General :: Installing And Running .exe Files In Ubuntu?

I own a motorcycle which has a power commander unit installed. Basicaly its a computer interface unit that allows us to install/load up air/fuel ratio's (maps) and do fine tuning via a laptop or computer.
So, now that I have made the move to Linux, I need to look into making the software program function with Linux. I am assuming that the software is designed for Windows, and probably a version for Mac as well.
Is there a way I can get the program modified to run within the Linux/Ubuntu OS?? The initial error I get when I attempt to install the program is ;

I've assembled a new computer to replace a dead Xp/Debian dual boot machine. I have been persuaded to go for Ubuntu as a Linux-only box, running Win7 as a virtual machine. I had some help setting it up with two discs in a Raid1 array, and it works pretty well. One of those discs is, I notice, set up as bootable.
But.... it is causing a major headache in respect of USB when emulating windows. I cannot use devices such as my USB printer at present, and I have an urgent task which requires printing capability and Windows. I have spent time trying to sort the USB problem without success and have decided to take an alternative route for the present.
I have purchased two extra discs which are not included in the Raid array, with the intention of using one of them for a Win7 installation, making the machine dual-boot for now. Eventually the intention is to revert to Linux only with a 4-disc Raid.
And don't know how to proceed. I formatted one of the new discs to NTFS using Ubuntu's Disc Utility, and tried to install Win7 on that disc. I get a warning that Windows cannot find a suitable disc on which to install. I've tried with XP as well, and this copies all its files before proudly announcing that there is no suitable disc space on this machine. Two new 1Tb discs and no space!

