Jan 11, 2011

Well i am out of that problem but now i want to format the xp from my linux i.e i don't want any other os in this hard disk apart from linux (ubuntu 9.10) so is it possible to format the xp from linux.

In the midst of an epic, hours-long saga of attempting to reinstall Kubuntu 11.04 and get my GRUB menu back in order to dual boot with Windows 7 (I accidentally lost the rambling thread I previously typed, so I'm not going to even tell the back story unless prompted), my installation progress bar seems to be sitting at a solid 86%, reading "Restoring previously installed packages...", something I've never seen before. It's sat there for two hours, not moving a pixel. Is there anything I can do at this point? I've been up for hours trying to do this, and I'm about ready to give up on Kubuntu and even seeing my Windows system again.

I am trying to install the Ubuntu 11.04 in my IBM t42 laptop after the HD crashed. I am trying to install it into a USB drive from another USB drive. Everything went on smoothly until it got stuck at a point where it shows the following message: Restoring previously installed packages... And the progress bar is not moving a bit for almost one and half hour.

[URL]You show how to remove a package and it's dependencies. You show how to remove the configuration from the package you are currently uninstalling. You don't show how to remove the configuration data from a package and all of it's dependencies. Why?

How do you determine the source and version of a device driver in your linux box? (The wifi driver, for instance.) In windows you can find that info using "device manager". I suppose there is some corresponding tool in linux.

I'm having a problem going from F12>F13 using preupgrade with a wired internet connection. The current F12 installation is up to date. The upgrade crashes with the "the root for the previously installed system was not found". I've also tried upgrading using YUM and was also unsuccessful. Has anyone run into this problem with this upgrade?

I have two problems. I installed a RHEL variant (scientific linux) on an already dual boot system with ubuntu and vista.
It replaced GRUB with (I think an older) GRUB version and to add to that I cannot see my ubuntu ditro anymore. is there a way of reinstalling the GRUB that came with ubuntu then adding the RHEL distro to it?
my second problem is that I cannot figure out how to enable wake on lan in scientific linux (RHEL). on ubuntu I would just write a small script and update all runlevels to run it at startup. what is the alternative on redhat?

Upon installation of Ubuntu a while back, i was using a windows xp machine with two different harddrives. Instead of formatting the xp drive and installing Linux, i decided to install Linux on the secondary harddrive. This worked all fine and dandy until recent, when I have found my linux drive filling up near capacity. I would like to format the XP harddrive and mount it in linux to give some more disk space. The problem i have found, is that the XP drive is the drive with GRUB.

I can't use cd-rw's or dvd-rw's that was previously burned in Windows. I have a lot of them that I still have from my Windows days and want to re-use them. But my Ubuntu can't delete the rw's so that I can use them again. I tried both Brasero and K3b. Both I just get "erase failed". It happens on both my desktop pc and my laptop. Is there a way or and app that will be able to erase these rw's that I can re-use them with Ubuntu ?

I have a HP laptop that I have had Windows Vista on for about two years. I am soon going to switch it over to Ubuntu. My question is can you safely use the Ubuntu installation process to delete the Windows partition along with all the programs and files it stores on the hard drive or should you first uninstall Windows manually and then, with a essentially blank computer, install Ubuntu?

Basically I have changed the default mount names for my windows partitions in Ubuntu. They were /media/data, /media/data_,/media/system reserved, etc
They are now /media/C,D,E,F
I have rebooted etc after the changes and when I look in Gnome places or in Nautilis the OLD names still show up.
HOWEVER when I run Nautilis as the root user all the CORRECT NEW names appear.
ALSO - if I create a BRAND NEW user account and login as that all the OLD names show up?
So this is something to do with ROOT access or whatever that is not allowing the names to be updated somehow?!?!?
As I use these disks in windows (obviously) I DONT want to change their labels. and basically this SHOULDN'T be the solution everyone is suggesting!
Root can generate the new names automatically based on the mount point in FSTAB why can't other users - and HOW to do do it MANUALLY?

