General :: Conflicting /usr & /etc Files While Installing Fedora 15 And Scientific Linux 6.1

Aug 9, 2011

Until some time ago I had a dual Windows 7 and Fedora operating system, then I completely moved to Fedora. Recently I have become interested in Scientific Linux and wanted to install it besides my Fedora. I took a back up of all my data and formatted my HDD for a clean install of both of them. This is what I did:

First I installed Scientific Linux with these partitions (contents of /etc/fstab):

[Code]...

Then I went on to install Fedora 15; I kept the same primary and extended partitions but only changed the names of "/FedoraRoot" to "/" and "/" to "/SLRoot" in the above list while installing Fedora. I also chose the boot directory of Fedora to be /dev/sda1/ which I wanted to be the /boot file for both systems while I had chosen the boot file for Scientific Linux to be "/dev/sda".

Everything went well until the final step of copying the files an error came that some of files that Fedora wanted to install in /usr/share, /usr/lib64, /usr/bin, /etc/system..., /etc/issue..., /etc/redhat-release... and /etc/rpm are already present in the Scientific Linux format and so there is a conflict and it has to terminate!!! I must have made some strange mistakes in the definitions

Fedora :: Virtualbox 4.1 Not Installing - Error Regarding Conflicting Files

Jul 20, 2011

I have Fedora14. I have added virtualbox repository. On going through virtualbox.org site, I learned that virtualbox-4.1 released. I tired to update by yum update on 19.0.2011. No new package. I tried to download it from virtualbox.org (VirtualBox-4.1 Fedora14-i386). It failed on 19.0.2011 giving message that link is not operational. Today i.e. on 20.07.2011, I tired once again yum update. No new package. I tried to download from virtualbox.org. download succeed but it did not installed giving error message regarding conflicting files. Till not in repository?

General :: Installing Themes Is 'Conflicting' With Firefox's GUI?

May 31, 2011

I don't mean that it prevents me from using it, on the contrary, it changes all of the text boxes to the same color, making it hard if it's not a conflicting color. I want to install dark themes such as Cobra and Aero-ion but they conflict with Firefox, and I don't want to use Chromium. Do I have to stick with basic and default themes if I want to customize or switch to Google Chromium? Can someone point out a website that, well, has ones compatible with Firefox 4?

Red Hat :: Scientific Linux Install DVD Fails To Boot / No Matter What Options Are Passed

Feb 18, 2010

I hope I'm posting in the right forum for this (since Scientific Linux is based on RHEL)...I downloaded the Scientific Linux 5.4 "Boron" Install DVD's, and I can't get the DVD to boot. It gets to the point where it tries to initialize SMP (I have a Core 2 Quad Q8200 processor), and it just crashes and reboots my computer. I've tried disabling ACPI, APIC and APM using the noacpi, no apic, and apm=off options, one at a time, and all 3 at once (since the problem seems to be with APIC, because it fails to initialize on all 4 of the processor cores)...does anyone know what I'm doing wrong here, or how I can fix this? I really want to run Scientific Linux, but I can't since it crashes.

Red Hat :: Installing LibreOffice On Scientific 6.0?

May 8, 2011

AMD 64-bit quad core
Scientific Linux 6.0
Gnome 2.28

I have been trying to install openoffice, or libreoffice, and it's just an awful chore.

I tried using the gui tool. When I searched for libreoffice, I got nothing. When I searched for openoffice, I got a disorganized mess of separate apps, most of which seemed to have nothing to do with any office.

I got openoffice writer installed, then openoffice calc, but calc does not work.

So I downloaded libreoffice, and I am trying to go though the manual chore of getting it installed. But, the old openoffice is conflicting, and uninstalling open office is no easy task.

