Fedora Installation :: HTTPD Services Dead - Cannot Resurrect

Since I started using Fedora 10 I can't login as root. Even though the system recognizes the root password when it requires it for certain administrative tasks it refuses to let me login as root.

When I try to edit httpd.conf I get the message "could not save file..." it doesn't even prompt me for the root password. My httpd service is dead and I can't resurrect it, what should I do?

Fedora Installation :: 10 Headless Install With Dead AGP Socket

Mar 9, 2009

I find myself in the strange position of having an old P4 system that I want to throw Fedora 10 on - it's a considerable upgrade from the old 866Mhz P3 that I've been using to do some number crunching on. (It's a personal project, but it's CPU intensive, so the P4 is a welcome upgrade.) My problem with it is that the motherboard's AGP socket is dead, and I can't find a PCI graphics card, so I'm trying to do a totally headless install - I have no idea what errors may be shown, if any. All I know is that whatever I've tried up till now hasn't worked.

1. Remove the hard drive from the P4, stick it into a spare, semi working system (AMD Athlon, RAM isn't working too well), install F10 on the hard drive, remove the drive, put it back into the P4, and let it boot. Results: Nothing. No DHCP announcement, so I don't know if it's done anything.

2. Try a variation of a PXE boot using the vnc parameter. I've copied the instructions here with no luck. Tried it using a nearby mirror (mirror.nus.edu.sg) as well as method=cdrom, with no luck on either. Results: Also nothing.Should I give up on this, or is there anything else I should try?

Fedora Installation :: Dell Inspiron 530 Dead After Bios Upgrade?

Jun 8, 2009

I have a dell inspiron 530 desktop with core 2 quad and 4GB memory, running 32bit vista and 64 bit fedora 10. I searched on the web with "can I install 8GB memory on dell inspiron 530", and got couple of articles that says I only needed a bios upgrade.I downloaded bios version 1.0.18 from dell and run that in Windows to replace bios 1.0.12.After it said upgrade successful and asked me whether I wanted to reboot to have the new bios taking effect, and I said yes. And it shutdown the computer, and never came up Now, when power up, I see nothing, not even the "F2 to setup, F12 to boot menu" message, much less the grub selection. Is there a way to revive the computer?

Red Hat / Fedora :: How To Recover Entry After Installation Of WindowsXP In Another Partition?

Jul 26, 2009

After installation of Windows XP in the disk where Linux was installed in another partition the GRUB menu allowing to choose operation system to load dissapeared. This menu previously appeared right after switching the computer on. But after installation of Windows in the partition intended for it only WindowsXP is loaded automatically once I switch on my computer. But switching it on with Linux rescure cd-disk results in loading my ordinary Linux from hard drive. This shows that Linux is not destroyed at the loading of Windows, but just made unreachable. Possibly installation program for Windows has destroyed GRUB or some of its files. Does somebody know how to restore normal functioning of GRUB?

Details:

I am using Scientific Linux 4, which is derivative of RedHat Enterprise Linux.I have currently installed WindowsXP SP3. But previously I had the same problem with SP2 at the same computer and the same partition. At that time I needed to reinstall the full Linux after installation of Windows. This was not a problem, since this was right after its purchase and there was nothing useful. But recently I needed to re-install Windows, now it is SP3. And unfortunately I have received expected result: Windows have been installed, but it made unreachable Linux. Now I need to find a way to solve the problem with fixing access through GRUB to all systems without reinstallation of Linux, since it will be too time consuming to pass all its adjustments and loading which I need.

Probably the problem is typical and well-known. Grub, Linux in one partition and installation or re-installation of WindowsXP in another partition. How to repire GRUB and entries to all systems after that?

Fedora Installation :: (preupgrade Grayed Out And Rpm Reporting No Packages) - How To Recover

Apr 7, 2009

I have a system set up with Fedora 9 - the Fed10 installer choked on an older Intel video chip. I've decided to try updating to 10 in anticipation of further upgrading to 11. Reading this forum and elsewhere convinced me to try preupgrade. I started it and saw Fed10 as an available upgrade path, selected it. At that point, the system appeared to freeze -- the progress bar got about 10% along and everything sat for 10-15minutes. I exited out of preupgrade and tried the rpm path.

That didn't fly either -- I was told that there were no packages marked for upgrade. I read more about preupgrade, including the fact that it might give the appearance of having locked up although it was still working. So I went back to preupgrade. This time, Fed10 didn't show in the selection box. It was, in fact, empty except when I checked the box for beta/unstable and could see Rawhide.

How do I get back to where I was with preupgrade so that I can finish what I started? Alternatively, how can I do a 9 to 10 upgrade from this point (preupgrade grayed out and rpm reporting no packages)? I expect to further upgrade to 11 in a couple of months, so the step to 10 is necessary. I do not have a separate /home partition and I have some very expensive (and difficult to set up) software that insists on sitting in /usr/local, so a full install, though doable, isn't something I want to undertake -- I'd much prefer to do to upgrades from 9.

Fedora Installation :: How To Recover From A Bad Installation

May 1, 2011

I have installed a bad kernel that refuses to boot and there are no other options in the grub menu. But I can boot from the liveCD and fire up a Terminal. So my question is, what commands do I run to mount the /root and /home partitions so that I can copy the bad kernels to /home/username/ and restore the system by updating the kernels to the latest one* ?*: Either by issuing 'yum install kernel kernel-devel kernel-headers perf' at the # prompt or by manually copying the vmlinuz, and initramfs image files from the latest rpms. However, I don't know how to extract files from rpms in general and I don't know where to look in the rpms for the specific files.

