Mar 20, 2011I recently upgraded to OpenSUSE 11.4 GNOME on my ancient Compaq Armada E500 (Pentium II processor w/512MB of RAM) and now I'm trying to install my wireless driver with ndiswrapper. I've done this a couple of times before, but I'm having trouble getting ndiswrapper to find my driver. The driver is located in a folder on my desktop, but when I type the command 'ndiswrapper -i home/edwin/Desktop/WPC54G_40826/LSTINDS.INF' I get a message that there is no such file or directory at ndiswrapper's location, which is usr/sbin/ndiswrapper. So how do I get ndiswrapper either to look in the directory where the file is located or get a copy of LSTINDS.INF into the usr/sbin/ directory, which must be accessed as root?

Dec 30, 2009I am on a desktop that depends on a USB wireless adapter for it's internet, and I need to install the driver for it. I have downloaded the driver via another computer and isolated the .inf, .sys, and .bin files for the driver, and am trying to install ndiswrapper in order install the driver. the problem is I cannot get ndiswrapper to install, the 'make' command pulls in a laundry list of errors along with the 'make install' command. Is there something I'm missing? I have managed to update the kernel via another computer running the latest kernel, but still receive errors.

Feb 13, 2010I have just installed Ubuntu 9.10 netbook remix for my new laptop. I've tried at great length to install the correct drivers to get my wireless up and running. I'm currently trying to install the Broadcom driver for my 802.11g wireless card. I have downloaded the headers and tools for ubuntu and am proceeding with the instructions given on [URL].
But when I get to these steps I come unstuck

I can make the directory and open it but when it comes to the third step I get a message saying that there is no such file or directory.

Feb 22, 2010I am using an HP dv6 series laptop. The wireless works fine in Ubuntu 9.10 (must install the Broadcom STA wireless driver). When I try to use Kubuntu 9.10 my computer crashes when I try to install the driver. Is there any particular reason why it works in one and not the other?

I don't have access to a wired internet connection, but I can use the wireless on my windows 7 fine. It seems like there is no driver for it to work on ubuntu, and since I don't have an internet connection while in ubuntu, it seems I can't update it of course because I need internet to update. My wireless network does NOT have a password if that even means anything for this. I have the exe installer for the driver for it but I don't know how I'm supposed to get the INF file or whatever.

But my wireless works in windows. So I have downloaded the latest Broadcom STA wireless drivers for linux and have tried to follow this tutorial to install it. But when I get to:

Fedora :: Installing Driver For Wireless Card RT3070
Oct 3, 2009I am very new to Linux and need to install a driver for my wireless card. I am trying to install the RT3070 v2.0.1.0 driver from Ralink. I am running Fedora 2.6.29.4-167.fc11.i686.PAE. I have read the thread in the Solutions section about this driver, but unfortunately this is somewhat above my levels of comprehension, and I don't really know where to start.

Jan 2, 2010I have a Dell Inspiron E1505, which has the Dell Wireless 1505 (Broadcom) card. To run the card, I installed the Broadcom STA wireless driver, which seems to activate the wireless card OK. The problem is that once I installed that driver my onboard Ethernet card was deactivated (and yes, it is enabled in BIOS). I had to remove the wireless driver to get the Ethernet back. Does anyone have ideas? I haven't found this problem listed elsewhere. I am running Ubuntu 9.04 with no other problems.

I`m now facing some problems with my new OS :
1. The driver for my wireless network card isn't recognized although I have installed the recommended driver which was in Ubuntu Hardware Driver section.
2. When I connect my laptop to my TV using HDMI port, the screen is OK but there is no sound!
3. When by any reason my network cable is unplugged, the whole network service goes down and I have to restart the system.

Mar 17, 2010The relevant details of my setup are:
Samsung R522 laptop
Realtek RTL8192E wireless network controller (PCI)
Fedora 12, kernel 2.6.32.9-70.fc12.i686 (automatically updated using software update)
My problem is that my wireless card has never worked - basically there aren't any widely available linux drivers, and there are many threads on getting the RTL8192E to work on many different forums, e.g. here, but none specifically for Fedora, so I think that this thread could potentially guide many more users. FYI, my hardwired network connection works perfectly.
Fantastically however, by emailing Realtek support, they'll send you their Linux driver, which most people have claimed works perfectly (although why they haven't just put it on their website is beyond me). SO, I've got a Linux driver for my wireless card. When Realtek emailed me to send me the driver, they said to just 'cd' into the driver directory, then do
su
make clean
make
make install
reboot
./wlan0up or ./wlan1up
OK, so I tried to do this and get the following error:
make: *** /lib/modules/2.6.32.9-70.fc12.i686/build: No such file or directory. Stop.
make: *** [all] Error 2
I don't know enough about linux to understand this error. I really don't want to have to recompile my kernel, and I hope there is some way to install this driver with not too much hassle. How to overcome this error, and install my wireless driver so I can get wireless network access on my Fedora 12 operating system. I've found Fedora 12 really easy to use so far, but this is proving quite hard!

