I have been using VMware Player for some time to host Fedora VMware images on Windows XP. I have been using Fedora 11 and 12 (both 32 and 64 bit) and recently started to use Fedora 13.
I use as a base the images provided by thoughtpolice. http://www.thoughtpolice.co.uk/
I usually install VMware tools and also keep the images updated (yum update) which sometimes changes the kernel.
I have recently had problems with the snapshots not having a network when I restore them. So far I don't have the problem with Fedora 11 and do have it with Fedora 12 (but used not to). I do have it with Fedora 13.
In each case the problem goes away when I uninstall the VMware tools and comes back when I install them again.
One of the symptoms is that SElinux complains about not being able to do something with /var/run/vmware-active-nics.
It looks to me that something is incorrect in the actions being taken when the snapshot is being restored. It does not happen every time and sometimes the network restores itself.
The network can be restored by rebooting the image.

I am currently running a 64-bit Fedora 14 server which hosts a game server, a voice server, and remote desktop functionality, each on a distinct TCP port. I am currently using the built-in firewall to deny all traffic other than ICMP ping/pong and TCP traffic on those specific ports.I am looking for a graphical application which will let me monitor any connections being made to my server in order to keep an eye out for possible security concerns. To be more specific, I'd like to be able to see the source IP addresses, TCP/UDP ports, and individual bandwidth in use by external connections being made to the server, along with any other information that might be helpful in identifying a possible intrusion attempt.

I have been out of the UNIX world for some time preoccupied with real life problems. I'm interested in getting a home system up and running, but having difficulties deciding on a base platform.I am leaning towards a Linux, versus a BSD due to the tremendous amount of employers seeking people with that technology. However, I am attracted to the auditing performed on packages on the BSD end, particularly NetBSD/OpenBSD.Is there a Linux distribution that performs auditing of third party packages? I understand there are some commercial distributions, but wonder if they are more reactive than proactive

My computer says the driver is installed and the device is present. All of that went fine. Now I need to connect my card to my house's wireless network. Am I supposed to do that in System-->Administration-->Network Tools? The problem is that whenever I click on network tools, the application looks like it is going to start-up and then quits/crashes/runs away, whatever. Any ideas on what is causing this?
Okay, I tried launching from the terminal, here is what I got:

I would like to test network performance, to get statistic information. Is there any tools where I could specify partikular message size send as a constant for many times and in an output I could get time for each transaction? There is a tool called ApacheBench, it is for webserver testing, but I would like to find something similar for network testing. I have also tried Netpipe, Netperf, Iperf, but they do not show information in an output, which I would like to see.

I have a rhel5 as my file server with active directory intergeration and using samba for folder sharing ,webmin to manage the shares.We haveany folders and subfolders and files.We are facing the following issue.We had given a folder called yardworklist which is shared by 8 people with full access.The yardworklist will have more than 80 folders which represents each ship.The problem we are facing is some user copy a folder or file from a specific ship folder say SEA HERON to another ship's folder say BOW CLIPPER.The next day the person who wants to work on SEA HERON found the file or folder was missing and use his search tool to get the folder or file. I dont know who is the person did this.Basically a event log will also be enough like which file has been copied by whom to which place.

In 2 weeks, I will be handed over 8 servers, each one hosts around ~3 virtual machines, which will make them a total of around ~24 servers. And part of my initial responsibility is to make sure that these servers are secured and ready for me to look after.My question is, what are the best procedures (or as I will call it "checklist") to assess and audit each server, and be 100% sure that the server doesn't have a rootkit and everything is secured.

I am trying to initilaize auditing on a Red Hat 5.2 enterprise server. Things like:
/sbin/chkconfig audit on
/etc/audit/audit.rules
/var/log/audit/audit.log
are what I am looking at, but I need to know where things go to start the audit service. A simple example with all of the pieces set to audit, then I can add rules to match requirements.

Been helping a user who recently upgraded to 11.04 as his networking stopped after the upgrade. One thing I noticed was that he could not get ping to work.Then checked my 11.04 machine and it also fails to ping using Network Tools. I know the network is OK as I am using my Ubuntu machine to write this. Ping from the command line is fine so it is only the Network Tools ping test that appears to be broken.
Asked another Ubuntu 11 user to check his machine and he also cannot get ping to work even though his machine appears to be fine. Again this is only using the GUI tool.I know it is not hardware as I can dual boot and in XP everything is fine and I can ping all my systems. Also I am sharing a folder from my Ubuntu and my Mac shares the folder just fine. The Mac can also ping everything except the Ubuntu box. Command line ping works so it is not a basic network problem.So as far as I can tell the Network Tools ping test is not working. Has anyone else seen this or can confirm that it is broke. How do I report this or get it fixed?

I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 and I've been unable to access any type of Internet service besides web browsing. When I check on Network Tools, it's always set on Loopback Interface, regardless of whether I've just switched it to Ethernet Interface. I haven't been able to download system updates through Update Manager. I'm not very experienced with Ubuntu.

I have a third party program (tightvnc) which I want to monitor and detect if it loses a connection with a client. I don't care if the client has the program open but isn't doing anything with it, I only want to know if the actual TCP connection is lost.
Since TCP takes forever to die on it's own I was thinking the best way to detect if a connection is lost is by bandwidth the bandwidth on the tcp port allocated to the VNC connection. Are there any tools built in to redhat (RHEL 5.2) which I could use to do this? Since I don't have full control of the operating system I would prefer to use built in tools rather then trying to get a new tool installed.

I'm a linux newbie and scripting novice and I'm trying to pull auditing info and dump it into a file. I made some login changes so it would get audited but I don't want to have to sift through the log to see who the user was and what was done. This is what I have below here and I can't seem to get it to extract the info want using the event id. The "ausearch -a $10" from the script should get it from the 10th column but it's not working.If I can get this to work I would like to add additional aureport options.
#!/bin/bash
yyyy=`date "+%Y"`
mm=`date "+%m"`
[code]...

Running Ubuntu Server 10.4
I'm in need of some auditing to determine what is happening with some files on our local server. What is generally the best tool to load, and do you have any good links to a tutorial on how to install, setup and run?
I'm looking for what users have accessed a file. ... read, open, edit, delete, move, save... etc..

Anyone know if the collection of STD tools have been included in Fedora repositories? Would love to recreate a STD disk based off of F12+ live cd and those tools. (Knoppix Secuity Tools Disk that seem to have died out a couple years back) Great tools, just the distro doesnt support new hardware....but if in a F12+package......all would be good.

Been a ubuntu user for almost a year. I've decided to branch out and install fedora on my other laptop.
Currently I'm trying to create a bootable usb using this guide:[url]
Using rpm to check for livecd-tools tells me it's not installed.
I tried to get it through apt-get install livecd-tools. But that didn't find anything.
I tried installing yum and to obtain it but to no avail. Same error as apt, "Not available".
