Fedora :: Kernels From 2.6.28 Onwards Will Not Recognize Sound Card
Jun 5, 2010
Fedora-13 will not play sound. It's definitely a kernel issue and I am not the only one from what I read elsewhere. Prior to kernel 2.6.28 audio works on this Samsung Q1 Tablet PC. Any kernels from 2.6.28 onwards will not recognize my sound card and therefore won't play sound no matter what. I've proved it running different livecds (Suse, Mandriva, PCLOS, etc.) with kernels 2.6.25, 2.6.27, etc., all with audio. How can I use/import a suitable kernel for Fedora-13 so that it will recognize my sound card (driver snd-hda-intel) on this Q1?

New Ubuntu installation with a big problem: no sound.
OS: Ubuntu 10.4.1
Hardware: HP Pavilion Elite e9150t (64 bit)
Sound card: Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio
Preliminary checks of sound level settings and obvious dumb stuff but there is still no sound. The problem seems to be that the system does not recognize the existence of the sound card and insists on using alternative audio devices.

I messed with some settings (not exactly sure what I did) while trying to get a USB headset to work, and now I have no sound at all. It's acting like it doesn't recognize any soundcard (I'm using a Thinkpad W510 with integrated sound).

I know sound is a recurring issue around here, but I can't find any posts/FAQs that address my particular problem.
Here it goes: When I first installed ALSA, I unsurprisingly had no sound. OK, no big deal, I'll just un-install and re-install ALSA and see if that helps. No, instead ALSA won't even recognize my card.
lspci shows:
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset High Definition Audio (rev 05)
alsactl init gives:
alsactl: init:1743: No soundcards found...
alsamixer:
cannot open mixer: No such device or address
aplay -l:
aplay: device_list:235: no soundcards found...

I've been using Debian 6 on my HP G62-a18SA laptop since March this year. Post installation I was getting sound through the headphones but not through the speakers. To rectify this I followed the instructions at wiki.debian.org/ALSA and installed the Realtek HD Audio Codec Driver, cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec having revealed that the audio codec was a Realtek ID 270. This gave me sound through both headphones and speakers. A couple of days ago (after not using the laptop for several weeks), I was surprised to find that I had no sound at all, nothing from the speakers and nothing from the headphones. I have done some googling and here are the outputs from several commands I came across, from which it would appear that Debian has now "lost" my soundcard:
marrea@debian:~$ lspci | grep -i audio
00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA) (rev 40)
01:05.1 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc RS880 Audio Device [Radeon HD 4200]
marrea@debian:~$ cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec
cat: /proc/asound/card0/codec#*: No such file or directory
alsactl init
alsactl: init:1743: No soundcards found.....
Unfortunately I am pretty clueless where Linux sound is concerned and was wondering as to how I can get Debian to "find" my soundcard again.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04.
Until yesterday, my Audiophile sound card was working beautifully. I ran the latest update, and now it doesn't show up under Sound Preferences. (When I plugged in a USB headset, that appeared under Sound Preferences and worked just fine.)
The sound card IS listed under aplay -l.
Code:
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Audiophile192 [M Audio Audiophile192], device 0: ICE1724 [ICE1724]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
[Code]....
If I run Alsamixer from the terminal, the correct Audiophile sound card is the one shown.

I'm running Fedora 12 x86_64 Gnome and my video card is an ATI Radeon HD 3650. I'm using the open source video driver. After updating the kernel to version 2.6.32.9-70, my LCD display has started being too bright, which makes it barely readable. The problem is still there after upgrading to kernel 2.6.32.10-90. I've even tried to boot a live USB of Fedora 13 Alpha (desktop-x86_64-20100404.17.iso - downloaded from here - which ships with kernel 2.6.33.1-19)

I've just installed F13 on Acer Aspire 5551G with has Broadcom BCM57780 ethernet card. And F13 does not recognize this card: in System > Administration > Network Devices tab is empty (but in Hardware tab the card is listed). So, I can't connect to the Internet
So far I've found:
1) Related bug for F11.
2) Related thread for F12.
I've tried all possible solutions mentioned in both the bug and the thread, but nothing could convince my F13 to like the ethernet card.

My soundcard (a Creative X-Fi Xtreme Music) is running with the unix-driver offered by Creative. But after a restart (without switching power off) I have to switch the sound device in xmms from ALSA to OSS. Also my tv card (an hybrid card from Hauppauge, WIN-TV HVR-1300) is only getting a signal after a restart, before there is no signal found. To get sound while watching tv I'm using one of the following lines, it seems to be random wich of them is working without error:
> sox -r 48000 -c 2 -t ossdsp /dev/dsp1 -t ossdsp /dev/dsp
> sox -r 48000 -c 2 -t ossdsp /dev/dsp -t ossdsp /dev/dsp1
So it looks like a problem in loading the modules in correct order, but I'm not sure. Perhaps there is also a problem with my nvidia graphic card (see list below for the kind of card), that I have installed with the unix-drivers from nvidia's webpage. To solve this problem I'm now searching since september, when I got my new computer, including:
-graphics: Lead896 D3 X GTX260 Extreme+
-CPU: Intel Core2Duo E8500, 3166 MHz, FSB 775
-mainboard: Asus P5Q-E, P45 F G SA

My PC has the ASUS P7H55-M SI motherboard with the audio chipset VIA VT1708S. Under Fedora 13 (64-bit) I have no sound although the audio chipset seems to be properly recognised and supported by the OS.
I used the alsmixer application and I set the volume for all channels, including PCM to their maximum value but still I get no sound. When the OS boots I hear a "click" sound coming from the audio chipset when it is initialised by the kernel but then the sound stops and I hear nothing.
Note that I do not have this problem with Ubuntu 10.04 but I have the same issue with openSUSE 11.3 Milestone 7. My guess is that F13 and openSUSE 11.3 having newer kernel/alsa software versions exhibit this problem due to some bug introduced to the code.
Here is some extra information:
aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 1: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: VT1708S Analog [VT1708S Analog]

I've been using the instructions on the Wiki to compile audio drivers for the Macbook Pro 5,3, and it has worked for a while. But I tried doing the same thing with kernels 2.6.31-17 and 2.6.31-18, but it seems to have no effect: alsamixer only shows one channel (Master) which does nothing, just like a fresh install. Does anyone have updated instructions for these kernels?

