I cannot find a driver for the Brother MFC-490CW printer anywhere. I tried using the CD that came with the printer itself but that doesnt have any PPD files on there... Apparently they deemed it unthinkable that a Linux user might want to use their equipment.

Friend got a Brother HL-2130 Printer and couldn't add printer using Yast as the drivers are not found by Yast.
I went to Brother Solutions Center : Brother Driver for Linux Distributions and downloaded the drivers provided by Brother.
rpm -ivh *.rpm
and everything works well.
How could we prompt the developers to update openSUSE so that these working drivers can be added into Yast to benefit future users.

I have bought a BrotherHL-1110 laser printer. But there is no driver on my system. I have downloaded source code but don't understand how to compile it. (
It does only exist driver-packages for 32 bits: hl1110cupswrapper-3.0.1-1.i386.deb and hl1110lpr-3.0.1-1.i386.deb)
My system is:
Release 7.8 (wheezy) 64-bit
Kernel Linux 3.2.0-4-amd64
GNOME 3.4.2
AMD Athlon(tm) II X2 245 Processor × 2
The source code contain the following files:
-> pwd
/home/joe/Desktop/BrotherHL-1110/hl1110cupswrapper-GPL_src-3.0.1-1
-> ls -R
.:
brcupsconfig Copying filter PPD
[Code] ....
How do I compile and install it on my computer ? ( Or get the printer working ? )

This site has drivers for my new Brother HL-3040CN laser printer ... but it says its the wrong architecture when I try to open the first one with GDebi Package Installer. I'm kind of stuck now ...should I try just plugging the printer into the computer with the network cable and seeing if Ubuntu will automatically take care of drivers? For reference I saw this topic when I googled the issue [URL] This site says 64 bit drivers are available for Ubuntu 9.10, only 32 bit drivers are available for Ubuntu 10.04. I am running 10.04 (64bit) ... should I return the printer?

I had it printing until the last cups upgrade. Brother support thinks it is something to do with the upgrade. We did a reinstall of the printer driver. The printer works on Virtual Box and the scanner works on Ubuntu, but not the printer. What do I need to have the printer work under 11.04?

I upgraded from Karmic to Lucid RC a couple of days ago and have been trying to work through a few problems since. One of these problems is printing with my Brother DCP506CN printer which was working in Karmic. However, I just can't seem to get it going in Lucid. I have followed the Brother linux install procedure, which worked for the the last few Ubuntu releases, but not for this one it seems.

I have a Brother MFC-240C inkjet printer & scanner. On installation of Maverick Meerkat v. 10.10, my scanner function failed. I added the same line into the file as for Lucid Lynx v. 10.04 and the scanner has scanned perfectly. The lines Brother gives are for the following file: Ubuntu 9.10, 10.04
1. Open "/lib/udev/rules.d/40-libsane.rules" file.
2. Add the following two lines to the end of the device list. (Before the line "# The following rule will disable ..."):
# Brother scanners
ATTRS{idVendor}=="04f9", ENV{libsane_matched}="yes"
above is found at: [URL]

Don't know where this should go, so I put it here for starters! I want to print documents on both sides of an A4 sheet, using a Brother HL-1230 printer. Is there a way of getting the odd numbered pages out first (then a pause?) and the even numbered pages after? To do this manually is tedious on a long (14 page) doc. Way back in the days of that other op. sys. I had a program (WordPerfect?) Whose printer driver would do this. Is there one for Ubuntu?

I have just installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on my AMD 64 bit desktop. I have a usb connection for my Brother MFC 8860DN printer. I used the synaptic package manager to install the printer drivers ubuntu already had in their repository for my printer model. When I connect my printer to the computer Ubuntu recognizes the model, but cannot detect the printer drivers I have already installed. The printer drivers were installed to /usr where a Brother folder was created. the Cupswrapper and lpd files are in the Brother folder. How can I get the system to detect its own files so I can get the printer to work?

I recently re-installed lucid on a computer which had a working ethernet printer queue, to a Brother MFC-5490cn. I installed the drivers from the ubuntu package archive and set up two printer queues, one for "dnssd://<ip-address>" and the other "lpd://<ip-address>/BINARY_P1". The first appears to recognize that the printer color ink is low, so perhaps there is some communication, but nothing ever comes out of the printer. The second queue appears to fail completely.
I vaguely recall that for my previous installation I used the package supplied by Brother, but that it was very difficult, since the package no longer matched the Ubuntu file layout and locations.

I have a Brother DCP585CW and have installed the drivers from Brother and it worked fine on Ubuntu 9.10 on both my desktop and laptop. I have installed 10.04 on both and now the problem. It works fine on the desktop but I get a problem on the laptop. It is a wireless printer and I can print to it but only after I do 2 things each time I reboot the laptop. I have to configure it through cups (http://localhost:631) because it keeps getting set to being connected via USB and letter rather than A4 paper on each boot but the correct setting is:
Code:
Description:DCP585CW Location:Landing Driver:Brother DCP-585CW CUPS v1.1 (color)
Connection:lpd://192.168.1.66/binary_p1 Defaults:job-sheets=none, none media=adobe_A4_8.125x11.5139in
I also have to correct it via System/Administration/Printing and setting A4 and setting it to the default.

