General :: Installing Mounted .iso Files Of PuppyLinux

Jul 13, 2010

I've tried googling for an answer to my probably extremely easy question, but since I'm a complete beginner I just do not understand whatever I find.Same goes for the whole linux wiki. After many frustrations with Windows I've been trying unsuccessfully to get any version of Linux to try out. However, I always get stuck at the same point: downloading the version works fine, but then getting it to work! Then I get frustrated with Linux for being too complex for the quite computer savvy in Windows, but not a programmer, person. And I returned to Windows. Repeat every 2 months.

So now I am here, please do not start talking to me as if I understand words like kernel - that's where I get stuck. What have I done:

- working in Win7 (illegal version, since I have a netbook and legal downloads are not available in the NL yet)
- found and downloaded the 2 puppylinux files named lupu-500 and lupu_devx_500
- used Virtual Clonedrive to mount both files; looks like I have drive F: being recognized as a dvd-rom drive and drive G: named BD-rom drive.
- I double click either one to open and I get: "Windows can't access this disk, etc." for F: or for G: "Please insert a disk, etc"

I know this is a long post, but please help me or you're losing me to Microsoft again!

Mounted second hard disk still report 0 bytes even when files are already deleted in rhel5 . I already checked the lost+found and trash . It only happen that disk space on deleted files cannot be recovered after the disk reach full capacity , but if it does not reach yet its full capacity , deleting files will recover the disk space . The format of the disk I have mounted is ext3 also have tried ntfs using fuse but the same problem , once allowed to reach 0 bytes I can no longer recover space with deleting files and had to reformat and restore the backup

OpenSUSE Hardware :: CD / DVD Is Mounted But Files Are Not Readable

Mar 30, 2010

I have a little problem using CDs or DVDs. If I put a disc in my DVD-Recorder it is mounted and the content of the disc is shown in dolphin (or any other programm for that matter). The names and attributes (size, date etc) of the folders and files are all correctly shown - except it is a multisession-disc, then there are only files of one of the sessions (probably the first) shown. The permissions say that the files are readable (user is my useraccount and group is "root").However, if I try to open a file on the disc, the program (for example sm-player if it is a video) freezes or displays a message that the file is corrupted (for example open office if it is a textfile).Trying to copy a file from the disc to the harddrive results in an error that the file is not readable, but there is a file created on the harddrive - it has the correct name but the size is 0B.Burning a disc with k3b creates also an error, although the disc is correctly recognized - but as soon as the burning should start an error occurs.I'm pretty sure that it is not an hardware-issue, since this DVD-Drive has worked fine under openSUSE11.1-32bit and it still works if I put a bootable disc in. There is no problem runnig a live-CD and I had no problems with the drive when I installed the very same system that I'm working with from a disc.Logging in as root doesn't change a thing.

I tried to search if this problem was solved before, but all I found were problems where the disc-drive wouldn't mount at all ... so please, if anyone knows a solution or at least a place where I can found one - I really have no idea what to do about this.

Ubuntu :: Pulling Of Large Files From A Mounted Directory Into RAM?

Oct 18, 2010

I'm having a bit of an issue with Lucid installed via Wubi. I stuck the OS on its own partition (30 GB in size), and don't store any large files in the Ubuntu file system (when I download something large I move it to another hard drive.) I don't have anything wacky or esoteric installed on my system.

I've been consistently having a problem where, after a few hours or a few days of being booted up, Ubuntu warns me that my available HD space is dangerously small. The amount of available HD space Ubuntu sees then shrinks from a few GB to nothing within a few minutes, and the only way I can seem to solve this is to reboot. Taking a closer look at what's happening, my Home folder balloons in size until there's no more writable space recognized. But there are no files being created or added to, so it looks like there's a bug of some sort. This SEEMS to be correlated with watching videos (or maybe it's the pulling of large files from a mounted directory into RAM? My videos are all on another HD, as mentioned before). I can generally go a few days without getting the "low space" message, but I can't seem to make it through a full 2-hour movie without getting the error.

