Debian Installation :: Didn't Recognize Ethernet Card
Sep 15, 2010I am a rookie to both Debian and Linux. There is a need of Debian so I just started my experience with the Linux system.
I have installed the Debian squeeze testing version and since when I installed the system it didn't recognize my ethernet card, I could only install what is in the installation CD1. Now I have a nice looking Debian system but very simple with a lot of necessary packages or whatever missing (I don't even have the update manager). Is there some way that I could launch an automatic installation of content in the rest CDs from internet?

Mar 5, 2011Recently I have started using my netbook (Acer Aspire one D250) alot more due to travelling and I noticed that the mic didn't work. Headed to the Ubuntu forums and saw a thread about installing ALSA. So I did and now I have no sound. From what I can tell ubuntu is no longer picking up my sound devices but I'm sure. Hence why I am here. I need to get my sound working again (obviously) and then in turn get my mic working for mumble and other VOIP programs.

Preliminary checks of sound level settings and obvious dumb stuff but there is still no sound. The problem seems to be that the system does not recognize the existence of the sound card and insists on using alternative audio devices.

Jan 13, 2011I'm running slack64 13.1, I don't have KDE installed or any of the KDE libraries (so answers concerning KMix aren't going to help), I'm using xfce4 as the desktop environment. Anyway I just bought a new 4.1 surround sound speaker system from Amadeus and wanted to give it a shot. Obviously my first instinct was to plug them in and give it a whack... much to no one's surprise this didn't work. So I googled my ass off, and it seems for every person that has had a surround sound system, there's a different solution for them. I tried a couple tutorials to end at the same disappointing conclusion: the front two speakers and the subwoofer work. So here's the current situation:
The front two speakers are plugged into the speaker-out port (the green one) and the rear-two speakers are plugged into the line-out port (the light blue one). Since the subwoofer works I'm going to assume it uses the the same line that the front two speakers do. I've turned all the lines all the way up in alsamixer, and made sure it's playing on 4 channel. I reran alsaconf just to make sure and it configured snd-intel8x0 for me with no complaints. I also added a .asoundrc file that looks like this:

Then I ran "speaker-test -c 4 -D surround41 -t wav". Again only the front two speakers play any sound. I'm kinda new to configuring sound, as I've never before had a problem.

After fidiling with some config files, i forget which config thing it is in but there was numerous mentions about where you had to put "options I am already added to the audio group for my computer and running vlc as root does not work (vlc-wrapper) regular won't run as root, i tried that because i have fixed other hardware problems by running programs as root. The laptop is a HP Pavillion dv5-1000 and has a regular sound card and a hdmi port (the sound is configured to play out of the non hdmi one)

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Won't Recognize External Sound Card After Latest Update
Apr 11, 2011I'm running Ubuntu 10.04.
Until yesterday, my Audiophile sound card was working beautifully. I ran the latest update, and now it doesn't show up under Sound Preferences. (When I plugged in a USB headset, that appeared under Sound Preferences and worked just fine.)
The sound card IS listed under aplay -l.

Debian Hardware :: ALSA Won't Recognize Sound Card?
Jan 6, 2011I know sound is a recurring issue around here, but I can't find any posts/FAQs that address my particular problem.
Here it goes: When I first installed ALSA, I unsurprisingly had no sound. OK, no big deal, I'll just un-install and re-install ALSA and see if that helps. No, instead ALSA won't even recognize my card.
lspci shows:

Debian Hardware :: How To Get Squeeze To Recognize Sound Card Again
Aug 27, 2011I've been using Debian 6 on my HP G62-a18SA laptop since March this year. Post installation I was getting sound through the headphones but not through the speakers. To rectify this I followed the instructions at wiki.debian.org/ALSA and installed the Realtek HD Audio Codec Driver, cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec having revealed that the audio codec was a Realtek ID 270. This gave me sound through both headphones and speakers. A couple of days ago (after not using the laptop for several weeks), I was surprised to find that I had no sound at all, nothing from the speakers and nothing from the headphones. I have done some googling and here are the outputs from several commands I came across, from which it would appear that Debian has now "lost" my soundcard:

Fedora :: Kernels From 2.6.28 Onwards Will Not Recognize Sound Card
Jun 5, 2010Fedora-13 will not play sound. It's definitely a kernel issue and I am not the only one from what I read elsewhere. Prior to kernel 2.6.28 audio works on this Samsung Q1 Tablet PC. Any kernels from 2.6.28 onwards will not recognize my sound card and therefore won't play sound no matter what. I've proved it running different livecds (Suse, Mandriva, PCLOS, etc.) with kernels 2.6.25, 2.6.27, etc., all with audio. How can I use/import a suitable kernel for Fedora-13 so that it will recognize my sound card (driver snd-hda-intel) on this Q1?

