Jan 7, 2011I set up a Linux (suse 11.3)server, and able to share files with other users using MAC and Window machines within and outside the network.The Window machines are on a domain.Now I want to add printers to my Linux server and share it with the computers that are able to access the files (mac and window workstations).Is it necessary to add my Linux box to the domain to be able to share the printers? Because the MAC computers can see/add the printers on the Linux server but the Windows pc cannot.

Nov 1, 2010I have tried to find a simple "how to". People testify how simple sharing over Linux networks is, but I just can't make it.I have a desktop with Mint LXDB on it. My wife has a laptop with Ubuntu Lucid Lynx connected with a wireless LAN to a D-Link router.
But I can't open mine from her laptop. My aim is to connect her to a backup station connected to my computer. I have been looking into https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SettingUpNFSHowTo. It is six pages long, complicated and i can't make it work.If networking in Linux should be so simple and native, there must be a better way..I hope.

May 29, 2010I'm a complete Linux beginner who wrote his first little script.I'm writing an 'installer' for it (so I can share it with friends) and I'm wandering if there is a universal method to add it to autostart in all Linux distributions.I was thinking about cron/crontab but it's not the best choice, as writing an uninstaller which removes a specific line from crontab is out of my league. I'd rather copy a *.desktop file to autostart folders and then be able to remove them.BTW do you have to put *.desktop files in ~/.config/autostart in Ubuntu, but ~/.kde/Autostart in Kubuntu even if they are shell scripts?

Jun 26, 2010I'm trying to learn about permissions on linux webserver with apache.Some clues to the system: The server I have to play around with is Fedora based. Apache runs as apache:apache. To allow for e.g. php to write to a file the file needs to be chmod 777. 755 is not sufficiant.What I'm wondering is basically how set up permissions like they should be on e.g. a "shared web host".My main problem is that if I set a permission so that one user cannot access anothers home folder, then apache can't read from the public_html folder either.
To keep the users out I need to set chmod 700. But to let apache to read I need to have at least execute on world,so a 701 basically works, but won't let some users in.So I'm really stuck on what to do. Have been concidering adding the apache user to the frous grours
below to avoid having to add the world execute flag, but is that a bad thing? Should it be the other way around, the users in the groups below should also be in the apache group?I was aiming at having 4 groups:
1. webapp: same as dev_int, but is the only one that can go inside the webapp/live folder to e.g. do an update from the repo.
2. dev_int: can read,write and execute everything in the "web root", including the two below, but nothing outside of the web root
3. dev_ext: can read write and execute in all client folders, but cannot access anything outside of the webapp root
4. clientsBasic ftp accounts. Has a home folder with a public_html, but cannot access any other home folders

Apr 16, 2010I have learnt that the network locked huawei modems may be unlocked to use any sim card bu getting a special unlock code and it should ask for it when a "foreign" SIM card is inserted. This procedure works well in Windows, but in Linux where I use wvdial, I dont get prompted for this unlock code. Does anyone know how to insert the unlock code in Linux using any Linux tool (GAMMU/GNOKII/Minicom etc)?

Apr 4, 2011I am working on a friend's computer for which he "lost" the operating system. This friend has very little extra money right now, so my classmate suggested I try loading Linux on my friend's PC.I am wondering if it will work. The PC is a Compaq Presario SR5610F with an AMD processor. I have been told that Linux doesn't care much for AMD.Does anybody know if it will be possible to use Linux as an OS on this PC?I'm looking for a cheap(er) alternative than Windows. Friend is balking at Windows 7. The machine had Vista loaded in it when purchased, then the son loaded XP on it, without removing Vista. They have been having issues with crashing for some time now. The recovery disks are supposed to have XP on them, but I don't think that is so, and when I tried running those disks, the computer balked. I finally worked around and got XP to install, using a disk from an old computer, but the code would not work, and nobody could remember the computer's password and user name.I want to start fresh with this machine, and install a basic, working OS. Am leary about XP on eBay or some such, but they really don't have the funds to purchase anything over $100.00.

The scanner is supported out of the box.I've looked at gscan2pdf and XSane:
XSane looks powerful, but not really suitable as a workflow solution;gscan2pdf is a bit closer to the "push the button, get the PDF" ideal, but still not 100% there.

Oct 31, 2010I've tried ubuntu, and could never get my sound working with that, so I tried fedora and had the exact same problem there. After a few days of trying to figure it out I decided to give up because it was really getting ridiculous, and I just want to go back to windows where things simply work.
Now the problem is that when I boot from the windows XP install disc, it doesnt recognise anything on my harddrive and just gives me the blue screen when I press any key (after showing me the list of partitions on my harddrive, all of which are <UNKNOWN>). I'm not sure what the problem is but it must be something to do with the fact that I have linux installed, so is there any way I can completely remove Fedora and just start fresh with XP?The only 2 options that the XP install disc gives me are 1) Install windows XP (I get blue screen), or 2) Recover windows XP installation (I dont have xp installed anyway).
Likewise, booting from my Fedora install disc only gives me the options of installing or rescuing Fedora, but not the option of removing it.

Feb 10, 2011I'd like to get the information about automatization of the tasks in Linux, more specifically in Fedora with minimal installation (without graphical interface and so on).The application (developed in C) needs to be started automatically when the computer is initialized. I've read about cron but I guess it's not a solution in this case because whenever computer starts the application must run once.I also have read about the/etc/ rc.local file but I made some tests changing it and they didn't work, the computer starts asking me the login and password but nothing run after that.The inittab was the same. In this way, someone know how to initialize an application developed in C when the computer starts?
