General :: Get Back The Control Of The Screen/keyboard On System?
Aug 24, 2011
I have a Linux system running (Debian). It is working perfectly from a remote point of view. I can ssh in it, it has the imap running correctly, and a couple of kvm systems running (I can also ssh to them). Well, it works!
But when I go in front of the keyboard/mouse/screen there's nothing. No way to switch between the consoles with Ctrl+Alt+F# (X is not running on this system). The screen is desperately black. But the screen does not go to sleep mode, it still has its green led on! I guess it means that the graphics card still sends the H and V syncs correctly (VGA connection).
Is there a process that is blocking the display and prevents me from getting the control?
Note: Last time I used the console, it was in console 1. Ctrl+Alt+F1.

I don't care if this is done in the bios or a kernel module or software. Is there any way at all to do make the 'fn' key act as 'control' and the 'control' key act as 'fn' in linux running on a macbook pro?
PS. You can do this with software in OSX with the application KeyRemap4MacBook.

I have a logitech wireless keyboard/mouse, but just lost the tiny usb wireless receiver.
I want to use my laptop as the keyboard for the other machine (Ubuntu 10.10) until I replace the keyboard and mouse.
Is it possible to control the console session's keyboard over ssh? I only want keyboard control, I don't want to use something like VNC because the video is too slow.
EDIT: I'd like to be clear that I want to be able to control gui applications running on the console session, so something like unix screen won't

Volume up, volume down and mute keys on the keyboard don't control the volume any longer. They worked before. Hitting the keys brings up a progress bar widget with the volume level unchangeable, set at 0% (which is not accurate at all).It looks like the key mappings or key bindings are working, but there is a disconnect with actual functionality. The volume cannot be changed or muted anymore from the keyboard.
This worked just fine in KDE on Fedora 11 before upgrading KDE components yesterday with Yumex. I am now using KDE 4.3.2 I don't think that it's a coincidence that it stopped working after doing an update.
I updated the kernel and nVidia drivers too, but this problem exists when I went back and tested with the previous kernel, so I don't suspect the kernel upgrade. No info in Xorg.conf about the keyboard. Is there a setting that I am missing?
Sound works just fine. I can listen to whatever source I like. This is not a problem with the sound drivers as far as I can tell.I just want to be able to control the volume with the keys on my Logitech Illuminated Keyboard, model Y-UY95. Is anyone else experiencing this?I can adjust the volume with Kmix 3.5 or GNOME Volume Control V2.1

If I remain 'connected' (with the KVM) to the linux machine the gnome screen saver cuts in and the system remains 'as is' until 'woken up' with the mouse or keyboard. However, if I switch to another machine using the KVM, within a short time (maybe even minute or two) the linux machine goes dead. Now it has not crashed, as I can log in from a remote machine and do anything I need from a terminal, but the machine seems not to respond. I can't even use ctrl-alt-fn to switch to a console screen.
I initially tried entering telinit 3 from a remote machine but it made no apparent difference. However, if after telinit 3 I then killed the Xorg process and later issued a telinit 5 the X server restarted, but with a curious black 'notch' at the top of the screen. I am using an NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GS graphics card. I am now adding the backtrace from Xorg.0.log. It seems that when the KVM switches to another machine for more than a very short time the X server crashes.

I generate more than 50GB of cache files on my RHEL server (and typical file size is 200kb so no of files is huge). When I try to delete these files it takes 8-10 hours. However, the bigger issue is that the system load goes to critical for these 8-10 hours. Is there anyway where I can keep the system load under control during the deletion.I tried using
nice -n19 rm -rf *
but that doesn't help in system load.

i have noticed that if vista is not the active partition, hybernate does not work. it just goes black and then back to the user icon screen to log back in. another "slight" problem was that i was not able to apply a service pack. after restoring vistas dominance i was able to install the pack. is there any other work arounds for hybernate? even though you might not be interested in cleaning up after microsoft.

I tried hard so that I can stay away from version control but in almost good job specifications, I find version control as requirement. So I thought I had to start from somewhere. I always tried to read it but haven't got much luck with it. So I have few problems to ask. I am confused and I really want to know how can I use version control in my context and how will my working environment change with it.
I have Linux VPS Server. I use capnel/whm to create sites in php/joomla. So is version control a software or script which I can install on my linux box like ./configure. Or I have to install it on every site like any framework I use Dreamweaver to edit files via FTP. Now if I install version control then do I still use same method to edit files or then method gets chnaged What about the database like MySQL will it stays same or its also version controlled Will version control make my system slow and how much space it uses on my server.