Aug 3, 2010I was just using the mic and watched it stop working suddenly. I was in the middle of a skype test call when the graphical mixer level died down to zero in the middle of the call. When the test call was played back, the first part sounded fine then the sound got lower until it became inaudible. Since then I can't get any sound from my mic in skype.
Also, the audio input level graphically shown in Sound Preferences shows no fluctuations in sound as it used to before. The input device is enabled. I tried using Sound Recorder to record some sound clips and that worked fine. So the mic is working but Sound Preferences and Skype seem to have the mic level really low. I'm not sure what else to think considering it was working perfectly a few minutes ago. I've tried restarting, but that didn't fix it either.
Ubuntu :: Why Didn't Files Get Found
Mar 12, 2010I was seaching for a particular file (WAV) and using Applications>Places>Search for files resulted in finding none of the files I was supposed to haveHowever I then used Gnome Do and bingo there was one of them, then used the "reveal" option and there were all my files.Does anyone know why the ubuntu file search facility could not find them , but the Gnome Do could? By the way in the system search facility I sued *.wav and found other wav files, and then used DA* (DA being the first two letters of the file) and found all sorts of data labeled files etc, but none of the ones I was looking for. In 'Gnome Do' I typed 'DA' and there it was. I would really like to know the answer for future reference.

Dec 24, 2010I have a dual boot with Win XP which I rarely use. I went into XP and used a program which became unresponsive, so I ALT CTRL DEL to get into Task manager and tried to end the process. Anyway the computer froze and I had to do a hard shutdown (with the power button). Now XP will only boot to Safe mode. If I try to go into normal mode it just goes to the XP screen before login and shows and endless bar timer. I am afraid to use my XP disc to repair XP as I might lose my Ubuntu partition. How do I safely fix XP?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Sound With New Sound Card - Web Browser Is Unable To Play Any Sound
Mar 24, 2010After installing an external sound card, Im having some weird issues. The cards chipset is fully supported by suse, (CM8738) so I dont think thats the problem. Besides, I'm getting sound, but not in some applications. The system's sounds work just fine (login, logout themes) amarok plays without any problems, kaffeine, mplayer they all work flawlessly, in fact I can see the difference in quality between the onboard sound and my new card. However, no web browser is able to play any sound at all, firefox, opera or chrome, nothing,zip. Plus, vlc cant reproduce sound either, nor can smplayer.
I've tried switching channels on and off(muting)in kmixer and in alsamixer, on the console, with no results. I disabled the onboard audio on the bios before installing the new card, however my ati video card has integrated sound, which I cant disable.... I used to get this exact same problem randomly with the onboard sound, but I just had to go to kmixer and turn up the "pcm" channel volume, which was set to 0, and I had sound again on my browser. However this card's pcm channel is at max and turning it up or down affects the whole systems volume, not just the browser's. Is it better to just reinstall the sound system, if so how could I do that.

Ubuntu :: Graphics Card Didn't Work
Feb 11, 2011My laptop is an HP Pavilion dv6 3078-tx. It is was a great laptop when it was running windows 7 but when I tried installing Ubuntu, I slowly began to hate it more and more. The issue is with the ATI and Intel switchable graphics card. Ubuntu installs fine and things seem to be great but I cant use the better graphics effects in ubuntu. I installed the driver that ubuntu provides for ATI and it didnt work and ubuntu booted into a terminal etc.. and I had to put it back to the way it was before. After sometime researching on the internet I know the problem is with the swtichable graphics.
Unfortunatley there is no option to turn off switchable graphic in my bios and hp arent much of a help. I dont know what to do now ? Is there any way to get switchable graphics to w ork with linux, is there way to get version of the bios that lets me disable it ? any variations of ubuntu or linux that it works with. I would prefer to use the ATI if i have to disable one or the other cause Im usually running on ac power anyways.
Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 Install Didn't Complete
May 24, 2011I just installed ubuntu 11.04 (64-bit) on my system. I mounted / on my SSD and /home on my HD. The installation proceeded for a while and then I suddenly got a message that the installer crashed. Nevertheless the installed linux seems to work and I can boot in Ubuntu. Not sure what exactly is wrong now that the install didn't complete. Any way for me to check what went wrong and what exactly I can do to make sure my system is ok? All appears ok but appearances can be deceiving.
