I'm using Ubuntu 11.04. In a startup script, I have
Code:
start() {
log_daemon_msg "Starting selenium-server server: "
export DISPLAY=localhost:15.0
/usr/bin/Xvfb :15 -ac -screen 0 1024x768x16 &
From the console, how do I take a screen shot of the display at localhost:15.0 -- my DISPLAY above?

Unfortunately my experience in the Unix* based world up to this point has only been using web servers and administrating them, no GUI experience of any kind so I am completely unfamiliar with the setup and entire usage of Xorg or any other Window manager at this point. The issue I am having is with the screen resolutions I am being allowed to chose for my Dell Studio 1535 running Fedora Core 13 and the KDE 4 desktop GUI, thus my issue since I am not really familiar with how to run a Unix* based GUI in the first place.
The basic information, if there is more needed just advise what and what command gathers that info (or what conf/log I should look into in order to find it). Laptop is a Dell Studio 1535 Video is the Mobile Intel GMA X3100 ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics. LCD interface is the LVDS.
So far it seems to give me modes for 1024x768 and on down, nothing above this. I believe I am supposed to use the radeon driver being that is the type of card it is but every time I change the xorg.conf file to use this instead of vesa the system wont get past the loading screen anymore upon reboot and nor can I seem to find a way to bring up a command line so I can hit up the Xorg.0.log to see what is wrong or change the xorg.conf file back to the original driver it had listed.
I am going to assume this is a missing driver or something else it hangs on but without being able to get access back to the system and having to rebuild it again (re-install via live CD) I am basically out of luck at this time. Sorry for the rather poor post but I do hope to receive some basic directions on where to go from here with this issue

I run KDE 3.X and for the life of it, can't figure out how to assign the "ALT+SHIFT" to switch between keyboard layouts? The default AL+SHIFT+K switches from EN to second one and after that it (obviously) doesn't work. saw a few posts [URL]....alt-shift.html), but the flag is not changing in the tray.
I also tried to go thru "Keyboard shortcuts", but for whatever reason, it doesn't want to accept the combination of "alt+shift" and expects another key ( i guess).
I'm using Centos 5.2 and the the keyboard model is "MS natural keyboard pro" with US and two Cyrillic layouts - one of them is phonetic.

I am trying to install X window on my dedicated server. This is the first time I am doing this and I had several issues which I was able to fix through searching the forum. This is a CENTOS 5.6 x86_64 standard and I am using WHM 11.30.1 (build 1) on it. Through accessing SSH as root I maneged to install X window and Gnome. #yum groupinstall "X Window System" "GNOME Desktop Environment"

I've been reading a lot of articles on Xorg XWindow System having the ability to allow 6600/tcp for remote screen connections and I've been trying to find a way to remove the functionality without having to just dump XWindow and settle for CLI on my server. I heard it was disabled by default, but I just want to get rid of that ability completely by cutting it out of it's code and yes, I'm feeling very, very paranoid.

I have a Linux system running (Debian). It is working perfectly from a remote point of view. I can ssh in it, it has the imap running correctly, and a couple of kvm systems running (I can also ssh to them). Well, it works!
But when I go in front of the keyboard/mouse/screen there's nothing. No way to switch between the consoles with Ctrl+Alt+F# (X is not running on this system). The screen is desperately black. But the screen does not go to sleep mode, it still has its green led on! I guess it means that the graphics card still sends the H and V syncs correctly (VGA connection).
Is there a process that is blocking the display and prevents me from getting the control?
Note: Last time I used the console, it was in console 1. Ctrl+Alt+F1.

How do I change the screen blanking behavior on Linux virtual terminals?
For example, if I switch to a VT from X, login, and leave the system alone for 5 minutes or so, the screen will blank like a screensaver. It comes back with any keypress, like a screensaver.
Mostly I just want to change the timeout, but I'm also interested in other settings.
If it helps, one of my systems is running Ubuntu 10.04 with the stock graphics drivers. fbset shows the console using the radeondrmfb framebuffer device.

Currently I'm using Arch Linux. I'm more used to Linux now, but for communication, I still have some problems:
My main software which I use on Windows is Skype and TeamViewer to share screen / voice chat to do pair programming with my friends.
imo.im is too simple and it doesn't help much with only chat.
Is there any good way to deal with this problem?

I have recently loaded Ubuntu 9.10 which runs perfectly, except for the power management system.I go into the GUI power management screen and tell it to use the screen-saver after ten minutes, but NEVER suspend/ hibernate but it suspends/hibernates anyway, sometimes after an hour, sometimes hours later. Is it possible to keep the screen-saver but disable the rest of the power management system?

