How do you determine the source and version of a device driver in your linux box? (The wifi driver, for instance.) In windows you can find that info using "device manager". I suppose there is some corresponding tool in linux.

The server is a Dell R710 with CentOS 5.4 X86_64 installed. I suspect it's the virtual CD device of the iDrac6 but not sure. How Can I identify which USB device triggering these warning? View 1 Replies View RelatedI am running 9.10 latest updates (as far as I know) My problem is with my usb connections.I cant connect different usb devices to the same usb ports if a device had been previously connected to it. IE: I have to keep my camera connected to one particular port. If I disconnect it and connect anything to it, it cant be seen. It doesnt matter if I reboot. Is there a way to clear out any memory that stores the usb port assignments?

Well i am out of that problem but now i want to format the xp from my linux i.e i don't want any other os in this hard disk apart from linux (ubuntu 9.10) so is it possible to format the xp from linux.
will it affect the mbr ? and if yes then wat is the solution for it ? also the drive containing xp should be available for my storage purpose afterwards.
In the midst of an epic, hours-long saga of attempting to reinstall Kubuntu 11.04 and get my GRUB menu back in order to dual boot with Windows 7 (I accidentally lost the rambling thread I previously typed, so I'm not going to even tell the back story unless prompted), my installation progress bar seems to be sitting at a solid 86%, reading "Restoring previously installed packages...", something I've never seen before. It's sat there for two hours, not moving a pixel. Is there anything I can do at this point? I've been up for hours trying to do this, and I'm about ready to give up on Kubuntu and even seeing my Windows system again.

The upgrade crashes with the "the root for the previously installed system was not found". I've also tried upgrading using YUM and was also unsuccessful. I have two problems. I installed a RHEL variant (scientific linux) on an already dual boot system with ubuntu and vista.
It replaced GRUB with (I think an older) GRUB version and to add to that I cannot see my ubuntu ditro anymore. is there a way of reinstalling the GRUB that came with ubuntu then adding the RHEL distro to it?
my second problem is that I cannot figure out how to enable wake on lan in scientific linux (RHEL). on ubuntu I would just write a small script and update all runlevels to run it at startup. what is the alternative on redhat?
I'm currently running 9.10 and am anticipating upgrading to 10.04 when it is released next week. I am however, running several packages from PPA's that were simply not working well at the versions included with 9.10 (I know specifically the 64-bit version of Flash and Wine are setup this way).
Since these installs are out of the scope of the official Ubuntu sources, how are these handled when I upgrade? More importantly, since some of these packages were just installed as a temporary fix until 10.04 came out, for some of them I'd like to remove the PPA version and reinstall the default version (since for several of them the 10.04 version has caught up to where it needs to be). Is there any way to identify all packages installed from PPA's on the system?
I have a printer connected locally to my Debian box. It runs fine via cupsd.I am also running a Windows 2003 VMware guest which I would like to use the printer (use as a local printer, not a network printer).
VMware offers a connection via USB, so it should work. The printer I have plugged locally into the Debian host is recognised by the Windows 2003 guest, but it won't print. I get an error message saying that the printer is still connected to the host OS, and that I need to remove (or presumably disable) the host driver before the guest can use the printer.
So how can I find out which printer driver/module is being used by the Debian host to connect to this printer? And what is the best way to temporarily disable it, while my VMware guest is running?

The Overview tab also correctly lists my three known network devices (listed below), as does the Hardware Information utility. This is the output of lspci, and as far as I can tell, is accurate and complete. So what has YaST seen that it can't identify?

I have a ati firepro v3700, and I installed the driver I think. I did the fglrx install, and it said it worked. I believe it because prior to doing that my video was off and very laggy, but now it's fine.
My problems are these: yast won't identify my card in the hardware section, and it won't let me turn on 3d effects. I know most people wouldn't care, and I wouldn't, except I use linux to do FEA and CFD research. I used ubuntu before no problem, but some of the programs I used weren't supported.
For years I have used a Slax live CD on a laptop to clone internal HDDs to USB HDDs. I recently purchased a Sony VPCF136FM laptop with Intel Core i7 CPU. It apparently has USB 3.0 ports. The problem is the USB ports are dead with Slax. There is a USB devise driver available for Windows 7 from Sony but nothing for Linux operating systems. Can this driver be ported to Linux? It is an exacutable (XXX.exe). The chip for the USB Host is from Renesas Electronics (no help there, either). Where can I find a device driver to use with Slax and how would I install it?
