Updating my kernel corrupted grub preventing me from booting. Running the grub shell to restore the primary stage bootloader, restored bootability. It is important to note, that several months ago, I had a similar failure that corrupted the MBR.Are there any Linux based tools to check an HD for sanity? By the latter I am not only understanding software integrity but also hardware sanity.
Recently, every time I try to compile an app from its source code, after issuing the ./configure command I get this message:configure: error: C preprocessor "/lib/cpp" fails sanity checkSee `config.log' for more details.I check /lib/cpp but there is not directory named /cpp under /libthis problem occurs on all source packages.
Keep receiving the following error message when i try to compile any code: Code: checking how to run the C++ preprocessor... /lib/cpp configure: error: C++ preprocessor "/lib/cpp" fails sanity check logs test out some code with the C preprocessor and fail, thereby failing the "sanity check" I reinstalled cpp, but to no avail.

yesterday i tried to install bt4 from alongside ubuntu 10.04. Unfortunately the DVD had some errors and the installation stopped. Everything was fine till then, even the GRUB was working(i guess!) but when i tried to log into my Ubuntu it gave me an error... " /usr/lib/libgconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with error status 256" also there was a popup like "gnome power management was not properly installed ....blah blah blah Contact you network admin"
i have only one user on that system. i tried the single user mode but no success... i then tried to Ctrl+Alt+F1-F6 no success... can't switch to command line(this is my display problem i guess)
i have now decided to install a fresh install but i do need to take the backup. What all should i copy to the new install so that i get the same feel as before?

We have installed vmware tools (open-vm-tools) on Ubuntu Hardy which is comaptible with the ESX 4.1. The packages are installed adding a repo.
deb [URL] main restricted
The Ubuntu VM is presently running on ESX 3.5, we will soon upgrade it to 4.0. How can I confirm which version of vmware-tools is running on the Guest Ubuntu VM? When we upgrade to new ESX version, the vmtools must be intact.
I'm very new to Linux, i'm running Ubuntu and i'm trying to install a program. In the instructions it says "Check that you ARE NOT root, never run similar tools as root! just change file permissions". How do i check if i'm root or what am I supposed to do here?
This package contains tools to manage Debian based XEN virtual servers.
Using the scripts you can easily create fully configured Xen guest domains (domU) which can be listed, updated, or copied easily.
Homepage: [url] in the above output I am getting a line Conffiles and then you can see a series of /etc what are that and is it an error or some conflict?
I'm looking to install a Linux distro on my Windows 7 machine. Could anyone suggest any tools to handle the multiboot? (I may install 2-3 distros to try out)
If there are more tools that can be used to add users and groups, can someone direct me on how to find this information out, or can someone compile a list of tools?
I just need to ask about any existing tool in linux which can show us the CPU memory and swap utilizations of overall system for particular time duration and generate graphs.?i m a student of computer science and want this information of resource utilization for my project..kindly reply if any of u liux fans knows about such tools.
I installed Ubuntu 10.10 to dual-boot with XP Home on my Asus 1005HA netbook. The main hard drive is an OCZ Vertex 2 SSD. I've tried all the common tools for accessing the Ubuntu partition from inside XP, but none of them appears to work. Ext2IFS didn't let me assign drive letters - in fact, it doesn't seem to detect the Ubuntu partition at all. The Ext2IFS config tool in Control Panel looks like this (the SSD is 120 GB, and the Linux partition is 10GB as I recall):
explore2fs doesn't even start. Linux Reader can't open any drive, including flash drives and external HDDs.
I can't think of anything irregular about my system except the SSD. Could that be it?
I have Ubuntu 10.04 running gnome and two monitors. I am wondering if a can get a better multi-monitor configuration tool. The one I have, gnome-display-properties, has too many problems, including: When I swapped my monitors over, the narrower (external) one now on the left. There is a width calculation error, such that I have a virtual monitor the width of the wide-monitor on the narrow-monitor and part of the wide monitor. And a virtual narrow-monitor on the remainder of the wide-monitor. Also the visible mouse pointer does is not aligned with the active spot, an x offset of one monitor width. I would like, in approximate order of importance:

What are the default tools used by most distributions? This includes, embedded distros, BSD's systems, Unix-like...I'm asking this because nowadays distributions come with more and more software. But as far as I know "binutils", "bash", "grep", "ed" and "awk" are standards. What are the standards utilities to start learning that are most cross-platform [i.e.: the "shells", "services", "editors" and others].

I am interested in kernel configuration and compilation, so I have executed ltib and menuconfig, but I am not sure to understand what is the difference between Linux Target Image Builder and the Menuconfig tool? Is menuconfig used by or included in ltib? I understand that both tools generate a kernel, But I guess ltib can process "something more"? (packages/target selection? )