I'm trying to install Windows 7 on a system running Ubuntu 10.04 but I ran into problems because the hard drive is not NTFS formatted. How do I get this hard drive to NTFS so I can install Windows 7?
As a long time Windows user, I am stuck on the basics of installing and running downloaded Linux applications. I've tried to read a few tutorials but am still baffled. I am using a Puppy based boot CD and, of course, the applications that come with the Puppy all work fine. It is when I try to add something new that I become lost. Example: I just downloaded a Linux version of the Firefox browser.
I click on the downloaded file in the Download Manager and kinda expect the thing to give me a executable set-up file, but just get a whole bunch of files. One available option is to "extract" them. I create a folder to extract them to and "extract". With Firefox I see nothing in that folder. With a few other applications, I see an extracted list of files but and try to find one file that will magically start and install or boot an application, but nothing ever happens. So, how does one download , extract, install, and then run a basic application? The references I have found on the Internet tend to be rather old or more complex that my brain can handle.
I'm running RHEL 5 on a dell server. Recently, after some updates were installed, the server hangs when trying to start the gui (its set to run level 5)to get into the login screen. I can boot into run level 3 but get the same issue when I startx. CTRL-ALT-BackSpace doesn't return me to the command prompt. I get a blank screen with two letters and a blinking cursor. Which direction or log files to look at to start the troubleshooting.
I have recently bought an ASUS Eeepc 4g and i am having trouble trying to run/open jar. files. As i am only 14 Years of age i am having quite a time trying to sort out this problem.. i have opened the command console and tried all the codes to try open or create shortcuts to try open and run a jar.file but i am not succeeding, if you can help me please write back on this post giving me a step-step plan on how to fix this! and if so then great would make my life alot easier on this laptop. and by the way i need to try open this file called rsbot v1.23 as it is a jar.file i am unable to run or open it by saving to the disk.
i have two bash script files namely, "a.sh" and "b.sh". Both the files contain some commands to run, how can i actually run both files at the same time, instead of running the file one by one?
My hostmachine is Windows, and install Ubuntu on a virtual machine. I developed some program on Ubuntu. Suppose I want to transfer these files to a folder in Windows. How to find and get these files, which logically are stored in the virtual machine.
I have created some text executable files and put them on my desktop. In the way of background I created them in gedit. Then used chmod ugo+x (filename) to make them executable. One of them is a ping test to see if a printer is on. Text in file = ping 192.168.1.5. Others are to turn my laptop touchpad on and off. text in file = sudo modprobe -i psmouse. I have 2 questions about executable text files:
- When I click on an executable text file it present a window with 4 options (Run in terminal, display, cancel, run). Can I set a parameter or do something else so it just runs in terminal? I know I can set an option in Nautilus to run them but when I select run nothing seems to happen. In addition I would want to set this option on a case by case basis not globally in Nautilus. If there is an option or flag where it would run this file in terminal I would use it on my printer ping test.
- When I click on these executable text files to turn my touchpad on and off, the text within the file uses the sudo command so that requires that I input my password. After I click on either of these files a window appears with the 4 options (Run in terminal, display, cancel, run). I select run in terminal, a terminal window opens and requests my password. Subsequent to inputting my password the file executes fine.
Is there a way to set a parameter or do something else so I don't need to not only select the run in terminal option from (run in terminal, display, cancel, run) but also not to enter my password?
I have downloaded an update of mozilla firefox but don't know how to unzip it. Do I download it to disc(hard drive) or do I download to xarchiver? Then how do I unzip it.Do I have to unzip all files the same way?
I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 from the LiveCD--smooth install, OS looks great-elegant.Now, since I have to use dial-up, I need to install additional files from the LiveCD that aren't installed by default:
How do I get these files from the CD, and make them run on the Ubuntu installation? I've checked in the UI, and see various terms I don't yet understand. Do I extract the packages? Or do I open a pgm in Ubuntu, in which I specify the path to the files on the CD?
I'm going to use an external USRobotics 5637 USB modem that is supposed to work in Linux; just need to configure Ubuntu for this. I have the ISP DNS server numbers and modem is ready. I've seen online info, but I'm stuck at this very basic step.
OS: Debian testing Is it possible to instruct apt-get to install only some of the files in a package?.Here is the specific problem I'm facing: I have installed latex using the latex installer from CTAN. Now I'd like to install lyx but when apt-get install lyx reports it will install all the deb latex packages (it seems to be unaware latex is already installed). can I instruct apt-get to install only the lyx files with the extra 300MB or so of latex?.
I've tried googling for an answer to my probably extremely easy question, but since I'm a complete beginner I just do not understand whatever I find.Same goes for the whole linux wiki. After many frustrations with Windows I've been trying unsuccessfully to get any version of Linux to try out. However, I always get stuck at the same point: downloading the version works fine, but then getting it to work! Then I get frustrated with Linux for being too complex for the quite computer savvy in Windows, but not a programmer, person. And I returned to Windows. Repeat every 2 months.
So now I am here, please do not start talking to me as if I understand words like kernel - that's where I get stuck.What have I done:
- working in Win7 (illegal version, since I have a netbook and legal downloads are not available in the NL yet) - found and downloaded the 2 puppylinux files named lupu-500 and lupu_devx_500 - used Virtual Clonedrive to mount both files; looks like I have drive F: being recognized as a dvd-rom drive and drive G: named BD-rom drive. - I double click either one to open and I get: "Windows can't access this disk, etc." for F: or for G: "Please insert a disk, etc"

I am trying to install a program called PQLII (seismology related). I'm running Red Hat Linux Fedora 9. When I installed the OS, I selected "Everything". OK, so I google the 3 files listed and download them which I found on [URL]. None of the filenames listed matched precisely those listed, but I downloaded files that were as near a match as possible, i.e: libXfixes-4.0.3-3.fc9.i386.rpm libXinerama-1.0.3-1.fc9.i386.rpm glibc-2.8-3.i386.rpm
Being the logical type, I first try to install libXfixes-4.0.3-3.fc9.i386.rpm since it's listed first, but it generates: error: Failed dependencies: rtld(GNU_HASH) is needed by libXfixes-4.0.3-3.fc9 Ok, so then I run: rpm -ivh glibc-2.8-3.i386.rpm which generates: error: Failed dependencies: glibc-common = 2.8-3 is needed by glibc-2.8-3
I persevere, search for and download glibc-common-2.8-3.i386.rpm. rpm -ivh glibc-common-2.8-3.i386.rpm generates: error: Failed dependencies: glibc = 2.8-3 is needed by glibc-common-2.8-3 tzdata >= 2003a is needed by glibc-common-2.8-3 Am I downloading the wrong files?
I'm trying to make sure all my windows files stay put, so i'm wondering how to go about installing SLED 10. I can't log onto windows due to a virus infection, so i'm trying to install SLED10 and get all my files from there. I wanna be able to use windows as well as linux as well.
Until some time ago I had a dual Windows 7 and Fedora operating system, then I completely moved to Fedora. Recently I have become interested in Scientific Linux and wanted to install it besides my Fedora. I took a back up of all my data and formatted my HDD for a clean install of both of them. This is what I did:
First I installed Scientific Linux with these partitions (contents of /etc/fstab):

