OpenSUSE Multimedia :: .mov Files In SLED10.1 Without Libdvdcss?

Mar 24, 2011

We use SLED10.1 as the base O/S for our Point-of-sale registers and we have run into the need for these registers to play .mov files that are sent down from the corporate office. The base installed KAFFEINE or REALPLAYER won't play those extensions. Can anyone recommend a good .mov player that doesn't require the libdvdcss libraries. (We can't use those for legal reasons). I tried downloading the latest XINE but got lost in RPM-hell and finally gave up.

General :: Osx - Move A Bunch Of Hardlinked Files From A Box Onto OS X Mac And Preserve The Hardlinks?

Dec 8, 2010

I have an rsnapshot backup that I need to move off of a corrupt Linux file system. I need to preserve the internal hardlinks. I've tried rsync -H and using a newer rsync and neither preserve the hardlinks on OS X.

I tried to get rsync -H working and I've isolated it to the file system mounted. I can preserve hard links copying locally (HFS to HFS) but it doesn't preserve when I try to rsync off of a SMB file system mount or AFP file system mount. Is there some mount option solution to getting OS X rsync to obey -H?

General :: Windows - Preserve Diacritics When Cross-mounting Drives To Windows7

Sep 5, 2011

A friend backed up an in accessible Windows 7 partition to a big (close to 1TB) external USB drive using KNOPIX. Unfortunately the umlauts and accents in the file names of his extensive music collection now appear garbled (UTF8 vs ISO xxx, I guess) when he accesses that drive from Windows. My guess is he needs to mount the two drives in a 'special way,' that takes the diacritics translation into account, on KNOPIX? Or do you have another idea what went wrong? This is the second part of a windows/linux problem I'm having. See how-does-one-mount-a-partition-in-windows-7 for the other part

General :: Gentoo - Ubuntu - Can Preserve My LVM/RAID Devices - Or Do Reformat ?

May 23, 2010

I've got a Gentoo box that I'm interested in switching over to an Ubuntu box.

I currently have the partitions laid out using a mixture of RAID (mdadm) and LVM2, as specified in this document [1].

Ideally I'd like to just wipe out the non /home partition, as it's got data I'd like to keep.

Is it possible to reuse the current setup, or do I need to restart? vgdisplay, vgchange -a y, etc don't yield any results from the Ubuntu LiveCD, and I'm wary to run any commands that might wipe my data.

General :: Installing But Saving Windows XP?

Apr 12, 2010

What would be the best way to install Linux such that I could also on occasion use the Windows XP that came with my new computer? Ubuntu with XP running in Wine? -- so I can use both at the same time? Dual partition to dual boot? I tried putting wubi Ubuntu installed on top of Windows, but have problems with grub crashing and have been told I had best not install Linux on top of Windows. But if I install Linux as the primary OS, how best save the option to do some Windows? I want to do astronomy stuff, so am hoping Ubuntu is good for science, if not, I can use RedHat.

I do not have a Windows XP install disk from the vendor, so if I wipe out the XP install, it might be trouble for me to reinstall windows, so I don't know if I should just copy the hard disk to an external drive. The computer does not have my personal files on it yet.) Is my current idea of running Windows in Wine feasible? Would I need to reinstall Windows by copying back the files from an external hard drive?

General :: Installing And Running .exe Files In Ubuntu?

May 8, 2011

I own a motorcycle which has a power commander unit installed. Basicaly its a computer interface unit that allows us to install/load up air/fuel ratio's (maps) and do fine tuning via a laptop or computer.

So, now that I have made the move to Linux, I need to look into making the software program function with Linux. I am assuming that the software is designed for Windows, and probably a version for Mac as well.

Is there a way I can get the program modified to run within the Linux/Ubuntu OS?? The initial error I get when I attempt to install the program is ;

General :: Installing Mounted .iso Files Of PuppyLinux

Jul 13, 2010

I've tried googling for an answer to my probably extremely easy question, but since I'm a complete beginner I just do not understand whatever I find.Same goes for the whole linux wiki. After many frustrations with Windows I've been trying unsuccessfully to get any version of Linux to try out. However, I always get stuck at the same point: downloading the version works fine, but then getting it to work! Then I get frustrated with Linux for being too complex for the quite computer savvy in Windows, but not a programmer, person. And I returned to Windows. Repeat every 2 months.

So now I am here, please do not start talking to me as if I understand words like kernel - that's where I get stuck. What have I done:

- working in Win7 (illegal version, since I have a netbook and legal downloads are not available in the NL yet)
- found and downloaded the 2 puppylinux files named lupu-500 and lupu_devx_500
- used Virtual Clonedrive to mount both files; looks like I have drive F: being recognized as a dvd-rom drive and drive G: named BD-rom drive.
- I double click either one to open and I get: "Windows can't access this disk, etc." for F: or for G: "Please insert a disk, etc"

I know this is a long post, but please help me or you're losing me to Microsoft again!

General :: Installing On An Existing Windows RAID0

Dec 19, 2010

I administer a small network of computers connected to a windows 2003 server. The machines Dual boot Windows XP and CentOS 5.

My question is this. The machines are being upgraded to HP Z800 workstations. These workstations come with 2 1TB drives setup on a hardware RAID0. Can I install Linux on these machines, using the RAID0? Can I do an install as if it was just one hard drive? The machines came with Windows7 and I'd like to keep it intact including the RAID0. Can I do the install where it resizes the partition, adding the linux partition to the "drive".

If I can't use the existing windows RAID0 to install CentOS I was thinking of just installing another hard drive in the machines for it. This brings up another question, what would happen if I moved my Linux drive from one of the old workstations and put it in the new workstation, would it boot? I know windows wont boot like this because of the hdd controller drivers and I have a sneaky work around for this anyway but am not wanting to transfer the windows installation.
