General :: Put Windows Xp In The GRUB Boot Command For Mint?

Apr 3, 2010

I have Microsoft Windows Xp installed on my Primary Drive C: and I had a Mint boot disc that I would pop in and load from. Well I got tired of this disc and installed a new hard drive in my computer so I could use Mint as a secondary OS. Everything went good in the install, and I put Mint on the second drive. But when I boot my computer the GRUB menu only shows Linux Helena Mint 8 to load from and no Xp. Xp is still currently installed on the computer in the Primary drive, but how do I inlcude it in the GRUB boot menu or boot it at all?

General :: Run A Command With The 'at' Scheduler In Mint 9?

Jul 12, 2010

I'm trying to run a command with the 'at' scheduler in Linux Mint 9. It's basically a ssh connection to my Smoothwall firewall to tell it to shut down, but that part isn't really important. The problem I have is that I can't get the 'at' schedule command to do much. I can type commands into the terminal and they work perfectly. If I enter exactly the same command into 'at' nothing happens.

For example, I can type 'plink -load smoothwall' into a terminal and a new ssh terminal comes up asking for my password to make an ssh connection. If I create an 'at' job with the same command, ie:

Code:
$ at now + 5 minutes
at> plink -load smoothwall
at> <Ctrl-d>
$

then nothing at all happens when the 5 minutes are up. I've checked that the job exists by doing an 'atq' command. Obviously there's something about 'at' that I don't understand. I've googled, I've looked in this forum and I've looked in a copy of 'The Linux Bible 2010' all without success. I've tried various alternative ways of entering the command for a couple of hours and I'm still stuck.

Software :: Unable To Boot Into GRUB Loader: GRUB Command Shell Boots Up?

Sep 2, 2009

A failed upgrade, from disk images, of Fedora 10 to 11 resulted in no GRUB bootloader main menu appearing on bootup (no WIN, no LINUX choices from which to boot). I am booted directly into the GRUB command shell...so, no WIN, no LINUX, nothing. And my understanding of GRUB shell commands is very low.I have 2 hard disks, WIN on the first, LINUX on the second. I believe GRUB Bootloader is on the first disk.Sadly, I have no external install media.An old grub.conf hardcopy indicates that root =/dev/sdb2, root (hd1,0), kernel /vmlinuz....olderversion...(relative to /boot),initrd /initrd...olderversion... (relative to boot). and WINDOWS on (hd0,1), with chainloader +1

I need to somehow get past this grub shell, and re-install/re-instate the grub bootloader, so it can boot normally.What grub command(s) must I use? I've played around with the commands, but with no success.I worry that if I can't resolve this, the whole machine may be useless.

General :: Cannot Install Grub,unable To Boot Windows 7?

May 31, 2010

Two days ago i turned on my pc and suddenly there was a message:"Minimal Bash-like line editing is supported.For the first word,TAB lists possible command completions.Anywhere else TAB lists the possible completions of a device/filename.ESC any time exists...

When i googled this message it came out that this has got to do with linux (i have never used linux and i formated my disc once or twice since i bought it so i found it very strange that this problem is related to linux).Anyway,i found out that grub is the problem and that it isnt a big deal to solve it.I downloaded Ubuntu,booted it from the cd and followed the instructions...I typed in grub (in the terminal) and it told me to download it so i typed in "get-apt grub install" or something like that and it all went well,i was now in the grub directory.Then i typed " find /boot/grub/stage1" and it told me that the file was not found.

I have tried everything,i have downloaded the super rescue cd the fix the problem but i have still the same problem.

General :: Incorporate Windows Boot Loader Into Grub?

Oct 23, 2010

I have triple booted Windows XP (195 GB)partition 0? the second partition is Windows 7 (195 GB)And the rest of a 1TB hard drive went to Open Suse 11.3. if it makes any difference I used g parted to create the three partitions and made them all primary. My problem is I want to change the way they all get along. When I boot up, I get the options;

Desktop -- openSUSE 11.3-2.6.34-12
Failsafe -- openSUSE 11.3-2.6.34-12
windows 1
windows 2

which is fine, but clicking on windows 1 takes me to the windows boot loader with the options of windows 7, or previous version of windows. clicking on windows 2 brings up a screen telling me " rootnoverify (hd0,1) chainloader +1 BOOTMGR is missing press ctrl+alt+del to restart" I would like the end result to be windows 1=XP,windows 2=7, then I can rename them accordingly. one more thing, when I installed openSUSE, I let it automatically configure the hard drive and create the necessary partitions(it deleted partition 3 first). i remember it saying somewhere that the boot manager was past the 125 GB limit, and might not boot.

General :: Windows XP Won't Boot With Grub After Installing Ubuntu 8.04?

Jul 8, 2009

I am completely new to Linux as of today.I finally took the plunge and downloaded and installed Ubuntu 8.04 on my Windows XP computer (dual boot), using the Ubuntu installation wizard to "make room" on my hard drive for Ubuntu by creating a separate partition. The installation finished successfully and Linux boots just fine, but Windows XP will no longer boot at all.

I have read many threads on this and other sites, giving advice of how to correct this problem. I am not at all experienced in editing and working with different ways of booting (other than Windows default). But after some frustration, I located (according to the threads) a couple places to try making changes to the boot commands and I tried various lists that were suggested. Before I changed anything, the Windows XP boot screen would appear and then it would revert right back to Grub.

[code]....

what drive number Ubuntu and/or Grub installed to, or assigned to the Windows partition, and I have no idea how to find out. I do not have a Windows XP installation CD (it came pre-installed on my computer), so I CANNOT wipe out that partition and simply reinstall it--I MUST be able to fix the problem without harming Windows!!! I also have data in the Windows partition that I don't want to lose. I could possibly uninstall and reinstall Ubuntu (as I saw suggested somewhere online), but I have not the slightest clue how to accomplish that task--and WHAT IF it didn't work?

I was able to reinstall the Grub bootloader using an Ubuntu Live CD, which appeared to fix the problem, but the next time I loaded Windows 7 and rebooted, the problem reappeared I think the problem is that Windows 7, for whatever reason, is somehow removing or disabling Grub.