Oct 1, 2010I have installed xubuntu 10.04 on a HP Pavilion dv1049ea and am having trouble installing the drivers for the graphics card. When installing i had to use the boot option -xforcevesa in order to get the screen working. Now that it is installed there is constant screen flicker but apart from that all other aspects of the system are working fine. In the display menu i am unable to change the refresh rate. How do i change the running driver from vesa to the correct intel driver? The graphics card is an Intel Graphics 82852/82855.

May 8, 2011I own a motorcycle which has a power commander unit installed. Basicaly its a computer interface unit that allows us to install/load up air/fuel ratio's (maps) and do fine tuning via a laptop or computer.
So, now that I have made the move to Linux, I need to look into making the software program function with Linux. I am assuming that the software is designed for Windows, and probably a version for Mac as well.
Is there a way I can get the program modified to run within the Linux/Ubuntu OS?? The initial error I get when I attempt to install the program is ;

General :: Turn On SHMConfig And Get Touch-pad Driver Running?
Feb 2, 2011I've installed Debian Lenny ("stable") on my Dell Inspiron 640m laptop, with Win7 in another partition and data in a third VFAT partition. I want to tame the ####ing Synaptics touchpad.
So I installed xserver-xorg-input-synaptics, which has put syndaemon in /usr/bin. I understand that this app disables the touch-pad while typing, just what I want.
But syndaemon doesn't run at bootup, and when I try to run it manually I get:
<syndaemon> returns error "Can't access shared memory area. SHMConfig disabled?"
<man syndaemon> warns "needs SHMConfig "on" in your XOrg/XFree86 Synaptics Touchpad configuration"

General :: Installing Win7 On Machine Running Ubuntu ?
May 15, 2011I've assembled a new computer to replace a dead Xp/Debian dual boot machine. I have been persuaded to go for Ubuntu as a Linux-only box, running Win7 as a virtual machine. I had some help setting it up with two discs in a Raid1 array, and it works pretty well. One of those discs is, I notice, set up as bootable.
But.... it is causing a major headache in respect of USB when emulating windows. I cannot use devices such as my USB printer at present, and I have an urgent task which requires printing capability and Windows. I have spent time trying to sort the USB problem without success and have decided to take an alternative route for the present.
I have purchased two extra discs which are not included in the Raid array, with the intention of using one of them for a Win7 installation, making the machine dual-boot for now. Eventually the intention is to revert to Linux only with a 4-disc Raid.
And don't know how to proceed. I formatted one of the new discs to NTFS using Ubuntu's Disc Utility, and tried to install Win7 on that disc. I get a warning that Windows cannot find a suitable disc on which to install. I've tried with XP as well, and this copies all its files before proudly announcing that there is no suitable disc space on this machine. Two new 1Tb discs and no space!

Oct 23, 2009As a long time Windows user, I am stuck on the basics of installing and running downloaded Linux applications. I've tried to read a few tutorials but am still baffled. I am using a Puppy based boot CD and, of course, the applications that come with the Puppy all work fine. It is when I try to add something new that I become lost. Example: I just downloaded a Linux version of the Firefox browser.
I click on the downloaded file in the Download Manager and kinda expect the thing to give me a executable set-up file, but just get a whole bunch of files. One available option is to "extract" them. I create a folder to extract them to and "extract". With Firefox I see nothing in that folder. With a few other applications, I see an extracted list of files but and try to find one file that will magically start and install or boot an application, but nothing ever happens. So, how does one download , extract, install, and then run a basic application? The references I have found on the Internet tend to be rather old or more complex that my brain can handle.

My mic, on the otherhand, doesn't seem to be nothing too special. It plugs into the back of the computer right next to the speakers. I've searched everywhere for how to fix these, but can't seem to find anything that works. As for my mic, I've tried installing the... linux modules backport, etc... through synaptic, nothing. I've gone through alsamixer, and sound properties. The only thing I can think of, is that the computer isn't reading my mic.
Sorry if this post is kind of scattered, but I've gotten 2 hours of sleep last night, and not able to sleep again, Also, if anyone can point me in a direction of IM services that allow AIM, MSN, and YIM chat support through my friends on the windows OS. I've heard of Skype, but I don't want to seem too demanding to ask them all to download a program just to speak with / see me.
