Red Hat / Fedora :: GRUB Of Previously Installed Distro / Enable Wake On Lan In Scientific (RHEL)?

Jan 2, 2010

I have two problems. I installed a RHEL variant (scientific linux) on an already dual boot system with ubuntu and vista.

It replaced GRUB with (I think an older) GRUB version and to add to that I cannot see my ubuntu ditro anymore. is there a way of reinstalling the GRUB that came with ubuntu then adding the RHEL distro to it?

my second problem is that I cannot figure out how to enable wake on lan in scientific linux (RHEL). on ubuntu I would just write a small script and update all runlevels to run it at startup. what is the alternative on redhat?

Red Hat :: Very Slow Terminal Commands In RHEL-5.4 / Scientific

Apr 8, 2010

I have a new installation of Scientific Linux, which is basically RHEL/CentOS 5.4.

Everything works fine with it, its nice to see KDE3.5 again BUT

certain commands in cli (console, konsole, xterm whatever) take an age to run. The worst offender is vim, which takes about 20 seconds to open fstab for example. Even mkdir takes about 10 seconds to run.

I am used to these type of operations being almost instantaneous, so there is obviously something wrong here, but I can't imagine what.

General :: Delete The Partition Of The Distro That Installed GRUB

Sep 29, 2009

I have two distros and windows installed. I only want one distro (I have decided on Ubuntu) and windows. But, the other distro, the one that I want to eradicate is the last one installed and it is its GRUB in the MBR.

I know what happens from experience if I just delete that partition with a liveCD - GRUB won't boot anything on reboot.

What do I need to do from within Ubuntu or the other Linux before deleting the partition of the second distro so that I have a working GRUB when I reboot ?

Ubuntu :: Restoring Previously Installed Packages (86 Percent)

Jun 25, 2011

In the midst of an epic, hours-long saga of attempting to reinstall Kubuntu 11.04 and get my GRUB menu back in order to dual boot with Windows 7 (I accidentally lost the rambling thread I previously typed, so I'm not going to even tell the back story unless prompted), my installation progress bar seems to be sitting at a solid 86%, reading "Restoring previously installed packages...", something I've never seen before. It's sat there for two hours, not moving a pixel. Is there anything I can do at this point? I've been up for hours trying to do this, and I'm about ready to give up on Kubuntu and even seeing my Windows system again.

Fedora Installation :: Install Another Distro But Keep Fedora's Grub

Dec 24, 2009

im still relatively new to linux and fedora, and i was wondering if it would be possible to install another distro on an external hard disk and keep fedora's grub. i tried this once before but the following things happened: (fedora is on my internal hard disk) the installation to the external hard drive went well, and i set the boot partition to C: because thats the first partition however when i unplugged my external hard drive, and proceeded to boot into fedora, nothing happened. my bios screen flashed and then a blank screen with a cursor. is there anyway to keep Fedora's grub where it is and just install another linux distro without that said distro's grub and add that distro to the grub list in fedora manually? or even boot to my external from the bios itself (because mine can do that)

Anyway, according to the release notes, RHEL 6 has a PAE enabled kernel by default. Great... But that leaves me wondering why uname report SMP. Further, I'm provisioning some systems for QA use, and they're asking that PAE is disabled. My thinking is that since RHEL 6 requires PAE capability to install, there may be no way to disable it and the googling I've done seems to support this. tl;dr Why does a default kernel with PAE enabled report SMP on RHEL 6?

Fedora 15 uses scidavis (Scientific Data Analysis and Visualization) taken from Fedora 14. If you try to build the native rpm package, an error occurs in building the documentation. A 1-line sed in the spec file solves the problem:

Code:

sed -i "s/VER-REL/`rpm -q docbook-dtds|sed "s/^[^0-9]*//;s/.noarch//;

First, is there a difference between a Beowulf cluster and a cluster that has single-system image ("SSI," e.g. using openSSI or LinuxPMI)? If so, what's the difference? Second, if there is a difference between Beowulf and SSI, which one is better for scientific computing? Third, does using Eucalyptus make sense for scientific computing or is this more suitable for IO-oriented operations such as web service or databases

General :: Conflicting /usr & /etc Files While Installing Fedora 15 And Scientific Linux 6.1

Aug 9, 2011

Until some time ago I had a dual Windows 7 and Fedora operating system, then I completely moved to Fedora. Recently I have become interested in Scientific Linux and wanted to install it besides my Fedora. I took a back up of all my data and formatted my HDD for a clean install of both of them. This is what I did:

First I installed Scientific Linux with these partitions (contents of /etc/fstab):

[Code]...

Then I went on to install Fedora 15; I kept the same primary and extended partitions but only changed the names of "/FedoraRoot" to "/" and "/" to "/SLRoot" in the above list while installing Fedora. I also chose the boot directory of Fedora to be /dev/sda1/ which I wanted to be the /boot file for both systems while I had chosen the boot file for Scientific Linux to be "/dev/sda".

Everything went well until the final step of copying the files an error came that some of files that Fedora wanted to install in /usr/share, /usr/lib64, /usr/bin, /etc/system..., /etc/issue..., /etc/redhat-release... and /etc/rpm are already present in the Scientific Linux format and so there is a conflict and it has to terminate!!! I must have made some strange mistakes in the definitions

Fedora Installation :: How To Get Just Grub Installed

Dec 10, 2009

I tried upgrading to my linux to fedora 12 through updates and that completely screwed up my computer. Next I burned a disc with F12 and tried to a clean install but the installer stops after 823 packages. I tried an older FC9 image and that does not go through either. Now I'm stuck , I cannot get to my windows because I cannot get to GRUB . Is there a way to just install GRUB and boot into windows. I see that GRUB is around package # 600 or so in the installation and it does get upto that point.I just need it to finish instead of barfing on packages (no skip option in linux installer how clever!)
