Jun 26, 2010
i was installing Ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop. But when the installer reach step 4, i cannot see my partitions on my computer that i has previously made. I already enter the manual partition editor sectin, but the list show that my harddisk has no parition no it. The weird thing is that i can normally access my partition on ubuntu live-cd's file browser, but it didn't appear on my installation wizard. Here is a screenshot of my desktop:

I just installed Debian and when it was almost done it asked me something about GRUB installtation. It said the only loader in the main boot loader file or something was Vista but I don't even have vista installed on my laptop. It didnt list my Ubuntu or Windows 7 installation so I picked to set the boot location (or whatever) manually to (hd0,2) .. just to be save. Now when starting up the computer it only gives me Ubuntu and Windows 7 as options. Ubuntu starts but when I try to start Windows 7 it gets stuck at the 'starting windows' logo. Another thing I wasn't sure about in the installation was the format of the partition.. I just picked Ext4 (I read somewhere it was good ).
I installed the thing on an empty Logical partition (not primary.. couldn't figure out how to do that without formatting my disks). I wish to get my W7 back up and the Debian to show up in my boot list.. Right now I can only access my Ubuntu so you'll have to guide me through here

I have successfully installed Fedora 11. It works fine with no problem what so ever. My problem is that while using F10 I have created a separate partition for "home". I tried to use the same /home partition for F11 but it did not work. how to achieve this and at what state of the installation.

I have been upgrading from 9.04 to 10.04. Now, I want to install 10.10 from the beginning without losing the data in my current partitions but when I run the Maverick installer it recognize my disk as a whole with no partitions. From another posts, I suspect that the problem is in the partition list because it seems to be a duplicate partition but don't know how to fix it. This is the fdisk output:
Code:
jgarcia@jgarcia-laptop:~$ sudo fdisk -lu /dev/sda
Disco /dev/sda: 250.1 GB, 250059350016 bytes

When is the 10.04 upgrade going to show on my update manager? I have been running the update manager since yesterday and the 10.04 upgrade hasn't shown up yet. It is still showing an upgrade to 8.10. I have been waiting to upgrade while exploring and using the 8.04 LTS Hardy. Now that it has been released it isn't showing on the update manager.

I just installed ubuntu 11.04 (64-bit) on my system. I mounted / on my SSD and /home on my HD. The installation proceeded for a while and then I suddenly got a message that the installer crashed. Nevertheless the installed linux seems to work and I can boot in Ubuntu. Not sure what exactly is wrong now that the install didn't complete. Any way for me to check what went wrong and what exactly I can do to make sure my system is ok? All appears ok but appearances can be deceiving.

and I've been using windows alone until now. There is something I don't quite understand in ubuntu and that is where do you install programs (something similar to the Program Files folder in Windows perhaps) and is there something similar to registry, because I installed JDK from a downloaded binary and when I installed Netbeans it didn't see the Java installation, and where exactly are the system files?

Wow -everything works with alpha-3 version with a fresh install. Sound, wireless modem, processor speed scaling, sound controls, touch pad, all cores running, power management, battery, fans, etc. NVidia driver is also working. I tried multiple other distro installs - opensuse, Fedora, and ubuntu 10.04 - none worked. Also tried upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10 which didn't work either. also tried upgrading to 2.6.35 kernel which didn't work either.
I'm running a toshiba satellite a505-6030 with an i7 core, nvidia graphics gforce 310M. i didn't have to pass any arguments to grub either . First boot seemed to stall, rebooted machine, and it's been working perfectly since.

I am newbie in Linux and Ubuntu. Need qualified help I've installed Ubuntu on my first drive. And I have Windows 7 on second drive. At the begining the problem was that GRUB2 didn't see Win7 loader. I red GRUB2 manual and find solution which says to add some text to the file /etc/grub.d/40_custom. So I did this and here is my 40_custom content:
Code:

I remember I tried to boot Ubuntu Netbook Edition LiveCD once, but I had a problem with 3D graphics, and a result I couldn't see the menu panels, etc. So, I was wondering, will the same thing happen with Natty, since they are both Unity? Or will they improve support for graphics in 11.04?

I have an old external 20GB HD formatted with NTFS. It used to be able to mount in Ubuntu just fine. One day I copied a huge file into it, then suddenly it failed to mount. Initially the message was something like the following:
Code:

Failed to read NTFS $Bitmap: Input/output error
NTFS is either inconsistent, or there is a hardware fault, or it's a

As you can see the above list doesn't contain /dev/sdb. But when I plug the external HD, the connection light always turns green. If possible I want to save the data and reformat it into NTFS again, but in order to do that at least I have to get /dev/sdb enlisted don't I ?

