I have recently found out (also in this forum), that my motherboard is simply put: "junk" (as it fails to see the 8Gigs of ram i have). So i will buy another mobo and would like to hear from you if I should reinstall my ubuntu from scratch or try to just run the same OS as i have now (I know, in the MS world this would mean utter chaos and mobo/processor/ram/everything damage - smoke from the machine etc. So: How safe is it to "hot swap" hardware under Ubuntu?

If I boot from the LiveCD again, and Install again from the LiveCD, will all my installed software still be functional, or will I have to re-install, and repeat everything I have done to build my system to date since my system is on / and is a separate partition?
It seems strange to me that there are so few newsreader programs for Linux that are good for posting binaries, if they do it at all. For a community with such an ethos of sharing, there sure are a lot of "grab"-only newsreaders!

My computer is a netbook with no optical drive. I had a friend bring over an external CD drive to burn the live CD, but I don't have that now. Since then, I've messed up my install beyond easy repair, so I was wondering if there was a simple (or perhaps not so simple) command that would reinstall every package from the software repositories (I do have access to the Internet, just no GUI). Since then, my system doesn't detect its own screen. So I have to escape as the start of reboot and go to a recovery mode and select failsafe screen. Ubuntu then set to lowest graphic mode. It's no way to keep a set up for the long run. I've tried to reinstall Ubuntu from a CD but that doesn't work. .
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am running Ubuntu 10.10 and I have been keeping it updated via update manager.Last night the update manager popped up and I selected to update all required updates without checking what the updates were.While shutting down I noticed that I needed to reboot to complete the update, so I rebooted.After reboot the wireless network card disappeared. So I moved the PC and plugged in the ethernet cable. Oddly sometimes it shows disconnected for no reason and I have to reboot.What's even worst is that Ubuntu now locks up completely within 15 minutes of a reboot.None of the alt+sysrq commands do anything!How do I find out what the updates were and is there any way to I revert my system back to pre updates without having to reinstall?

I cannot sync my ipod touch, I can't play some of my games because they are all meant for windows and wine does not work for then so what I want to do is uninstall ubuntu and reinstall windows xp, then I will reinstall ubuntu and this time around I will make a dual boot. Only one problem, I don't know how to uninstall ubuntu.

So I was messing around trying to uninstall Nibbles and reinstall since I have an issue starting that game and something happened and removed the submenu under Games called "Logic", which had another whole list of games.

I am trying to install a minimalistic centos 5.6 VM.I have pulled the necessary RPMs from the centos website, using the following command:

I do not see any 32 bit packages in the /tmp/transitRPMS directory, which good, and that is is what I expected / want.I have also downloaded the repodata and images directory from one of the CENTOS mirros, from the 5.6 directory.I am using the netinstall CD to kickstart the VM and using my local HTTP repository , which I created using the RPMs pulled from the yumuploader command.When I try to install the VM, after the disks are formatted, the installer starts asking for missing i386 or i686 packages. This is happening in both interactive installs, where I select absolutely no package; and also in the kickstart installs, where I have specified @core for the packages. I am unable to understand this behaviour. It was not so in CENTOS 5.5 x86_64 bit. I do not want to install 32 bit packages on my 64 bit machine.

When I bring the computer back up, Ubuntu will then scan for errors at boot-time and if any errors are found it prompts me to select whether to repair or ignore them. I would much rather have it select the repair option automatically so that I don't have to be physically present.The reason for this is that i have a web server that should come back online automatically after a power loss.

View 2 Replies View RelatedIn my company's production server, there are already mysql, php and httpd packages installed and running. Configurations are already made to the httpd.conf and my.cnf files.
Now I have to upgrade the packages to the latest version. I have to perform a yum update for the whole system first, then reinstall the packages right?
Will this affect the changes made to the configuration files? If yes, how do I upgrade so that the changes are not affected?
1. Make a disk image of my 9.10 system (formatted ext3, btw) on my Syology CS407 NAS so I can do a bare metal restore. Why is this a couple of clicks on my Mac and Windows boxes, but so far not easy on Jaunty? Did I miss something?
2. Drivers. Why can't I just have an automatic wrapper for Windows drivers so I can use any printer or scanner, or a simple point and click driver install for native drivers? I have my ethernet connected Brother MFC-7820N, and the Samsung CLP-315 that runs off my CS407 installed and working on my Jaunty, but it was way more work than expected. What is the easy, automatic or point and click way to install drivers?
3. Graphics drivers. I have decent cards in my big boxes, Nvidia GTX 200 series. But when I get kernel updates, I have to uninstall and reinstall the graphics driver. Is there an easy way to keep this working?
4. Is there one flavor of linux distro that has a really consistent standard for user interface? I like to be able move things around, but do like my menus to be consistent (and do I ever hate the MS ribbon!). I've really only tried Ubuntu.

Note: The reason i installed fedora Is because i dont have a Windows XP Boot cd, and i believe there is a backup somewhere on the hard drive.

I booted up Ubuntu after a couple weeks of downtime. I think it had just installed updates before I shut it down. It seemed fine. I started updating it, then it started giving me a bunch of errors about the root file system being mounted read only, so I had to reboot. I've heard that it does that if the file system is corrupted or there is a hard disk failure. When I rebooted, it kernel panicked on all but the oldest kernel which did a fsck and rebooted. Then I was able to get back in, but most of my panel applets are gone and cannot be restored, it fails to start x at boot with no errors and I have to start it myself from the command line, it is unable to do updates, samba is gone, whenever I update-grub to add Gentoo to the list, it doesn't stay there and the computer is really slow. I have backed up my home folder to another partition. Do you think I will be able to repair it at all or should I just reinstall?

My Ubuntu is on my dev/sda6 partition (I think the swap is on sda7) but when I try to install on that partition I get a question about the root.
How do I install Ubuntu on that partition without messing up my Vista. (I did it wrong on my netbook & had to rebuild the whole computer). I think I can delete partitions, expand vista to take all the free space & then reinstall Ubuntu "side by side" but that seems like the hard way.
I don't know how to select the correct options to reinstall Ubuntu without changing the partitions.
I've recently installed openSUSE 11.3 with GNOME When I was working on desktop settings, it locked itself, and it doesn't accept password I set during installation. I know that password is right, because it worked in YaST.

I just did a Wheezy reinstall (I just started using LVM on LUKS), but my Ralink RT5370 usb wireless adapter wouldn't work, even though I have firmware-ralink installed. When I click on the Network Manager icon, it lists my home network (WPA2 passphrase) as available, but clicking on it yields no result.
Before the system reinstall, I've been using the adapter with firmware-ralink without problems. As far as "apt-get update && apt-get upgrade" goes, my system is up-to-date.
I tried uninstalling and then reinstalling firmware-ralink (rebooted too), but to no avail. The adapter seems to be undamaged.

Is there a way to get a list of all packages installed since install (that are currently on the system) and upon re-install run an application that will automatically install those packages. This would save greatly on initialisation time (the re-set up afterwards). Essentially, I want to re-install and/or move to another machine and want to the new install to reflect the system as it currently stands.

Downloaded ISO, burned disk, tested disc, tried to install, but it fails to recognize old partitions in the prepare space part. Hardware is a 4-system(partition) SSD in RAID 0, with all the bootable systems, and a 4-partition HD in RAID 0 (one disk failing) for data only. How to I get it to recognize a particular partition on the SSD RAID 0 to install over? AND can it reinstall the system software and leave the other stuff as it was installed over 2 years?