After installing an external sound card, Im having some weird issues. The cards chipset is fully supported by suse, (CM8738) so I dont think thats the problem. Besides, I'm getting sound, but not in some applications. The system's sounds work just fine (login, logout themes) amarok plays without any problems, kaffeine, mplayer they all work flawlessly, in fact I can see the difference in quality between the onboard sound and my new card. However, no web browser is able to play any sound at all, firefox, opera or chrome, nothing, zip. Plus, vlc cant reproduce sound either, nor can smplayer.
I've tried switching channels on and off(muting)in kmixer and in alsamixer, on the console, with no results. I disabled the onboard audio on the bios before installing the new card, however my ati video card has integrated sound, which I cant disable.... I used to get this exact same problem randomly with the onboard sound, but I just had to go to kmixer and turn up the "pcm" channel volume, which was set to 0, and I had sound again on my browser. However this card's pcm channel is at max and turning it up or down affects the whole systems volume, not just the browser's. Is it better to just reinstall the sound system, if so how could I do that.

I've followed the steps outlined in the Fedora FAQ regarding sound issues. I am attempting to play some MP3 files using RhythmBox, and there's no sound. I have dug a bit deeper. I've tried alsamixer, and when I press F6 (Select Sound Card), I see three entries:
- (default)
0 HDA Intel
1 HDA NVidia
I have tried selecting a different sound card. When I select 1, I see this text: "This sound device does not have any controls". I have an NVidia GeForce 480 video card, but it has been suggested to me that I don't want to use it for sound. My speakers are in my monitor. I would assume that has ramifications on how I set things up for sound within Fedora. I have used some kind of sound test utility by executing this at the command prompt:
"speaker-test -c 2 -t wav".
I hear nothing. I don't know what to do next. If anyone can IM with me using Pidgin, that would be perfect

I just closed another issue about an unrecognized USB C-Media headset, because the issue seems to be deeper... On an Asus Eee 1001p running Fedora 13, I've run lspci | grep -c audio, which returns 0.
Running alsa-info.sh --no-upload I get a report that tells me that there are no soundcards... Pulseaudio is running though. Also, if I use VirtualBox the sound works fine there (including my USB headset).
I used to have sound, and I'm not sure how it disappeared. I really don't know where to start with this, it's been a pain in the ass all week.

everytime i use alsamixer command i get only the "Master" volume control, and i see the card its using is "Pulseaudio" so i press f6 to select the sound card and i found that i have "default" and "HDA SIS966" so i wanted to know how can i change that "default" to the HDA SIS966?.i tried pressing f6 and selecting the card but when i close alsamixer and run it again i get the "default" sound card again.
i left some pics, the 1st one is what i get when i run alsamixer, the 2nd is the options i got when i try to change the sound card, and the third is what i get with the card HDA SIS966 which is the one i'm trying to get as my default.

I have an ongoing problem in trying to get Audio and video streaming to work with any version of Ubuntu.
Definition of problem: Playing any of the past library of BBC programs either Audio or Video will lock Firefox. Clicking o play a live stream from radio or TV would lock Firefox.
Only resolution was to force quit: Often re-booting Ubuntu would enable the player to work. SOmetimes this needed 4 or 5 re-boots before it would play. Then for no apparent reason it would stop and the cycle would repeat.
I have chased down dozens of threads and tried countless solutuions none of which has worked.
I upgraded to Karmic with similar results. I use the iPlayer a lot, not for downloading just for online streaming and this is causing me untold frustration.
My last upgrade was to Lucid and finally I thought it was cracked as everything seemed to run fine. I run a very trim system with very few installed programs, but within the past few weeks the iPlayer has stopped working pretty much altogether. It will play live stream audio, so fine for listening to the radio as I work, but trying to play any library programs whether audio or video and I'm back to a locked Firefox. I really am at a total loss on where to go with this and I find myself booting more and more into Windows 7 just to be able to function the way I want.
Ubuntu 64 Lucid, AMD Athlon 64 x2 4600+

My wife is reluctant to move from WinXP so I started my own personal campain to promote fedora at home but my wife complains that I "spend too much time fidling with the thing(PC)" and that "it wasn't the case with WinXP" so I =was looking for ways to impress my wife with fedora's capabilities so I flashed her with compiz and dual screen using our old 52" projection tv as a DVR but rhe problem is that my daughter want to watch her DVDs and my wife want to watch a ..... video.I have a system with two Sound card one embedded on the main board and one on a PCI slot and what I am trying to achive is haveing two applications, like two instances of VLC play their sound on the souncard I select per instance, or one Sound card playing VLC and the other playing a ..... video's sound.
I have looked at pulse audio properties and it detects both of my sound cards just fine and it plays wonderfully on either but that is just it... it will pay on either but not both.I have read that you can configure pulse audio to use your second sound card as sorround or duplicate audio but the idea is dicrete audio from dicrete application. Is there such an use case already supported by pulseaudio? So there might be a solution if I disable Pulse Audio but I rather not but I'm open to either.