Title sums up my problem. Im running so many processes in Slackware, running KDE. I dont even run that many programs, and already its more than XP has (by a **** load). What is wrong here, and how do i kill a lot of the processes to cut down on my cpu usage by tons and cut down memory usage while still keeping everything the same?
Heres a picture of my system monitor - img651 DOT imageshack DOT us/img651/5994/systemmonitorz.png
I didnt put image tags because its a fullscreen.
The memory rises over time, when I restarted my computer it was up to 500 - 600 mbps. At the minute after its at 360.

My problem is basically that when I boot for the first time after a fresh installation and setup, I am always stuck at the login screen or thrown back to it. No matter what account I log onto, whether it's 'root' or any other user account I have setup, it would attempt logging in, black out the screen, turn my monitor off then on again and I'm back at the login screen. This is all using the graphical interface of course. I'm having this same problem with all the linux distributions that I've tried so far:
Gnome Sabayon Mandriva 2010-I've even tried changing all the different boot environments, and same problem Open Solaris and Ubuntu won't even install. It just sits at the loading screen. Why would this happen? I've tried all these OS's on my regular PC, which is a dual core, 4 gb of ram, and they've worked perfectly. So why wouldn't it run properly on that other PC?

But once i reinstalled at lucid (my computer's HDD fried and it was under warranty), I didn't even get the standard ubuntu splash. If Someone could help me to get the splash screen back, i can do the rest.

Our company had a vendor doing some data transformation work for us that we recently decided to take in house. They were good enough to transfer all their processes to a pc we gave them and it's running great. Only thing is that its a linux OS and I have no idea how to do anything other than what to click on to run programs.
Its OS version 2.6.34.8-68.fc13.i686.PAE. KDE SC version:4.5.5
I know that at the bottom left where there would be a windows button on a Windows PC there is a blue K button. That's ALL I know.
First thing I'd like to know is how to totally back up this system OS and all so that if something happens I can load it onto another PC. I'm pretty panicked because it IS an old pc it's on. Then, I'd like to know what is this exactly and how can I learn what I have here

I have an embedded board with a small UPS. When AC power goes down, I need to turn off all power hungry devices in order to have a clean shutdown. First thing I do, is set DPMS to force powerdown, then go through the usual SIGTERM/SIGKILL/umount sequence. I have an Intel i915 Display adapter connected to an LVDS LCD panel.
Unfortunately, when Xorg dies, Xserver or the VT code turn the LCD panel back on.
I even tried working around it by directly poking the panel enable register in the Display chip, so that X doesn't know about it, but the panel goes back on when the VT comes back.
Is there any "legal" way of keeping the display off?

I own an ASUS G71V laptop and I run openSUSE 11.2 with latest kernel and patches.
I just tried to use Fn+F10/F11/F12 combinations to regulate volume, just to see if they work.
I found that (from KDE 4.4.3) I can see the pop-up volume indicator going up and down as I press the right combination.
Ok... unfortunately, hardware keys regulate the wrong volume slider as I can see by opening Kmix. The front-microphone channel instead of master is regulated.
Actually, I just found that if I click on the volume icon on the taskbar I get the front mic slider, which seems to be bad.
How can I tell KDE that the default channel is the "master"?

In the past few days Ive noticed a lot of updates. Yesterday morning several times I went to click on items on my desktop and I couldnt. I thought it was just my batteries getting weak. Yesterday afternoon it got so bad I couldnt click on anything for hours at a time. I could only power offIve been reading lots of forums and threadsd there are lots of possible problems to this but they all come down to xorg file and usb issues.
An example of one possible problem: When I have the system log open I can not move the app around, make it bigger or smaller, I can only scroll on the right pane and have to use the mouse keys to navigate the left pane. And if I want to shut the app down, sometimes I can use the ctl+F to close it but sometimes I cant. After I shut the app, any app that is, the mouse pointer turns to |< and I cant click on anything for 5 min to 5 hours. It was suggested to run sudo dpkg reconfigure phigh xserver-xorg but when I did I didnt see anything visually or in the terminal occur.

I have a home-theater computer hooked up to my TV. It has a keyboard of its own, but I don't like to have to drag it out just to queue up a movie. The thing is, I can use my netbook computer to wirelessly ssh into the home-theater computer and do all kinds of things...copy and transcode files, etc--but nothing GUI. I would like to be able to simply run mplayer from my ssh session and have it show up on the TV. When I ssh into my HTPC and try to run mplayer I get "no X session". Is there some way to do this, so that I can either launch graphical programs on the host computer's x-server, or totally use the keyboard/mouse of my netbook as if they were connected directly to the HTPC?