As I have recently figured out, it is very hard to set-up a Brother MFC-J415w wireless printer on a 64 bit machine, so to save you from spending hours searching the Internet and trying different drivers, I will tell you how to set one up.
Step one: Download the 32-bit driver from this link: http://welcome.solutions.brother.com...html#MFC-J415W. When prompted, save the file.
Step two: Open the terminal and type in the following commands:
Code:
mkdir /usr/lib/cups
Code:
mkdir /usr/lib/cups/filter
Code:
mkdir /usr/share/cups/model
Depending on what you've tried before, some of these directories may already exist. Step three: Type the following commands:
Code:
sudo -s
[code].....

I'm trying to get a Brother HL-2040 printer working, without much success. I installed the brother-cups driver, but that didn't work. When I try to print, the printer just shoots out blank pages, and the only way I can stop it is by unplugging the printer. Worked OK on Ubuntu 10.10. I have gnome fallback, if that matters. There's a post saying that I need to download a ppd file, [URL] but when I try to get it, it opens a page instead of downloading a file. Also the information is from 2008, and I don't know how well that will work with all the changes that have been made to Ubuntu and the newer kernel. I got lucky! went to: [URL] and got the .deb files for the lpr driver and the cups driver. Had to use sudo dpkg -i in the terminal, as I couldn't get the software GUI to work. But it prints.

I need to direction here: my laptop (F10 gnome) is cat5 dhcp connected to a dlink 524 router with IP 192.168.150.1. This in turn is connected to an arris modem with ip 216... Local IP is 192.168.100.1 (default). It works, connects to internet, supplies dhcp address to dlink. All this is upstairs in my ham room upstairs. My wifes laptop downstairs usually connects wirelessly to the dlink, and hence to the arris. Also works to the internet. There is a linksys (ddwrt software) running as a wireless repeater also located downstair, with box ip 192.168.1.1.
It is "joined" to the dlink router via wireless, hence it function, wireless repeater. It works, I have used it like this many time. However, I cannot seem to get a connection to the Brother printer (which has a print server function). It is connected to the linksys repeater via a lan cable. Gets an ip via dhcp. I think it should work, since my wife can connect to the linksys repeater, either wireless or wired, and surf the internet thru the dlink router via the repeater-dlink wireless repeater link. I must be missing something obscure (to me, at least).

After a fresh installation of F15, my Brother HL-2030 printer does not work anymore (means it worked fine with previous Fedora versions). As usual, I downloaded the proprietary drivers from the Brother home-page [1] and installed them. Then, I configured the driver in my browser ('localhost:631'). The printer was correctly recognised (connection via USB). Printing the test page worked fine, but now, as usual user and as root, too, I am not able to print for example with Abiword, Gedit, Sylpheed and other applications.
Strangely, using Firefox, I am able to print for example the Fedora forum or Distrowatch homepage, or some on-line newspaper articles, but I am not able to print a local HTML page (for example [2]). Furthermore, when trying to print a document in Abiword or Sylpheed, the printer warms up, but it does not print. I've attached '/var/log/cups/error_log' (LogLevel debug). (The 'HL2030' diver was added automatically, and I removed it because it did not find any PPD file. The correct printer is called 'brother_hl-2030'.)

I cannot modify my printer in Cups. In the past when I wanted to add a printer, or modify an installed printer, I clicked on the Admin tab, and I get a prompt to enter a password. I never get the prompt to enter user - root and the root password. So I can not add a printer, or modify one that is installed. My Brother HL-2040 is still working, I can print jobs O.K. it will not print test page. Why do I care? I want to have a better understanding of the location on the lpr and cupswrapper drivers on this system.
I have installed Slackware 13.1 on a second drive, and am trying to convert to that system. In 13.1 cups asks me for Admin user and password, I can enter root + password, and add a printer, and Mandy used to. However, in 13.1 after converting the .rpm files to .tgz files and installing them with pkgtool, I can not 'see' the lpr or cupswrapper driver in 13.1. I wanted to see what it looked like in Mandriva, however I can't and don't know why.

I have a Brother MFC3360C printer that I would like to use. Has anyone had any success getting this printer working.? I've had it working on Fedora and Mandriva in the past but haven't been able to get it going on slackware. Printer setup recognizes it correctly but It's not in the list of available drivers for it and Brother only has 32 bit drivers for Deb and .rpm on their website, no 64bit.

I'm trying to install Brother DL-5250DN laser network printer. I have read the manual at [URL] and also I have searched the forum but I didn't find a solution yet. The problem is that I don't know what is the printer type that I have to select. None of the description really match for this printer. It is a printer which is directly connected to the network and *not* to a Linux or Windows machine. The only type that matches is AppSocket/HP JetDirect. I tried to cinfigure it with CUPS but it doesn't work. After I type the password nothing happens.
