I've used ubuntu n have quite good experience in installing softwares and codecs for Totem n amarock. Its very easy on ubuntu cuz system searches online and finds plugins itself.
Now im using CentOS n i updated the system but still i dont see many softwares on repositories unlike in ubuntu moreover i dont know how to install totem codecs and others. I can't even get terminal commands for getting codecs online.
This is what I have done[URL]...I download Linux x64 RPM I follow the instructions from there [URL]..now problem now is that after installing the java software, I'm still prompted by Firefox that I have not installed java. I have enable Java in Firefox. This is how I check Edit->Preferences->Content.

I end up installing a fair number of plugins into the base IDE that is in the repositories. I would like to script the setup if I can, so it just opens up with everything I need. The 'ruby and rails' plugin is the one at the top of my list.
Installing simple plugins is pretty easy: wget, unzip and drop the files in the right directories. For 'ruby and rails' there are LOTS of files that get installed and dependencies to satisfy as well, so wget is probably not the most efficient way to get everything that is needed.
I decided not to use Photoshop in wine on my computer but to only use GIMP because I heard there is so many free plugins on the internet that makes it function almost exactly as Photoshop.I install plugins but then GIMP wont open at all.I did a complete fresh install of 10.04 because I was having this GIMP problem after installing gimpshop and installing Photoshop 7, I figured it was the Photoshop that caused the problem
So now with a complete fresh install GIMP still wont work with any plugins installed.is there something i need before I can add any plugins or whats going on?
I am having some trouble with RhythmBox. It runs fine until I install the package (Synaptics) Rhythmbox plugins 0.12.8-0. After I install this package and then open RhythmBox, the applications opens for a few seconds and then closes (terminates).Configuration is Ubuntu Lucid, 64 bit OS

And now I manage to use Yum and it is not working, I cant find out what is happening but yum loads the plugins and then freezes and is no reaction to ctrl-c or something to stop it so I am have to kill it dna finally got no result from any update processes. I would expect it to just start playing the station.If I select 'Radio' in rhythmbox's upper left panel, and -then- click 'tune in' on the shoutcast page next to the station I want, there's an entry made in the playist at that time, but then there's an error popup says: Couldn't Start Playback You do not have a decoder installed to handle this file. You might need to install the necessary plugins. Which is surprising. It's a shoutcast stream. It should just play. But anyway, I guess something didn't get installed in the default install.

I have downloaded the following CentOS 5.5 DVD iso files and burn the same using Nero Express:
1. CentOS-5.5-x86_64-bin-DVD-1of2.iso (4.09 GB)
2. CentOS-5.5-x86_64-bin-DVD-2of2.iso (412 MB)
I am trying installing it on a Dell Vostro 1400 laptop. I could boot the machine successfully with the DVD 01. After selecting the Installation method as "Local CDROM" it says: CD Not Found. The CentOS CD was not found in any of your CDROM drives. Please insert the CentOS CD and press OK to retry and it ejects the DVD in a splash. I tried mounting the DVD in a DVD drives in Windows XP SP2 and it is showing the content correctly. I also tried mounting the iso file with PowerISO Virtual Drive manager in Windows XP SP2 and it is mounting well.
I tried many times but of no success. Earlier I tried the following also (before downloading the DVD image files):
1. I successfully installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Server Edition on the same machine.
2. The same machine is also working fine with CentOS 5.5 Live CD.
I am trying to install gnome desktop on centos 5 vps. I am getting the following error when i ran this command yum groupinstall �GNOME Desktop Environment� to install gnome it gave me this error and i dont know wat to do now. i am able to connect to my server through vncviewer but the GUI is not working so the screen is black. I have purchased an IBM x336 server. The IBM website says that the server supports Linux. After doing some research, I decided to install CentOS 5.5 on this server. The goal is to use it as a internal web server for testing. My problem lies with the installation process, for some reason Linux does not see my hard drives. The server is equipped with two 36GB hot-swappable SCSI drives. When I get to the screen to choose where to install Linux, it only gives me options to install over a network, which I cannot do, because no hard drives are shown in the list. I have looked through the BIOS but I do not see any settings that would prevent the hard drives from showing. I have been able to boot to CentOS 5.5 using a LiveCD, but even then I still cannot access my hot-swappable SCSI drives.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently purchased a VPS based on CentOS 5.5 and only CentOS is available, One of the problems I have is that I have no experience with this distro at all. I want to install FlexGet [URL] but it depends on either Python version 2.5 or 2.6 which my install has version Python 2.4.3 installed. Now after doing some reading I have seen many post saying if I upgrade Python system wide It may break something else that is needed, and to install it side by side with the older version of Python and point the application to that specific version of Python it needs. The only problem with this is that I haven't got a clue how to do this.
So I was wondering if anyone could put together a very noob friendly guide for me to get the newer Python build installed side by side with the current one and then help me configure FlexGet from the .egg file it comes in installed using the newer version of Python it needs.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just installed nagios to a Cent 5.4 box. Everything is working so far except I want to add a plugin I found on nagios exchange. The file has a .pl extension. I am unsure how to add the plugin to the rest of nagios. Do I need to add it to a nagios folder and then define it. If I just try to run the pl file I get a error mesg. I am unsure if the error is caused by system misconfig or because the plugin is not installed. The plugin is check_dayime.pl and the error I get is Can't locate Date/Parse.pm Perl seems to be working as I can run simple perl scripts and perl -v spits out v 5.8.8
