Does Linux have a good driver for Brother Printers?
I am about to use Ubuntu Netbook and Ubuntu Studio. The Printer is about two years old.
During installation of Ubuntu 10.04, there was no driver found for my Brother MFC-665CW printer/scanner. However, I recently learned on the Forum that there is a printer driver available for the MFC-665CW through Synaptic that can be accessed by searching on printer name. I got it, and it works great. I've not been successful in locating a driver for the scanner part of the MFC-665CW. Does anyone know if there is a driver available on Synaptic that will work for the scanner on a MFC-665CW, and if so how to get to it (i.e., what to search on to locate it)?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm a little shaky on how network/shared printing actually works, so maybe I'm asking for the impossible. I have a Windows (XP) box that has several shared printers. I would like to be able to install drivers/modify printer options so that any Ubuntu box attempting to print to them doesn't need to have the printer driver installed locally. Why don't I just go through the UI like everybody else, selecting the make and model, etc.? Well, It's a long story, but the short of it is that at the end of the day, I need to be able to add a printer using
lpadmin -p MySharedPrinter -v smb://host/sharedprintername .... without specifying a ppd file, and print to shared printers.
Is this possible? I managed to do this with a network printer (a printer hooked directly to the network via an ethernet cable, not going through a print server), but I'm not even sure why that was possible in the first place. If there is a good explanation out there for how to do this or why it's not possible, I haven't been able to find it.
Anybody else using this printer? I have tried the driver direct from Brother, requires cups and the driver. Both installed, both fail. I read on another forum to try a Brother HCL type and it works, but why?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just installed Maverick 64-bit on my new Satellite AMD 4-core laptop. I've run into an issue with the fact that Brother does not have a 64-bit driver for my Multi-Function Laser printer. They recommend force installing the 32-bit driver. I have made sure that all the 32-bit library and all the folders exist per Brothers instructions. However, I'm confused on what command I need to type in the terminal window to actually do the install. Can someone recommend the proper command to force install the 32-bit driver? Or should I download the source code and compile? I don't know the proper method for compiling a 64-bit driver either.

I went to Brother Solutions Center : Brother Driver for Linux Distributions and downloaded the drivers provided by Brother.

How could we prompt the developers to update openSUSE so that these working drivers can be added into Yast to benefit future users.
I do not know much about Ubintu...My bro put it on my computer. I'm trying to connect a new Brother MFC-7340 to the computer but cannot get the drivers to install, as I do not understand how to even check the version of Ubuntu that I have.
View 1 Replies View RelatedPurchased a brother dcp-7030 laser printer after reading very positive web review/forum comments stating drivers were available from brother site. Unable to install cupswrapper driver successfully. Created /usr/share/cups/model directory as directed (and also a /usr/share/cups/dcp-7030 directory in case I hadn't quite understood the instructions) and then installed cupswrapper brother progs via synaptic. Cannot find a 7030 driver to install. Tried installing the driver from the brother site, but after downloading the .deb version and trying to install it, I get a wrong architecture msg. Checked and I have the 32 bit dependencies installed, which the brother site states are required.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI've been using Kubuntu 9.10 for several months now. For most of that time, I configured and used with no problem several network printers.. a HP LaserJet 3015 at home connected to a Windows machine, and a Xerox Phaser 8560 at my coworking space connected directly to a router.
However, several weeks ago I was at the coworking space, requested a print from my web browser, and in the printer selection dialog, observed the list of printers expanding... some sort of autodetection of network printers was occuring, and multiple instances of the same printer were being offered, with slightly different names. Printing to these devices did not work.
Now, after a reboot, there are NO network printers available no matter what network I'm connected to. When I use the Kubuntu printer configuration tool and try to set up a new printer, it asks me to "Select a connection" to which the only option it gives me is "Other". When I put in an address for the printer it just cycles endlessly, never finding anything.
I would like to know if anybody using Squeeze has gotten the DCP-8065 driver from the Brother website to work. I am running x64 and have followed the directions precisely (ia32-libs, etc.) but still no dice. I have been using the ubuntu version (brother-cups-wrapper-laser & its dependencies) and that works fine. I just want to know if anybody has gotten this to work and what they did that may have been different from the directions given.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a shared printer on my Ubuntu 10.04 machine, and it cannot be seen by other computers (macbook, pc) on the network. I have the printer shared, but it is not a member of the 'Shared Printers' group. When I add it to the 'Shared Printers' group, it stays there until I close the 'Printing' application GUI. Then, when I re-open 'Printing,' it is no longer in that group. I think this is why I can't see it on the network, due to the wording of the option in Server Settings to 'Publish shared printers connected to this system.'

How would I go about adding printers to Ubuntu that are not there by default? I have access to a collection of PPD's where at least one of them is not in Ubuntu by default. Is this something that is done at the kernel level?

Is there something that needs to be installed to have USB Printer support? USB is the standard connection type of most printers theses days and only high end printers have Ethernet and I don't think any modern printer still uses a parallel or serial port.
