I'm using a system which is based around 9.04 and yes I know this is not the latest and greatest however the softwares in question hasn't been confirmed on the newest version of ubuntu. However I was doing a new build and noticed when I went to do and apt-get install there didn't appear to be any repo's I'm just wondering have the repo's for 9.04 been turned off??
View 6 Repliesi'm attempting to know and understand fedora more and i will spend probably the next month pouring through all the forums and documents to answer more of my own questions. but there's quite a bit here, so i'd thought i'd ask some noob questions to get me started a little.
ive installed fedora 14 64bit and chosen only kde as the desktop. i selected an extra 2 repos besides the default, fedora 14 -x86_64 and fedora 14-x86_64 -updates. i believe this kernel is installed: 2.6.35.11-83
1. i can only see the 2 extra repo's as being "checked" in kpackagekit, shouldn't i see the default repo also ?
2. i dont have an applet in the system tray indicating the system is up to date, does fedora have this by default ? also after a clean install i ran yum check-update and yum update but the message sayes: "no packages marked for update". i'm not sure if the system is auto-updated during install or not, but with other distros iv tried there is always atleast a few updates needing to be done after install.
3. is kpackagekit the fedora gui package manager ? i dont see any others.
4. i want to upgrade to nvidia drivers, but i think i am missing a non-free repo or something. when i enter: yum install kmod-nvidia xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs.i686 xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs.x86_64 i get messages stating "no package" i get the same message with yum install nvidia-settings.i also tried this: LANG=C yum --enablerepo=rpmfusion-nonfree info akmod-nvidia but it sayes repo not found.
I would like to post my problems here with Fedora 11 regarding that I am using Dell inspiron 1525, Dual core-N series. I have got two problems:
First;- After I updated my system, I have experienced a a login problem , which is each time I try to login and insert my password correctly it seems that it will login but it comes back to the same login screen as if I did not do anything, but after too many times it works.
Second: I read some posts in a website that talks about configuring the RPM fusion "Repo" and I did all the steps posted there , but after that whenever I try to update or download anything through terminal.... it appears the following:

I just installed ubuntu 11.04 (64-bit) on my system. I mounted / on my SSD and /home on my HD. The installation proceeded for a while and then I suddenly got a message that the installer crashed. Nevertheless the installed linux seems to work and I can boot in Ubuntu. Not sure what exactly is wrong now that the install didn't complete. Any way for me to check what went wrong and what exactly I can do to make sure my system is ok? All appears ok but appearances can be deceiving.

I installed Fedora 15 on a primary partition and expected the install to create a partition boot sector, but it didn't. Did I do something wrong or is this not supported?
View 13 Replies View Relatedi installed ubuntu desktop 11.04 on my acer aspire one 751h and found that the wifi didnt work. the netbook remix was the same so i went through all the previous releases up until 8.0.4.4 which worked fine on the live cd. so i tried to install but the installer didnt see my main hard drives only the usb i was using to install. so i tried using wubi installer which only left me with this screen when i tried to load up ubuntu.

I need a bit of clarification. I've been using Debian based OSes. I just want to make sure that I understand how to install software using Fedora.
While I had the Live DVD desktop running I downloaded the Google Chrome .rpm pack to the download file, right clicked on the .rpm and opened with the archive manager. The archive manager came up and showed me a file folder, the a popup came up on it's own and ask if I wanted to install, clicked yes and every thing from there worked, Chrome was installed and worked. When I tryied to download the plugin for Google and do the same as before, the install popup didn't come up. This is the part where I made a mistake, I went to the download folder and double clicked on the .rpm and the install popup came up, and I installed. This some how messed up the Live desktop to the point that I had to reboot, shut down didn't even work right.
I should have opened the folder the archive manager placed the .rpm and then double clicked on the .rpm to install instead of within the dowload folder.
I aslo read up on how to use rpm -i filename From the terminal can I Or does the .rpm package have to be in the correct folder before installing?
Also from the live dvd I tried using sudo rpm -i , but got a warning and said I would be reported.
i have openssh on my box with kubuntu 10.10, i didn't install it and would like to know it's purpose being on here

It is still showing an upgrade to 8.10. I have been waiting to upgrade while exploring and using the 8.04 LTS Hardy. Now that it has been released it isn't showing on the update manager.

