General :: Rpm -ivh Rsh - Screen Hangs ?

Oct 16, 2010

I am trying to install rsh packages. I tried below given command. The screen hangs.

Also, I was previously having problem of 'error: can't create transaction lock on /var/lib/rpm/__db.000', while trying to install. That seem to have resolved with help of steps given below.

This can be corrected with the following steps:

1. Remove any file locks rm rf /var/lib/rpm/_db*

2. Remove any left over temp files in /var/lib/rmp/ with underscores, either single or double. For example, __db.000 - __db.004. This needs to be completed as root.

3. Make a copy of the RPM directories (cd /var/lib mkdir rpm-backup rsync -av ./rpm/. ./rpm-backup/.)

4. Rebuild the database (rpm rebuilddb). Again, you need to be root.

5. Rerun the rpm removal option.

Ubuntu :: Hangs At Install Screen - Then Reboots And Hangs At HP Logo

Feb 15, 2011

I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 x64 on a HP Pavilion p6565uk.

My PC is x64 compatible, although ubuntu will not install.

I don't get to any gui, it says ubuntu will continue install in 5 seconds, at 0, nothing happens. The CPU light is flashing, but nothing happens.

After about 10 minutes, it reboots, but when the HP splash screen shows (Before the boot selection screen) it just hangs. I have to do a hard shutdown to boot back up.

I am using wubi for install.

General :: Laptop Hangs After Welcome Screen (long)

Jun 12, 2010

I have two minor problems with Ubuntu which I've been running on my aging Fujitsu-Siemens Lifebook for a couple of years now.

First, I recently upgraded to v10.04 with no problems. However, I've just applied the latest updates via Update Manager and the laptop will now hang after the welcome screen.

There are no error messages, just a black screen and the case fan runs a full tilt until I force a shutdown. I've waited 5 or so minutes to see if it's actually doing anything but it would appear that it isn't.

The only way to boot the laptop is to choose an older Grub menu option, then it boots up fine. It may very well be a hardware issue because another (newer) laptop in the household has updated no problem.

Next, I tried to change the password of the admin account using "Users and Groups". It appeared to work but then I had to use the old password to log in again. On logging in I am prompted for the new password, the error message saying that the "token ring" password (I think it's token ring, I'm doing this from memory) doesn't match.

Again I can live with this quirk but it would be nice to put it right.

Server :: How To Adjust EMacs Key Binding To Accommodate Screen

Jan 28, 2010

I've recently started using the "screen" multiplexer and it is really handy for some cluster work I've been doing. But if I am in emacs and I press C-A to go to the beginning of the line and the C-N to go to the next line, I get shunted to the next "screen" window. I imagine there are other conflicts as well. I did some googling, but all the suggestions showed how to adjust emacs key-binding to accommodate screen. But I don't want to adjust emacs key-bindings because that is the whole reason I like emacs. I think custom "screen" key-bindings go in .screenrc. Does any emacs fans out there who have run into this problem have any .screenrc code they would be willing to share with me that worked well for them?

It just hangs it there. I do not know what has gone wrong. I did not change anything since friday and no one else uses it. Theres nothing in logs that could give any idea. It just hangs without any reason and is still on the login screen for ever. It does ask my username and password but then it does not go further. But to my surprise I tried logging in with root and it gave me expected error that system administrator is not allowed to login from gnome.

Ubuntu :: After Updates - Stayed To Black Screen Then Filled Up With Error Messages Like About Trace Call

Nov 5, 2010

Two days ago I downloaded and installed new updates after upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10. After the update I was informed I needed to restart. Once my laptop booted up again it stayed to a black screen and then filled up with error messages like something about trace call or call trace?

I had no way to get into my system but I did have some minor success starting in an old kernel. However after a while it would freeze like the graphics driver was going wrong.

Two attempt later of reinstalling 10.10 from disc after deleting the drive content and after updating it would go back to the same.

So I have now disabled updates as I haven't a clue on which one(s) is causing these problems.

I am on a HP Pavillion dv7 with nVidia graphics card and running 64amd Ubuntu.

Ubuntu :: Boot Hangs Up On Splash Screen?

Jul 19, 2010

So I turned off my computer the other day (I leave my laptop on, pretty much 24/7 I only turn it off if I have to, or I forget to plug it in I turned it off this time just because it was feeling warm)...

And when I went to turn it back on, the splash screen was big and ugly looking, then the orange ("loading") dots loaded to the end... but then it just stopped.

My computer wouldn't boot up... so then I used one of the older versions (you know grub lets you select versions before upgrades or whatever)... and the boot splash was the nice small version... and it loaded just fine, but then after the splash screen went away... the monitor just stayed black... same thing with the version before that.

So then I tried recovery mode on the first one (the latest), and when I clicked "boot normally" it took me to shell. However, everything was working fine, I could load up my non-x dependent programs like IRSSI just fine.

I think it has something to do with me installing the ATI proprietary driver (which was stupid of me, Ubuntu was handling my graphics card perfectly without it... and I hate using closed sourced software).

