General :: Possible To Keep The Screen-saver But Disable The Rest Of The Power Management System?

I have recently loaded Ubuntu 9.10 which runs perfectly, except for the power management system.I go into the GUI power management screen and tell it to use the screen-saver after ten minutes, but NEVER suspend/ hibernate but it suspends/hibernates anyway,sometimes after an hour, sometimes hours later.Is it possible to keep the screen-saver but disable the rest of the power management system?
I run V11.1 on a minimalised install on a stick with TWM, no KDE at all but I cant get rid of the screen shutdown after about 20 minutes. Also I have several other boxes with v11.1 with KDE and still cant get rid of these screen shut downs.I dont believe this is coming from the bios in these machines. they are all Intel D945 MBs with some sort of Nvidea cards.
My app normal runs with no user mouse or input and is pocessor intensive.I would like to retain the power shutdown and reboot capability from comand line.I realise its not as simple as pulling symlinks of of the init levels in the new complicated distros, but I was suprised the non kde twm install still shuts down the screen.So I want a low level level fix that will remove anything kicked off by init that will derate the system performance or turn off the screen.
I am wanting to completely disable Power Management, can I do it through the GUI? I am a former OpenSuSE user & am use to YaST. So it is a little hard finding ways to edit some settings.
I've just installed openSuSE 11.2, and I need to disable the feature that causes the laptop to suspend when you close the lid (and it's plugged in to the wall). I've already done this for my user profile, and I've attempted to do it for the root profile, as well, but when the GDM login screen is shown, the laptop still suspends when you close the lid.
I have Lucid Lynx with Gnome and Kernel 2.6.32 installed. Which probelms can I get if I disable Power Manager (Power management daemon) from the startup?
BTW does Code: xset -dpms s off do the same thing like disable Power Manager in the Starup Applications or DPMS is just for the Monitor?
I tried to achieve this by disabling 'Enable display power management' checkbox in the 'Configure Desktop -> Display -> Power Control' KDE configuration dialog. That didn`t help and display still goes into standby mode after some period of inactivity. Also, I tried to disable dpms functionality by calling 'xset -dpms'. That didn`t help too. Note that 'xset dpms force standby'
I have a computer(Fedora 12 Kde4) playing flash,but the screen will get into sleep mode after a few minutes.But it will not sleep when it plays movies.So I want to know: is there any way to active the screen every few minutes so that the screen will not get into sleep ? It is a remote computer ,all I can do is to send cron job to it ,no SSH. So commands is the best way,but please do not interrupt the flash ? I run this command "xrefresh" to refresh the screen ,but the screen still sleeps.
One of the PC having Ubantu gets disconnected automatically from the network.As we do in normal windows is that we get to the device manger and select the LAN card properties and check off the power management check box similarly how can be do this thing in a linux OS.
I have been having a problem with every Ubuntu version I have used where the screen blanks automatically after a few minutes when the computer is left alone.I have set all the settings in the system BIOS and power management settings to disable screen saving features. The screen saver options are set to the following: Pictures Folder, Idle after 2 hours, Activate when Idle unchecked.Require password is checked.
These are my settings, but in about 10 minutes of not being touched, each computer goes to a blank screen and I have to use my password to get back to the desktop.I originally installed Ubuntu 8.04.3 on my desktop, and I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on one of my laptop computers. I have sense upgraded the desktop to 9.10 and then to 10.04.I updated the first laptop to 10.04 and freshly installed 10.04 onto another laptop.I am having this same problem on all three computers and had the problem on each computer from the beginning.I ran update manager today about an hour ago and have not tested this problem, but I expect it is still there. I created a document with nothing but the time and left it on the laptop. I will see how long it takes for the screen blanker to activate.I searched the forum and found two unrelated problems, one of which was the opposite, someone who could not get the screen saver to activate.
I am using "Puredyne" distro, that is Ubuntu. After some time I've been not typing any key the screen-saver starts, but it is malfunctioning because it gradually blanks the screen and does not allow me to take control of the system again. So I ask you how to disable this screen-saver or enable another one that works.
Anyone else have this problem? I've checked the "Disable screen saver while playing movies" checkbox, but my screen still fades to blank after 10 minutes.This doesn't happen in VLC, but VLC is giving another whole problem[URL]
I have an issue where the screen on my laptop will not shut off with the power management tool. The Default Power Manager does not have an option for this.My screen will go blank after a set amount of time, but the lcd-backlight will remain on. I would want the power manager to shut the screen off completely (including turning off the lcd backlight) without shutting down the computer it-self. So the computer can continue to do what I left it to do in the case I forget to close the lid. With the screen shut off completely, will preserve the life of the back light and reduce power consumption.
Is there a better power manager app that will allow me to do this a tweak to the existing default power manager that will allow the functionality I am seeking? laptop was perfectly able to do this under a win-xp environment, so I know the machine is physically capable of doing this. Note: My WinXP OS and Ubuntu OS are on seperate physical drives so there is no dual boot issues. So when I am using one there is no trace of the other present
I'm running Squeeze with Gnome & GDM3. After 1 h my laptop automatically suspends while in the login screen (GDM3; so no user login). I want to prevent that, since this machine also has a server role. how this can be prevented?
I have Fedora 15 gnome 3 installed on my new laptop. When my system runs on battery my power management keeps changing my screen brightness. It keeps dimming my backlight. In the GUI of Power Management I cant find any option to change this setting. How can I do that through Command Line
On a fresh install of Debian 8 with XFCE (with a NVIDIA GeForce 210 according to lspci, and a P7P55D Asus mainboard), I just added a second monitor. This second monitor does not switches off even though the first one does due to the Screensaver Preferences → Advanced → Off After 3 minutes.
The new screen is a HP Pavilion 25xw plugged in using a HDMI cord.
The old screen is a Philips 190S plugged in using a VGA cord.
The new screen (HP on HDMI) only goes blank when the old one (Philips VGA) turns off.
Two tests:
- on the same machine, I also have Windows XP: both screens turns off at the same time with the power management. - I tried on Debian: Code: Select allsleep 5 && xrandr --output HDMI-1 –off
It turns off the second monitor, so I know that it is possible to turn it off from my Debian.
How to set up the system so that both monitors power off when the machine is not used?
I am a brand new user coming from the MS environment. My impression of openSUSE is that it is like moving into a new house that is well built but the rooms are full of half-constructed self-assembly furniture and appliances without any specific instructions. Nor is it clear which does what and whether all are needed or not. There is a town hall down the road where fellow homeowners gather to discuss what each has managed to deduce about putting their own furniture together. The town hall has a sort of library where thousands of pieces of paper with instructions are stored in an ad-hoc filing system
My latest problem is that I have created a screensaver via the "Configure Desktop" application and set "Enable display power management" and set some timeouts.However, I seem to be asked for a password to unlock the screen when I come back to my computer. I have spent 2 hours trying to find the place where I can disable screen password locking but to no avail. I am perplexed and frustrated at how such an obvious function is so ****ed hard to configure. This is the impression I am getting of Linux in general - it is novice user-hostile and badly organised.
The system freezes after the screen saver. 'Blank screen' is used. I can't do anything, so I reboots the machine from another terminal. I am using CentOS 5.4 x86_64.
My Gnome screensaver doesn't work, although it once did.
I have searched for a solution to this problem but no luck. I am running FC 11 and out-of-the-box gnome. At first the screensaver worked normally, shutting off the screen after 5 mins. Now it does not do so. I found the following command line suggestion in the forums, and it looks like it may point to a problem -- the screensaver is inactive, but how to make it active? I may be misunderstanding the term inactive, of course. Logically, the screensaver would have to be inactive if I am typing a command.

