General :: Dynamically Create/delete Device Nodes By Driver?
Apr 15, 2010
I'm a starter here in linux, I have written a driver code and in that, I register my character devices by passing 0 for the major number.
To set up I used to use mknod command from terminal to create node,
Is there any method to create node dynamically from driver code during initialization and delete them at cleanup time?

I am deciding to whether use OSPF or RIPv2 on my network. The key point for me is how good each of them are in dynamically adding and removing nodes. I am pretty sure that OSPF works well if a node is suddenly dropped or a new one is introduced( Please correct me if I am wrong). how good RIPv2 is at this.

I have an archive directory that needs to be cleaned up once per quarter. The top level (/data/archive/*) directory names change daily, as well as the subdirectories and the filenames (the application names everything according to date). Also, there are two top level directories, bin and incoming, that we can't touch. I want to write a shell script that loops through the 15 or 20 top level directories and deletes all files and subdirectories older than 3 days (skipping the bin and incoming folders). Can someone get me started on a script? I am kinda new to shell scripting.

I am trying to create a xen vm on CentOs 5.3 using the following config file:
name = "vm5"
maxmem = 512
memory = 512
vcpus = 1
[Code]...
I'm assuming that it can't find a driver for a cdrom - but I am not too sure of that.

I'm running 10.04 64-bit diskless on ESXi, installed as a minimal virtual machine. I want this server to access an iSCSI drive. The machine can view the iSCSI shares with iscsiadm, and can even log into the drive. When I do an iSCSI login, this appears in /var/log/messages:
Aug 17 11:08:21 ubuntutest kernel: [1123295.329972] scsi4 : iSCSI Initiator over TCP/IP
So, it appears that open-iSCSI is working correctly. But no new /dev/sd* nodes appear, and nothing new appears in /dev/disk/by-path. I'd expect to see /dev/disk/by-path/ip-XXXXXXXXX. fdisk -l shows nothing but the boot drive. My guess is that the "minimal kernel" doesn't include some necessary module or driver.

I'm putting a server together and have run into a boot up problem. (I thought about putting this in the server forum, but it might be a more generic problem that others have seen and know how to rectify.) The install seems to have gone just fine. I have the /boot partition on an internal IDE drive. The rest of that drive and another are mirrored in a Raid0 configuration (using the Linux software to do that) for data storage. The swap partition is a part of the Raid5 SCSI array that also has the / (root) partition on it.
After installation it would not finish the booting process. I suspected that GRUB didn't like all the Raid arrays and such, but it seems to be fine. I can say that because the machine will boot into rescue mode with the GUI splash screen and I have access to the whole directory tree. I have already searched on-line and following prudent advice, ran the yum update while in the chroot /mnt/sysimage mode. That only took overnight to download and most of this morning to complete. Still no dice. Used vim to delete the rhgb quiet commands in the grub.conf file so I could see where the kernel seems to be hanging.
So right after the "Creating initial device nodes" is a line about my generic PS2 wheel mouse. So I tried a USB mouse. Got more output so tried swapping out to a USB keyboard. Got a little further with more information about input devices, but still stops. Also, I tried a PCI video card just to make sure the onboard video wasn't the problem - no change. So, if someone in the Fedora community knows what loads up or is configured right after the mouse and keyboard, I might be able to figure out what's causing the computer to hang during the boot process.

how to dynamically create a list within a dictionary using Python.
Code:
dates = defaultdict(int)
array = []
...
dates[m.group(3)] = array.append(date)
dates[m.group(3)] = [array.append(date)]
dates[m.group(3)].append(date)
None of the above works and I've tried everything I can think of.

I haven't programmed in C for a while, so I am trying to remember certain aspects of syntax. I have a program that will fork and exec other programs. Those programs will be specified on the command line as follows:
./main "prog1 arg arg ..." "prog2 arg arg ..."
Here is the main snippet:
int countChar(char* s, char c)
{ int cnt = 0;
int len = strlen(s);
for(int i = 0; i < len; i++)
[code]....
The highlighted line is the problem. I get this error:
dualstarter.cpp:58: error: initializer fails to determine size of 'params'.
Right now I am thinking of creating an array with the specified size and simply copying the required string into it, but it just seems like there is an easier way.

On my Debian server I installed Samba for sharing directories in my local network. I know how to set access rights but I have a problem. I would like to allow an user (example "nobody") to create files or directories in a shared directory but to deny to modify or delete something.How can I do that?Second question, on a file, I know that we can set rights for "u", "g" and "o". But like the NTFS permissions, can we apply rights for each users?