Ubuntu :: Hangs At Load Screen - Never Starts Up

Oct 31, 2010

Now I'm trying to run Ubuntu again. The problem started when I put Ubuntu to sleep, but instead it turned the screen black and hung without going into sleep (this is common for me). I had to cut its power, but afterwards it wouldn't boot.

I tried booting off old kernel and "recovery" ones, but that gives me an error and loads "ash" shell, which doesn't let me browse any of my files (no /home director to speak of).

I'm really at a loss. Is my only option to delete everything and reinstall? If I back-up my home directory, can I just copy/paste the contents into it once I install a new Ubuntu and have things more or less in working order?

Ubuntu :: Hangs On Suspend/hibernate Screen?

Jan 12, 2011

Ok so I'm still a bit of a Ubuntu n00b and I just installed 10.04 on my new laptop (Asus U35F) and it's working pretty well except for one problem.. Every time the laptop goes to sleep/suspends/hibernates, when I try to resume it again it hangs. So I end up seeing the screen to re-log in and I can usually move my mouse around and start typing my password in and all of that for maybe a second, but after that it just freezes!

Especially since right now Ubuntu is the only operating system I have running, and since I use this in school and need to conserve battery as much as possible so it stays running through 6 hours of class, I really need to get this fixed up soon..

General :: Dell Studio 1535 Screen Resolution - System Won't Get Past The Loading Screen Anymore

Aug 4, 2010

Unfortunately my experience in the Unix* based world up to this point has only been using web servers and administrating them, no GUI experience of any kind so I am completely unfamiliar with the setup and entire usage of Xorg or any other Window manager at this point. The issue I am having is with the screen resolutions I am being allowed to chose for my Dell Studio 1535 running Fedora Core 13 and the KDE 4 desktop GUI, thus my issue since I am not really familiar with how to run a Unix* based GUI in the first place.

The basic information, if there is more needed just advise what and what command gathers that info (or what conf/log I should look into in order to find it). Laptop is a Dell Studio 1535 Video is the Mobile Intel GMA X3100 ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics. LCD interface is the LVDS.

So far it seems to give me modes for 1024x768 and on down, nothing above this. I believe I am supposed to use the radeon driver being that is the type of card it is but every time I change the xorg.conf file to use this instead of vesa the system wont get past the loading screen anymore upon reboot and nor can I seem to find a way to bring up a command line so I can hit up the Xorg.0.log to see what is wrong or change the xorg.conf file back to the original driver it had listed.

I am going to assume this is a missing driver or something else it hangs on but without being able to get access back to the system and having to rebuild it again (re-install via live CD) I am basically out of luck at this time. Sorry for the rather poor post but I do hope to receive some basic directions on where to go from here with this issue

General :: Arch Over Time Screen Jitter Then Black Screen?

Jan 15, 2010

I've been a happy Arch Linux user for years now. Recently, on my eee 1000he (an Atom netbook with intel GMA graphics) I've been seeing strange things. After it has been on for some time (usually hours), the screen starts to jitter, just for a fraction of a second, every now and then. After this has happened some times, the screen goes black (one time it went red). The backlight is still on and I can still ssh to the machine which reacts normal appart from the black screen. I can only regain the screen when rebooting. What could this mean? Is it hardware or software? X logs don't shown anything weird, where should I look? I haven't found anyone with the same problem on the net.

Debian Configuration :: When Shutdown Screen Always Stays On And Then It Hangs

Dec 12, 2015

I'm using Debian Sid xfce on my lenovo laptop. When i try to shutdown, the screen always stays on (the fans turn off). It says "reached target shutdown", then this happens: [URL] .... and then it hangs. I have to press the power button to shut it down. (I have the same problem with reboot). I had the same issues with Jessie.

Things i tried so far and didn't work:

Code: Select allshutdown -h now
shutdown -p now
halt
poweroff
systemctl poweroff
init 0

I edited /etc/default/grub and added the following options at "GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT":

acpi=force, acpi=off*, acpi=noirq

*acpi=off: shutdown (not reboot) worked a few times but i didn't have wifi and power manager didn't seem to work

none of them worked..

I have no energy or wake up options at my BIOS.

I found out that i can normally reboot with the Alt + sysrq + REISUB key combination.

Fedora :: Login Screen Hangs After Changing Monitor?

May 4, 2010

I have been searching this forum and google extensively for the last few hours, and I cant dig up anything useful. I have a very weird problem:

Install Fedora 12 from livecd on a widescreen monitor:

- Using Nvidia 96xx drivers for my Gforce2 MX

Everything runs fine at this point. Connect old 17" flatscreen and no network: Login freezes for about a minute after username selection, no password prompt, no mouse movement, no keyboard response, after timeout I return to login screen before username selection .. and can repeat this or.. At that point (or before that point) I can ctrl+alt F2 to 'terminal' screen, login works fine.

init 3, login as root
startx

Works fine then, resolution is %^# tho, and cant change it at that point due to errors I get. I'm convinced the problem has nothing to do with my X configuration tbh. Booting from the LiveCD on this configuration works fine. I am tempted to think it has something to do with my GDM, but as my knowledge is limited, I cant figure it out. If I reconnect the widescreen, it all works fine ...