I already enter the manual partition editor sectin, but the list show that my harddisk has no parition no it. The weird thing is that i can normally access my partition on ubuntu live-cd's file browser, but it didn't appear on my installation wizard. Here is a screenshot of my desktop:

If I disable the repo-non-oss repository the update works fine. The URL I have for the repo-non-oss repository is:

This has been going on for over a week. Do I need to use a different URL for the non-oss repository? I live in New York, United States.
I just installed Debian and when it was almost done it asked me something about GRUB installtation. It said the only loader in the main boot loader file or something was Vista but I don't even have vista installed on my laptop. It didnt list my Ubuntu or Windows 7 installation so I picked to set the boot location (or whatever) manually to (hd0,2) .. just to be save. Now when starting up the computer it only gives me Ubuntu and Windows 7 as options. Ubuntu starts but when I try to start Windows 7 it gets stuck at the 'starting windows' logo. Another thing I wasn't sure about in the installation was the format of the partition.. I just picked Ext4 (I read somewhere it was good ).
I installed the thing on an empty Logical partition (not primary.. couldn't figure out how to do that without formatting my disks). I wish to get my W7 back up and the Debian to show up in my boot list.. Right now I can only access my Ubuntu so you'll have to guide me through here
and I've been using windows alone until now. There is something I don't quite understand in ubuntu and that is where do you install programs (something similar to the Program Files folder in Windows perhaps) and is there something similar to registry, because I installed JDK from a downloaded binary and when I installed Netbeans it didn't see the Java installation, and where exactly are the system files?

Sound, wireless modem, processor speed scaling, sound controls, touch pad, all cores running,power management, battery, fans, etc. NVidia driver is also working. I tried multiple other distro installs - opensuse, Fedora, and ubuntu 10.04 - none worked. Also tried upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10 which didn't work either. also tried upgrading to 2.6.35 kernel which didn't work either.
I'm running a toshiba satellite a505-6030 with an i7 core, nvidia graphics gforce 310M. i didn't have to pass any arguments to grub either . First boot seemed to stall, rebooted machine, and it's been working perfectly since.

I remember I tried to boot Ubuntu Netbook Edition LiveCD once, but I had a problem with 3D graphics, and a result I couldn't see the menu panels, etc. So, I was wondering, will the same thing happen with Natty, since they are both Unity? Or will they improve support for graphics in 11.04?

I've been using Ubuntu and Mint for a few years now, and I want to try Linux on my HP Stream7 Tablet. I was very excited to learn that Debian 8.0 and later has support for 32 bit UEFI on 64 bit Processors and went ahead and installed the multiarch version of 8.2. It works, but I have no GUI (Just a command line) and no WIFI connection. It seems the GUI didn't install and the WiFi card is not supported. I have found a driver for the wifi card but don't know how to install this driver. URL....

You'll probably need to log out and back in again for the profile scripts to add the KDE3 stuff to your $PATH and $XDG_CONFIG_DIRS. When you log back in, KDE3 should start when you run X. Unlike LXDE, this install didn't automatically create a menu entry for gdm. Everything seems to be right, but I can't get the gdm entries I've tried to work. Could somebody who has also installed 3.5.10 kindly post the correct file contents?
I have just install both fedora 12 and slackware 13 on my laptop I did not install lilo because fedora uses grub I am able to use slackware by using the the DVD and booting from the command prompt I have attached my grub .conf file also when i boot from cd the command is as follows

I just installed Debian, after having some experience as a Ubuntu and Mint user. I'm not sure if this is normal, but my installation didn't include neither 'make' nor ' gcc', which I thought were very basic programs. They where in the cd though, I installed them through apt. I realized that they weren't there when I tried to install the drivers for a D Link DWA 525 wireless card. I was able to install the drivers on Ubuntu, but I can't do it on Debian. When I try to 'make' it, there is an error. I don't recall the exact error (since I have to reboot back and forth in order to get internet access, I won't post it right now).