Fedora :: Back Up Files From Home And From Another Mounted Directory On System?

May 28, 2010

I am using back in time to back up files from home and from another mounted directory on my system (ntfs). The back-ups are occurring automatically and appear to be complete; but, I cannot delete old back-up snapshots in the backintime GUI Also with sudo nautilus or as root in terminal with (rmdir) I cannot delete the snapshots. My drive is filling up and rather than uninstalling back in time, I would like to simply delete the unneeded snapshots. How can I delete these files? Is there an rsync file that I should configure to delete these? My expectation of backintime was that it would back-up at the requested frequency and not create complete duplicate copies of the files, but, use symbolic links to unchanged files. How can I verify if this is the case? Does the cron file control this>

Ubuntu :: Backup Snapshots Show Up On The Desktop As Mounted Files?

Jan 20, 2011

I am using Ubuntu 10.04 x86_64. I log in to the machine using nfs. For a problem with mounting my home directory, I had to copy all the contents of my home directory (including all configuration files) from a recent snapshot on to itself. That is, I did something like,

Code:
cp -r /home/user/user /home/user

All of my recent data and program configurations were in /home/user/user. So after the copy operation, I logged out and logged back in again to see that all my configuration and data was restored to what I wanted. But the problem is that now on my desktop I see hundreds of mounted volumes. These are coming from an hourly/weekly snapshot program. The tech support guys for my lab have suggested copying all relevant data to a backup and then deleting the home directory altogether. But I don't want to configure all programs all over again. I think I should be able to get rid of the problem by editing/deleting one or more desktop configuration files. I just don't know which ones. I tried looking around the gconf-editor but was overwhelmed at the amount of information on there.

CentOS 5 Server :: NFS Mount Of Loop Mounted ISO's Showing No Files

I'm having a problem accessing files via nfs where an iso has been mounted through the loop device on the nfs server. Basically what I am attempting to do is access the 6 CentOS 5.2 ISO's via NFS from one of my client machines. The client is able to mount the share and see its sub directories leading up to the mount point of the ISO, but the contents of the mounted ISO image are simply not visible (on the client, they are visible on the server).

Server config (CentOS 5):

NFS is working correctly for other mounts between these two boxes, however.

General :: Endless Failed Dependencies Installing RPM Files

Feb 19, 2010

I am trying to install a program called PQLII (seismology related). I'm running Red Hat Linux Fedora 9. When I installed the OS, I selected "Everything". When I run:
rpm -ivh PQL-2009-246.i386.rpm
It returns:
error: Failed dependencies:
libXFixes.so.3 is needed by PQL-2009-246
libXinerama.so.1 is needed by PQL-2009-246
rtld(GNU_HASH) is needed by PQL-2009-246

OK, so I google the 3 files listed and download them which I found on [URL]. None of the filenames listed matched precisely those listed, but I downloaded files that were as near a match as possible, i.e:
libXfixes-4.0.3-3.fc9.i386.rpm
libXinerama-1.0.3-1.fc9.i386.rpm
glibc-2.8-3.i386.rpm

Being the logical type, I first try to install libXfixes-4.0.3-3.fc9.i386.rpm since it's listed first, but it generates:
error: Failed dependencies:
rtld(GNU_HASH) is needed by libXfixes-4.0.3-3.fc9
Ok, so then I run:
rpm -ivh glibc-2.8-3.i386.rpm
which generates:
error: Failed dependencies:
glibc-common = 2.8-3 is needed by glibc-2.8-3

I persevere, search for and download glibc-common-2.8-3.i386.rpm.
rpm -ivh glibc-common-2.8-3.i386.rpm
generates:
error: Failed dependencies:
glibc = 2.8-3 is needed by glibc-common-2.8-3

General :: Installing Additional Files From Ubuntu 10.04 LiveCD?