Ubuntu Installation :: Firefox Dead After 9.04 To 9.10 Upgrade

Jan 8, 2010

Did an upgrade today from 9.04 to 9.10. As far as I can tell, everything is working, with the exception of Firefox 3.5.6 with new install. I've attempted an uninstall and install. Tried the following with 3.5.6:URL...I finally found that if I use sudo (or gksudo) I can run firefox at the command prompt. Any other time I run it, it just shows an icon on the lower bar and then it disappears, but within the system monitor it shows Firefox and will show as many as you run the icon with.

I've deleted the entire .mozilla directory, and manually removed all the firefox info fro /usr/bin also before a reinstall. I assume it is either a strange permission issue or some link related issue."which firefox" shows:/usr/bin/firefox and the 3.5.6 files are located /usr/lib/firefox-3.5.6 . Any help would be great, I'm at a loss at this point. I'm sure it's something simple, but it's a royal PITA.I have nxserver on the machine, if that means anything and there was a session locally as well as one remote during the upgrade (using the same account).

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgraded To 9.10 And Now At A Dead Screen?

Jan 12, 2010

I've got a toshiba A135 series. I installed 9.10 from a live cd, and the installation process went fine.

When I rebooted the computer, it loaded up giving me the option to select one of the following:

Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-14-generic
Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-14-generic (recovery mode)
Memory text (memtest86+)
Memory test (memtest86+, serial console 115200)

I chose the first one, hit enter and the computer went to a black screen with the cursor up in the top left corner blinking away. Then nothing. I've read that this distribution is giving folks a lot of trouble. Has anyone had this same thing happen to them after a clean install?

Fedora :: Replacing Dead Disk In Lvm?

Jul 4, 2010

I know that this topic has been posted, responded to, and maybe even resolved, many times here, but I am stuck here with partially dead fileserver and need some pointers.

Problem: one disk drive that was part of a logical volume died. I have a replacement, but I can't get it into the LV and get the LV back up again.

pvcreate --uuid <uuid of dead drive> /dev/sdX1, where /dev/sdX1 is the newly created drive and its partition.
vgcfgrestore VolGroup
vgscan VolGroup
vgchange -ay VolGroup
e2fsck /dev/mapper/VolGroup-LogVol

but, e2fsck can't find a superblock. Apparently this drive is the first in the LV sequence, and it is not formatted as part of the LV.

So how to I get this new disk formatted into the LV without reformatting the entire LV and losing what data I still have?

(FWIW: this is on F11)

Fedora :: F13 - Nxserver - Service Is Dead

Sep 26, 2010

Quote:

When I look the Services panel, nxserver is listed but shows as "Service is Dead". Does this mean anything specifically? Could it be related to firewall or security issues? Right above it a related program to nxserver, nxsensor, is listed and it's shown as operational.

Same thing here in my Services panel. Just getting into using NX...the display seems near Win RDP quality over the home lan. I'm now trying to get the sound to work. What is this 'dummy output' in my Sound preferences and where did my sound cards go? I have one onboard sc and a PCI card, neither recognized via the NX client session. Looking to get ESD going which might be the issue.

Fedora Networking :: Samba NMB - Dead After A Reboot

Feb 8, 2009

I've got a problem with samba and the nmb service. My system boots in Gnome

Ive set up Samba and it works ok, untill I reboot, then I have to go into services and restart Nmb service. the services bit says its dead after a reboot, its running on run levels 2345 I had a few hicups setting it up took me a couple of days to figure out the fire wall and SElinus were blocking things, so I ticked all the samba things - and it works a whole lot better.

I have to admit its a whole lot more polished than last time I tried linux - Red Hat 5. I like the Yum installer it takes a lot of guess work out for us novices, one thing I would like is to be able to edit and open things as root in Gnome or just log into it as root so that you can set things up, but I'll save that question for another day.

Update: I now generated a xorg.conf with system-config-display --noui I manually removed and reinstalled xorg-x11-drv-intel with yum. It didn't work. By the way: now the start hangs on "Starting atd: OK" If I specify "vesa" in xorg.conf, then it gets past the point, but display doesn't load properly.

Fedora :: Service Dead But Subsys Locked

Aug 8, 2011

I have cloned linux installation from USB drive to another. The system is Fedora core and it is used as a software for encoding live stream (it's using PCI encoding cards). The system works well on original hardware configuration, however when I use this cloned flash drive on another hardware configuration one service will not start. It is a "calld" service and it is a service which has a protection which limits its execution to original hardware platform only (mac authentication probably). I need to get this service up, so when I type command "service calld starts/tatus" or "etc/init.d/calld start" I get response "service is dead and subsystems are locked". I tried matching mac address to original hardware configuration but still the same. This is a config file of service /etc/init.d/calld

#!/bin/bash
#
# /etc/rc.d/init.d/calld
#
# Starts the calld
#
# chkconfig: 345 44 56
# description: xxxxxx
# processname: calld

### BEGIN INIT INFO
# Provides: calld
# Required-Start: $syslog $local_fs
# Required-Stop: $syslog $local_fs
# Default-Start: 2 3 4 5
# Default-Stop: 0 1 6
# Short-Description: start and stop calld
# Description: xxxxxx
### END INIT INFO
# Source function library.....

I wonder is it possible to get it up by changing its configuration.