I am learning jquery and I think for the most part I have the basics down. One of the things that I am attempting to do is to create cookies using the jquery cookie plugin. The idea is that I want to replace as much of the javascript in my code as possible with jquery to see the difficulties in doing it one way or the other.
As easy as it seems to be able to create a cookie using the plugin I have not been able to do some successfully and the only thing that I can think of is the way that I am submitting my parameters is not correct. So with that, here is is my code:

Long story short - on my laptop, touch pad is recognised as PS/2 mouse. Everything works (moving, clicking, dragging, vertical scroll). But I often accidental click the pad while typing.Synaptic driver recognises it as ALPS glide point it seems (synclient -m 1 gives me back only x,y difference for the gestures, but X,Y coordinates are always 0,0) - so then I get everything right including disabling mouse on keyboard input - but scrolling doesn't work So I came up with 2 possible ideas - which I don't know how to do/test:1. Perhaps there is a way to disable mouse input while typing without synaptics drivers?2. Create a dummy input device (mouse), and tie synaptics driver to it. Add another input device in xorg.conf to point to the real touch pad as PS/2. And make the synaptics disable "real mouse" by enabling GuestMouseOff option.

I have a Corsair R60 ssd disk which is a disk with both sata and usb connectors. But the usb thing seems to be a bit non-standard, or maybe its just my fedora linux.When I insert the disk using a usb cabel to a running Fedora 14 linux system, a device called /dev/sg3 is added but that is all. No new /dev/sd* device is created so I can't mount the disk.
If I look at
cat /proc/scsi/sg/device_strs
I get
ATA Hitachi HTS54321 FB2O
HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T50N RP05
Seagate Desktop 0130
Corsair CSSD-R60GB2
So the disk is there. (The last entry) but my linux will for some reason not see it as a usb hard disk. When I insert other usb disks they work fine. It is only this specific disk which causes problems. I have tried on 3 different computers with the same result.
A hint to the problem may be that if I add the disk to a windows system(With usb) the disk is called "A fixed disk" and not a portable disk as expected. The disk works fine with linux If i connect it with the sata cabel, but I would really like to have it working with usb too. (To mount it on computers without sata).
Added:I did try to mount /dev/sg3 but mount say that its not a block device. (File say Its a character special device).
Added output from dmesg:
[ 97.454073] usb 7-1: USB disconnect, address 2
[ 105.913055] hub 2-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 3
[ 107.048054] usb 2-3: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 5
[ 107.162900] usb 2-3: New USB device found, idVendor=1b1c, idProduct=1ab8
[code]....
I found an other guy with exactly the same problem [URL] so I think its beginning to look like a bug in the drives firmware or in the linux kernel.
Final update:Corsair have said that the disk design is broken and there does not seem to be any way to make it work.

how udev rules work to create device files. Following is what I did for that: Up on plugging in my phone (sony w800i), I am getting a device file 'devcdc-wdm0' created. I just tried to figure out the rule which is responsible for the creation of this particular file.
I searched in 'etcudev ules.d' and 'libudev ules.d' for the string 'cdc-wdm' to find that rule. But I am not getting any hits in that search. Could any one help me out in this one.
BTW: I am using Ubuntu 9

How do you determine the source and version of a device driver in your linux box? (The wifi driver, for instance.) In windows you can find that info using "device manager". I suppose there is some corresponding tool in linux.

Is it possible to add more than one graphic device driver to xorg.conf and it will load automatically? It is important to autodetect because I am using the configuraiton read only. This is because it's a custom LIVE CD.This is what I currently have, and it works!
Problem is if I put my Live CD in my brothers machine, it fails to load because it uses a Radeon driver!I can preinstall the ati packages I need, so all i need to know is how do I make it work?

For years I have used a Slax live CD on a laptop to clone internal HDDs to USB HDDs. I recently purchased a Sony VPCF136FM laptop with Intel Core i7 CPU. It apparently has USB 3.0 ports. The problem is the USB ports are dead with Slax. There is a USB devise driver available for Windows 7 from Sony but nothing for Linux operating systems. Can this driver be ported to Linux? It is an exacutable (XXX.exe). The chip for the USB Host is from Renesas Electronics (no help there, either). Where can I find a device driver to use with Slax and how would I install it?

'sudo apt-get install fatx' And then it downloads the driver, and bam, they can read the fatx file system?
