I have a friend that tried to change her user password on Windows, and now can't log in to her account. Of course it's the only user account on the computer. Are there system recovery tools on any Linux liveCDs that could change the passwords of Windows user account?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu, with a dual boot functionality and worked great. I was recommended Backtrack 4 and I installed it in the system. Now, I try to use the dual boot with Backtrack, Ubuntu and Windows 7 and only Backtrack works. I tried the restore disks that I created when I got the laptop, but the problem persists. s there a way to delete this Backtrack from the system and go back to Windows 7?

As much as it pains me to say it, in my Windows XP vm (via virtualbox) I was able to use the "Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator" to make a keyboard layout that put in symbols for greek letter, h-bar, inequality signs, etc...
I want to do the same on my linux box. However, all I've found so far is tutorials telling me to edit the text file of xkb/xmodmap. This is less than ideal. So, is there an equivalent tool that would easily allow me to make it so that special characters (ie greek letters, math symbols, etc) were inputted when I pressed CTRL-ALT-<key> or some other such combination?
Alternately, if someone knows a way to import files from teh MS layout creator, that would do the trick as well. However, it's less likely.
What's a nice and easy-to-use integrated tool for shell scripts developing, which offers things like:
- syntax and commands help
- highlighting
- integrated SVN client (this is mandatory for me)
- usual text editor functions
I would like to have it for Windows, but also for RH would be fine.

Recover the various file types (txt, php etc)
Recover it as the original files names
TestDisk and PhotoRec almost do the trick, but the original filenames are not restored.

cp -irv /test/test1/.* /test as per the requirement but what i see in destinarion i.e, /test that no files or directory has been copied in /test & the files/directories is also removed from source i.e, /test/test1
so my query is how can i get the files/directories back with data?

Is there an actual How-To or something like it about sharing data between linux system(s) and MS Windows XP?I do not think there is a golden path but maybe a list of possibilities and their pros and contras would be fine. As I understood there are different ways of sharing data (and so of setting the partitions)
1. Accessing the data of a MS Windows (NTFS) partition from a linux system (contra: possible data loss/data corruption?).
2. Accessing the data of a linux (ext3) partition form a Microsoft system (XP) (contra: possible data loss/data corruption?).
3. Sharing a data partition (FAT ?) (contra: problems with large files).
4. Visualization (contra1: If the main system gets broken, the guest is broken, too?; contra2: not so easy?; contra3: windows male ware in linux?).
I am thinking about reorganizing my hole system of sharing data and of partitions (including my NTFS partition for XP data and FAT partition for data shared with XP and linux).Now I am using mostly a FAT partition for sharing data but this seems to me not the way (for big files and especially because of data security).
I thought of making my /home partition bigger and use a windows program to get excess to ext3/ext4 from MS XP. I also thought of deleting my hole NTFS data partition and use only /home with document-folders etc. for each user / for the linux users and for the Mircosoft users. But this seems not so wise jet from I have read (at least not with an ext4 data partition):

how to backup both the system and the data from my Red Hat Server to a share on a windows SBS server where the regular network backup will take it off-site every night. The Red Hat Server is basically a web server on the LAN using RAID 1 to ensure some redundancy in the discs and is used as an internal web server for an administration system.
The Windows SBS server is the domain controller and rest of the network is totally windows based. The SBS server has large discs which host all of the general data to be backed up and is controlled by a 3rd party IT company. We have a share created on the SBS Server which is to backup all of the information from the Red Hat box to ensure we can potentially restore the system quickly in case of a major problem.
The thorn here is that I am working on a different site to the Red Hat Box and have to do everything over SSH. the Red Hat server has Samba running but I have not used it to mount an external windows share? Is there an 'out of the box' backup software on the Red Hat server that I can control over ssh to do the job? The biggest worry for me is the backing up the system to a state where it can be popped on a disc and the system restored from the backup - or most of it anyway - enough to get the server back on its legs.
Allot of Crazy things happened lately. A few problems happened and I fixed them. In the end I have 3 partitions of ubuntu net book remix and 1 for windows 7. I never reinstalled windows so could I do a system restore (in windows)to go back and then reinstall 1 partition of ubuntu net book remix.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI used a Kingston 8Gb flash drive as a live usb recently (copied the live iso image over using dd). I am done with the installations and all but seem to have a problem. i cannot format my flash drive. It now shows as a live CD (800 or so mb). Is there a way to fix the partition table back? I guess if i copy a partition table image from some other 8 gb drive that might fix the problem but i dont have any other flash drives. Is there a solution possible or am i stuck with a live usb forever

Last week I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my system in dual booting. I had installed succesfully both but unable to see data files from windows OS. Though I have excercised the options in various resources available on internet/blogs. System takes about 03 hrs during installation process. I am also unable to configure Thunderbird.

I have a dual boot Acer Aspire One, after reinstalling Windows back to "original factory", the way it was straight out of the box, it now will not boot up at all. It goes to the Windows start screen goes blank, and loops there infinitely. Is there a USB tool I can use to figure out what went wrong and recover either my Windows or Linux partition with out having to do a complete reinstall?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have it at lot that when a system crashes fatally and restarts (due to a power outage, kernel panic, tripping over a cord or something), there is no mention of it in the log. It just shows that the system was started. Is there a tool that will show this in the log? With a message like "system was not shut down properly or had a fatal crash / kernel panic" when restarting? It is pretty easy to do, just have a lock file somewhere that is removed when the system shuts down gracefully and that is left when it is not. And mechanism that checks this when starting up. It would also be possible to tell when the crash occured, as you can update the lock file from time to time and when the systems dies, it cannot anymore.
