View 5 RepliesI am new to kernel development, and I have to compile a kernel with some specific features and then install it on some machines. The problem is that these machines are slow, and hence I want to compile them on a fast desktop once and then install them on the machines.I am following this guide from Ubuntu wiki.
So what I plan to do is, download the source and generate a config file on one of the slow machines, copy both to the faster machine, generate the image on the faster machine and then install it on all the slow machines. The slow machines are almost identical (same cards, processors, OS etc.) but different from the fast machine(different OS and processor). So will this work or not?
I remember it being really easy to add a printer attached to another computer using Ubuntu, but I don't remember exactly what made it so easy. All I know is that now that I have switched to Kubuntu the process has become much harder because now I have to find out some special locations, numbers etc. for it to connect to the printer. It's connected to a Windows XP machine on the other side of the house.
It says alot about 'contacting the network administrator' if I am unsure about what to put in. But I am more or less the network administrator. how to find out what numbers to put in so that my Linux machine can connect and print to the Windows machine? Or maybe someone knows a few commands to share? I go to Applications > Settings > System settings, Printer configuration, New Printer, New Network printer, and then there are a few options but I don't know which one to choose. Windows Printer via Samba, I guess? Then in the box that says smb://[enter stuff here] I need to put in info but I don't know how to find that info.
I have a duo core HP machine with two (2) physical hard drives.Drive C has the win Vista Media center version installed. The second drive has 2 partitions of 500gb each. One has all my windows data files on it and the second partition I have reserverd for the installation of Linux. How to install Linux on the second partition (SDB1) without loosing the ability to use windows when i need.In other words i want to establish a dual boot system and not disturb the existing windows installation by installing Linux and then be able to boot into a dual boot system that will let me select which OS to boot to.

When I first started with Fedora I tried a dual boot situation to see if Fedora 13 was going to meet my needs. After being totally satisfied I deleted Windows from my computer. How can I get Fedora to also occupy all the disk space Windows once occupied? I have a 15 GB USB drive to work with if needed.

View 2 Replies View RelatedIn order to get the work done I use a Macintosh Macbook Pro (4,1) with a Boot camp partition running Windows 7.This allows me to use my favorite OS (OSX) with my required work environment (Win7 & .Net) when ever I need them.To allow me smooth usage I use Parallels 5 to virtually boot my Win7 machine from within OSX but whenever I want to do some heavy lifting I reboot into Windows 7 (on boot camp) which allows me to use my laptop's entire resources for my work.
My problem is this: I am now about to begin work for a company in Tel Aviv which uses Linux desktops for development and I need to follow suit. So I've given my self a new Quest: Set up the ultimate web development platform. My goal is this-
1. Install the three operating systems one along side the other - OSX, Ubuntu & Windows 7.
2. Set each one of them up in such a way that allows me to boot into it (meaning I can have any one of these OSs running on its own when I want.
3. Use parallels to virtually boot my Win7 partition - this allows me to keep using Office 2007, which I use often.
4. optional! Use parallels to virtually boot the Ubuntu OS also.
I have managed to complete goal 1 & 2.But I simply can't get 3...In theory it isn't a problem to install windows & OSX along side each other and virtually boot the windows under OSX using parallel's bootcamp virtualizer- BUT - the moment I install Linux along side the other two it break's parallel's virtualizer and it can't boot. I think it is due to parallel's in ability to use GRUB but I'm not actually sure about that.
I am considering compromising and going for a system like this:
1. Install OSX and Ubuntu on the laptop - which means I can boot into each of them.
2. Create a virtual machine for Win7 using parallels.
But that will be a real compromise as far as I'm concerned and I hope to find a way to set up the machine as I described earlier (three OSs which can be booted independently and also loaded in VMs).Just to make sure I'm clear - I HAVE MANAGED to install three independent OSs on the same machine - but that always prevents me from booting them as VMs using parallels...
So I am trying to learn a little about Cygwin and rsync. I'd like to rsync some data from a Windows machine to a Linux machine. I've got Cygwin installed but I can't figure out how to tell Cygwin were rsync will be pulling the data from; basically, how to set the directories that I want to be rsnyc'd. I've googled and googled but I can't seem to find the answer to this exact question.

I have a file that I am trying to LFTP from my Linux server to my Mainframe and the file is uploading but the data looks slightly corrupted..First off let me tell you the following text is French and it contains accent characters.Below is how the data looks when you view the data through vi or on the Mainframe:
factureNum
Note how the accent e is turned into a uppercase accent A and a copyright symbol. When I view the PC file in hex through Notepad ++ the turns into and the result is one character turning into two characters is a hex C3 and is a hex A9.
When I LFTP the file to the mainframe the characters are transferred and I end up with a hex 66 and a hex E4.The end result I am after is that I want to transfer my linux file, who's data looks like this on the linux server: factureNumro and like this when viewed on a PC: factureNumro to my mainframe and I want it to look the same as when I transfer it to the PC. Like this: factureNum.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to share folders between my laptop and desktop. The desktop runs Ubuntu 10 ,and the laptop I'm dual-booting between pclinux OS and another OS. I can't see either machine from either machine. The desktop shows a "windows network" when I go to the network location in file manager. When I run PC Linux, I can't even see the desktop which runs Linux as well, and I've tried to configure shares in the PC Linux OS Control Center, but I obviously failed. I installed gshare on the Ubuntu machine, and PC Linux has GUI tools(whew!) to configure NFS, SMB, and Deb-whatever the other one's name is. As a new convert, I've went into properties, permissions, because it's what I'm familiar with. I just wish someone would tell me if I should maybe just go back to the other OS or not, as I've had so many problems every since trying the switch. I really like this system, but it seems as if you need to be some kind of computer programmer or something to be able to do the most basic things (install software, wireless, share files). I'm not a stupid person, and what I lack in knowledge, I compensate for in desire to learn.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed UNR on an old laptop that'll be used around the living room by both me and the kids, so I set up multiple accounts and made myself and Admin. In Users and Groups, my account IS set to require password to login, and kids' account isn't. However, the machine is not going to the login window on boot -- it just goes straight to my account. Is there a way to fix this or will UNR always boot to the account created upon installation (mine) without a login prompt?
2nd issue: I installed Google Chrome from the .deb on my account and it showed up right away in the Internet tab of the home screen, but it doesn't show up on the home screen when I switch it over to the kids' account. Do I need to reinstall from each account or is there a simple way to make it available to them?
