Ubuntu :: Using Shared Windows Printers Without Local Driver

Mar 3, 2011

I'm a little shaky on how network/shared printing actually works, so maybe I'm asking for the impossible. I have a Windows (XP) box that has several shared printers. I would like to be able to install drivers/modify printer options so that any Ubuntu box attempting to print to them doesn't need to have the printer driver installed locally. Why don't I just go through the UI like everybody else, selecting the make and model, etc.? Well, It's a long story, but the short of it is that at the end of the day, I need to be able to add a printer using

lpadmin -p MySharedPrinter -v smb://host/sharedprintername .... without specifying a ppd file, and print to shared printers.

Is this possible? I managed to do this with a network printer (a printer hooked directly to the network via an ethernet cable, not going through a print server), but I'm not even sure why that was possible in the first place. If there is a good explanation out there for how to do this or why it's not possible, I haven't been able to find it.

Ubuntu :: Printers Do Not Save In 'Shared Printers' Group?

Oct 9, 2010

I have a shared printer on my Ubuntu 10.04 machine, and it cannot be seen by other computers (macbook, pc) on the network. I have the printer shared, but it is not a member of the 'Shared Printers' group. When I add it to the 'Shared Printers' group, it stays there until I close the 'Printing' application GUI. Then, when I re-open 'Printing,' it is no longer in that group. I think this is why I can't see it on the network, due to the wording of the option in Server Settings to 'Publish shared printers connected to this system.'

Fedora :: HPLib - Enable Publish Shared Printers

Feb 21, 2010

I'm using FC 11 and HP deskjet F2480. the last general update completely upset my printer settings and I can no longer use my printer at all. According to HPlib diagnostics I need to enable publish shared printers which I've dome. But it persists that the printer is not publised.

This is the second time a general update has messed up my printer setting, the time before I managed to fix by reinstalling HPLib. But this time it refuses with the message 'gs (GhostScript - PostScript and PDF language interpreter and previewer)', but I have the latest version of gs already installed.

All it shows is the remote printers on my file server.So, opened up a web browser and when to localhost:631 and used the cups interface to add a virtual pdf printer, but still it does not show up in the printing dialog.

Networking :: Samba Shared Printer: Install The Driver In A Windows Host?

Oct 20, 2010

I have found that there are certain things on the web that I need to print, that simply refuse to work under linux. I have a samba printer server on one of my Slackware boxes and an M$ XP vm under Vbox that can access the server and see the printer. The only problem that I have is that it expects to download a driver from the server which isn't available and the HP driver installer won't install if it doesn't detect the printer. Short of relocating the printer to install the driver, does anyone know how to get the driver installed on the XP host? This is so much easier with my Slack boxes and CUPS!

Ubuntu :: Autodetection Of Network Printers Makes All Printers Disappear?

Jan 28, 2010

I've been using Kubuntu 9.10 for several months now. For most of that time, I configured and used with no problem several network printers.. a HP LaserJet 3015 at home connected to a Windows machine, and a Xerox Phaser 8560 at my coworking space connected directly to a router.

However, several weeks ago I was at the coworking space, requested a print from my web browser, and in the printer selection dialog, observed the list of printers expanding... some sort of autodetection of network printers was occuring, and multiple instances of the same printer were being offered, with slightly different names. Printing to these devices did not work.

Now, after a reboot, there are NO network printers available no matter what network I'm connected to. When I use the Kubuntu printer configuration tool and try to set up a new printer, it asks me to "Select a connection" to which the only option it gives me is "Other". When I put in an address for the printer it just cycles endlessly, never finding anything.

Ubuntu Networking :: Windows Can't See The CUPS Printers

Jun 18, 2010

I recently had to reinstall Ubuntu (due to a crash after an update) and I'm having trouble to configure the print server. The last time all I had to do was to follow this:

- System;
- Printing;
- Server;

[code]....

Then I would go to the Windows box and add the printer like this:

[URL]

And it would work perfectly. Now I've been tweaking everything I can imagine and no luck.

Fedora :: Creating Local Shared Directory

Dec 18, 2009

I have recently installed Fedora 12 on a desktop PC and as my first experience of Linux, I am really impressed. I have now installed several packages and have reached a point where I would like to share the PC with other user (family members in the same house).My question seems so basic I am almost embarrassed to ask it but could some one explain the best way to create a local shared directory that could be used to store files accessible to everyone (e.g. music, photos, videos, documents etc.)There will be three users and as it is a family PC, they will all have full access.

Reading posts from various forums, I am little confused about what is the best way to proceed (i.e. what is Linux best practice). The simpler of the two methods is to simply make the directory using the mkdir command, followed by the chmod command to assign full access rights. Fore example if the local shared directory is called 'share'. The alternative approach assigns a group, a group administrator etc and then adds users to the group.

Red Hat :: Push / Pull Windows Printers To Redhat Cups?

Apr 21, 2010

I would like to know if it is possible to push or pull all Windows printers (about 1000) to Redhat Advanced Server? I know normally Samba comes into play, but there i can only make connection to 1 printer at the time. Also, I must then add the printers from the Windows Print Cluster by hand. Considering the huge amount of work AND the manageable aspects ( you will then have the printers on two servers), this is not an option.

So, can I connect from the RedHat server directly to the Windows Print cluster, or, if not, at least load all printers in the CUPS configuration at once? Then I have at least connection. It's a Windows 2003 R2 print cluster with RedHat 5.3 Advanced Server. Eventually the RedHat environment will be a cluster.

OpenSUSE Network :: Setting Up 11.3 To Access Printers On Windows Server 2003 Via Samba?

Sep 7, 2010

I'm trying to set my openSUSE desktop up to use the printers on my office network via Samba. I managed to get it working in 11.2 but 11.3 is giving me some trouble.I am able to access the printers and use them but I have to enter my network credentials each time I print. In 11.2 I was able to "save" my username/password and was not required to do this. Are there any Samba packages I need to add in addition to the basic ones? There seems to be a lack of documentation on this particular subject, most is concerning Windows clients printing on Linux print servers.

Ubuntu :: Cant Access Windows Shared Network?

It never used to do this, in fact when i went to places the network was not called "network", it was my own title. i can connect to the server with the ip address, but that only lets me take files from the windows network, and not the other way around. I really have two issues

1. cannot place files on the network from my ubuntu laptop
2. cannot connect to shared folder network from places like i could before

Ubuntu Networking :: 11 Shared Folders That Mac And Windows Can See?

May 20, 2011

I have set up a shared folder on my Ubuntu computer and I want everyone on the network to be able to see and use those folders, whether they have Ubuntu, Mac OSX or Windows XP. So far, I am able to view some Mac computers on the network and see the Windows network too - from Ubuntu. However, I am not able to see the Ubuntu computer on Mac or Windows yet. I think I should be trying to use Samba, but I am not sure how. I used

Code:
sudo smbpasswd -a [user]

to set up a password but I am not sure where to go in Windows or in Mac. Can anyone who is good in those systems tell me how I can see and hook up to my Ubuntu computer on the same network?

On this helpful page [URL]... I got as far as the last step and realized here:

Quote:

If you are still unable to access the shared folder, check that the folder sharing service is running on the Ubuntu computer:

Press System → Administration → Services

Find the Folder sharing service (samba) and ensure that the checkbox next to it is checked

Press Close

I don't have a "Services" icon in my Administration drop down menu!
