I searched and found several solution but those are distro specific. I need to find out if distro is running in live mode (from CD, USB) instead it's installed on hdisk. The solution should be independent of distribution.

Everyone is wondering why we can't run gEdit and other tools from a terminal by logging in as root(e.g"su-"), I understand that by making changes they are trying to force us as users of Linux to learn better habits that are more secure, but the issues are driving people nuts!
I for one really like being able to log as root and open gEdit to make drive changes without having to login as root, I would normally still have access to all my things like email etc. So changing Linux to force everyone to not use tools like gEdit as root is becoming more of an inconvenience than they realize, there must be a safe way to do this!

I had a version of wine prior of 1.2 (I think it was 1.0.1) installed in my Ubuntu 9.04 operating system and decided to upgrade to version 1.2 I checked some forums on the net and one of them recommended to remove wine using the following command in terminal sudo apt-get remove wine then I should remove the .wine folder in my home directory rm -rf .wine and finallly the said I had to remove the wine entry in the Applications menu, so I did by going to System--->Preferences--->Main Menu After following these instructions, I installed version 1.2 without any problems but now I see that under Applications--->Wine I lost the entry for the Programs --> Accessories ---> Notepad feature (please take a look of the screenshot)Did I do something wrong?I asked this same question in the Wine Forum, and they said I had to ask Ubuntu team about this issue since Wine by itself does not install any menu entries for its own build-in programs

Most of my gnome system administration tools are (suddenly) failing to open. The system is a new installation with both KDE and gnome, and the gnome system admin tools were working fine, but now they fail silently (nothing even in .xsession-errors). For instance, if I select Synaptic Package manager from the menu, I will get the gksu prompt to enter my administrative password, which I do. Then a notification will appear in the Taskbar "Granting Rights" and then after that nothing happens, it just fails silently. Note that this also happens if I enter 'gksu synaptic' or 'gksu /usr/sbin/synaptic' at the alt-F2 command line. Note that it doesn't seem to matter whether I check "Save Password for Session" or not. The same happens for time-admin, users-admin, etc. I have tried reinstalling gnome-system-tools, system-tools-backends, and gnome-keyring with no effect. I have googled extensively and have found a few other people with this same problem, but no solutions. Note also that kdesu does still work fine, and there doesn't seem to be any such problems in KDE in general. Only in gnome and with gksu.
P.S. Let me know if you need any more info (output from commands, files, etc).
I installed Fedora Core 13 x86-64 from the installation DVD and picked the "Software Development" installation. I notice that the Applications->System Tools menu doesn't have "File Browser" on it.
Nautilus is installed, so I can create a launcher for it. I'm merely curious whether this is a change or bug in FC 13? Or should I suspect that I myself deleted the file browser launcher accidentally? The machine is a laptop and I find the mousepad awkward to use.