The only thing I can think of that might be an issue is that using the "appearances" background facility I added a couple dozen pictures that I thought I might use as screen background. Not long after that I discovered that my screen did not go black after 5 mins as expected. Not sure this correlation has any causal meaning, however. I then tried various things, finally returning to the plain (blue) default. That seemed to fix it for a short while, then after a couple of days, the bad or non-behavior returned -- the screensaver does not work.
(update -- I removed all the extra background pics and it makes no difference.)

I'm fairly used to working with Fluxbox.There,if I want to let myself suspend the computer, all I have to do is add something like Code:[exec] (suspend) {sudo /usr/sbin/pm-suspend}to my .fluxbox/menu and it works like a charm, after having added me to the sudoers. I nstalled openbox earlier today because I was having some font rendering issues in flux and I've been trying to find a way to add something similar to my menu without success. I added this to .config/openbox/menu.xml:
On a couple of Linux laptops I have the built in screen never turns off it's backlight, regardless if a 'black screen' sort of screen saver is activated (this both for a laptop running an X-based desktop as well as for a laptop only having a text console) or if I even close the lid of the laptop (looking carefully in the dark, I can tell that the screen still has the backlight on, even if the laptop "know" it is closed).
This is a bad thing for a couple of reasons: It wastes power It generates heat which when the laptop lid is closed increases the cooling need (the fan goes on more often etc).
Backlights have limited lifetime like all electric components and IIRC, the less a backlight is turned on, the longer it will last. So, what is the best approach (considering a Gentoo with a 2.6.36 kernel) to remedy this? I recon that there probably are two approaches: One for text-only laptops which never displays a desktop, e.g a laptop sitting there acting like a firewall or server one for those running a Gnome/KDE/XFCE desktop (and a SLIM or GDM display manager).
The laptops I have in mind is a Dell Latitude CPi (built 1999, yes, it is from another millenea), a Compaq Armada M700 (built 2001) and a Dell Latitude D630. If this can be accomplished only by configuring things in the Linux OS (be it kernel setup or editing config files) without touching anything in BIOS, that would of course be preferable.
I've recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 and found the following problem: power management doesn't appear to be working. If I'm away from my computer for only a few moments, the screen is on dim when I return and I have to log on again. I've set the following states in Power Management: NEVER SWITCH OFF SCREEN and haven't ticked the DIM WHEN IDLE BOX. Can anyone help with this problem - it's infuriating. Meanwhile, I've gone back to Ubuntu 9.10 ...
