View 1 RepliesI'm using Ubuntu 11.04. In a startup script, I have
Code:
start() {
log_daemon_msg "Starting selenium-server server: "
export DISPLAY=localhost:15.0

From the console, how do I take a screen shot of the display at localhost:15.0 -- my DISPLAY above?

I run KDE 3.X and for the life of it, can't figure out how to assign the "ALT+SHIFT" to switch between keyboard layouts? The default AL+SHIFT+K switches from EN to second one and after that it (obviously) doesn't work. saw a few posts [URL]....alt-shift.html), but the flag is not changing in the tray.
I also tried to go thru "Keyboard shortcuts", but for whatever reason, it doesn't want to accept the combination of "alt+shift" and expects another key ( i guess).
I'm using Centos 5.2 and the the keyboard model is "MS natural keyboard pro" with US and two Cyrillic layouts - one of them is phonetic.
I am trying to install X window on my dedicated server. This is the first time I am doing this and I had several issues which I was able to fix through searching the forum. This is a CENTOS 5.6 x86_64 standard and I am using WHM 11.30.1 (build 1) on it. Through accessing SSH as root I maneged to install X window and Gnome. #yum groupinstall "X Window System" "GNOME Desktop Environment"

I've been reading a lot of articles on Xorg XWindow System having the ability to allow 6600/tcp for remote screen connections and I've been trying to find a way to remove the functionality without having to just dump XWindow and settle for CLI on my server. I heard it was disabled by default, but I just want to get rid of that ability completely by cutting it out of it's code and yes, I'm feeling very, very paranoid.

I have been trying to install linux on my HP pavillion 511w for several days. The first I tried to install was debian, it didn't freeze but it kept saying unable to mount cdrom drive. (This may have been from an incorrect jumper setting that I later changed.) I haven't tried debian since changing the jumper.
I next tried ubuntu 10.04 beta 2, all it did was go to a ubuntu flash screen that never stopped cycling these small round "lights".
I then tried the "stable" ubuntu 9.10. This went to a screen with several options for installing ubuntu, checking the disk etc. No matter what I selected it would just freeze. Since this is my first install I wasn't sure if this was normal or not so I waited several hours and still nothing, after enough time I concluded it must have been frozen. But before I continue wasting time waiting for hours can someone tell me... when installing these linux versions is there a sign that it is loading, booting, or installing the OS? I figure it must have a status bar or something, but want to make sure.
I next tried linux mint 8. It did the same thing, went to a sceen with several options and when I select something it says "loading" at the bottom with a blinking cursor, but of course it never loads anything, just sits there. This one throws me off a bit because it says its loading and the cursor blinks but it just doesn't seem like it is actually doing anything.
I have also downloaded ubuntu 8 which I plan to try next. I've tried changing the boot/install options by pushing F6 or whatever it was.
The computer is an older system that I never use because its so slow running XP. I thought linux would run faster and I could get some use out of it while learning/experimenting with linux. I always have to have projects to keep my mind working, but constantly failing at the starting line is not much fun.
I have a nearly 10 years old iMac at home and installed Lenny on (somehow, I had to thrash Mac OS 9.2 :-P). Everything was successful until now, but on entering "startkde", the screen fills withkpersonalizer: cannot connect to X serverlines. Upon looking at other threads here I tried mdetect, installing X11... but to no avail

View 6 Replies View RelatedI use Opensuse 11 with fvwm. How can I get conky start automatically when I start fvwm?
I setup the conky under fvwm session for my Opensuse 11 but it won't start automatically. I am wondering how to write some kind of scripts to force it to start automatically and with a delay about 10 seconds after fvwm starts.
I am running Sid. After a dist-upgrade, when I boot into a DE, trying to run applications doesn't work.
If I click on an icon, I see a "Starting <Application>" icon on the task bar and then it dies. If I try running Alt-F2 and then typing the name of the application, nothing happens.
I just upgraded one of my non-mission-critical servers to squeeze just to see how it would go. Since the upgrade NFS is broken. When I try to start it I get:
Starting NFS kernel daemon: nfsdrpc.nfsd: unable to resolve ANYADDR:nfs to inet address: Servname not supported for ai_socktype
rpc.nfsd: unable to set any sockets for nfsd failed!
I've tried searching on those errors, but all I've found is that this has happened to others when no network interfaces are started; this is clearly not the case with this server, since other services are running and working on both interfaces.
I have installed squeeze base system (text only), nvidia graphic drivers and then installed xorg. Trying to startx gave me these errors on the console.
FATAL: Error inserting nvidia (/lib/modules/2.6.32-5-686/nvidia/nvidia.ko): No such device

I am now for four weeks on Wheezy KDE after turning away from PCLinuxOS.But now that Jessie KDE is out, I installed it on a free 20 GB partition to have a look. What I really like is the following:
At start up on Wheezy GRUB MENU - INIT messages - KDE welcome screen -> desktop..I am missing those INIT messages. Gives me a good feeling for system status.I understand, we now have systemd, but is there a possibility to have those reassuring messages at startup and maybe also at shut down?

The other things I did that might have caused this problem was that I installed virtual guest additions for VirtualBox, and one other addition that was needed for the USB functionality with in VirtualBox. I can't remember the name of that which I installed.I have looked at some of the logs in /var/logs.

I made a copy of default-ssl and changed the SSLCertificateKeyFile record to match the certificate I had. I enabled the site through a2enmod and restarted apache but a telnet to 443 tells me that SSL is not running. Also apache2ctl -S is not listing the record. There is no indication in the errors logs to give me a clue.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm not a Linux noob, but I am far from guru. I'm running a single board computer with a slightly customized Debian Etch (customized by the SBC vendor). No Gnome/KDE/X installed. My application is a control application which uses SDL (Simple DirectMedia Layer) to paint some basic graphics on the VGA. I need to run it as root because the application calls iopl() to access an IO port.If I run my application manually from the command line, life is sweet. From Googling around, I found http://www.debian-administration.org/articles/28, and hence I:1) Created a script in /etc/init.d2) Executed "update-rc.d scriptName defaults" to link the script into the boot sequenceAll very straightforward. My application starts at boot. But when I try to SSH/SFTP into the SBC, I get "Connection refused". So I can't manage the SBC anymore, and this is a big problem. I am not sure if it's relevant, but my application starts before the SSH daemon. My script looked like:
case "$1" in
start)
echo "Starting my application"