I went to the gui tool, and uninstalled the openoffice apps. But I when I try to install the desktop-integration RPMs, I keep getting a long series errors like this:

Quote:

file /usr/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/mimetypes/gnome-mime-application-vnd.sun.xml.writer.png from install of libreoffice3.3-redhat-menus-3.3-202.noarch conflicts with file from package openoffice.org-core-1:3.2.1-19.6.el6_0.5.x86_64

General :: Removing Linux And Installing XP

Oct 31, 2010

I've tried ubuntu, and could never get my sound working with that, so I tried fedora and had the exact same problem there. After a few days of trying to figure it out I decided to give up because it was really getting ridiculous, and I just want to go back to windows where things simply work.

Now the problem is that when I boot from the windows XP install disc, it doesnt recognise anything on my harddrive and just gives me the blue screen when I press any key (after showing me the list of partitions on my harddrive, all of which are <UNKNOWN>). I'm not sure what the problem is but it must be something to do with the fact that I have linux installed, so is there any way I can completely remove Fedora and just start fresh with XP?The only 2 options that the XP install disc gives me are 1) Install windows XP (I get blue screen), or 2) Recover windows XP installation (I dont have xp installed anyway).

Likewise, booting from my Fedora install disc only gives me the options of installing or rescuing Fedora, but not the option of removing it.

General :: Linux Distros Aren't Installing

Mar 21, 2011

I have an older laptop (hp pavilion dv1000), specs are:
Intel Pentium M 1.5 GHz
512mb RAM
60gb HD

Before attempting the below, I had XP installed on it, and it ran without issues, other than being a little slow.I'm looking to install a linux distro, but I've had a ridiculous amount of issues so far. Currently, there isn't anything installed on the machine. I've tried (booting via cd iso's):

1. Ubuntu 10.04.2-desktop-i386: Got to splash screen, then black screen. Never got to iso boot menu.

2. XUbuntu-10.04.2-desktop-i386: Got to splash screen, then boot menu. Chose the install option, and it went to a black screen. Nothing else happened.

3. openSUSE-11.4-KDE-LiveCD-i686: Installed all the way, except the graphics didn't behave correctly, the whole thing was glitchy and problematic, I decided to move on.

4. XUbuntu-10.04.2-alternate-i386: After a seemingly perfect installation, upon reboot I get this...
"The disk drive is not ready yet /dev/mapper/crystswap is not ready yet or not present", then gives me the option to wait or do a recovery. I tried waiting, it boots to a black screen. I tried the recovery, and now it doesn't boot at all.

Anyone have any good recommendations for a linux distro that should work out of the box with this laptop? I'd like to install NetBeans, firefox, and etc, so nothing too basic. Just something that will run quickly given my specs.

General :: How Linux Configuration Files Work?

Feb 5, 2011

I've been struggling for a couple of days to understand how configuration files work in Linux but haven't really found any clear information regarding that.My main question, as there is not a standard configuration file format in Linux, is how the format of a configuration file is understood by a Linux program? How the program reads its configuration file and how it understands its syntax (file format)? Also, a further question is how the program knows where its configuration file is being located?

For example inittab has its own "Identifier:RunLevel:Action:Command" format. How this is recognised by the "init" process?

General :: Windows - Linux: Can't Overwrite Files On Samba Store

Jun 10, 2010

I'm using CentOS 5.5 with smbclient 3.0.33-3.28-el5 (latest version in repo), and I can't overwrite files in my Samba store. I am not the admin for the Windows server that hosts the share, so there isn't anything I can do server side. But I do have write permission to the server. I know the server runs Windows XP or Server 2003; I don't know which. I can delete the file, and then copy the new version over, but I can't overwrite it. Using the cp command I'll get this error:

[jonescb@localhost ~]$ cp foo.txt /mnt/si_storage/foo.txt
cp: cannot create regular file `/mnt/si_storage/foo.txt': No such file or directory`

And if I edit a file on the server using vim, I can save it once, but if I save it again I get this: "/mnt/si_storage/foo.txt" E212: Can't open file for writing This is my /etc/fstab entry for the samba server: //192.168.1.2/SI_STORAGE /mnt/si_storage cifs username=myuser, password=mypass 0 0 I can overwrite files just fine on my XP machine. The CentOS box is the only one having problems.