I am a Linux newbie and did one successful install Ubuntu 9.1 32 bit on my old desktop. Encouraged by that success (and the ease of it), this week I built my own system, which will be my primary system. I am trying to install Ubuntu 9.1 (AMD 64 version) and after the partition selection screen (I chose to partition the entire disk), I immediately get a white blank screen. Then nothing happens. I also tried with Ubuntu 9.1 32 bit, XUbuntu 9.1 64, Ubuntu 9.04 all had the same results.
Not sure if the hardware specs are required, but here they are:
1) Motherboard: MSI KA 780 G
2) Processor: AMD Athlon II X4 630
3) Memory: Corsair 2 x 2 GB, 800 MHz twinx 6400 c6
4) Harddrive: Hitachi sata 300, 1 TB
In desperation, I have started windows XP installation and that seems to progress fine at its leisurely pace. Its formatting the drive right now. During one of the attempts, it did install something*, since after that I see a new ubuntu partition after that. But when I boot from hard disk I get a black screen with cursor. I tried to search thru the forums and nobody seemed to have this exact problem, one guy got a white screen with cursor after a graphics card install, which is not the same. I dont want to go back to windows.

Has anyone managed to do a dual boot with W2K and a linux system without a resulting blue screen of death on the Windows partition? What I mean is only W2K and Linux, not one with XP. I think there is a difference in the bootloaders of XP and W2K.

At the recommendation of a friend I attempted to switch from GNOME to xfce4. Well I'm guessing that either I did something wrong or my video driver issues (nVidia) followed me and compounded. This all started when I tried to add a second monitor to my HP Pavillion DV9000 laptop which at the time was running Ubuntu 10.10 just fine. I loaded the nVidia drivers per the system's request and the monitor's display became distorted. So I did some googling, some tinkering and some installing, reinstalling and removing of various config bits, packages and what not. All with out fixing the problem. By the time I was done my GNOME interface was even a little messed up. My 4 workspaces had disappeared and anything I opened did not have bar and opened up on top over the system tray at the top.
(1 key thing to point out is that in my googling I found a patch for xserver-xorg-core that was suppose to resolve the monitor issue specific to nVidia & 10.10. I found this through the Ubuntu site if I remember right.)So, frustrated, I decided to just press on with changing the desktop manager. I was hoping that it was reload or over write whatever is messed up causing my growing issues. Now the machine boots, I get a splash screen that says "xubuntu" (with a little mouse) and it just sits there until I do a control-alt-delete at which time it will reboot and do it all over again. I have tried reloading grub 2 from the live CD with no change.

i am fairly new to Ubuntu. i was using it fine for a month, but today, when i booted my computer up, it came up with a black screen instead of the normal purple ubuntu screen. the black screen had white text on it, and asked for my username and password. from there, it was a terminal prompt. i have been google searching for a while, and have tried typing "startx", "sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop", "sudo gdm", and i have also tryed uninstalling xorg, and reinstalling, and none of these things wanted to do anything for me.

I was using irssi in screen but lost connection. After I ssh'd back in to the server, I can no longer attach to that screen. screen -ls shows that the screen is already attached. I tried screen -D to force detach it, and it said detach but screen -ls still says it's attached. I tried screen -x and it just hangs there.
[sub@server ~]$ screen -ls
There are screens on:
4033.poe (Detached)
7728.irssi (Attached)
2 Sockets in /var/run/screen/S-sub.What can I do now?

I've been a happy Arch Linux user for years now. Recently, on my eee 1000he (an Atom netbook with intel GMA graphics) I've been seeing strange things. After it has been on for some time (usually hours), the screen starts to jitter, just for a fraction of a second, every now and then. After this has happened some times, the screen goes black (one time it went red). The backlight is still on and I can still ssh to the machine which reacts normal appart from the black screen. I can only regain the screen when rebooting. What could this mean? Is it hardware or software? X logs don't shown anything weird, where should I look? I haven't found anyone with the same problem on the net.

I actually don't know what was the cause of this. Because of some display problems such as openSUSE freezes with external monitors, I have included xorg repository and updated relevant packages. A couple of days ago, suddenly my system started not refreshing the screen properly. For example, when I change a folder in Nautilus, the file pane is blank even though there are lots of files. The files appear when I move mouse cursor around or I activate some other window with alt-tab, and get back. Or in OpenOffice Witer, if I press arrow keys, there are lots of residual image of the cursor. So the screen is not properly refreshed right now.