Then I went on to install Fedora 15; I kept the same primary and extended partitions but only changed the names of "/FedoraRoot" to "/" and "/" to "/SLRoot" in the above list while installing Fedora. I also chose the boot directory of Fedora to be /dev/sda1/ which I wanted to be the /boot file for both systems while I had chosen the boot file for Scientific Linux to be "/dev/sda".
Everything went well until the final step of copying the files an error came that some of files that Fedora wanted to install in /usr/share, /usr/lib64, /usr/bin, /etc/system..., /etc/issue..., /etc/redhat-release... and /etc/rpm are already present in the Scientific Linux format and so there is a conflict and it has to terminate!!! I must have made some strange mistakes in the definitions
I'm having trouble getting Alice 2.0 to run on my Ubuntu 10.10 machine. I extract the tarball to /opt as per usual and change ownership of the folder to myself so that I can actually run it.When moving into the folder in terminal I ./run-alice as I was told to in the README but it gets stuck. I have a emachines et1331g-03w I am trying to install Ubuntu on. I have tried both 8.04 32-bit and 9.10 32-bit desktop versions. They both just go to a black screen and hang when you try to run from the cd or install. I have not tried the 64-bit version yet.
In short, what I'd like to find is a workaround to install Grub2 onto a USB stick, from a PC running Windows, without using a GUI. After searching, I don't find any way to install Grub2 from Windows. I do have a nice little MS-DOS batch file that installs syslinux onto a USB stick. It's simple, fairly fool-proof, and I'd like to convert it to install Grub2.Did find an example of running grub-install without actually installing anything: grub-install --grub-setup=/bin/true /dev/sdaSo, IFAIKT, this just creates the Grub2 'boot.img' file, and maybe also modifies the 'core.img' file? Is that right? If so, then a little DOS utility to write a USB's MBR using the boot.img should work, yes?
However, I notice the boot.img file is 512 bytes. As I understand it, a drive's partition table is included in that space. I'd like to take that boot.img and use it to install Grub2 on any arbitrary USB stick, without altering the existing partition table. If I snip off the last 72 bytes so the image is only 440 bytes, it seems like this should work (assuming that every USB stick will have Grub2 installed in the /boot/grub subdirectory).If this sounds right, is there a DOS-based MBR update utility that you would recommend? I find several, such as MBRUtility, MBRWizard, and MBRFix, among others
I have just installed Ubuntu 9.10 netbook remix for my new laptop. I've tried at great length to install the correct drivers to get my wireless up and running. I'm currently trying to install the Broadcom driver for my 802.11g wireless card. I have downloaded the headers and tools for ubuntu and am proceeding with the instructions given on [URL].
But when I get to these steps I come unstuck # mkdir hybrid_wl # cd hybrid_wl # tar xzf <path>/hybrid-portsrc.tar
I can make the directory and open it but when it comes to the third step I get a message saying that there is no such file or directory.
When ever I install software it seems to install ok but when I run it all the menus are in another language and I can't understand it this has become very frustrating, I have gone to system / preferances / appearance and tried to change the font through there but it still seems to happen when I install software from synaptic package installer. so some of the software I have running on here like open office ect is impossible to read.