IE: I have to keep my camera connected to one particular port. If I disconnect it and connect anything to it, it cant be seen. It doesnt matter if I reboot. Is there a way to clear out any memory that stores the usb port assignments?

My attempts to "dist-upgrade" Lenny to Squeeze ended in disaster. My story is that it was caused by a bug in the "release notes instructions".
Anyone, who wants all the gory details, can find them by visiting
619521@bugs.debian.org.
I would now like to reformat the HD-partition that currently contains the failed "upgrade" and see if I do any better by starting from scratch; it is about 6 years since I have last undertaken such a task and my memories are hazy.
The relevant entry in the Debian (Install) Manual reads:
6.3.2.3. Manual Partitioning
A similar screen to the one shown just above will be displayed if you choose
manual partitioning except that your existing partition table will be shown and **without the mount points**.
My question is:
At what point in the "clean install" does the Debian Installer (set at "medium"?) ask for the "mount point" at which the "root directory of Squeeze" is to be installed?

i usually use my pendrive in windows vista but when today i tried to open it in ubuntu 9.10 it does not show up. i know that it is mounted because i could see it in the "USB START UP DISC CREATOR" (IN SYSTEM->ADMINISTRATION->USB START UP DISC CREATOR) [See the screen shot. ]. i think since i had never tried to open my Pen drive in ubuntu before and always open it in win vista, that's why this problem is coming up.

I am currently running ubuntu 10.10
I have a panasonic 50" and a samsung 23" both of which are 1080p displays. I have twinview setup so that the samsung is my main and the panasonic plasma is my secondary. For some reason every time I open a windows of lets say mozilla and it was maximized prior to closing before, it will "jump" (briefly display on the samsung monitor for a split second and then automatically move to the plasma) from my main display to the secondary panasonic plasma. If mozilla was minimized before closing prior and I reopen it will open to the samsung in the state it was in on the prior close (aka minimized), which is fine. Only when it was maximized prior does it "jump" to my secondary display.
How can I correct this issue? I would like to have programs open (and stay) in the display they were launched in whether it is the plasma or the samsung.

I am having problems with Natty AMD64 (Ubuntu 11.04) and LIRC/IR-Keytables.
I have a Hauppauge WinTV card (Bt87 (TV card and IR receiver/transmitter) that worked (for the first time) automatically with 10.10 and LIRC. I recently moved over to 11.04, copied my LIRC config files over (hardware.conf, lircd.conf, lircmd.conf, etc), and received the error couldn't find any node at /sys/class/rc/rc*
The modules I had previously been successful with were: lirc_dev & lirc_i2c, as is apropriate for my speific card.
I then learned that Natty incorporated a lot of RC elements in to the kernel, and tried following:[url]
Which suggested removing lirc. At this point, ir-keytable also gives the same error about no node at /sys/class/rc/rc*
I think that I am having a problem with the correct driver being loaded for my card. When I look at a dmesg, the relevant section is: (note: I'm not sure if this dmesg was from before or after I uninstalled LIRC and just tried keytables)
Code:
The 3rd last line makes it seem that the IR capabilities have been recognized further confusing me as to why no /sys/class/rc/rc* has been registered. I've attached an unedited copy of my proc/bus/pci/devices, and below is my lsmod.
Code:

I added a formatted LVM hard drive ( hdb: WDC WD800BB-55JKC0, ATA DISK drive) to my current server. I need to review its contents, save any data I need, and then reformat the drive and extend the current systems LVM to include the new drive. I am unable to mount the new drive using the following steps and need to mount the LVM new drive. As I explain below, I have learned that I am not supposed to directly mount an LVM volume. Here is the work I have done to date,.
1. MAKE SURE THE DRIVE IS FOUND:
dmesg | grep drive
hda: MAXTOR STM3160215A, ATA DISK drive
hdb: WDC WD800BB-55JKC0, ATA DISK drive

I've been trying to discover how can I recover data from a hard drive that as been previously configured with LVM, although not encrypted, but I have been having mixed results. I've been using LVM more and more lately to configure hard drives and my greatest fear is to have a motherboard fail on me and get locked out of the contents.