I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 from the LiveCD--smooth install, OS looks great-elegant.Now, since I have to use dial-up, I need to install additional files from the LiveCD that aren't installed by default:

[LiveCD]:poolmainwwvdial wvdial_1.60.3_i386.deb

How do I get these files from the CD, and make them run on the Ubuntu installation? I've checked in the UI, and see various terms I don't yet understand. Do I extract the packages? Or do I open a pgm in Ubuntu, in which I specify the path to the files on the CD?

Networking :: Programs Cannot Create Temp Files On Nfs-mounted NTFS File System?

Jun 14, 2010

I have an NTFS file system nfs-automounted on our RedHat servers. Users can read and write to the file system no problem, and can create new files, edit them, and delete them to their heart's content. The only issue is that utilities such as "dos2unix" cannot create temporary working files:

$ dos2unix events.0818.dat
dos2unix: converting file events.0818.dat to UNIX format ...
Failed to open output temp file: Operation not permitted
dos2unix: problems converting file events.0818.dat

This isn't limited to "dos2unix"; any other utility that creates a temporary working file gets the same problem. If I copy the file to a local file system like /tmp, it works fine. Here's the kicker: this works fine on Solaris systems. I can take the "dos2unix" utility over to a Solaris system that has that exact same NTFS file system automounted via NFS, and it works. No issues creating temporary working files at all.

General :: Conflicting /usr & /etc Files While Installing Fedora 15 And Scientific Linux 6.1

Aug 9, 2011

Until some time ago I had a dual Windows 7 and Fedora operating system, then I completely moved to Fedora. Recently I have become interested in Scientific Linux and wanted to install it besides my Fedora. I took a back up of all my data and formatted my HDD for a clean install of both of them. This is what I did:

First I installed Scientific Linux with these partitions (contents of /etc/fstab):

[Code]...

Then I went on to install Fedora 15; I kept the same primary and extended partitions but only changed the names of "/FedoraRoot" to "/" and "/" to "/SLRoot" in the above list while installing Fedora. I also chose the boot directory of Fedora to be /dev/sda1/ which I wanted to be the /boot file for both systems while I had chosen the boot file for Scientific Linux to be "/dev/sda".

Everything went well until the final step of copying the files an error came that some of files that Fedora wanted to install in /usr/share, /usr/lib64, /usr/bin, /etc/system..., /etc/issue..., /etc/redhat-release... and /etc/rpm are already present in the Scientific Linux format and so there is a conflict and it has to terminate!!! I must have made some strange mistakes in the definitions

General :: /dev/shm Not Mounted /dev Busy

Mar 2, 2010

Recently I was trying out a boot disk I had made, and basically, I switched it off several times due to it booting the completely wrong kernel. Now, I'm getting to the stage "Checking File systems" and then comes up [Failed]. I then get a message saying Reboot required, and that it will reboot in 15 seconds, just a few seconds before it reboots I get "/dev/shm not mounted, /dev busy" or something similar.

I've booted up my sysresccd, ran "fsck.ext4 -fcv /dev/sda2" to force a check and scan for any bad blocks, it came up clean, then I rebooted and got the same error, so I copied the kernel and system.map over to /boot to make sure there's no corruption and reinstalled initscripts and util-linux-ng, rebooted, same error.Tried different kernels, I've checked fstab and menu.lst, no problems there, so I still don't get why I still get the same problem.

General :: NFS FS Mounted With 'noac' Is Too Slow?

Sep 27, 2010

This may be to specific of a scenario, but it is real.- I use an NFS mounted FS as a destination for my backups from multiple clients. - If the FS is mounted with 'noac' which in effect disables write caching, backup performance is horrible 40kb/sec.- If I remove this mount option, backup performance is fine 12mb/sec. However, because of write caching, my cpu io wait time increases (up to 40%) and performancen the entire host suffers unacceptably. My initial impression/solution is to find a way to enabling write caching e.g. do not specify 'noac' and limit OS write cache size
