) and a D Drive (mainly for Backup of Windows). Each drive is about 72GB with about 60GB free on my D Drive. Obviously, this is where I would like to install UNR, but will I have to clear my D Drive completely? I still have about 27GB free on my C Drive.