Basically, I don't want to see my dual booted xp boot. At all. Yes, I want GRUB to see it, so I can chose, but I would love to have it completely ignored once I load Ubuntu even for intruders. I did not like being able to just click my Windows partition thinking of the brutal things that could be done to it since it's not even booted.I am aware I can make a second user who has admin privileges, but that is similar to my other question...

And I would rather it not be accessible to anyone with or without administrator privileges.

I just installed Debian, after having some experience as a Ubuntu and Mint user. I'm not sure if this is normal, but my installation didn't include neither 'make' nor ' gcc', which I thought were very basic programs. They where in the cd though, I installed them through apt. I realized that they weren't there when I tried to install the drivers for a D Link DWA 525 wireless card. I was able to install the drivers on Ubuntu, but I can't do it on Debian. When I try to 'make' it, there is an error. I don't recall the exact error (since I have to reboot back and forth in order to get internet access, I won't post it right now).

I am a rookie to both Debian and Linux. There is a need of Debian so I just started my experience with the Linux system.
I have installed the Debian squeeze testing version and since when I installed the system it didn't recognize my ethernet card, I could only install what is in the installation CD1. Now I have a nice looking Debian system but very simple with a lot of necessary packages or whatever missing (I don't even have the update manager). Is there some way that I could launch an automatic installation of content in the rest CDs from internet?

I installed Fedora 11 on a server with 2 equal sized disks. I used the gui installer and didn't make custom setting changes to the partitions. One of the steps asked for me to choose the disks i wanted to use for this installation. I selected both disks and after the installation Fedora only sees one volume the size of both disks combined.Do I now have software raid0 or do I have something else?

When I firsts installed Ubuntu 10.04, and tried to hook it up to my wireless network it noticed my connection and accepted my password, but did not connect. My wireless card doesn't have linux drivers installed. I found the correct drivers, but I am unsure of the correct way to install them in Windows so they work in Ubuntu. I am currently dual booting Windows 7 and Ubuntu.

I installed openSUSE today using a network installer cd, opting for the Xfce environment. Everything went smooth with the installer, but I have some issues with the network. After the fresh install, nm-applet did not start. I got the following error:
Code:
nm-applet
** Message: applet now removed from the notification area
** Message: applet now embedded in the notification area
** (nm-applet:14981): WARNING **: Fallback icon 'gtk-dialog-error' missing: (0) Icon 'gtk-dialog-error' not present in theme
**
ERROR:applet.c:2800:nma_icons_reload: assertion failed: (applet->fallback_icon) Aborted I don't know if the problem was with the applet or with the daemon. Fortunately I used Archlinux for a quite long time and I know how to connect to WPA2 encrypted wireless network from command line, so I was able to connect to the internet and do an upgrade - everything went just smooth and fine again.
After the update and restart, I found the nm-applet icon in the system tray. And here comes the second problem: I can connect with the nm-applet, but the connection does lasts only for about 10 seconds. So practically I can't use the net this way either. Ok, no problem, I fired up Yast, disabled the networkmanager and choose to start my network with the traditional method. I entered the required stuff from my wireless card ( ESSID and passwd ), set to activate at boot time and reboot.....

I have been running Ubuntu with no problems for a while now. Earlier today, I began to download some updates. When I came back to the computer, there was a prompt to restart, but also an error message. I didn't catch the error message until I had clicked the restart button. Now, when I try to access Ubuntu from the dual-boot menu (I run Vista as well), I keep getting the following error message.
[3.190034] Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unkown-block (8,2).I tried safe mode, and I got the same error message. Vista runs normally.

While trying to Make the driver source I receive errors of missing libraries. Is the hostap driver included in the Centos Kernel? I tried with insmod hostap but it didn't work..? Is there a kernel patch with the hostap drivers? I will be glad if someone can give me ideas or directions for setting up the driver properly.

I have a brand new thinkpad X301 with 4GB of RAM and thinking of getting fedora 11 on it. The plan is to have it triple boot with vista/seven and hopefully OSx86. I am aware of the 4 primary partitions limit on an MBR disk. I was thinking of having a swap file instead of swap partition and not creating a boot partition as well. If I install the boot loader(GRUB?) on the root partition will I be able to boot it without any problems by using vista's boot loader?
Or Maybe I should install GRUB on the MBR and add all the other operating systems on it? Does anyone have any objections for not creating a swap partition or a boot partition? When comes to desktop environment I've been using KDE in the past, is there any major advantage of using Gnome over it? KDE seems to look really nice on fedora where Gnome is maybe more stable?
